Arsenal player ratings: Gunners title hopes take blow as Holding and Saka struggle to make mark against West Ham

ARSENAL’S title hopes took a dent after a 2-2 draw at West Ham. Gabriel Jesus got Mikel Arteta’s outfit off to the perfect start by opening the scoring after seven minutes.

And it appeared to be a game where Arsenal might blow away the Hammers when Martin Odegaard converted a crisp volley to make it 2-0 after just ten minutes.
However, things began to turn sour when Thomas Partey had the ball robbed off of him by Declan Rice, leading to the penalty with Said Benrahma duly converted.
Bukayo Saka, ever so reliable from 12 yards this season, then missed a penalty shortly after the break before Jarrod Bowen volleyed past Aaron Ramsdale.
The result leaves Arsenal with a lead over Manchester City of just four points.
Here’s how SunSport’s Tony Robertson rated the Gunners.
    Aaron Ramsdale – 6
Unfortunately dived the wrong way for the penalty before tipping over a potentially dangerous header later on.
Could have done better with Jarrod Bowen’s volleyed equaliser shortly after the break.
    Ben White – 7
Got an assist with the opener thanks to a perfectly weighted pass across the goal.

Failed to get out quickly enough with to hold an offside trap when Bowen fired home the equaliser.
    Rob Holding – 5
Caught out in behind a couple of times when isolated against Michail Antonio. Struggled in the physical battle against the West Ham star all game.
Like White, guilty of failing to get up quickly enough when Bowen ran in behind for his equaliser.

    Gabriel – 6
Gave away a foul on Lucas Paqueta for Benrahma’s penalty.
Covered Holding well when Antonio looked to have an advantage, though like Holding had a tough time when isolated against Antonio one on one.
    Kieran Tierney – 7
Replaced Oleksandr Zinchenko in the line up and was solid throughout.
Failed to track Bowen on the equaliser. Subbed off after 85 minutes as Arsenal went for the win.
    Thomas Partey – 6

Slipped in White when he set up the opener. Always available for as a passing option but left far from his best when it came to his more defensive duties.
Gave the ball away to Declan Rice in the build up to the penalty and received a yellow card for a cynical foul shortly after. Subbed off after 66 minutes.
    Granit Xhaka – 6
Not afraid to get down and dirty against West Ham.
Gritty performance but was unable to lift up the rest of below par midfield.
    Martin Odegaard – 6
Scored a crisp volley but went quiet soon after.
Far from his creative best and subbed off after 90 minutes.
    Bukayo Saka – 5
Missed from 12 yards just before Bowen’s equaliser. Started brightly but faded, culminating in the penalty miss.
Wasted a great chance by going alone when three on two on a counter-attack in the 70th minute.
    Gabriel Martinelli – 6
Beautiful cross to set up Odegaard’s volley, but like his captain went quiet for much of the rest.
    Subbed off after 85 minutes.
    Gabriel Jesus – 8
Gabriel Jesus put in a fine display was but able to do nothing to stop the Gunners collapseCredit: Rex
Scored an early goal to try settle any Arsenal nerves. Appeared to work a treat as the Gunners scored a swift second before the team’s defensive collapse.
Led the line well and produced some brilliant touches in a role more similar to a false nine. Subbed after 66 minutes.
    Substitutes
Leandro Trossard (on for Jesus 66mins) – 7
Once again a lively performance off the bench but couldn’t offer a big enough spark for the rest of the Gunner’s misfiring attack.
    Jorginho (on for Partey 66mins) – 6
Gave the Gunners a more secure passing option than Partey had offered prior to him.
Reiss Nelson (On for Martinelli 85mins) – 6
Few decent touches but not really enough time to make mark.
    Read More on The Sun
Fabio Vieira (On for Tierney 85mins) – 5
Offered little after coming on. Like Nelson too little time for impact.
Eddie Nketiah (on for Odegaard) – N/A
Not enough time to make mark. More

West Ham 2 Arsenal 2: Gunners drop huge points in Premier League title race and squander another two goal lead

After throwing away a two-goal lead to draw away to Liverpool, Mikel Arteta’s side once again let certain victory slip from their grasp when once again leading by two goals.
But this one, against relegation-threatened West Ham, will hurt a lot more.
Arsenal looked ready to deliver carnage in east London when Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard both scored in the opening 10 minutes.
Yet Said Benrhama pulled one back with a penalty, Bukayo Saka missed from the spot after the break and then Jarrod Bowen equalised three minutes later.

While there was a roar at the London Stadium, it would have been just as loud up in Manchester from those in blue shirts.
Arsenal may still be four points clear but City have a game in hand and these teams meet each other in 10 days.
It would be unfair to say Arsenal have completely blown the title but they have certainly pressed the self destruct button.
This was a bad day for Arsenal. Thomas Partey, outstanding this season, had a stinker while Aaron Ramsdale was not at his best.

Arsenal should have been sharper in the final 30 minutes as they are no longer in Europe yet West Ham, who were away in Belgium in the Europa Conference, had just as much energy in what was a big point for the relegation-threatened Hammers.
Arsenal have a game on Friday at home to Southampton to increase their lead as Manchester City are in FA Cup action.
Arteta’s side made an early statement by scoring a brilliant opening goal. This was clever, patient football at its finest. Saka and Odegaard were involved before Ben White delivered the slide-rule cross for Jesus’ easy far post tap-in.
Right-back Vladimir Coufal appeared to be unaware that he had a player directly behind him although you could use the argument against Aaron Cresswell for the second goal three minutes later.
Cresswell lost concentration, failed to keep his position and when Martinelli delivered a second cross – after West Ham’s Thilo Kehrer cleared the first – Odegaard was left completely free. One of Arsenal’s top three players this season, Odegaard unleashed a brilliant volley which he made look a lot easier than it was.
In contrast, Arsenal made this match a lot more difficult than it should have been by handing West Ham a way back.
Thomas Partey was to blame for losing possession to Declan Rice to start the attack and for the penalty itself, Lucas Paqueta still seemed to instigate contact with Gabriel before throwing himself into the air.
Arteta was furious, also believing Rice had handled the ball but after a VAR check, David Coote’s decision stood and Benrahma tucked his spot-kick into the corner.
The entire mood of the game changed in an instant. West Ham were playing with confidence we had not seen in their terrible opening spell.
Yet while David Moyes’ side ended the half well, the second period was a disaster with Michail Antonio penalised for a clear handball.
Yet Saka delivered a penalty even worse than the one he missed at the Euro2020 final as he hammered the ball wide.
Yet within an instant, Arsenal’s title hopes took an even heavier blow.
Gabriel’s header upfield was met with a long punt into the area by Kehrer and Bowen, being played onside by the Arsenal defence, gambled by hitting the ball first time. It came at an awkward angle and was not a clean hit but Ramsdale could only push the effort against the post and into the net.
Arsenal lost confidence and stopped doing the simple things well, something they have been excellent at this season.

    23. If VAR is going to add positives to the game, we need to get rid of this mindset that it is there for ‘clear and obvious errors’.
It should be there to apply the laws of the game, nothing else.
The constant Howard Webb apologies are tiresome and of no consequence to teams when it costing them points.

This seems to suit Forest more as they play this way all the time.

    Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man Utd
    11. It has been a lively start by both teams.
This game is finely poised as they go in search of the opening goal.

    Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man Utd
    9. De Gea seems to limping somewhat.
ten Hag gets Jack Butland to start warming up as a precautionary measure.

    7. Big chance for Forest as Johnson’s flick on finds Awoniyi.
He looks to stroke the ball home but it is blocked by Wan-Bissaka.
Both sides close to opening the scoring here.
    Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man Utd
    5. That gives Forest a chance to run at the United centre back now.
Any mistake from Maguire could see him get his marching orders.
The hosts loft a free kick towards the box but it is headed clear.

    Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man Utd
    3. Navas did well to block that shot with his foot.
Maybe Fernandes needed to lift the effort more.
Big chance for the visitors to take the lead early on there.
Harry Maguire picks up a yellow card for hauling a player to ground.
    Nottingham Forest 0-0 Man Utd
    1. United look to press from the off.
Sancho overruns the ball and the hosts win the ball back.
They lose it again and United come forward, the keeper gets a hand to a cross but the ball drops to Fernandes.
His shot is blocked but that was a big chance for the midfielder.
Kick-off: Nottingham Forest vs Man Utd
We are underway at the City Ground.
It is an electric atmosphere in Nottingham.
Man Utd get the game started.
    First goal key to game
With both sides having suffered a dent to confidence and form of late, the first goal of the game today is even more important.
If the hosts get it, United’s reshuffled defence could crumble.
Should the visitors get it, the pressure mounts on both Nottingham Forest and their manager.
    United with potential injury concerns
Man Utd had a nightmare in the week with two key players falling foul to injuries.
It seems that goalscorer Marcel Sabitzer may have picked up an injury in the warm up today at the City Ground.
While this has yet to be confirmed, it would no doubt mean Christian Eriksen slotting into the starting line-up.
    Forest needing change of fortunes
Having lost four of their last five league games, Nottingham Forest currently occupy the third relegation place, although Everton are only above them on goal difference.
However, they have only lost one of their last eleven Premier League games at the City Ground.
They are looking to set a new club record of scoring in fourteen consecutive Premier League games at home.
    History favours Red Devils
Man Utd have won their last nine fixtures against Nottingham Forest in all competitions.
They have scored at least three goals in each of their last six league games against today’s opponents.
Forest are on a run of nine league games without victory, the last time they had such a run it was ended by a 1-0 victory against Liverpool.
ten Hag looking for cutting edge
As he arrives at the ground looking like the latest addition to the cast of Peaky Blinders, the Dutch manager will be looking for a clinical touch to his team today.
All too often they have invited sides back into games that they should have put to bed.
With a huge opportunity to all but guarantee Champions League football next season, three points are key.

Harry McShane, who passed away at the age of 92 in 2012, scored eight goals in 57 games for United between 1950 and 1954.
The Scot also played for Blackburn, Huddersfield, Bolton and Oldham.
But McShane’s greatest career moment came when United won the Football League First Division title in 1952.
He played 12 times that term and even scored the winner in the Manchester derby.

However, McShane was cruelly denied a winners’ medal as he fell short of appearance regulations by just two matches.
Yet there is now good news for his family, with Man Utd successfully appealing to the EFL to grant McShane his medal.
Current regulations mean former stars can be recognised if they played just five times.
And McShane’s Hollywood superstar son Ian has been invited to Old Trafford for a special ceremony.

Ex-keeper coach Fred Barber hails tough guy Aaron Ramsdale as he bids to win the Premier League

AARON RAMSDALE and his Arsenal team-mates must show mental toughness in the final eight matches to win the Premier League title. But boss Mikel Arteta will have no worries over goalkeeper Ramsdale, who has shown northern grit throughout a tough journey to reach the top.
Aaron Ramsdale produced a series of stunning late saves for Arsenal in last Sunday’s 2-2 draw at LiverpoolCredit: Getty
As a kid, the hungry Gunners No 1 trained in all conditions, including a swamp at Fred Barber’s soccer school in Stoke.
That tough schooling moulded Ramsdale’s character which will be vital in the pressure cooker of the title race as Arsenal bid to hold off champions Manchester City.
England keeper Ramsdale, 24, stepped up in the 2-2 draw at Liverpool last Sunday with a series of stunning late saves to secure a valuable point.
Barber told SunSport: “I first saw Aaron when he was ten at my Friday hourly sessions.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
“He was a skinny kid, a little runt. He had a cheeky face and I liked that because I was a character too.
“I treated the kids like professional keepers and you either worked hard or thought, ‘This is too hard and drift off’.
“Some keepers would be sick because the drills pushed them to the limits.
“As a coach I was trying to find out how far they could go and what they were made of.

“It didn’t frighten Aaron. His attitude was brilliant. The more I pushed him the more he wanted it.
“Kids can be emotional but he worked hard. He had that northern grit.
“I grew up in the north east and Aaron is from Stoke, both industrial and working class backgrounds. You have to be a grafter to get to where you want to go.
“People think he’s got all the Adidas gear on and he’s playing for Arsenal.
“But they don’t realise how he has learnt his trade playing for Chesterfield, Wimbledon, Sheffield United, Bournemouth.
“Only one in a 1,000 make it but the ones who graft tend to make it more than the gifted ones.
“When you cross the white line and have the pressure of playing in front of crowds you have to be able to handle it.
“Aaron is mentally strong. He plays in the Premier League, he’s gifted but he’s a normal lad who has had to work hard to get there.”
Barber himself made almost 400 football league appearances for clubs like Darlington, Walsall and Peterborough over a 17-year playing career.
The 59-year-old, now Crewe’s goalkeeper coach, freelanced for several top-flight clubs before he was appointed Sam Allardyce’s keeper coach at Bolton in 2004.
Ramsdale’s inspiration as a goalkeeper was Bolton stopper Jussi JaaskelainenCredit: Action Images – Reuters
Barber, who wore a mask during his career, coached and developed the likes of Jussi Jaaskelainen, Ali Al-Habsi, Adam Bogdan and Tomasz Kuszczak.
But Ramsdale showed his desire to join those Prem keepers even from an early age.
Barber recalled: “I remember the training pitch was underwater. It was tanking it down, thunder and lightning and I sat in my car thinking, ‘There’s nobody coming to the session. That’s great, I can go home and I won’t get drenched’.
“Then the little b****r turned up!
“Only two or three die-hards would be there and Aaron was one of them.
“We were training in a swamp. We tried to find a dry piece of grass to train, it was like the Kes movie where they were covered in mud.
“You look for characters. You can get fair weather footballers but Aaron was there every time rain or shine, ice and snow. He’d be shivering but it’s all part of your armour.
“80 per cent of football is in your head, so you have to be mentally tough because every mistake is highlighted on television.
“It has killed some goalkeepers like Peter Enckleman or Massimo Taibi. We didn’t see much of them after high-profile mistakes.
“You have to take the flak as well as the good. Mistakes will hurt Aaron inside but it’s how you deal with it.”
Barber took Ramsdale to Bolton’s academy during his teenage years along with his own son Jonathan, also a promising keeper.
Twice a week, the pair would leave school at three, get a lift from Barber’s wife to Knutsford where the then Trotters keeper coach would pick them up and take them to a two-hour training session at Bolton and then drop them home at 9.30pm.
But Ramsdale – against Barber’s wishes – was released by Bolton’s academy at the age of 15 because he was too small and getting lobbed too often.
Barber added: “He’s had his knocks, released by Bolton but he was like ‘I’ll show people’.
“It has made him hungrier and he’s proved people wrong.”
Barber sees similar traits in Ramsdale, who faces West Ham today, as Jaaskelainen, who had a successful 15-year Prem career with Bolton and the Hammers.
He added: “Aaron is just like Jussi. Blonde hair, same stance with their hands and feet.
“The save Aaron pulled off against Mo Salah against Liverpool last week was similar to ones Jussi has made.
“I’d still say Jussi is the best keeper I’ve coached. Aaron still has a way to go.
“His kicking is better than Jussi and his shot stopping is up there but Jussi played into his forties.
“Goalkeepers make mistakes and don’t mature until they are 28 but Aaron has another four years before he comes into his prime.”
Kind-hearted Ramsdale donated 40 Premier League match balls to Barber’s soccer school worth up to £4,000 with costs spiralling post- Covid and also name-checked one of his first coaches after his Anfield heroics to show he has not forgotten his roots.
Barber said: “I’ve had Premier League and international keepers representing England, Finland and Oman.
“But I’ve never had a Premier League winner and that would be a great achievement.
“It’s comic book stuff, something out of the Victor or the Beano.
“For someone to achieve their dream of playing in the Premier League, play for England and win the league would be a fairytale.

United legend Neville, who has been vocal about the Glazers, was not happy with the news and vented his frustration on Twitter alongside a picture of the firm’s mission statement.
He said: “No thank you! This doesn’t work for United! The Glazer PR machine keeps leaking this type of minority partnership out there bi-weekly whilst stressing it’s a confidential process. Full Sale Only.”
The Glazer family announced a third round of bidding this week with new offers to be submitted by the end of the month which prompted Finnish businessman Thomas Zilliacus to announce he would not be doing so.
That left British billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani as the remaining publicly interested parties understood to be willing to bid again.

The pair are both determined to take full control at Old Trafford.
But so far the highest offers, from Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim Bin Al have only reached around £5bn – short of the Glazers’ valuation of £6bn.
There were chaotic scenes last month when the deadline for bids was extended by 48 hours.
It was a move that saw Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim withdraw their offers before resubmitting them.

Newcastle cult hero was denied entry to US over dentistry dispute leaving manager ‘frustrated’

But to then-manager Alan Pardew’s surprise, Cabaye was denied entry into the nation due to having an alleged unpaid dental bill.
Pardew said at the time: “It was a minor incident involving a bill. He claims he paid it and they claim he didn’t.”
The US had claimed Cabaye had an unpaid dental bill from work he had done in the country when at Lille.
Then 25-year-old Cabaye had signed for the Magpies that summer and was one of the key stars of the squad which would go on to finish fifth under Pardew in the 2011/12 season.

However, the inability to integrate Cabaye with the rest of the group in pre-season left Pardew feeling very “frustrated”.
He added: “It’s one of those things but it became very frustrating.
“There was no talking them around and, unfortunately, the process was too long for us to rectify it.
“It would have been great to get him integrated with the group because he’s a class act.”
