Six Premier League legends AXED from Hall of Fame shortlist amid controversies as new group is announced

THE PREMIER LEAGUE has AXED six nominees from this year’s Hall of Fame shortlist. It comes as a smaller group of nominees has been announced for 2023 after all six of the Prem icons were on a larger shortlist last year.

This year’s shortlist sees 15 stars nominated, down from the 25 nominees in 2022.
The names cut from the list are Matt Le Tissier, Patrice Evra, Teddy Sheringham, Edwin van der Sar, Robin van Persie and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Southampton legend Le Tissier was cut after coming under fire for his controversial views relating to the Covid-19 pandemic, vaccines and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
Le Tissier, who was axed as a pundit by Sky Sports in 2020, claimed PCR tests were “the biggest fraud ever perpetuated on mankind”.

He also said images of destruction in Ukraine were “falsified” and reposted a Tweet claiming the media had “lied” about a number of stories.
Ex-Manchester United star Evra was taken off the list after being convicted in a Paris court over his use of homophobic language online.
Following a game between United and Paris-Saint Germain in 2019, Evra posted a clip online of him saying: “Paris, you are queers, you are queers.”
Stop Homophobia and Mousse launched a complaint in March 2019, with the 41-year-old landing a fine of £890 and being ordered to pay £1780 compensation to two anti-hate campaign groups.

After the conviction in February, Evra said: “I have so much to learn.”
Premier League sources insisted that the shortlist had been reduced as a result of the lower number of inductees and entirely on footballing criteria.
In addition, the Premier League added: “ New players become eligible each season upon their retirement from football.
“A number of other factors are also taken into account by the Premier League and the League’s Awards Panel.
“They include prior voting data for players included in previous Hall of Fame shortlists, eras, player positions and achievements.

“Each player will be considered according to these factors when compiling all future shortlists.”
Ex-Man Utd and Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick has been joined by ex-Spurs and Sunderland ace Jermain Defoe in this year’s list as newcomers in this year’s list.
The Hall of Fame began in 2021 and has seen 16 players inducted into it so far.
Legendary managers Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger became the first managers inducted into the list earlier this week.
They join the 16 players already in the list, which saw David Beckham, Dennis Bergkamp, Eric Cantona, Thierry Henry, Roy Keane, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Alan Shearer in the inaugural selection in 2021.

He started playing with his pals as he had dropped out of the Toffees team and he insisted that doing so helped him get his “love” back for football.
He told the Kammy and Ben’s Proper Football Podcast: “It was a bit hard because of the sort of hair I have. But I’d wear a snood…and try to cover my hair.
“So obviously, now I’ve moved up to Liverpool/Manchester, I’d go and play with friends in Manchester when I wasn’t playing as much with Everton.
“But yeah, it definitely helped me get my love for football again.

“Just enjoying it with my mates made me realise how much I love the sport.”
“I made sure I didn’t get into 50/50s or get into anything physical just for safety.

“But yeah, I did work hard.”
However, he admitted that some opponents would figure out who he was, but were keen not to injure him.

When asked if they would try “rough him up”, Iwobi replied: “No, not at all.
“Because everyone knew who I was that I was playing with, they made sure that they didn’t really.
“They would say, like, ‘Don’t really get too tight to him. He has training, you know, he has a match coming up soon.'”
When it was suggested that he would be protected, he added: “Yeah, a bit.
“I feel like it was a thrill for me to play with them, honestly…I enjoyed their company more than they enjoyed mine, if I’m being honest.
“Because at the end of the day, we are the same people, just people that love the game.
“Of course, I do play professionally, but everyone loves football the same way. So, it made me enjoy it as much as they enjoyed it.” More

Tottenham fans all say the same thing as Chelsea star Mason Mount emerges as ambitious transfer target

TOTTENHAM fans have mocked reports of their club being interested in Chelsea star Mason Mount.Mount, 24, is no closer to agreeing a new deal to commit his long-term future to the Blues.
Mason Mount has been linked with a move away from Chelsea this summerCredit: Getty
His contract at Stamford Bridge is set to expire in 2024.
And he has been linked with a host of Europe’s top clubs including Bayern Munich, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United.
But according to The Athletic, Tottenham are the latest team to emerge as an interested party.
Spurs are understood to have been monitoring the England man since last summer.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
But Lilywhites supporters do not believe Mount – who has 36 international caps – would consider a move across the city to Chelsea’s London rivals.
Reacting on social media, one person said: “As if he’d come here 😂.”
Another replied: “Like that is ever going to happen.”
A third simply responded: “Complete non-starter.”

And a fourth pointed out: “Can get [James] Maddison for less money and wages.”
Mount, a product of Chelsea’s academy system, has contributed 33 goals and 37 assists in 192 games for the club.
But just nine goal contributions in 32 matches this season have called into question his importance to the Blues moving forward.
Bayern are emerging as an option for the Englishman, particularly after hiring Thomas Tuchel as their head coach – a manager Mount thrived under and won the Champions League with in West London.
And it could work out for the German champions as Chelsea may well prefer to sell him to a foreign club rather than an English rival.
But a Premier League move is also a possibility, with Liverpool thought to be leading the race among the domestic clubs.
Jurgen Klopp is keen to re-energise his midfield in the summer as Jordan Henderson and Thiago move deeper into their 30s. More

How Man City could line up under Luis Enrique if he replaces Pep Guardiola with raid on Barcelona midfield duo

MANCHESTER CITY could raid Barcelona for their midfield stars… if Luis Enrique replaces Pep Guardiola at the Etihad.Reports claim there is some “fear” behind the scenes at City that Guardiola could walk this summer – despite signing a contract extension until 2025 just last year.

And Enrique has reportedly been earmarked as the man to replace Guardiola if he does end up leaving.
The 52-year-old was sacked as Spain boss after the World Cup but has revealed his desire to work in the Premier League, and has been linked with the vacant Tottenham job.
During his time with Spain, Enrique gave Barcelona duo Pedri and Gavi their first caps for the national team.
Joining City could see Enrique try and prise the duo away from cash strapped Barca.

Enrique also spent three years in charge at the Nou Camp, and while Pedri and Gavi were in the academy at the time, the Barcelona link is there.
Midfielder Gavi, 18, has been stripped of his contract and squad number as the club are unable to register him as a first-team player.
That has sparked rumours regarding his future at the Nou Camp.
But getting hold of Pedri, 20, could prove to be more difficult.

The Barcelona academy product signed a new deal in 2021 with a ONE BILLION euro (£882million) release clause.
Enrique also has experience working with Aymeric Laporte and could choose to keep him on, despite the defender reportedly wanting to leave for Barcelona.
Alternatively, City are also one of the favourites to land England starlet Jude Bellingham.
The 19-year-old could leave Borussia Dortmund this summer and would walk into any midfield in world football, including City’s.

MANCHESTER UNITED legend Paul Parker has advised the club to replace Jadon Sancho with Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma.Mitoma, 25, has been a standout player this season while Sancho has just registered 10 goals and four assists since making his £73million move from Dortmund in 2021.
Meanwhile, talisman Marcus Rashford has rubbished claims that he is seeking £500,000-per-week to sign a new contract at Old Trafford.
And Man United goalkeeper David de Gea has rejected a new contract at Old Trafford, according to reports.

    More from Rooney
Wayne Rooney praised Manchester United for moving on quickly after offloading Cristiano Ronaldo.
Rooney added: “I suppose he got what he wanted.
“For Manchester United, it was important to move on as quick as possible from that and really refocus on the group of players who were there and wanted to be there.
“And I think that’s where [Erik] ten Hag has done a really good job in refocusing the players and getting them in a position where they are, obviously, comfortably in the top four, and also winning the [Carabao] Cup.”
    Rooney moving Ron
Manchester United record goalscorer Wayne Rooney has said “it’s a shame how it ended” for Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford.
DC United boss Rooney told CNN about Al-Nassr superstar Ronaldo: “I think what he’s done for Manchester United is great. He’s won Premier League titles, won the Champions League, scored many goals.
“So I think certainly for the fans and certainly for the players, his former team-mates who played with him from my time especially, we’ll never forget what he did for Manchester United.
“In my eyes, he’ll always be a club legend and it’s a shame the way it ended of course this time round. But I don’t think that takes anything away from his legacy at the club.”
    Man Utd transfer advice
Manchester United have been urged to freshen up their attack by replacing Jadon Sancho with Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma.
Former United star Paul Parker told MyBettingSites: “I would love to see him at Man United but then they have to offload some of their wingers and they could start with getting rid of Jadon Sancho. I would rather have Mitoma in the squad than him.
“He has proven himself in the Premier League and I doubt that Sancho will ever do that.
“I think he should go back to Germany and play in his comfort zone where he is best.”
    De Gea future
Manchester United star David de Gea has turned down a new contract as the club attempts a pay cut on his current £375,000-a-week deal.
According to The Athletic, United’s opening proposal has been rejected by De Gea.
Manager Erik ten Hag is keen for the Spain international to remain his first-choice goalkeeper for many more years.
And while the 32-year-old wants to stay at Old Trafford, he also feels his performances warrant him still being one of the best-paid players in the team.
    Rashford rubbishes claims
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has dismissed claims he is asking for up to £500,000-a-week in wages to extend his contract.
Rashford tweeted: “Just before this one starts to do the rounds! It’s complete nonsense.
“The club and myself have been respectful to one another, and that’s how it will remain.
“My focus is purely on finishing as well as possible in the league and winning trophies.”
    Brighton’s Mitoma ‘should replace Sancho’
Man United have been urged to freshen up their attack.
That’s by replacing Jadon Sancho with Brighton star Kaoru Mitoma.
Paul Parker told MyBettingSites: “I would love to see him at Man United but then they have to offload some of their wingers and they could start with getting rid of Jadon Sancho. I would rather have Mitoma in the squad than him.
“He has proven himself in the Premier League and I doubt that Sancho will ever do that. I think he should go back to Germany and play in his comfort zone where he is best.”

Brighton are plotting to hand a new deal to teen sensation Evan Ferguson.
The Ireland international is wanted by Man United, Chelsea and Liverpool after a stunning breakthrough season.
And there is also strong interest from Spurs.
But despite only giving him a new deal in autumn, Brighton are ready to improve Ferguson’s terms on another fresh contract immediately.
    Bellingham boost for Red Devils
Man Utd have received a boost in their pursuit of Jude Bellingham.
That’s because Real Madrid are only willing to spend £88million on the England star.
United are one of several clubs hoping to sign Bellingham, who is set to leave Borussia Dortmund.
Real are favourites to sign him, but they are only able to spent up to £88m… significantly less than what Dortmund are looking for.
    Potential United XI next season
Man Utd are set to dip into the transfer market this summer.
And they could line up in a totally different way next season.
United could boast a new goalie and striker in their XI, as well as a playmaker and right-back.
Is this how United will look under Erik ten Hag for the 2023/24 campaign?

    United in hunt for Mount
Man United are firmly in the race to sign Chelsea contract rebel Mason Mount.
BonusCodeBets has the Red Devils down as second-favourite for the England midfielder behind rivals Liverpool.
Man City are third in the race for Mount, who looks likely to depart Stamford Bridge for around £50million in the summer.
He has also been strongly linked with a Thomas Tuchel reunion at Bayern Munich.
    De Gea future remains uncertain
Manchester United star David de Gea has rejected a new contract as the club attempts a pay cut on his current £375,000-a-week deal.
According to The Athletic, United’s opening proposal has been dismissed by De Gea.
Manager Erik ten Hag is keen for the Spain international to remain his first-choice goalkeeper for many years to come.
And while the 32-year-old wants to stay at Old Trafford, he also feels his performances warrant him still being one of the best-paid players in the squad.
    United target gets Barcelona message
Manchester United have been put on red alert after Barcelona star Ansu Fati was urged to quit the Nou Camp by his dad.
Bori Fati said: “It bothers me how they are treating Ansu. I am very disappointed, Ansu deserved much more.
“As a father, I see Ansu [playing] for a short time and it p****s me off but I think as a father, not as a coach.
“I have told Ansu that it is better for him to have a change of scenery.[But] Ansu does not agree with me. He wants to stay and succeed at Barcelona.”
    Erik ‘jealous’ of flying Gunners
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been accused of jealousy after bemoaning Arsenal’s luck with injuries.
Sutton told BettingSites: “That could well be a bit of sour grapes maybe from Ten Hag.
“I don’t think that you can say Arsenal have been lucky with injuries. The players have obviously been doing the right things and working hard.
“Ten Hag has done well but he’s probably jealous to be looking and seeing Arsenal just miles ahead of them at the minute.”

    Good morning Man Utd fans
Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson has become the first ever manager, along with Arsenal great Arsene Wenger, to be inducted into the Premier League Hall of Fame.
Fergie said: “It’s an honour when you receive recognition like this. However, it’s not just about me as a person.
“It’s about the job at Manchester United and the bond we had over many years, so I’m also proud for the club, the staff and my players.
“My job was to send the fans home happy. United’s history and my own expectations were the things that drove me, and I then had to try and develop all my players with the same expectations and make sure we could go out and achieve them.”
Meanwhile, United star David de Gea has rejected a new contract as the club attempts a pay cut on his current £375,000-a-week deal.
According to The Athletic, the Red Devils’ opening proposal has been dismissed by De Gea.
Manager Erik ten Hag is keen for the Spain international to remain his first-choice goalkeeper for many more years.
While the 32-year-old wants to stay at Old Trafford, he also feels his performances warrant him still being one of the best-paid players in the squad.

“I have told Ansu that it is better for him to have a change of scenery.[But] Ansu does not agree with me. He wants to stay and succeed at Barcelona.”
Finally, United have given Ten Hag the green light to bid £80million for Tottenham superstar Harry Kane.
And the Red Devils want to wrap up a deal to sign Kane before the end of the season.
The 29-year-old is a long-term target for the Manchester giants, who desperately want a new striker this summer after axing Cristiano Ronaldo.
But it remains to be seen if Spurs are finally willing to sell the England captain after all those years
    Chris of life
Manchester United star Christian Eriksen is ahead of schedule and could be back in action in just 10 days.
Eriksen, 31, was expected to be out until May with an ankle injury he suffered.
But the playmaker has returned to training and there is optimism around the club that he could be available soon.
Eriksen said: “It is going well. I have just started being outside with football boots on.
“And then we take it from there, that is the next step. I have been in the gym for some weeks now and now it is time to do the next rehab session outside.”

    Jim in a jam
Manchester United could miss out on Champions League qualification even if Jim Ratcliffe takes over and they finish in the top four.
The issue stems from Ratcliffe, who is Britain’s richest man, owning Nice.
Under UEFA rules, that would mean if the Red Devils and the Ligue 1 club both finish in Champions League qualification spots, only the side finishing higher could be allowed to enter the competition.
So if Nice come third in France and United finished fourth in the Premier League, then Ratcliffe’s Frenchmen would make it.
    Just a Min
Manchester United have been handed a blow in their pursuit of Napoli star Kim Min-jae as Liverpool have entered the bidding war.
Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham have also been linked, but United are believed to be the favourites to sign Kim.
However, the Red Devils could be blown out of the water as Rai claim the Reds are intending to offer £60million for the centre-back.
The Merseysiders could be in the market for a new defender this summer to bolster manager Jurgen Klopp’s options.
    Brentford’s Raya replacement
Manchester United have been handed a boost in their attempts to sign Brentford star David Raya.
Raya, 27, has become one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in the Premier League after his impressive displays.
The Spain international is keen on a challenge after turning down two contract offers to stay with the Bees.
Raya’s current deal expires at the end of next season, and the club are now lining up a move for his potential replacement.
And Brentford have identified Freiburg star Mark Flekken.
    Marcel Sabitzer blow
Manchester United could miss out on the permanent signing of Marcel Sabitzer, who moved to Old Trafford on loan in January.
Sabitzer could be kept at Bayern Munich with new manager Thomas Tuchel set to make the decision on his future.
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the midfielder is keen on continuing his career with Erik ten Hag as his manager.
However, the Austria international’s deal with United does not include an option to buy and therefore it will be up to the Bavarians and Tuchel to decide if he will be sold.
Under former manager Julian Nagelsmann, it had seemed that the 29-year-old’s career at the Allianz Arena was over, but that could now change.
Romano suggests that the final decision will be made “around May/June” time.

    Ferguson and Wenger friendship
Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsenal great Arsene Wenger have revealed how they have put the past behind them and become good friends.
Ferguson said: “They became a tough team to compete with and we both wanted to win, which motivated us further.
“Through the years since retirement, we’d go for dinner together in a little restaurant he knows well in Switzerland.
“He is a really interesting man and I enjoy his company, but it is still my job to pick the wine!”
    Gift of the Gab
Manchester United have been dealt a transfer blow as Celta Vigo star Gabri Veiga is “dreaming about joining Arsenal”.
According to Faro de Vigo, Napoli are “willing to activate” Veiga’s £35.2million release clause in the summer transfer window.
But it seems that the playmaker has no desire to move to Naples – with the publication instead saying that he wants to “fulfil the dream of signing for Arsenal”.
The Gunners are allegedly the 20-year-old’s “favourite” team and both he and his representatives like the club’s commitment towards youth and the sporting project being led by Mikel Arteta.
    Ten Hag ‘jealousy’
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been accused of jealousy after bemoaning Arsenal’s luck with injuries.
Sutton told BettingSites: “That could well be a bit of sour grapes maybe from Ten Hag.
“I don’t think that you can say Arsenal have been lucky with injuries. The players have obviously been doing the right things and working hard.
“They’ll be doing stuff pre-training to make sure they’re conditioned and ready to play. And then warming down correctly after games.
“That’s not to say Manchester United players aren’t doing the same things but in some seasons you get more injuries than other seasons.
“But you know, as a consequence of Arsenal having that continuity while they’re doing so well. Ten Hag has done well but he’s probably jealous to be looking and seeing Arsenal just miles ahead of them at the minute.”
    Rice is right
Arsenal are becoming more confident they will win the transfer race to land West Ham star and Manchester United target Declan Rice this summer.
Rice is also attracting interest from Chelsea ahead of the summer transfer window.
According to the Evening Standard the Gunner are confident of winning the battle for the midfielder.
That works as a major transfer blow for United, who are looking for midfield reinforcement.

Swansea signed him from Atletico Madrid after he enjoyed a fantastic loan spell at LaLiga side Eibar, where he netted 19 times in one season.

He played in Ghana’s 1-0 win over Angola last Thursday but sat out of Monday’s game against the same nation with a fitness issue.
Ghana boss Chris Hughton said: “Thomas has a small injury issue and we felt it was too big of a risk to start him.”
However, the 29-year-old DID train for Arsenal on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s clash.
