I’m an ex-England and Arsenal star – I can’t remember my best moments after drink ruined my life but now I’m in recovery

ARSENAL legend Kenny Sansom reveals a life-threatening drink problem robbed him of his best footballing memories – but he’s now in recovery. The former England left-back says booze “ruined my life” but he finally “feels like I’m a dad again”.

The Sun exclusively told last month how the 86-cap Londoner, 64, was “proud” to walk his daughter down the aisle.
And he explained to the The Mail how he is putting some shocking low points behind him for more family highs as he continues to get better.
The ex-Crystal Palace hero was in a coma at one stage, unable to eat or drink.
He was diagnosed with Wernicke-Korsakoff and, after he caught pneumonia too, his family were warned he would not be resuscitated if his body failed.

Before that Sansom would often sleep rough – once estimating he downed nine bottles of wine a day.
But as he rebuilds his life he said: “Sometimes I get the hump with myself, sometimes I feel happy.
“I think April will be three years without a drink – that takes some doing.
“Drink ruined my life – that’s one thing I can say for sure. And I know that now, I physically know it, I’ll never drink again.”

He added: “I can enjoy my kids and my grandkids.
“I can take them to football matches…I can take them wherever they want, when I want. It’s up to me. It’s all I want to do now.”
“I feel like I’m their dad. Whereas before? I was a drunk.”

Inside Nagelsmann’s brutal Bayern Munich sacking while he was on a skiing holiday as he emerges as Tottenham target

JULIAN NAGELSMANN has officially been sacked as Bayern Munich boss – and details behind his departure are beginning to emerge.Surprising reports last night indicated that the highly-rated German coach was on his way out, a move the club have confirmed this afternoon amid rich speculation over the motives.

Julian Nagelsmann arrived at the training ground to be sacked by club chiefs todayCredit: Reuters
This is despite the fact that Bayern sit just a point off top spot in the Bundesliga and are into the Champions League quarter-finals where they will play Man City.
But this was not enough to save the coach as he reached the end of his second season in charge.
Sky Sports Germany have reported that club bosses have a number of reasons for pulling the trigger.
They cite a lack of player development and “negative sporting development” as among the main reasons.

Bosses were also reportedly of the mind there was “too much theatre [and a] lack of results”, with some players even “complaining” about their manager.
Ex-Bayern and Liverpool defender Markus Babbel told Blickch: “I know that Nagelsmann’s relationship with a BILD reporter was a huge topic in the dressing room.
“It didn’t go down well at all that he was with her. His girlfriend was therefore a big problem for Bayern.
“There was a lack of trust because some players just weren’t able to communicate what they were thinking anymore.”

The Bayern hierarchy were believed to be taken by “surprise” at Nagelsmann, 35, going off on vacation to Austria during the international break while some of his players remained at the training ground.
The German was on a skiing holiday in Austria when he was reportedly told about the decision to fire him.
Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will replace him with Bayern also confirming that a deal was done.
Tuchel, 49, has been out of a job since being given his marching orders by the new Chelsea owners last September.
The shock managerial turnaround may have come as a surprise to Nagelsmann with Bayern able to regain control of the title race if they beat Dortmund on April 1 when club football returns.
The Bavarian club also dispatched PSG in the last-16 and made an awkward assignment look largely straight-forward over two legs.
Nagelsmann won 60 of his 84 games in charge of Bayern and secured the Bundesliga title last season along with two German Super Cups.
His departure could potentially have a big knock-on effect for one Premier League club.
The Telegraph report that Spurs are set to open talks with Nagelsmann after today’s decision.
They claim the sacked Bayern manager has an “affinity” for Spurs and even used to own one of the club’s replica shirts.

Antonio Conte is believed to be at risk of the sack during this international break and thoughts have already turned to who could replace him.
Nagelsmann was among the managers Spurs considered after they sacked Jose Mourinho two years ago.

Wayne Rooney made massive gaffe when he rang Sir Alex Ferguson for the first time reveals pal

WAYNE ROONEY made a huge gaffe when he rang Sir Alex Ferguson for the first time – despite being warned!Ex-Manchester United sports therapist Rod Thornley revealed the then-teen sensation’s call ahead of his move from Everton in 2004.
Wayne Rooney might have got it in the neck after his unfortunate first phone chat with legendary Man Utd boss Sir Alex FergusonCredit: Bradley Ormesher – The Times
Rooney went on to become a Red Devils’ legend, winning the Champions League and five Prem titles as their 253-goal record scorer.
But Thornley has now explained how the future England skipper briefly got on the wrong side of all-time great manager Fergie.
He was with Rooney on Three Lions’ duty when the saga unfolded.
Thornley told Fore Four 2: “He [Rooney] said to me ‘If I’m going to call your boss, what do I call him?’
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
“I went ‘what, do you mean Sir Alex? He’s my boss so I’d call him boss but you’d call him Sir Alex because you don’t really know him. Are you going to ring him? Are you coming to us?’
“He said ‘well, what do you think? – I’m going to ring your boss’.
“I said ‘right, well, just call him ‘Sir Alex’.
” And I’m buzzing now because my mate’s going to come and sign for us. I’m thinking ‘aww brilliant’.

“So he gets his phone out there and then whilst he’s away with England…. ‘Alright, Alex, it’s Wayne’.”
Thornley knew Fergie’s mood could become something like a dark knight if he wasn’t fully respected.
He explained: “I know Sir Alex and he doesn’t like to be called Alex, he likes to be called ‘Sir Alex’.
” I’ve seen him many a time say to someone who’s gone ‘Alex, can you sign this for someone’ and he’d go ‘did I go to school with you? It’s Sir Alex to you’.
“That’s what he was like Sir Alex.”
But of course not many players have made it up better to Fergie than Rooney.
He spent 13 heady years at Old Trafford before returning to Everton in 2017.
And he’s never recaptured the pomp of his peak United years – either on the pitch or in the dug-out.
After a brief spell with DC United Rooney was Derby player-boss for two years.

And since returning to DC as manager in July 2022 he’s had a mixed time.
Perhaps he should call Sir Alex for help. More

And their books have prompted the Premier League to refer them to an independent commission for further analysis.
    Everton deny any wrongdoing.
The Toffees have been charged with being in breach of Profitability & Sustainability rules – the same violation reigning English champions Manchester City are alleged to have committed.
If found guilty, they could face a catastrophic points deduction.

A Premier League statement read: “In accordance with Premier League Rule W.82.1, the Premier League confirms that it has today referred an alleged breach of the League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules by Everton Football Club to a Commission under Premier League Rule W.3.4.
“The assessment period for which it is alleged that the Club is in breach is the period ending Season 2021/22.
“Commissions are independent of the Premier League and member clubs.
“The members of the Commission will be appointed by the independent Chair of the Premier League Judicial Panel, in accordance with Premier League Rules W.19, W.20 and W.26.

“The proceedings before the Commission will, in accordance with Premier League Rule W.82, be confidential and heard in private.
“Under Premier League Rule W.82.2, the Commission’s final award will be published on the Premier League’s website.
“The League will be making no further comment until that time.”
Prem strugglers Everton issued a statement in which they denied any wrongdoing.
It read: “Everton Football Club is disappointed to hear of the Premier League’s decision to refer an allegation of a breach of Profit & Sustainability regulations to an independent commission for review.
“The club strongly contests the allegation of non-compliance and together with its independent team of experts is entirely confident that it remains compliant with all financial rules and regulations.
“Everton is prepared to robustly defend its position to the commission.
“The Club has, over several years, provided information to the Premier League in an open and transparent manner and has consciously chosen to act with the utmost good faith at all times.
“The club will not be making any further comment at this time.”
In a statement last year, a club spokesperson said: “We have worked closely with the Premier League to make sure we are complaint.
“We are comfortable that we have complied with the rules.
“External auditors have told us what we can and cannot claim against the pandemic.
“If clubs want to take legal action that’s their decision.”
If Everton are found guilty of the FFP charge levelled at them, a potential punishment would be a points deduction – although it’s unclear whether they’d be hit with it now or next season.
In November 2021, Derby County were deducted nine points for breaching the EFL’s Profitability and Sustainability rules over the £81m sale of Pride Park.
