I got an assist for Spurs on debut vs Liverpool then never played for them again – I switched to painting and decorating

TOTTENHAM’S forgotten man Jamie Slabber has revealed how he went from assisting on his Spurs debut to working as a painter and decorator. The Enfield-born striker came through the Lilywhites’ youth set-up and finally got his chance in a blockbuster clash against Liverpool in March 2003.

Slabber replaced Gary Doherty in the 79th minute and laid on Teddy Sheringham to score late in the game.
Unfortunately, it proved to be merely a consolation as Spurs lost 3-2 at White Hart Lane.
But Slabber has fond memories of that day as he was handed a taste of Premier League football by then-manager Glenn Hoddle.
Speaking to Planet Football, he said: “I never thought I was close to getting a chance because we had Rebrov, Iversen, Les Ferdinand, Robbie Keane and Sheringham.

“I thought I was close but didn’t think I’d get the nod. But a few were injured and others suspended and luckily Hoddle threw me in for the last 10 minutes. It was decent, a boy’s dream.
“I wasn’t nervous on the team coach, but I started to get nervous when I was warming up, as you could hear the crowd and people wishing me good luck.
“But when I did get on I couldn’t hear the crowd as I was so concentrated on the game, I was in my own little bubble. We lost the game 3-2 – all the lads said I did alright but that it was time to kick on.
“The manager gave me a special mention, but I had mixed feelings as we’d lost but I’d had my debut for Spurs so I was buzzing.”

Slabber went back to the reserves after being named as an unused sub in Hoddle’s squads for their games against Bolton and Birmingham.
He was then ruled out for six to eight weeks after rolling his ankle and damaging his ligaments.
And while Hoddle promised him more opportunities in the following campaign, the Spurs head coach ended up being sacked in the summer.
After that, Slabber failed to return to the first team as he was made to play with the Under-19s, before Martin Jol eventually told him his contract would not be renewed.
He left in 2005 and ended up at non-league Aldershot, spending more than a decade playing in the lower divisions for the likes of Grays, Stevenage, Woking, Eastleigh, Sutton and Bromley.
He eventually hung up his boots in 2018, revealing he was forced to go back to work shortly after departing Tottenham.
He added: “You get to an age where you need to give up on the dream and come back to reality; you’re never going to get where you were and you need to do something to get by. I had a mortgage and a young family.
“I got released at 20 or 21, gave it a few more years in the Conference, then at 24 or 25 I knew I wasn’t getting back into league football, so I had to grow up.

Disasi’s form for Les Monegasques earned him a place in Didier Deschamps’ France World Cup squad in November.
And according to French outlet Foot Mercato, he could soon be on the move.
They claim that Disasi’s agents met with Man United chiefs a fortnight ago to discuss a potential transfer.
The 25-year-old will have two years remaining on his Monaco contract this summer, with the Ligue 1 club set to demand at least £44million for his signature.

Foot Mercato’s report adds that United are coveting a “solid and strong player” that is “dominant” in physical duels – with Disasi fitting the bill.
In a further boost to the Red Devils’ hopes, Disasi admitted that the Prem is his “favourite” league in the world.
Asked about his future by RMC after checking in for international duty, he said: “I like England, it’s a very exciting championship, we’ll say it’s my favourite championship.”
United are set to receive competition from Paris Saint-Germain for Disasi’s signature – but the man himself remained coy on his next destination.

He added: “And between Paris and the Premier League? The place where I can progress the most.”
Disasi originally hails from Gonesse, a suburb of the French capital, and came through the ranks at Ligue 2 side Paris FC.
He subsequently moved to Reims in 2016, spending four years at Stade Auguste-Delaune and helping them win the Ligue 2 title before signing for Monaco.
The 6ft 3in ace has gone on to play 119 times for Monaco, including in the Champions League.
SunSport revealed a fortnight ago that PSG are lining up a shock £50m swoop for Man United skipper Harry Maguire.
The 30-year-old has endured a tough campaign at Old Trafford, starting just five Prem games.
Maguire last week admitted that he’d like to play more, but stressed that team success is the most important thing.
He told BT Sport: “Obviously, I want to play more, I want to start more games, but I’m playing my part on and off the field.

Man Utd’s greatest EVER XI named by artificial intelligence and Ronaldo makes it in – but there are some HUGE snubs

CRISTIANO RONALDO made it into Manchester United’s greatest XI named by ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE.But the robots snubbed a few HUGE names from the all-star team.

The ChatGPT system was asked to select the best players from the club’s rich history.
And it included members of the Busby Babes, the Class of 92, 1999 Treble winners and the side that won the 2008 Champions League.
But there was NO place for anyone in the current Old Trafford squad.
Unsurprisingly, Peter Schmeichel gets the gloves from the AI machine as one of the world’s best goalkeepers, let alone just for United.

The Great Dane capped eight incredible years with the Treble, captaining the side on that famous night in Barcelona.
Gary Neville takes the right-back slot after making all 602 club career appearances for the Red Devils.
The academy star won 17 major honours with United including eight Premier Leagues.
The centre-back pairing is a familiar one with Nemanja Vidic partnering Rio Ferdinand.

Two colossal defenders, they enjoyed so much success together and formed the bedrock of the 2008 Champions League-winning side.
Completing the back four is Denis Irwin.
The Irish left-back spent 12 trophy-laded seasons at Old Trafford and his spell in the team coincided with arguably the greatest era in the club’s history.
Roy Keane takes his place in the middle of the park.

The influential captain led the team to so many successes and always demanded so much from his team-mates – but had all the attributes to run the show in midfield.
He plays alongside Paul Scholes in the XI – dubbed by many as the greatest technical player to have graced the Old Trafford turf.
Scholes’ vision and passing ability made him a delight to play alongside and he is one of the few to win the Champions League in 1999 and 2008.
The attacking quartet ChatGPT threw up is seriously impressive.

Five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo developed into one of the best players in the world during his first spell at United before returning for an emotional but ultimately unsuccessful comeback which ended with his axing in November.
On the other flank is none other than George Best, the Northern Irish sensation who lit up Old Trafford from 1963 to 1974 with his outrageous ability and huge personality.
He won the heroic 1968 European Cup, scoring the winner in extra-time, and will forever be regarded as a United legend.
Another United legend is the one and only Bobby Charlton, who captained the side and scored twice in that 4-1 win over Benfica at Wembley.
The 1966 World Cup and Ballon d’Or winner was United’s record goalscorer on 249 for more than 40 years until he was surpassed by Wayne Rooney.
Lastly on the team sheet is Eric Cantona, the maverick French forward with supreme talent and a winning mentality to match.
Joining from Leeds in 1992 took plenty of nerve and Sir Alex Ferguson knew he had to manage Cantona carefully to get the best out of him, and get the best out of him he did as the forward fired the club to four league titles.
However, the star-studded XI does not have space for a fair share of Red Devils legends.

Record-scorer Rooney, David Beckham, Bryan Robson and Ryan Giggs all miss out, as do Duncan Edwards, who many thought would have been United’s greatest ever player if it hadn’t been for the 1958 Munich Air Disaster, Denis Law, Billy Foulkes and Jaap Stam.
Of the present-day crop, David De Gea and Marcus Rashford probably have the strongest argument to be involved but have a long way to go to replicate what the AI XI achieved for the club.

Incredible stat reveals a QUARTER of current Premier League gaffers have managed Watford… can you name them all?

NO less than a QUARTER of gaffers currently managing in the Premier League have taken charge of WATFORD.But can you name them all?

The Hornets are no strangers to hiring and firing, going through 22 managers since Aidy Boothroyd’s exit in 2008.
Chris Wilder has become their THIRD boss of the current season after Rob Edwards and Slaven Bilic.
And Watford’s incredible turnover means that 25 per cent of the Premier League’s current gaffers have been in control at Vicarage Road during some point in their career.
The stunning stat was figured out by boffin fans of the Championship side, who are five points off the playoff positions.

The first manager is none other than Brendan Rodgers, now in charge at Leicester.
Watford was his first gig in the dugout after cutting his teeth at Chelsea.
Rodgers joined in November 2008 and saved the Hornets from relegation.
But he departed in June 2009 to take charge of rivals Reading.

Next in the list is Everton boss Sean Dyche, best known for his decade at Burnley.
Like Rodgers, he too got his first managerial break at Watford.
Dyche, who had been an U18s coach under Rodgers before becoming assistant to Malky Mackay after his counterpart’s Reading move, finally landed the top job in June 2011.
But despite finishing 11th —  Watford’s best finish in four years — he was shown the door a year later after Gino Pozzo’s takeover.
The next man on the list is Marco Silva, now at Fulham after also managing Everton and Hull.
He joined Watford in May 2017 but was sacked in January 2018 after an “unwarranted approach by a rival”… which turned out to be Everton.
The Toffees ended up paying £4million compensation for Silva, who is now flying high at Craven Cottage.
Fourth up is Javi Gracia, who recently landed the Leeds job.
He replaced Silva in January 2018, eventually leading Watford to top-flight safety and the FA Cup final.
But Gracia was shown the door in September 2019 after a dismal start to the campaign.
Last but not least is former England manager Roy Hodgson.
The icon is back in the Premier League with Crystal Palace, having left the Eagles in 2021.
His two Palace spells sandwiched a rather lacklustre five months spent at Watford last year.

However, the striker quickly fell down the pecking order after the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel and has since only managed 123 minutes of football without starting a single game this year.
The Gabon international was also axed from Graham Potter’s Champions League squad after the West Londoners’ January spending spree.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona like the idea of bringing the 33-year-old back to the Nou Camp as a “low cost option” amid their financial issues.
This comes after Aubameyang was pictured celebrating with his former team-mates in the dressing room after their 2-1 triumph over Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico.

The forward still has an excellent relationship with the Blaugrana stars, especially Ousmane Dembele with whom he played at Borussia Dortmund.
Barcelona manager Xavi is also keen on the ex-Arsenal star as his 13 goals in 24 appearances during the second half of last season sealed Champions League qualification.
Plus, the Spanish tactician appreciates his versatility as he can play as a winger and a centre-forward.
The Catalan giants tried to sign Aubameyang in January but LaLiga regulations blocked a potential deal.

How Arsenal and Man City’s title run-ins compare as tense Premier League race enters thrilling final straight

And while Pep Guardiola’s men now have a game in hand, they know they have significant ground to make up if they are to clinch a fifth title in six years.
The defending champions have 11 matches remaining – a run which begins at home to Liverpool on April 1.
Arsenal then return to domestic action by hosting Leeds later on the same day.
But how do both teams’ run-ins look across the final two months of the Premier League campaign?

How Arsenal and Manchester City’s Premier League run-ins compare
    Arsenal’s run-in
Mikel Arteta can take positives from his side’s Europa League exit as it means they now have one sole focus.
That begins with what should be a routine win over relegation-threatened Leeds at the Emirates.
But the following weekend things threaten to get tougher for Arsenal as they head to Anfield to take on Jurgen Klopp’s wounded Liverpool.
That is followed up by a London derby against West Ham – a pair of away games which could prove tricky to navigate.

A kind clash at home to Southampton follows, but five days later they will then travel to the Etihad for a potential title decider against Man City.
Defeat against Guardiola’s men could derail Arteta’s side three days before they host Chelsea in another blockbuster derby.
And the tricky run continues with matches away at Newcastle and at home to Brighton.
Should Arsenal come through those four games against Man City, Chelsea, Newcastle and Brighton, they would then be the overwhelming favourites to clinch the title.
That is because their final two fixtures come against Nottingham Forest and Wolves.

    Man City’s run-in
Man City’s quest to chase down Arsenal begins at home to long-time title rivals Liverpool on April 1.
If they can come through unscathed, fixtures against Southampton and Leicester follow in what is a promising couple of games to try and pick up maximum points.
But then City are handed the challenge of three successive matches against top-half opposition.
A trip to Brighton is followed up just three days later with the crunch six-pointer at home to Arsenal.
Then within 96 hours of the mouth-watering tussle with the Gunners, they are then on the road again travelling to Fulham.
If City drop below their usual level for any of those games then the title could be in Arsenal’s hands by the time they leave Craven Cottage on April 30.
However, a successful run of form could hand City the initiative heading into their final four matches.

I’m one of Premier League’s best referees and took charge of the FA Cup final – but before that I had VERY different job

A PREMIER LEAGUE referee who recently felt the wrath of Erik ten Hag once had a very different job.Andre Marriner, 52, is one of the most-experienced ref’s in the top-flight.

He has taken charge of 386 Premier League fixtures, dishing out 1,197 yellow cards and 67 reds during that period.
And he is well on the way to becoming only the third official after Martin Atkinson and Mike Dean to reach the 400-game mark.
The Birmingham-born whistler was also on the Fifa referee list from 2009 to 2017.

Raya is preparing to enter the final 12 months of his contract, meaning Brentford may look to cash in on him at the end of the season.
And the ability he continues to show with his feet is something that makes him a perfect replacement for De Gea – who has been criticised for his passing.
Now Manchester Evening News have focused in on a particular passage of play from Raya during Brentford’s draw with Leicester.
This came when Harvey Barnes pressed the Spaniard as he came rushing out of his penalty area.

Raya casually dummied the Foxes forward and looked for a pass.

Raya’s technical ability is something Man Utd legend Gary Neville has spoken about in the past.
Neville believes the Brentford man could “step up” to a Big Six club after describing the role of Man Utd keeper as “the single most difficult position in English football”.
