Antonio Conte breaks silence after Spurs axe as he aims thinly-veiled dig at club

ANTONIO CONTE has broken his silence following his axing at Tottenham as he thanked fans – but also appeared to throw a thinly-veiled jibe in the club’s direction. The Italian left Spurs yesterday after a week of speculation that he was set to be dismissed.
Antonio Conte’s time at Spurs finally came to an end yesterdayCredit: AFP
The announcement came last night eight days after Conte’s final game in charge – a chaotic 3-3 draw with Southampton.
The 53-year-old has now released a statement on his Instagram page 24 hours later as he thanked Spurs supporters in a classy message but also seemed to fire a barb at the club.
He said: “Football is passion. I would like to deeply thank everyone at Spurs who appreciated and shared my passion and my intense way of living football as a coach.”
His intriguing comment comes after his fiery rant where he attacked “selfish” players and hit out at the club’s lack of success.

Reports in the next few days indicated that his relationship with the players had completely broken down with several wanting him sacked.
Conte added: “A special thought to the fans who always showed me support and appreciation, it’s been unforgettable to hear them singing my name.
“Our journey together has ended, I wish you all the best for the future.”
Conte was appointed head coach in November 2021 as he looked to steady the ship after Nuno Espirito Santo’s brief but troubled reign.

He managed to get the club into the top four despite their poor start but fans quickly grew uneasy about the style of football.
Concerns over the manager from sections of the fanbase only grew this season while results grew increasingly inconsistent.
Conte also had to deal with health issues which saw him miss a handful of games earlier this year.
The former Chelsea manager often voiced frustration with the club and transfers during press conferences.
His grievances reached a head following last week’s game at St Mary’s when Conte unleased his now infamous rant.
His replacement until the end of the season will be Cristian Stellini, the assistant manager who had to stand in for the boss while he underwent and recovered from gallbladder surgery.
The north London club are reported to be in no rush to find a permanent successor.
This is despite the fact that three of the biggest names linked to the hot seat – Mauricio Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann – are all currently free agents.
It is possible several big clubs could be soon looking at the trio with the sackings of Nagelsmann and Conte over the past few days potentially triggering a managerial merry-go round in Europe. More

I was at Arsenal for 11 years and never won the title but my old captain Arteta can bring it home – the fans deserve it

AARON RAMSEY has backed ex-team-mate Mikel Arteta to finally lead Arsenal to the Premier League title. The Wales captain, 32, spent 11 years with the Gunners between 2008-2019, winning the FA Cup three times including two final match-winning goals in 2014 and 2017.

Ramsey failed to bring the Prem back to the Emirates but reckons Arteta’s side, who hold an eight-point advantage over Manchester City, will land their first crown since the Invincibles of 2004.
Ramsey said: “Of course, I hope Arsenal win the title. The club is still a massive part of me. I spent 10, 11 years there and it would be absolutely great for them to go on and win the league.
“I’m as much a fan as anybody. I still know so many players and members of staff there. And the fans – they deserve it.”
Ramsey, who now plays for Nice in France, lined up alongside Arteta in the centre of midfield for five years until the now Arsenal boss retired in 2016.

The Spaniard was the club captain for two of those years but Rambo says he knew the 41-year-old would go on to be a manager.
Ramsey added: “Mikel was my captain for a few years there and you could see his leadership qualities and the way that he handled himself was second to none.
“You could see back then when I was playing with him that he was always going to be a manager one day, the way he thought and saw the game and how intense he was as well.
“What he has done is absolutely unbelievable, what they are doing at the moment and hopefully they can go all the way.”

Arteta undertook his coaching badges with the Football Association of Wales.
He was still an Arsenal player when the ex-Everton and Rangers ace turned up to start his A licence at Dragon Park in 2015.
As part of the course, the Basque-born star coached the Wales Under-16 squad which went on to win the Victory Shield.
Then, after completing the A licence, Arteta joined former Arsenal greats Thierry Henry and Freddie Ljungberg on the 2017 Pro licence.
And ex-Juventus midfielder Ramsey, who was appointed as Wales skipper for the second time after Chris Coleman took it off him and gave it to Ashley Williams in 2012 following the tragic death of Gary Speed, says he would have chats with Arteta about life in his homeland.
Ramsey, preparing for the Euro 2024 qualifier against Latvia in Cardiff on Tuesday, said: “We used to talk about the coaching courses and he would tell me how impressed he was with the Welsh setup, their methods and the way that they go about things.
“They have done a fantastic job in producing some top managers and a lot of people are coming through that programme at the moment. It has been second to none.”

Man Utd ‘already negotiating Ruben Neves transfer as Barcelona pull plug on deal to sign in-demand Wolves midfielder’

MANCHESTER UNITED are “already negotiating” a transfer for Ruben Neves as Barcelona pull out of the race for the Wolves star, according to reports. The midfielder has long been linked with the Premier League’s biggest clubs after consistently impressing at Molineux.

Neves arrived in the midlands from Porto in 2017 and is close approaching his 250th appearance for the club.
But with the 26-year-old out of contact at the end of next season, Wolves now face a dilemma of whether to cash in on the star in the summer or potentially let him go for free a year later.
Fichajes claim Man United are already making quick progress to land their long term target.
The Red Devils are reported to be in talks already for Neves with the summer transfer window fast approaching.

In a further boost for the club, the Spanish outlet claim that Barcelona are no longer interested in the Portuguese international.
Xavi is reported to think the star does not fit the Catalan giant’s “profile” despite reports often linking him with a Nou Camp switch.
The Spanish side are believed to be looking for a player to sit in front of the defence, possibly as a replacement for club legend Sergio Busquets who could leave at the end of the season.
But Neves has often played in a slightly more advance role for Wolves, which has often seen him score amazing goals on his voyages forward.

The striker has been shining bright in Ligue 1 this season during his loan stint at Reims from the Gunners as he is second in the league’s goalscoring charts.
Smith Rowe insists he would love to have the 21-year-old in the Three Lions after spending many years playing with him in North London.
However, the playmaker insists that’s his decision and he needs to look after his best interest.
Smith Rowe said: “Of course [I would prefer he choose England], but obviously it’s his decision.

“That’s down to him to do what he wants to do. It would be nice if he could be with us in the summer [for the European Under-21 Championship] but like I said, that’s down to him and he’s got to do what’s best for him.”
England boss Gareth Southgate admits he is impressed with Balogun, who has scored more goals than Paris Saint-Germain superstars Lionel Messi and Neymar this season.
However, Southgate insists the centre-forward, who has registered 17 goals in 27 league appearances, will have to be patient.
The 52-year-old tactician claims Balogun has yet to make his squad due to a lack of Premier League experience.

Southgate said: “It is up to the player to weigh up where his heart feels. Is he prepared to wait a little bit for an opportunity if he backs himself and feels he can push his way into our squad?
“Because anybody who has followed us will know that we will give young players a chance. So, we cannot go and give first-team call-ups to someone just because we don’t want them to go somewhere else.
“We like Flo. He has obviously not had an opportunity in the Premier League yet, so we have to weigh up those goals to Ivan [Toney], for example, or Ollie Watkins. Or Eddie Nketiah, who has done really well with the opportunity he has had at Arsenal.
“I know there are going to be offers as 80 per cent of our players can play for more than one country now, and we are not arrogant expecting everybody to want to come to play for England. We have to make them feel wanted and feel part of that.” More
