Chelsea ‘extend Enzo Fernandez’s deal until 2032’ just months after £106m transfer to be longest contract in football

CHELSEA have extended Enzo Fernandez’s contract by another year to keep him at the club until 2032, according to reports. The 22-year-old joined the Blues from Benfica at the end of the January transfer window for a British transfer record £107million.
Enzo Fernandez’s lengthy contract has been extended by another yearCredit: Alamy
Fernandez agreed an eight-and-a-half-year deal until 2031 as the club amortised the lucrative fee – which works out at around £11m per season – over a lengthy period in order to circumvent Financial Fair Play regulations.
The option of an additional year was also included within Fernandez’s deal.
And now TyC Sports journalist Cesar Luis Merlo is reporting that has been triggered by Chelsea.
It means Fernandez is now under contract with Chelsea until the summer of 2032 – when he will be 31 years of age.

The decision to extend his contract just three months after joining the club comes as Uefa are reportedly preparing to change the rules regarding the length of contracts.
Europe’s governing body are looking at implementing a five-year limit on the length of a player’s deal in a bid to close the loophole being exploited around amortisation and Financial Fair Play.
That could mean Chelsea also look to extend the deals of January signings Mykhailo Mudryk and Benoit Badiashile in the coming months.
Mudryk’s contract runs until 2031, while Badiashile’s ends just 12 months earlier.

Meanwhile, Fernandez has hit the ground running at Stamford Bridge by impressing in the heart of Chelsea’s midfield.
Speaking about the World Cup winner acting as a key figure in the dressing room, interim boss Frank Lampard said: “Enzo is becoming a leader, but he’s 22, I think it’s quite difficult for us to talk about that, he’ll have to find his way.

“Games like [the quarter-final first-leg tie at the Bernabeu] are a great chance to perform and show the personality that makes you a proper leader.”
In response, Fernandez said: “I always dream to be a leader because when I started, I always wanted to be an example.
“To be defined like that so young makes me really proud. I always give my best and try to be an example for everyone.”
Chelsea will look to end a run of five games without a win when they host Brighton on Saturday.
Lampard’s side could move back into the top half of the Premier League table with a positive result against the high-flying Seagulls. More

Real Madrid ‘step up £44m hunt for Reece James transfer but fans joke the Chelsea man ‘failed the Vinicius test’ in loss

REAL MADRID have reportedly stepped up their chase of Reece James. The Chelsea star could be available for just £44million this summer.

Fans joked James has already failed the Vinicius Jr testCredit: AFP
But some fans jokingly fear James may not be up to the mark after “failing the Vinicius Jr test.”
James, 23, has become one of Chelsea’s most important players after working his way through the academy.
He has already won a Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup after 145 games.
And Chelsea rewarded James’ talent by doubling his wages on a new five-year deal in September.

However, the Blues face a fire-sale this summer after Todd Boehly’s £600million spending spree unbalanced the books.
Real Madrid are big fans of James as they eye a new right-back to replace Dani Carvajal.
And Marca claims Los Blancos are ready to step up their pursuit by making a £44m bid, with Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies also on their radar.
They believe it could be enough to secure James’ signature with Chelsea needing a quick cash injection.

Real got the chance to witness the defender first-hand in last night’s Champions League win over the Blues.
But James’ attacking threat was nullified by Carlo Ancelotti’s clever tactics.
And he also struggled to keep up with flying winger Vinicius Jr, who had a field day on the left wing.
Indeed, some supporters jokingly fear James may not be good enough for Real after his below-par performance.
One said: “Reece was being evaluated without knowing yesterday and it doesn’t look good.
    “He failed the Vini test.”
Another declared: “He had a stinker this week.”
One added: “James is finished, should not be a target at all.” More

Man Utd player ratings: Marcel Sabitzer impresses at No10 but Tyrell Malacia struggles in crunch Europa League tie

MANCHESTER UNITED had a host of good performers before they collapsed in an eventful night at Old Trafford.Loan signing Marcel Sabitzer will take most of the plaudits as his first-half double set the tone for the Red Devils.

Tyrell Malacia was not at his best and scored an unfortunate own goalCredit: Getty
The Austrian midfielder proved to be a fantastic choice to start for manager Erik Ten Hag, who was questioned as to why Christian Eriksen was not in the starting eleven.
He played as the most advanced midfielder, with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro in behind him, but seemed to almost find himself thriving in the false nine position more often than not.
Bruno Fernandes ran him close in a bid to be the best performer on the night, after providing a wonderful assist and controlling the game when United were in charge.
It was a magnificent United display until they collapsed in the last 10 minutes of the game, which saw them concede twice, both of which were own goals from Tyrell Malacia and Harry Maguire.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
Here is how SunSport’s Lloyd Canfield rated the Red Devils display.
    David De Gea – 6
It was a solid display from the Spaniard in net, whose wait for a win over Sevilla in a career-spanning eight attempts goes on.
He made a great save to deny Nianzou just before the half-time whistle and there was not a lot that he could do about the Sevilla goals after two deflections from close range.
    Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 6
Solid whenever he was required, made a few good sliding tackles and clearances.

Linked up well with Antony going forward, generally well positioned throughout the game. Dealt well with Acuna all game long on the right-hand side.
    Raphael Varane – 6
Performed well in the first half before being substituted for Harry Maguire due to what looked like an injury.
The Frenchman was always composed, solid at the back and strong in the air when his team needed him. Would have been rated higher if it wasn’t for his minutes.
    Lisandro Martinez – 7
Another great performance from the man they call ‘The Butcher’ in some parts of Manchester.
Nothing got past him today, and he was ever-dependable for Erik Ten Hag’s side. Great performance as he marshalled the back line and covered for Tyrell Malacia at times.
Unfortunately for him and for United he looked to pick up a pretty serious injury, and had to be substituted in the second half.
    Tyrell Malacia – 4
Malacia looked the weakest of the United defence, as they missed Luke Shaw through injury.
The youngster was not great and gave the ball away on a few occasions. As for the own goal, he fell asleep at the back post, and allowed Navas to creep in behind him to give Sevilla hope.
    Casemiro – 6
Another solid showing for United in his return to the Red Devils midfield.
Did his job, and everything just seems so much calmer with his presence on the pitch. Some nice passes going forward, but nothing special from the Brazilian.
    Bruno Fernandes – 8
A brilliant performance from the Portuguese magnifico, marred only by an unfortunate yellow card for handball on the edge of his own area, which will see him miss the second leg in Spain.
His assist for Marcel Sabitzer’s first goal was a perfectly placed ball that split the defenders.
Subbing him off for Christian Eriksen was a mistake by Erik Ten Hag.
    Marcel Sabitzer – 9
Hardly put a foot wrong for United tonight, and scored both goals for United.
Both of them were fine left-footed finishes as he often found himself in a false nine position, rather than his usual midfield slot.
Almost got a brilliant backheel assist in the dying embers of the game too, but was let down by some poor finishing.
    Jadon Sancho – 6
Thought he had opened the scoring inside thirty seconds for United, but then failed to really impact the game.
Had a few good moments, and showcased his brilliant footwork on occasion, but lacked the end product.
    Antony – 8
Another one of United’s better performers tonight, he caused no end of problems for Marcos Acuna on the right hand side.
Skilful, direct and packed full of ability, he was unfortunate not to be on the scoresheet when he rattled the woodwork with a great effort on his wonderful left peg.
    Anthony Martial – 7
Played really well for 60 minutes before being substituted for Wout Weghost in the second half.
Got a wonderful assist for Marcel Sabitzer’s second goal, and looked dangerous every time he got on the ball in the attacking third. Good in the build-up phase for the Red Devils too.
    SUBS
    Harry Maguire – 4 (HT)
Scored a very unfortunate own-goal as Sevilla equalised late on. Failed to really inject the composure into the backline that Varane and Martinez did.
    Christian Eriksen – 5 (62′)
Didn’t really impact the game, or show the quality that we know he has in the locker. Bruno Fernandes was controlling the game before Eriksen came on.
    Wout Weghorst – 5 (62′)
Missed a half-chance following some good work from Marcel Sabitzer. The Dutch striker looked a step down from Anthony Martial in the first half.
    Read More on The Sun
    Anthony Elanga – 5 (62′)
Failed to impact the game in any real way.
    Facundo Pellistri – 5 (81′)
Only played ten minutes, and looked full of energy on the right hand side, created a few half-chances but nothing too concrete. More

Man Utd Supporters Trust beg Glazers to end takeover hell amid third wave of bids as they admit huge fear

MANCHESTER UNITED Supporters’ Trust has called on the Glazers to quickly conclude their sale of the club. The club was put up for sale in November but the American owners have been happy to wait for their asking price to be met.

There are willing suitors but the Glazers further delayed the takeover process this week by opening up a third round of bids.
The Trust [MUST] have called on the family to avoid further delay, pointing out Erik ten Hag needs to know how much funds will be available in the summer.
They claim United are in “dire need of new investment” amid interest from Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatari Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani.
MUST released a statement that reads: “When it was announced in November that the Glazers were undertaking a “strategic review” and inviting offers to buy the Club, MUST welcomed the news and went on to urge the majority owners to move ahead with the process with speed, so that any period of uncertainty was as short as possible.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
“Nearly five months on, we read speculation that offers from prospective buyers remain below the Glazers valuation, and that a third round of offers will now be invited.
“With Erik Ten Hag having made such great progress in his first season, and with the vital summer transfer window a matter of weeks away, the news of these delays and further prolonged uncertainty are of great concern.
“Erik needs to know what resources he has to spend so he can make the signings the club needs, and the whole management resources of the club need to be focussed on supporting him in that. That cannot be the case with the future ownership so unclear.
“We are also unable to move forward on major investment projects – not least the stadium redevelopment as we remain in limbo.

“We are in dire need of new investment, which undoubtedly requires new ownership. MUST, along with United fans all around the world, are calling for this process to be concluded without further delay.”
United legend Gary Neville also slammed the Glazers for delaying the takeover and accused them of trying to drive up the price.
He said: “I think what scares Man Utd fans most is the feeling this Man Utd ownership are running this process to drive a massive price up.
“To try to somehow establish a level which means two of them can stay in and the rest of the family that want out can be bought out by an American fund who wouldn’t mind owning a minority or significant share but not the entirety of the share.
“That’s the biggest concern. The whole emphasis at this moment in time from Man Utd fans is this has to be the end of the Glazer ownership.
“They’ve run out of money, they’ve not invested in the stadium… the fans want a new stadium, whether that’s Old Trafford refurbished or a new one rebuilt, we need new facilities.
“Man Utd’s stadium is behind a lot of the big [clubs] in Europe.
“I still think there is a focus that this isn’t one big charade that the Glazers are running to try to establish a value which would be for their brothers and sisters to exit and the couple that wants to stay in to stay.
“There’s a priority at this moment in time for them to go.” More

The 28-year-old slid in to block a Nemanja Gudelj shot near the edge of the box.
The ball hit his arm from point-blank range, but it seemed impossible for him to get his arm out of the way.
Fernandes will now be suspended for United in next week’s crucial second leg, and a host of former players and supporters vented their anger at the decision.
Ferdinand wrote: “Bruno to miss the 2nd leg.”

    Another fan tweeted: “Shocking booking.”
A fellow supporter commented: “That is absolutely ridiculous. What’s he supposed to do?”
The incident occurred just moments after Sevilla’s Erik Lamela escaped a red card after appearing to stamp on Casemiro.
And Treble-winning United legend Peter Schmeichel was another that could not believe what he was watching regarding Fernandes after seeing Lamela get away with one.

The Daily Express predicts that manager Jurgen Klopp may have to wield the axe on several players to raise funds for reinforcement, especially if the Merseysiders miss out on Champions League cash.
Liverpool may start by letting go of players whose contracts run out in June.
Adrian, Naby Keita, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Roberto Firmino could all leave.
Arthur is highly likely to return to Juventus after an unsuccessful loan stint at Anfield.

Caoimhen Kelleher, Sepp van den Berg, Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips could all find themselves on the chopping block as well after failing to earn first-team opportunities.
Joel Matip has struggled for fitness in the last 18 months and may have to make way if Klopp is able to get an upgrade at centre-back.
The same goes for Kostas Tsimikas, even though the left-back has shone bright while deputising for Andy Robertson.

Man Utd fans hail ‘genius’ Erik ten Hag for Anthony Martial masterstroke after astonishing start to Sevilla clash

MANCHESTER UNITED fans have hailed “genius” Erik ten Hag after Anthony Martial shined against Sevilla. The striker made just his tenth start of the season against the LaLiga side.

Anthony Martial played a pivotal role in Manchester United’s second goalCredit: AFP
But he was deployed in a slightly different role by Ten Hag, operating as a false nine and coming deep to collect the ball.
That allowed team-mates such as Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcel Sabitzer to make advanced runs, wreaking havoc on the Sevilla backline.
In the build-up to United’s second goal Martial dropped deep to receive the ball, advanced with the ball and took on a defender before picking out Sabitzer with a delightful ball over the top of the defence.
The midfielder scored to add his second of the match and left United fans purring with Ten Hag’s astute tactics.

Many praised the Dutchman for starting Martial as a false nine, when he could have been tempted to play the Frenchman out wide given Marcus Rashford’s injury.
Instead Ten Hag picked Martial to play the lone striker role instead of Wout Weghorst, and fans praised the decision.
One said: “Ten Hag is a genius. Bruno deep, Martial false 9 and Sabitzer up top. Mental tactics.”
Another added: “Martial making football look so easy, Sabitzer? sign him ! Ten hag is the best! 💪”

Robertson was left incensed by the alleged incident, which occurred on the half-time whistle at Anfield last weekend.
Television replays appeared to show Hatzidakis strike the full-back.
Referee Paul Tierney then gave the Scot a yellow card for his protestations.
The officials were subsequently surrounded by Liverpool players, including a furious Robertson.

And they were booed off by the crowd after exchanging stern words with Reds skipper Jordan Henderson, who fought his team-mate’s case.

But the FA have confirmed that following an investigation, no further action will be taken.
They said: “We have thoroughly reviewed all of the evidence in relation to the recent incident at Anfield involving the Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson and match official Constantine Hatzidakis, and we will be taking no further action.
