His October 1996 long-range dink past Peter Schmeichel in a 5-0 home victory over United remains many Toon fans’ most cherished memory of the Entertainers era.
He joined Newcastle on the back of an outstanding performance for Belgium at the 1994 World Cup, where he scored crucial goals against Germany and the Netherlands.
But after hanging up his boots in 2000, Philippe gave it all up for a completely new career as a greengrocer back home in Belgium.
He told the Guardian: “I would prepare the produce for customers.

“Otherwise when you stop football, you do nothing. You have no life.”
Philippe worked as a greengrocer until 2012, when he became a full-time pundit for Belgian TV.
He told FourFourTwo: “For 11 years, before moving into television, I wanted to experience the real world.
“I enjoyed life, going about my business each day just like everybody else.
“And I love eating spinach, to stay strong, and apples.”
It comes after former striker for Newcastle’s most hated rivals told how he gave up football to run a B&B in York.
Sunderland legend Marco Gabbiadini, 55, embarked on the unlikely second chapter after giving up football at the age of 35.
Former England midfielder Lee Bowyer also revealed that he now spends his days fishing carp on a secluded lake.

I’m an ex-Tottenham ace.. I don’t understand why Spurs bother qualifying for the Champions League if they play like that

FORMER Tottenham striker Peter Crouch has slammed the club following their Champions League knockout. The North London side were held to a goalless draw by AC Milan at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium which saw them crash out.

And the flat nature of the performance has seen fans and pundits alike rip into manager Antonio Conte and his flops.
And former Spurs ace Crouch didn’t hold back, questioning whether there is even a point in them even qualifying.
He told BT Sport: “What’s the point of the top four if you’re going to perform like this in the Champions League? The fans want to see a trophy.
“So to rest players for that FA Cup game, it was for the league and then they lose the league game.”

Club talisman Harry Kane almost managed to rescue Spurs with a late header, but saw his effort saved by Milan goalie Mike Maignan.
Interest in the England skipper is high, with SunSport revealing Manchester United have made contact with him.
There is also a belief that should Spurs fail to qualify for the Champions League next season then Kane will push for a move away.
And Crouch admits he couldn’t blame him.

He added: “How many transitional periods is Harry Kane going to have to wait for?
“It’s a short career, I don’t think anyone could begrudge Harry Kane if he wasn’t to move. AC Milan were comfortable tonight.”
It comes just one week after the club were knocked out of the FA Cup by Sheffield United, before seeing their top four hopes take a dent with a 1-0 loss to Wolves.
Boss Conte seems to have given up as well, suggesting the club may sack him.

Antonio Conte fears Tottenham ‘might sack me even before the end of the season’ after woeful Champions League exit

ANTONIO CONTE admitted he may be sacked before the end of the season after Tottenham were dumped out of the Champions League. The Italian’s listless Spurs side exited Europe on Wednesday evening following a goalless draw with AC Milan in North London – losing the tie 1-0 on aggregate.

And Conte, 53, who is out of contract in the summer, spoke about his future in uncertain terms after a third defeat in a row.
Speaking to Italian TV, he said: “My contract expires in June.
“We will see — they might sack me even before the end of the season, who knows, maybe they are disappointed.”
The loss to Milan comes following 1-0 defeats to Sheffield United and Wolves in the FA Cup and Premier League.

And Conte, whose side were reduced to 10 men late on after Cristian Romero received a second yellow card, is concerned by the failure to penetrate opponents in the final third.
“That is the third game in a row that we were not able to score,” he added.
“The game was in the balance. I think we can do much better offensively. I speak about the whole team, not only those who play in the front half. We can do much better.
“I can’t say anything negative about the commitment of the players. They gave everything from the start to the end. We finished the game with 10 men. But if I have to see a positive situation, it is that we had a step forward.

“We played in the Europa Conference League last year and weren’t able to get out of the group stages. Now we took a step forward but it is not enough and if we want to be competitive, we have to fight.”
Tottenham sit fourth in the Premier League table but could be overhauled by Liverpool, Newcastle and Brighton if they win their games in hand.
But more than their league position, it is the style of football that is frustrating most Spurs supporters.
And Conte was forced to apologise to the fans after the Milan disappointment.
He said: “I’m really sorry for the fans but we cannot invent the win.
“It’s important to know this and not hope for a miracle that one day a trophy comes to us. We have to build and have patience.” More

And that was met by a chorus of boos from supporters as they were dumped out of the Champions League 1-0 on aggregate in the last-16.
That has condemned the North London club to a 15th-straight year without silverware as pressure mounts on boss Antonio Conte.
The Italian has refused to sign a new deal with fans also growing fed up with his uninspiring and negative tactics.
Spurs are currently fourth in the Premier League.

That’s a position that Conte did well to guide them to last season, but with this result coming just seven days after a shock FA Cup defeat at Sheffield United, unrest is mounting.
Supporters also regularly protest for chairman Daniel Levy to leave the club and the future of the club’s record goalscorer Harry Kane also remains unclear.
Back in 2017, ex-England international Rose spoke exclusively to Sun Sport and urged Tottenham to sign world-class players while he was still playing for them.

Man Utd could be taken OFF the market in shock takeover U-turn with Glazers considering scheme to cash in on fanbase

MANCHESTER United could be taken OFF the sales market in a massive U-turn.And instead the Glazer family is considering a scheme to make money from the club’s global fanbase and not the football pitch.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe made an offer to buy a majority stake of the clubCredit: PA
Sheikh Jassim however wants to buy the full club
Despite agreeing to meetings with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani over a potential sale, it appears that ALL possible moves are on the table including scrapping the entire process.
So far there is little sign that any bidders are coming close to the Glazers’ £6bn valuation of the club.
Suggestions of a rift between the Glazer brothers or a possible buy-out by co-chairmen Joel and Avram are being strongly denied.
One senior source said “The family will act as one. It will either be a full sale or an alternative”.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
The US-based Raine Group, appointed by the Glazers to handle the sale process set in train in November, is understood to still be looking at a range of options and no final decision has been made.
Those include the full sale that is the intention of Sheikh Jassim, a banker and member of the Qatari royal family.
It would also allow for the proposed Ineos buy-out of the Glazers’ 69 per cent holding but not the rest of the club share stock.
But another option being given serious consideration would be using external cash – four US hedge funds are in the market to have a possible role – to create a new company to push the club’s merchandising and digital commercial operation.

BETTING SPECIAL – BEST FOOTBALL BETTING SITES IN THE UK
The unusual set-up would see the Glazers join forces with one deep-pocketed financier – the Los Angeles-based Ares Management fund has assets of £246bn – to create the new entity.
This would allow them to rake in money from potential opportunities from digital sales, video gaming, merchandise licensing that would be separate to what happens to the pitch.
Such a move would be a significant watering down of the family’s ambitions to oversee a full sale.
But it comes with the clock already ticking on a potential sale.

Both the declared bidders believe any deal must be completed by May 31 to allow for a proper and targeted approach to the summer transfer window.
SunSport revealed how Raine intends to only open the club’s books and “data room” of financial information to each bidder in rotation, rather than simultaneously.
It is felt that the complex nature of any deal will need specialist teams to undertake tax, legal and property due diligence, existing contacts and player information before the bidders can come to a more fixed valuation.
The latest development could be seen as a tactic to focus the minds of bidders with the Glazers unwilling to budge from their high valuation – the club’s New York Stock Exchange listing values it at a fraction over £3bn. More

West Ham’s famed academy has fallen from producing Premier League legends to just one England star in 20 years

FIFTY years ago, West Ham’s famed ‘Academy of Football’ took its big leap.In 1973, at the age of just 22, Tony Carr was appointed director of youth development having been forced to end his playing days with the Hammers because of injury.

It used to be the final word in developing world-class prodigiesCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
It was an inspired decision, one that led to the unearthing of a string of future England internationals  — even though they already had a reputation for producing top talent like Bobby Moore.
The names roll off the tongue . . . Tony Cottee, Paul Ince, Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Jermain Defoe, Glen Johnson.
Carr, who remained in his role for 43 years, told SunSport: “When I was working, I never looked backwards. I always looked forwards to the next player, to the next group, to the next team to work with.
“But when I do look back now, I am immensely proud to have been a part of it.”

West Ham’s Golden Generations are still spoken about now — but  the major concern is where and when the next lot will come along.
Since Johnson made his senior debut aged 18 in January 2003 under the late Glenn Roeder, the only other graduate to represent the Three Lions has been Declan Rice.
There has been the odd success story but none matching the likes of Ferdinand, Cole and Lampard — a group Carr believes were on a par with Manchester United’s Class of 92.
To make matters worse, West Ham have recently been losing their most talented young grads to rival clubs offering better opportunities and bigger financial packages.

In 2020, full-back Jeremy Ngakia refused a new contract and left for Watford despite having just established himself in the first team, while Grady Diangana, to the dismay of ex-skipper Mark Noble, was sold to West Brom for £18million.
Last year, Sonny Perkins, a prolific goalscorer for England’s youth teams, turned down a contract to join Leeds — sparking tension between the club and his representatives.
And in January, Scotland Under-21 international Harrison Ashby, 21, left for Newcastle in a £3m deal that once again had fans questioning the club’s ability to develop their own talent.
Not for the first time, the  ‘Academy of Football’ tagline is being questioned.
But Carr said: “If a player does not want to sign a contract, there is only so much you can do.
“There is an impatience with young players and their agents now. If they aren’t in the first team by 18 or 19 they want to move.
“But they don’t realise how tough it is. It is not a bed of roses moving on.
“It is always frustrating. I don’t like to use this phrase but in some instances it is a good opportunity to cash in. That is good business.
“But the philosophy of the academy is to produce  players for the first team. No one lets these sorts of players go lightly.
“I wouldn’t blame anybody at West Ham for young players wanting to go. I would be disappointed and sad but sometimes you just have to hold your hands up.
Rio Ferdinand went on to become a Man Utd legendCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
Joe Cole won several Premier League titlesCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
“Money rules unfortunately and it starts to filter down into youth programmes.
“What players think they’re worth and what they are offered is sometimes miles apart, even if they haven’t played in the senior team.”
One of Carr’s first success stories was Cottee, who signed aged 15 in 1981, the year West Ham won the second of their three FA Youth Cups — in between 1963 and 1999.
West Ham’s current Under-18s are in the FA Youth Cup semi- finals for the first time in 24 years, back when Cole and Carrick inspired a 9-0 aggregate win over Coventry in the 1999 final.
Since January 2020, boss David Moyes has handed out 15 senior debuts from within the system and could give more a chance in tonight’s Europa Conference League  last-16 first-leg clash at AEK Larnaca.
Cottee remains hopeful for the future. He said: “Football goes in cycles, whether it is winning  trophies or producing players.
“We would all love a 60s team consisting of all local graduates. But you don’t get a chance or the time to bed those young players in.
“I don’t agree that they won’t develop another Declan Rice but it is very, very rare that you bring through a big batch of talented young players who all go on to play for England.”
Boyhood West Ham fan Cottee was inspired by the 1966 heroes Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters before breaking into the first team.
Soon, the current development crop will likely lose an idol in Rice, with his departure edging closer.

So will young players still grow up wanting to play for West Ham?
Carr said: “They should do. No one is more passionate about having young, homegrown players in the team than West Ham fans. They sing it from the stands every week.” More

Manuel Pellegrini cannot stop smirking in press conference as he looks ahead to Real Betis clash vs Man Utd

FORMER Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini couldn’t stop smiling – as the Real Betis boss looked ahead to facing Manchester United by looking back to their humiliation at Liverpool.Pellegrini was “not sad” at United’s fate and will be even happier if his Spanish team pull off a shock in the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

He only saw the first half of Sunday’s match at Anfield on TV before Betis played out a 0-0 draw with Real Madrid.
Liverpool were only 1-0 up at that point but ran out shock 7-0 winners.
Pellegrini said: “It really was unbelievable.
“I only watched the first 45 minutes because after that we had to play Real Madrid and didn’t see the other six goal.

“I understood immediately what would happen to Manchester United because of their rivalry with Liverpool. Because of the amount of goals, I knew it would not be easy for them.
“But also as a Manchester City fan, I was not very sad about what happened.”
Pellegrini knows what it is like to inflict such pain on United. He beat David Moyes’ side 4-1 at The Etihad and 3-0 at Old Trafford during  his first season in 2013-14.
That was also the season he took the Premier League title back across town as United struggled in their first campaign after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, which saw Moyes sacked before it ended.

Pellegrini also won the League Cup with City in 2013-14 and 2015-16.

But the Chilean, 69, does not believe Sunday’s result will have a bearing on tonight’s clash.
In-form Betis are currently fifth in the LaLiga table having won three straight games before that draw with Real last weekend.
Pellegrini said: “I do not think they will start the game thinking they have a 7-0 defeat inside them.
“We must be the best Betis we can be and get a good result here.

How West Ham could line up with Mourinho as manager
Mourinho is believed to be happy at his current side Roma but, according to reports, could soon receive an offer from the Hammers.
Mourinho has another season remaining on his contract at the Stadio Olimpico and it would be a shock if he left.
But should he be convinced for another spell in England he could attract some of his Roma stars to follow suit.
One player that the 60-year-old has been full of praise for since his time in Italy is Chris Smalling.

He believed that the defender should have gone to the World Cup saying that he “would do anything to have someone like him at my disposal”.
The 33-year-old would not break the bank and could be a decent option to replace the injury-prone Kurt Zouma and aging Angelo Ogbonna.
The next option would be a short-term fix to replace Declan Rice, should he be sold in the summer.
As Mourinho loves to have some big men in his team, a reunion with Nemanja Matic would not be that big of a shock.

The prospect of the Serbian lining-up with Tomas Soucek would be right up Mourinho’s street.
But if Rice is sold then there would be plenty of money to strengthen West Ham’s squad.
The club has struggled for goals this season, scoring only 23 in 25 Premier League games as Michail Antonio and Gianluca Scamacca have failed to be regular goalscorers.
Antonio has even been linked with an interest in the MLS so the club could need another striker to compete with Scamacca and Danny Ings.
Mourinho could look to bring Tammy Abraham back to London to bolster the frontline.
The former Chelsea striker excelled in his first season in Rome, but has slowed in his second campaign.
If West Ham were to offer enough they could tempt Roma into a sale and give Abraham another crack at the Premier League.
The final signing would be an exciting one for Hammers fans.
Paulo Dybala is believed to have a £10.7million release clause in his contract.

The London club would easily be able to afford that and the Argentine could add some extra quality in the frontline alongside Abraham and Jarrod Bowen.
Since joining Roma last summer he has scored 12 goals and assisted six more in 25 appearances in all competitions, so if he could do that at the London Stadium he would quickly become a fan favourite.
