People are only just realising why it’s called a hat-trick – and term didn’t start in football

FOR a striker, scoring a hat-trick is just about as good as it gets. The Premier League has seen its fair share of goalscoring geniuses leaving opposing defenders as well as goalkeepers red-faced after a stunning performance that sees them scoring three goals.
Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland knows everything about hat-tricksCredit: Getty
The term hat-trick originates from cricket, instead of footballCredit: AP
Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero knows all about it as he tops the Prem charts of most hat-tricks with 12 under his name.
Aguero left City in 2021 but the Manchester giants weren’t deprived of goals as Erling Haaland joined just a year later and has since taken the English top flight by storm.
Haaland has netted a total of FIVE hat-tricks this season across all competitions.
And the star striker may lead to the invention of a new word after netting a staggering FIVE goals against RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

The Norway international counts four hat-tricks in the Premier League, which puts him on par with Harry Kane and Alan Shearer as the only players to ever score that many triples in a single campaign.
But fans are only just getting to know the origins of that term, which doesn’t come even from football.
The word actually comes from cricket, and there is a very good reason behind its inception.
The term was used when a bowler took three wickets from three consecutive balls.

The player’s respective club would then give them a hat to celebrate the achievement.

After the game, Ten Hag blamed fixture congestion with United playing nine times in April.
He said: “He [Rashford] doesn’t look well. This was avoidable. All science and research tell you players need a certain time to recover.
“It is also part of the schedule that we are now finding ourselves in this situation and now we can only pray he is not dropping off.”
Ferreira’s men also play nine times this month and he did not have sympathy with Ten Hag’s situation.

The gaffer of the Brazilian club said: “Football here has fantastic things, but there are others that are inhumane. Nine games in a month.
“The Manchester United coach the other day complained that Rashford was injured due to the sequence of games they have.
“I would like to ask him or tell him: ‘In these next two months, I’m going to have nine games in both months.
“Shut up, because you don’t know what you’re saying’.”

The outspoken boss previously claimed his wife flogs one of his classic cars from his collection every time he gets sent off.

Arsenal vs Chelsea at the Emirates was originally due to take place on Saturday April 29 at 5.30pm.
The thrilling game is sure to play a huge part in this season’s title race as Arsenal look to keep ahead of Man City, with the Gunners winning the first meeting at Stamford Bridge 1-0 in November.
But Chelsea’s trip to their London rivals will instead now take place on Tuesday May 2 at 8pm after the Met expressed concerns over policing.
Fans of both clubs have been left fuming, with Arsenal also expressing their disappointment at the news.

A Gunners statement read: “The Premier League has announced that our home league match against Chelsea will now take place on Tuesday, May 2, kicking off at 8pm (UK time).
“This change has been made as a result of the Metropolitan Police revising its position on policing the match.

“After working to try to find a solution with the Met Police, we are very disappointed with the impact and disruption this fixture change will cause to our supporters, particularly after this match had been initially approved for a Saturday evening kick-off.”
A Premier League statement added: “The initial scheduling of this match was approved at a Safety Advisory Group (SAG) meeting in February.

“However, the Metropolitan Police has now revised its position regarding the kick-off time and requested a further SAG meeting which determined the match had to be re-scheduled.

Arsenal plot transfer for Brazilian wonderkid Matheus Goncalves dubbed Flamengo’s best EVER young prospect

ARSENAL are eyeing another Brazilian teenager after being alerted to Flamengo winger Matheus Goncalves. And they have been advised to make a quick move for the exciting 17-year-old in a bid to head off rival interest from Manchester City, Ajax and Benfica.

The League leaders have an extensive network of talent scouts scouring the South American markets under the direction of sporting director Edu.
In the past few years they have been responsible for Gabriel Martinelli’s £6million move from Brazilian minnows Ituano as well as last summer’s £3m signing of Marquinhos from Sao Paulo.
Now they are tracking the progress of right winger Goncalves, who has been described as the best young prospect to ever come through Flamengo’s academy by former manager Dorival Junior.
And Arsenal are aware of the buzz surrounding the left-footed teenager who only made his senior debut in October but is already being tipped for future stardom in Europe.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
He is currently under contract until 2025 and his deal contains a staggering release clause of £88m.
But he wouldn’t cost anything like that figure and could be available for as little as £2.5m in the summer.

Virtually all of Goncalves’ 11 senior appearances for Flamengo have come off the bench but he scored the winning goal against Rio rivals Botafogo in his only start for the first team in February.
But he also has a raw side to his game and was sent off for two yellow cards in the recent game against Vasco da Gama despite only coming on as an 89th-minute substitute.

But now he is back in full training, and his return is a boost for manager Mikel Arteta ahead of the remaining eight games.
Nketiah has scored nine goals this season, including six while deputising for the injured Gabriel Jesus after the World Cup.
Jesus is starting to motor, scoring in his last two Prem matches, but Nketiah’s return will give Arsenal plenty of attacking options as they look to maintain their six-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
But there is still no sign of defender William Saliba, who has missed Arsenal’s last three games with a back injury.

Where the nine stars Liverpool sold before their title-winning season are now including Sturridge and Mignolet

LIVERPOOL let go of nine players the summer before their first Premier League triumph. The Reds have undoubtedly seen a golden period of success under Jurgen Klopp, but the German boss had to cut ties with some big names in order to win big.
Daniel Sturridge was prolific for Liverpool during his time with the club
Daniel Sturridge and Simon Mignolet were among those who found themselves out of the door at Anfield and looking for new opportunities.
And agonisingly for them, they then had to witness their former team finally win the 2019-20 league title just months later.
Here SunSport details where the nine players who narrowly missed out on being part of that history making squad ended up…
    DANIEL STURRIDGE
Sturridge spent six years on the books at Liverpool before being released in July 2019.

Despite scoring 21 goals in 29 appearances for the Reds in the 2013/14 campaign he was unable to land a mega move.
The Englishman joined Turkish side Trabzonspor before leaving for Perth Glory the following season.
He is yet to announce his official retirement from football, but doesn’t currently have a club and can often be seen on TV offering his thoughts as a pundit.
Sturridge finished second behind his strike partner Luis Suarez in the race for the 2013/14 Premier League golden boot
    ALBERTO MORENO
Alberto Moreno struggled to make it as a left-back at Liverpool and his time was certainly up after the emergence of Andy Robertson.

    CONNOR RANDALL
Connor Randall appeared just eight times for Liverpool in the midst of a flurry of loan spells during his time with the Merseyside club.
He too was released in July 2019 and made the move to Bulgarian top flight side Arda Kardzhali.
The 27-year-old left after one season and now plays in the Scottish Premiership for Ross County.
Connor Randall made a rare appearance in a League Cup Quarter Final against Southampton
    RAFAEL CAMACHO

Rafael Camacho joined Liverpool from Manchester City’s youth team
    DANNY INGS
Danny Ings had no problems succeeding after making his move away from the club.
The 30-year-old now plays for West Ham after spending time at Southampton and Aston Villa.
He has bagged eight times in the league this season, the same number of times as current Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez.

    SIMON MIGNOLET
Simon Mignolet left the Premier League side in a £6.5million move back to his home country of Belgium to join Club Brugge.

Simon Mignolet (right) made 204 appearances for Liverpool
    RYAN KENT

Kent still plays for the Glasgow club and has been a crucial player for them since making the switch to the Scottish Premiership.
He has won the league as well as the Scottish Cup featuring over 200 times for Rangers and contributing to 90 goals.
Ryan Kent was managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard whist at Rangers
