What happened to Barcelona legend Samuel Eto’o and where is he now?

SAMUEL Eto’o was widely regarded as one of the best strikers in world football, playing for a number of Europe’s biggest clubs. Here, we take a look at his illustrious career and where he is now.
Samuel Eto’o won the Champions League on three occasions, scoring in the final twice
    Who is Samuel Eto’o?
Samuel Eto’o is a Cameroonian former footballer who played as a striker.
Eto’o began his career at Real Madrid, who he joined when he was 16.
He was loaned out to Mallorca initially in 2000, but signed for them permanently the same year after a successful spell.
He helped the side win the 2003 Copa Del Rey, beating Huelva 3-0 in the final, with Eto’o bagging two of the goals.

Eto’o spent four years there before attracting the attention of La Liga giants Barcelona.
This is where Eto’o came to international prominence, scoring 108 goals in 144 league games for the Catalonian club.
He helped them win three La Liga titles in 2005, 2006 and 2009, and also led the side to two UEFA Champions League titles.
Eto’o scored the equaliser in the 2006 Champions League final against Arsenal, with Barca eventually winning the game 2-1, giving them their first European cup since 1992.

He then scored the opener in the 2009 final against Manchester United, with the team winning 2-0 in Rome. This also secured the club the treble, in their first season under Pep Guardiola.
He transferred to Inter Milan in the summer of 2009, in a player plus cash deal with Barcelona for Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Under the management of Jose Mourinho, Eto’o became the first player to win the treble in two consecutive seasons with two different teams.
He set up the second goal for Diego Milito as Inter won the 2010 Champions League Final 2-0 against Bayern Munich, the third European cup of his career.
The following season was less successful for the club, but Eto’o still managed 37 goals in all competitions as Inter won the FIFA Club World Cup and finished second in Serie A behind AC Milan.
Eto’o moved to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala in 2011 which made him the world’s highest paid player at the time.
A scaling back project at the Russian club in 2013 saw Eto’o and a number of other star players sold, including Willian.
He moved to the Premier League for the first time, reuniting with former manager Mourinho at Chelsea.
Eto’o scored 12 goals in his only season with the club, including strikes against Liverpool, Tottenham, Arsenal and a hat-trick against Manchester United.
Despite this, a falling out with Mourinho saw the player leave the club at the end of the season.
Eto’o joined Everton in the 2014/15 season, scoring on his debut against Chelsea in a 6-3 loss at Goodison Park.
He scored four goals during his short stay in Merseyside, leaving in January of that season to join Sampdoria.
    What happened to Samuel Eto’o?
Eto’o’s return to Italian football was short lived however, scoring just two goals in 18 appearances for Sampdoria.
He rediscovered his goalscoring form following a move to Turkish Super Lig side Antalyaspor, scoring 44 times in 77 appearances across his three seasons at the club.
He then joined Konyaspor in the same league for the 2017/18 season, before retiring after a spell with Qatar SC of the Qatar Stars League in 2019.
Eto’o is the all-time leading goal scorer for the Cameroon national team, scoring 56 goals in 118 appearances, which also puts him second in terms of caps won for his country.
He helped his country to major honours as well, winning the Africa Cup Of Nations in 2000 and 2002, and the 2000 Olympic gold medal.
Eto’o scored in the 2000 African Cup of Nations final against Nigeria in a game they won 4-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
He also scored in the Olympic final in 2000, in a 2-2 draw against Spain on penalties after a 2-2 draw.
    Where is Samuel Eto’o now?
Eto’o has been head of the Cameroonian Football Federation since December 2021.
He’s widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers of his era, and won the African Player Of The Year award a record four times.
Eto’o was involved in an altercation with an Algeria fan at the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, whilst he was working as an ambassador at the tournament.
He later apologised for the incident.
He has been married to Georgette Eto’o since 2016, at a ceremony in northern Italy.
He has five children with Georgette, named Lynn, Etienne, Siena, Annie and Maelle.
He was declared the biological father of Erika in 2022 after a court case in Madrid.

His son Etienne is also a footballer, aiming to follow in his father’s footsteps.

Harry Kane slammed for ’embarrassing himself’ in antics that got Doucoure sent off for Everton in Tottenham clash

HARRY KANE has been slammed despite being struck in the face by Abdoulaye Doucoure last night. The Tottenham striker was involved in a fiery flashpoint during his side’s 1-1 draw at Everton.

As Kane went to push Doucoure away in the 58th minute, the midfielder raised his hands to him.
The Toffees star appeared to dig his fingers into Spurs’ No10’s eyes – with Kane subsequently falling dramatically to the ground.
Doucoure was immediately shown a red card as Kane lay in a heap, much to the fury of Everton fans.
Despite the clear nature of the dismissal, it was the Tottenham man that drew the most ire from former Spur Danny Murphy.

While commentating on talkSPORT, Murphy said: “Not enough to send him on the floor, Kane’s embarrassing himself.
“Why’s he gone over like that stitching someone up? Doucoure would’ve been sent off anyway.
“A little flick to the face does not send you the ground like you’ve just been punched… but Doucoure’s an idiot. He knows the rules, he’s let his team down.
“For Kane to go down like this is embarrassing… if my kids played like that I’d apologise and probably need to sit in a dark room with a cold flannel on my face.”

Jason Cundy disagreed, however, claiming that Kane was well within his rights to go down.
He said: “I’m no Spurs fan, but let me tell you any Everton fan that phones here wanting to have a pop at Kane, make sure you point your finger in the right direction first and have a pop at Doucoure.
“Whatever you think Kane did after that, Doucoure – idiot! You raise your arm, you put your fist or your hand or palm in a player’s face they’re going to go down.
“Kane, as far as I’m concerned, has done nothing wrong. That’s what 99 per cent of what other footballers would do, ‘Can I gain a numerical advantage over him being an idiot?’
“He’s brought it to the referee’s attention, that’s all he’s done… Doucoure’s the idiot, highlight him being an idiot.”

Kane opened the scoring just ten minutes after Doucoure’s red card, netting from the penalty spot despite Jordan Pickford’s distraction attempts, after Michael Keane fouled Cristian Romero in the box.
Spurs struggled to manage the game thereafter, however, and were under the cosh when substitute Lucas Moura was sent off on 88 minutes for a reckless challenge on Keane.
The centre-back would go on to dust himself down and have the final say, lashing a superb shot beyond Hugo Lloris in the 90th minute.
After the match, Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher debated the first red card incident.
Oh my god, how can that not be in his eye?Gary Neville
Neville, 48, defended Kane – while Carragher, 45, was more scathing.
The former said: “Oh my god, how can that not be in his eye? You can see one finger in one eye and one’s in the other.”
But Carragher added: “Harry Kane shouldn’t be going down for that. It can still be a red card for putting your hand in someone’s face, Doucoure is wrong. But I wouldn’t go down there as a player, there’s nowhere near enough to make you go down.
    ‘YOU WERE A HORRIBLE DEFENDER’
“The thing I really don’t like is players trying to get fellow professionals booked or sent off. I’ve got no problem with someone going down, winning a free-kick, jumping back up and getting on their feet.”
But Neville hit back said: “I feel like you’re re-writing history here. You were a horrible defender who used every single dark art that was available, you appealed for every decision more than anybody else that ever played, and if your striker’s went down you’d want him sent off [Doucoure].

“Now you’re talking as a pundit with a suit on.”
Neville then finished by adding: “On a serious note, as a player, if we’re going in our dressing room’s we’re going ‘Harry, well done’.”

Man Utd have downed tools since Carabao Cup final win and should have been hammered at Newcastle, slams Rio Ferdinand

MANCHESTER UNITED stars have “downed tools” since winning the Carabao Cup and need to start “strangling” each other, according to club legend Rio Ferdinand. The Red Devils returned from the international break with a limp defeat against top four rivals Newcastle on Sunday.

Ferdinand has called for some leadership in the United dressing room to prevent the season unravelling
It has left United out of the Champions League places with just 11 games remaining despite a strong start to 2023.
Erik ten Hag’s men lost just one of 15 games before their trip to Wembley to beat Newcastle in the League Cup Final at the end of February.
Since then, the club’s shaky form has seen them slaughtered at Anfield, draw against struggling Southampton and labour to cup wins over West Ham and Fulham.
Former United defender Ferdinand, who won 14 trophies during his long stay at Old Trafford, has had enough.

He said on his Five Youtube channel: “It seems like they’ve won the Carabao Cup and downed tools.
“They think they’ve done enough, that’s what it feels like. They’ve got to get out of this rut.
“The performance on Sunday. Seize the moment! It’s the moment, it’s top four. Take the opportunity. Understand what is there. What are the requirements for you?
“Luke Shaw mentioned they had a meeting after the game. They need to be strangling each other, there needs to be some pushing and shoving, up in people’s faces. So people understand this is the serious business end of the season.

“If David de Gea doesn’t play we’re bang in trouble, it’s probably five or six. I thought mentally they’d got beyond this. I thought we’d eradicated the feeling of the Brentford game. I hope it won’t rear its head again.”
Unlike their rivals for top four, United remain in other competitions and face having their resources stretched as the season reaches its conclusion.
A two-legged Europa League quarter-final against Sevilla awaits ten Hag’s side as they prepare to face Spanish opposition for the fourth time in Europe this season.

Gary Neville refuses to say whether he would start Weghorst or Cristiano Ronaldo for Man Utd.. as Carragher left stunned

GARY NEVILLE has refused to say whether he’d start Wout Weghorst or Cristiano Ronaldo for Manchester United, leaving Jamie Carragher stunned. After Weghorst’s underwhelming display in the 2-0 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday, boss Erik ten Hag’s selections came under the microscope.
Gary Neville danced around the subject of who he’d pick between Wout Weghorst and Cristiano RonaldoCredit: Sky Sports
Neville, 48, showed a chart to try and back up his pointCredit: Sky Sports
Despite being brought in as a stop-gap January loan from Burnley following Ronaldo’s exit, the Dutch forward has started virtually every game since moving to the Red Devils.
With Weghorst having only scored two goals in 19 appearances, Neville used a chart of alternative stats to show his value over Ronaldo.
But he refused to go as far as to say that the 30-year-old is better than his former team-mate at present.
Appearing on Sky Sports, Neville said: “Since Sunday that seems to have been a moment, he has played basically every moment since coming in.
    Read More Football Stories
“I called him a placeholder because United didn’t invest in a striker United would want.
“This experiment has to stop, Weghorst has to come out, it can no longer go on, the reason he continues to play and why Ronaldo is no longer at the club, you see his 19 starts against Ronaldo’s 19 starts.
“Weghorst has 12 wins, four draws, three defeats, he has only scored two goals but the team has scored 37 goals, with Ronaldo it was 19 starts, they won three less games, drawn three, lost four more with him in the team, he scored 11 but the team itself only scored 23, they are massive differences.
“It is the strangeness of football is having a player who isn’t good enough to be a Manchester United forward but has brought more profit to the team.

“I believe he (Ronaldo) is the greatest player of all time.”
Neville, 48, then claimed that Weghorst’s continued selection is due to the underlying data.
He added: “I think ultimately the reason he left Ronaldo out was because of the stats, I think it is clear Weghorst isn’t fit to lace Ronaldo’s boots but those are stark stats playing in same period with same team-mates, he was really poor on Sunday, he shouldn’t be there, but the reason he is there is because of those stats.”
Carragher, 45, then pressed for a definitive answer as to which forward would be better for United at the moment… but Neville opted to dance around the subject.
He replied: “I don’t think either of them at this moment in time should play for Man United. It is more important who Ten Hag picks.
“I don’t know… Ronaldo now is playing in Saudi Arabia, he left, that was a provocative chart, I put the chart up because of why Ten Hag continues to pick him.
“I don’t know who I would pick, you would move it game to game. If I was playing at Old Trafford I’d play Ronaldo, away from home probably Weghorst.”
Ronaldo, 38, has scored nine goals in eight games since moving to the Saudi Pro League.
    ‘IT’S EASY TO CRITICISE’
While still at United during the first half of the season he blanked Neville pitchside.
In a world exclusive interview with Sun columnist Piers Morgan, Ronaldo admitted: “To listen as ex-colleagues or team-mates criticise you, when they only see one point of view. It’s easy.
“It’s easy to criticise, I don’t know if you have a job in television that they must criticise to be more famous. I really don’t understand it.

“It’s hard when you see people who was in the dressing room with you criticising that way.”
Then asked if he was friends with Neville or fellow former team-mate Wayne Rooney, Ronaldo scathingly added: “They are not my friends, they are colleagues. We play together, they’re not coming, we’re not ever having dinner together.”
