Bruno Fernandes forced to deny asking to be subbed vs Liverpool as Man Utd star reveals what he was signalling to staff

BRUNO FERNANDES has denied claims that he asked to be substituted towards the end of Manchester United’s 7-0 trouncing at Anfield. The captain was seen gesticulating at the United bench as Anthony Elanga was brought on for Marcus Rashford with five minutes of the game remaining.

This prompted former Manchester United skipper Gary Neville to claim he was asking to come off.
Neville said: “Bruno Fernnades is stood in the centre circle with his arms raised saying ‘why is it me not coming off?’
“Honestly, I have to say some of his behaviour in the second half has been a disgrace.”
Neville added: “I’ve had enough of him throwing his arms about, not running about.

    “That wasn’t a captain’s performance by him.”
But Fernandes has since made it clear to club staff that he was asking for clarification as to whether he should play centrally or wide now Elanga was on.
Fernandes has also escaped any further action for pushing the assistant referee as he tried to retrieve the ball for a goalkick.
He was initially stopped from doing so by the official as Fernandes tried to grab the ball off Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The player then pushed him as he went to get the ball.
But because the referee Andrew Madley saw the incident and decided to take no action no retrospective punishment has been given.
Analysing the incident on Sky Sports News Dermot Gallagher said it was right that Fernandes escaped any action against him.
Gallagher said: “I actually have mixed feelings about it. You don’t want a player to be manhandling an official, but I think the linesman manhandles Fernandes more than the other way round.
“I think once the official does it first, Fernandes is almost fly-swatting, ‘get out of my way I want to get on with it’.” More

‘I feel sorry for him…’ – Man Utd legend Paul Scholes DEFENDS Bruno Fernandes after embarrassing shift in Liverpool riot

PAUL SCHOLES has DEFENDED Bruno Fernandes in the wake of Manchester United’s disastrous defeat at Liverpool. That’s after the midfielder was singled out for embarrassing shift in the 7-0 loss at Anfield.

United were blown away by Jurgen Klopp’s men on Sunday as they shipped a record seven goals without reply.
But stand-in skipper Fernandes received the most flak after a ludicrous display on Merseyside.
The Portuguese playmaker was first branded a “clown” for an embarrassing dive.
And Fernandes then got into a bizarre scuffle with the assistant referee, appearing to push him after a disagreement.

The final straw for fans and pundits, including Gary Neville, was Fernandes’ “disgraceful” plea to be subbed OFF, throwing a wobbly when he was ignored by boss Erik ten Hag.
However, former United star Scholes believes Fernandes is being unfairly singled out for a shocking team performance.
He reckons the No10 struggled after being made to play in a wide position instead of his usual central role.
And Scholes also believes United should not be starting striker Wout Weghorst in every game, with the Burnley loanee deemed “too defensive.”

Scholes said: “I actually feel sorry for Fernandes when he’s played.
“He’s been pushed out to many positions to do a job for the team, he was on the left today, he’s been on the right, he’s played through the middle, he has been a little bit all over the place.
“You can’t say any of the players performed the way they should have done but I thought he was especially poor today, it wasn’t his greatest afternoon.
“But I think there are a couple of players in that team that when it comes to big games like this, I don’t think they’re quite at the level.
“[With Weghorst] you’re talking about a United No10 or centre-forward, he’s in the team to be defensive. He’s the one that runs about and everybody likes playing with him.
“But quality-wise as well you’ve got to have a certain level of quality to play for United… it’s not there.
“I don’t want to be too disrespectful to the team because they’ve been great, they’ve just won a trophy.
“That is a really freakish day. I think they’ve got the experience, the character, the quality in the team to recover from that.” More

Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel bizarrely slams Erik ten Hag for not making changes at half-time of Liverpool mauling

Ten Hag has become renowned for his early tweaks this season, as evidenced by his brilliant recent half-time change against Barcelona – when he switched Wout Weghorst for match-winner Antony.
He opted to keep things the same yesterday, however, with disastrous conquences.
In the aftermath of the 7-0 defeat at Anfield, Schmeichel explained his main gripe with Ten Hag.
He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I was quite alright at half-time because we have been behind before, we’ve had a team talk and Ten Hag has made a few changes and then the second halves have been different.

“I was expecting changes at half-time, I was expecting two changes and he didn’t do them, which was disappointing.
“The same team came out but for me it was evident it wasn’t working with Weghorst, it wasn’t working with Antony.
“I think if you play with Antony, you have to play [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka behind him because he doesn’t take part in defending.
“[Diogo] Dalot is in for a fair but of criticism today, which I think is unfair.”

Bruno Fernandes has been heavily criticised for his dreadful display, after he even appeared to ask to be subbed at 6-0.
But Schmeichel, 59, is more sympathetic to the stand-in skipper.
He added: “He has looked a little bit frustrated.
“I did the commentary for 5 Live for the Barcelona game and I was a little bit critical of him for giving the penalty away but also all the energy he spent talking to the referee about things that had already happen, they were well past it.
“I don’t think he has played in what he considers to be his best role and that was the change I was looking for yesterday. I was looking for Bruno to be moved into that kind of No10 position.
“He may feel he’s not getting everything out of his talent playing that position [out wide].
“Also the fact he doesn’t have a position. Where is Bruno playing? What is his position in that team? As long as [Christian] Eriksen is not there, he should be playing a central position.”
SunSport revealed that Erik ten Hag was furious with his team after the game.

Reason why Man Utd ace Bruno Fernandes AVOIDS FA punishment after shoving assistant ref despite call for ELEVEN GAME ban

BRUNO FERNANDES will NOT be banned for pushing a linesman. The Portuguese ace laid his hand on the assistant referee during Manchester United’s 7-0 defeat to Liverpool yesterday.
Bruno Fernandes nudged the assistant referee out the way
Pundits including Chris Sutton suggested that Fernandes should receive a retrospective punishment for his actions.
But the 28-year-old won’t be banned, as the incident WAS seen by referee Andy Madley.
Despite he and his assistants witnessing Fernandes’ nudge, they didn’t deem it serious enough to include in their report.
This means the incident will be left there, with the stand-in Man United skipper getting away with it.

Writing in the Mail, former England striker Sutton was scathing of Fernandes – and even suggested he should be hit with an ELEVEN GAME ban.
He wrote: “The Incredible Sulk racked up quite the rap sheet at Anfield. There was nothing professional about this behaviour. It was more befitting a petulant child, and the push on the assistant should result in a ban, no ifs and buts.
“Paolo Di Canio got 11 games in 1998, remember, and I wouldn’t disagree if Fernandes received the same punishment. This was shameful, embarrassing, disgraceful, whatever word you can conjure up.”
Fernandes also drew ire for seemingly demanding to be substituted at 6-0.
