Fans say Sky Sports are ‘standing by Gary Lineker’ after embarrassing gaffe during Fulham vs Arsenal clash

SKY SPORTS’ commentary cut out for Arsenal’s opening goal at Fulham – prompting plenty of Gary Lineker jokes. The team of Bill Leslie and Alan Smith on the gantry at Craven Cottage lost their feed just after the 20-minute mark.

The commentary at Craven Cottage cut out seconds before the goalCredit: Sky Sports

That forced David Jones to step in as an emergency commentator from the studio, joking Jamie Redknapp and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had to put their sandwiches down.
And the first thing Jones had to do was call Gabriel’s header to break the deadlock, turning in Leandro Trossard’s inswinging corner.
It meant the goal was greeted with an anti-climatic “oh and now Arsenal are in front” as an apology message flashed up on the screen.
The 21st-minute header came just moments after Antonee Robinson’s own goal was chalked off by VAR because Gabriel Martinelli was offside in the build-up.
Jones added: “Well, it didn’t take long, did it? They had the scare, Fulham.
“Gabriel has won the header from the corner to score his third Premier League goal of the season and the Arsenal fans in front of us celebrate again.”
At half-time, Jones joked the “stand-in commentator couldn’t see much from 120 yards away”.
Unsurprisingly, it did not take long for viewers at home to joke the Sky commentators were joining the boycott to stand with the Lineker following his BBC suspension.

One said: “Even the Sky commentators have gone on strike in solidarity with Gary Lineker.”
Another wrote: “Sky Sports just doing their silent tribute to Gary Lineker in the Fulham v Arsenal game.”
A third added: “Sky Sports surely mocking the BBC by cutting out the commentary as Gabriel scores for Arsenal.”
And a final user commented: “Respect to the Sky Sports commentators for showing solidarity with Gary Lineker, pure class.”
Five minutes later, it was 2-0 when Trossard crossed for Martinelli to head in and put the Gunners in total control.
And skipper Martin Odegaard made it three before the break when he was allowed to control, set himself and blast past Bernd Leno.
    BUNGLING BBC
The BBC chaos continued following the “farcical” Match of the Day and scrapping of Football Focus, Final Score and 5 Live Sport on Sunday during the WSL coverage.
The top-of-the-table clash between Chelsea and Manchester United had to use the world feed commentary from Nigel Adderley, with no BBC pundits, presenters or commentators prepared to cover the game.
However, just 19 SECONDS into the match at Kingsmeadow, the sound cut out – leaving TV viewers only able to hear the stadium noise – just like on Match of the Day last night.
It was just a brief technical blip though, and Adderley’s dulcet tones returned 22 seconds later.
Lineker was slapped with the punishment for his tweets relating to the Government’s Illegal Migration Bill before the likes of Ian Wright and Alan Shearer chose to stand with their pal.
That led to a reduced-length, 20-minute MOTD that was watched by 2.58million people last night – up 500,000 on the previous week – no doubt because curious fans were simply intrigued by how the show would look.
Later tonight, Match of the Day 2 – usually presented by Mark Chapman who refused to present 5 Live Sport – will have no host or pundits in a similar reduced format.
As revealed by The Sun, BBC boss Tim Davie is in a personal stalemate with Lineker as neither man prepares to back down in the impartiality row.
BBC bosses have demanded Lineker agree to stop posting political messages online after he criticised the Government’s small boats policies.

But a source close to the £1.35m-a-year England legend insisted he would carry on, despite the reaction to his comparison between Tory immigration rhetoric and Nazi Germany.
BBC director-general Tim Davie admitted it had been a “difficult day” — but said of quitting: “My job is to serve licence fee-payers and I look forward to resolving this situation.” More

Alan Shearer and Ian Wright return to TV for Premier League football after boycotting MOTD to support Gary Lineker

He has since remained tight-lipped about the incident while BBC bosses try to get him to agree to stop posting political messages online.
Lineker’s likening of Tory immigration rhetoric and Nazi Germany sparked outrage in some quarters – with Home Secretary Suella Braverman claiming his comments diminished the tragedy of the Holocaust.
His tweets were said to break the BBC’s impartiality rules which state staff must “avoid taking sides on political controversies” and “take care when addressing public policy matters”.
Wright was the first of the BBC’s pundits and commentators who refused to work in support of Lineker following the backlash.

The ex-Arsenal star informed the BBC of his decision not to take part in Match of the Day on Friday.
The likes of Shearer, Micah Richards and Alex Scott followed suit, with presenters Mark Chapman and Colin Murray also refusing to fill in for Lineker.
It caused a football blackout, with several TV and radio programmes, including the Saturday edition of Match of the Day, Football Focus and Final Score, disrupted or forced off air.
But Shearer and Wright have got their Prem fix this weekend by providing analysis for Premier League TV for their coverage of three matches today, including Arsenal vs Fulham.

Shearer shared a photo of himself in the studio alongside Wright and presenter Jules Breach.
He captioned the post: “Hellllooooo @IanWright0!! @premierleague tv today with @julesbreach and Wrighty!!!”
Wright even threatened to quit MOTD for good over the BBC’s treatment of pal Lineker.
He said: “That is the distraction and let me tell you something, if the BBC do get rid of Gary Lineker I am out.
“I am gone, I am not staying there. On his own platform, he should be able to say what he wants to say.
“Gary Lineker he says stuff on everything and it’s almost like this one has missed everybody simply because he says so much but this is so right what he is saying.
“I have spoken to Gary, I am behind him.” More

A report from CalcioMercato suggests Juventus view the former Everton star as a potential Dusan Vlahovic replacement.
The Serbian striker could be on his way out of Turin in the next transfer window, with Chelsea and Arsenal previously admirers of the player.
Meanwhile, Mundo Deportivo claims that Real Madrid have an interest in the Spurs man.

Off the pitch, it has not been much better as he criticised manager Antonio Conte for dropping him to the bench and that it had been a “s*** season”.
Conte hit back at his comments saying: “First of all I watched the interview of Richarlsion. He didn’t criticise me. He said his season was s*** and he’s right.

Arsenal dominated Fulham with a decisive victory at Craven Cottage.
The Gunners thought they opened the scoring after 16 minutes when Gabriel Martinelli’s run from the left led to a shot that Bernd Leno palmed away before Antonee Robinson’s deflection pushed the ball back in his own goal.

But the North Londoners wouldn’t be denied as they got their opener just five minutes later when Leandro Trossard’s pinpoint corner delivery from the left found Gabriel Magalhaes who netted with a towering header.
Mikel Arteta’s side doubled their lead another five minutes later when Trossard’s cross from the left found an unmarked Martinelli who scored with a header of his own.
And Trossard capped off a fantastic second half with another assist from the left as he set skipper Martin Odegaard up for a fine finish in the second minute of stoppage time.

Brailsford, the guru behind British Cycling’s success in recent years, has been tasked with building a team capable of transforming United, report The Times.
And Ineos’ director of sport has already set about trying to recruit the best in sports science, analysis, recruitment and even training ground infrastructure.
Ratcliffe seemingly wants no stone left unturned and he will hope such meticulous preparation convinces the Raine Group to sell to him.
The investment banking group is in charge of overseeing the sale process and the interested parties met with Red Devils chiefs this week.

Ratcliffe reportedly remains confident of completing a takeover despite interest from a Qatari party and Elliott management.
Brailsford’s influence could be key as he has a successful track record working in sport and alongside Ratcliffe.
The two partnered up in 2019 following Ineos’ takeover of cycling Team Sky, which Brailsford has headed as general manager since its inception in 2010.
Brailsford, 59, also has experience working in football after being appointed sporting director at Ligue Un side Nice in December 2021, another club owned by Ineos.
