Thiago Silva slams Todd Boehly and tells Chelsea owner ‘STOP… we need a strategy in place’ after £600m transfer spree

THIAGO SILVA has criticised the strategy of Chelsea owner Todd Boehly following their Champions League exit. The Blues suffered another 2-0 defeat to Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening as they went down 4-0 on aggregate in their quarter-final tie.

It effectively brings an end to Chelsea’s hopes of achieving anything this season as they sit 11th in the Premier League table, 10 points adrift of a European place with just seven games remaining.
The turmoil on the pitch comes after a £600million spending spree across last summer and January.
Boehly, who only arrived last year, has already sacked managers Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, appointing Frank Lampard until the end of the campaign, only for the Chelsea legend to lose his first four games in charge.
And Silva has lamented the chaos that has ensued at Stamford Bridge over the past 12 months.

Speaking to TNT Sports Brazil, he said: “I think the first step has been made, an incorrect step, but it has been made.
“We can’t be blaming the managers if we don’t take responsibility. It’s a hard period for the club, with a lot of indecision.
“Change of ownership, new players arriving – we had to increase the size of the changing room because it didn’t fit the size of the squad.
“A positive point is that there are amazing players in the squad but on the other hand there are always players that are going to be unhappy.

“There is always going to be someone upset because not everyone can play. The manager can only pick 11 from a squad of 30-something – that’s tough.
“Some can’t make the squad, we signed eight in January, we need to stop and put a strategy in place otherwise next season we could make the same mistakes.”
Silva was also quick to stress a new manager may not have the required impact.

He added: “Everybody talks too much about replacing managers. I think we, as players, must also take responsibility.
“We have had three managers this season, plus a fourth with Bruno where we failed to win. We have lost today and with Lampard, we have failed to win.
“Everybody is talking about the manager but we must look at what has been done wrong and try to change.”
Silva’s Chelsea contract runs until 2024 and he is expected to stay at the club next season.
But with the Blues set to fail to qualify for the Champions League, the South American has admitted the Real Madrid defeat could have been his final game in the competition.
He said: “It might have been my last match in the Champions League.

“I have only one year left on my contract and my career is reaching the end. It’s a very sad day.

I was using Haaland’s pinching tricks when he was a kid and even got Totti sent off with them, says Arsenal legend Keown

MARTIN KEOWN revealed he used Erling Haaland’s dark arts long before the Manchester City sensation was terrorising Premier League defenders. And the Arsenal legend even managed to get Italian legend Francesco Totti sent off with a cheeky pinch.

Haaland, 22, is tearing up scoring records by the week and could potentially fire Pep Guardiola’s side to a treble.
But it is not just his goal-scoring which has made him so dangerous with the Norwegian also a pro at mind games.
Brentford defender Ben Mee revealed earlier this week that the Norwegian is a fan of the ‘dark arts’ and has begun pinching defenders to put them off their game.
But Arsenal legend Keown says it was a tactic that he also used to frustrate opposition strikers in his own heyday.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
Writing for the Mail, he said: “There are different types of defenders in football and I definitely fell into the category of a ‘contact’ centre half. I wanted to leave an impression on my opponent from the off.
“I wanted to get into [my opponent’s] head, test his temperament and upset his focus and concentration. Occasionally, that would include pinching him in the lower back.
“I first encountered it myself in a European game with Arsenal and decided to bring it back to England.
“Some opponents refused to react, such as Gianluca Vialli. But that physical contact proved too much for Francesco Totti, who could not control himself and was sent off for repeatedly trying to elbow me in the face in a Champions League game in March 2003.”

Keown adds that the “sky is the limit” for Haaland due to his mix of attributes to get around defenders.
He has 32 goals in 28 games and is not far off breaking Alan Shearer and Andy Cole’s joint-record for most Premier League goals in a season.
The pair claimed 34 strikes in separate seasons in the mid-90s but those were within seasons when 42 games were played instead of 38.
A few more Haaland goals could help City catch Keown’s former club Arsenal, who currently have a four point lead at the top of the table. More

Arsene Wenger hits out at Todd Boehly and tells next Chelsea manager to include his special Arsenal clause in contract

ARSENE WENGER has hit out at Chelsea owner Todd Boehly after the American’s dressing room visit.Following the Blues’ 2-1 defeat to Brighton on Saturday, Boehly laid into at his “embarrassing” team in an hour-long rant after caretaker boss Frank Lampard had already spoken to them.

One player labelled the situation as “weird” – and former Arsenal manager Wenger has admitted that he would not have been happy with his owner doing that during his time as a boss.
And the Frenchman even revealed he always had a special clause put in his Gunners contracts to avoid such situations, and recommended future Chelsea bosses do the same.
Asked if he would put up with Boehly’s antics while appearing as a pundit on beIN Sports, Wenger said: “No, I wouldn’t, that was always clear in my mind.
“I always put that in my contract.

“The advice I give to young coaches when they make contracts, I say make what is important for you, put that clearly in your contract that you are the only one.
“Nobody can buy a player without your agreement, nobody can interfere with the team, and you are solely responsible for managing the team.
“After that you stand in a different way because usually when a club wants you, you are in a strong position.
“Once you’ve lost three games and you want to put that in a contract it’s already more difficult.”

Wenger, 73, was unimpressed when it was suggested that Boehly’s message could be perceived as inspirational.
He said: “Well, again, the comeback… I don’t believe in these kind of things because if I’m paid to motivate the team, to manage the team, I do not want somebody else to do my job.
“It happened many times where the president goes into the dressing room and doesn’t talk well at all, but the team wins because it’s a good team, he thinks after it’s because he spoke to them.
“It’s not always a consequence of their speech, most of the time it’s the quality of the team.”

Chelsea crashed out of the Champions League last night after losing 2-0 to Real Madrid at Stamford Bridge, sealing a 4-0 aggregate KO.
He again visited the dressing room after the defeat.
The Blues are now out of all cups and sitting 11th in the Prem.
On where things have gone wrong under Boehly’s ownership thus far, Wenger concluded: “I would say I’m worried for Chelsea.
“I agree that the new president comes in and invests a lot of money.
But if you don’t invest well the £500m, then you have a real problem for the futureArsene Wenger
“I prefer somebody invests £500m but over five years £100m, because you can really change the team.
“But if you don’t invest well the £500m, then you have a real problem for the future.
“They haven’t invested well, no. That is basically their problem today, they still have the same weaknesses they had before, they do not score enough goals, they have a lot of possession but not a lot of conversion of chances to score goals.
“We have another example tonight, they brought Joao Felix in December and in the most important game of their season [vs Real Madrid] they take him off because he doesn’t score goals as well.
“I believe as well when you sign players for eight years it’s good for the Financial Fair Play because you can amortise the transfer over eight years.
“But if the player is not right you have to pay the player for eight years, it’s a huge burden for the future, it’s a massive risk.”

Seven striker transfers who could solve Chelsea’s nightmare in front of goal including Kane and Osimhen

CHELSEA’S finishing came back to haunt them in last night’s Champions League exit to Real Madrid. The Blues crashed out of Europe after failing to score one single goal against the defending champions.

Todd Boehly is surely on the hunt for a new striker this summerCredit: Alamy
The 4-0 aggregate scoreline was compounded by a series of fluffed opportunities in the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
The likes of Marc Cucurella and N’Golo Kante spurned glorious chances to give Chelsea a lifeline.
And a new striker has to be top of Todd Boehly’s shopping list this summer.
Despite his £600million spend, Chelsea’s top scorer this season is No10 Kai Havertz with just nine goals.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
The two out-and-out strikers in the squad, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Armando Broja, boast just four goals between them.
And even Romelu Lukaku’s underwhelming haul of 15 last term is now looking good.
Christopher Nkunku, scorer of 17 goals this season and 35 last year, is already on his way to west London.
And there could yet be a permanent move for Joao Felix, despite only scoring twice since his January loan from Atletico Madrid.

But in terms of a proper No9, just who can Chelsea go for when the transfer window opens?
Here, SunSport’s Anthony Chapman looks at seven options for the Blues…
    HARRY KANE — TOTTENHAM
THE England captain, 29, looks certain to leave his boyhood club this summer.
Spurs failed to deliver the silverware promised under Antonio Conte.
And despite their position in the table, they are almost in as much turmoil as Chelsea — but without the promise of better days ahead.
Harry Kane looks certain to leave Tottenham this summerCredit: Getty
Kane is a proven goalscorer, netting 273 times for Spurs with a further 55 goals for his country.
A move to Stamford Bridge would be highly controversial given the rivalry between Tottenham and Chelsea.
But with Kane’s contract expiring in 2024, a mega-money offer from Boehly could turn Levy’s head and provide him with ammunition to rebuild Spurs’ squad for their new manager.
    VICTOR OSIMHEN — NAPOLI
THE Nigerian, 24, is possibly the most sought-after player in world football this summer.
Osimhen has netted 26 goals in a stellar season for Napoli.
And he is certain to lead the Italians to their first Serie A title since 1990.
Osimhen has made no secret of his desire to play in the Premier League.
Victor Osimhen is enjoying a fine season for NapoliCredit: Getty
Indeed, his idol is none other than Chelsea legend Didier Drogba.
Osimhen’s sleek combination of power and pace could work wonders with Chelsea’s creative players, who make plenty of chances but have nobody in the box to put them away.
Osimhen is sure to come with a hefty price-tag this summer.
But with Boehly willing to spend big on the right player, and Osimhen thought to not be concerned by a lack of Champions League football for one year, this transfer could be the most likely one on the list.
    IVAN TONEY — BRENTFORD
THE newly-capped Three Lions star has enjoyed a stellar rise up the ranks throughout his career.
Toney, 27, spent seven years plying his trade in League One before Brentford took him to the Championship and then the Premier League.
He has 66 goals in less than three years for the Bees, including 19 this term.
Ivan Toney has gone from strength to strength in his careerCredit: Getty
And Toney has the physical and technical hallmarks of a classic Chelsea No9.
The one thing going against the ace is a potential upcoming ban for betting.
But Toney has proven his class in the top flight time and again.
And with Brentford always ready to negotiate for the right price, he could come easier than other names at bigger clubs.
    MARCUS THURAM — EINTRACHT FRANKFURT
SON of France legend Lillian, Thuram has found his feet this season with 16 goals for Frankfurt.
Capable of playing as a striker or winger, he has also become an integral part of France’s national squad.
Thuram, 25, has improved his composure with each passing season.
And the best news is that he will be available for absolutely nothing after deciding to quit Frankfurt on a free transfer when his contract expires in June.
Marcus Thuram is available on a free transfer this summerCredit: AFP
But Chelsea will have to move fast if they want to secure Thuram’s signature.
That’s because Man United, Tottenham, Newcastle, Juventus and Inter Milan are all plotting to offer him a deal.
And Chelsea may have go over-the-odds with wages as they will not be able to offer Thuram any European football.
RANDAL KOLO MUANI — EINTRACHT FRANKFURT
ANOTHER Frankfurt forward who has shined this season.
Muani, 24, has established himself as a top forward in Europe with 20 goals in his first season with the Germans.
Like Thuram, he too has become a regular in Didier Deschamps’ France side.
And he is now thought to be a top target for Bayern Munich as Thomas Tuchel looks for a striker.
Kolo Muani would certainly fit in well at Chelsea after developing an all-roundness to his game.
Randal Kolo Muani has 20 goals in his first season with FrankfurtCredit: AFP
However, Man Utd have made enquiries into his availability at the behest of Erik ten Hag.
And incredible reports last month claimed the Red Devils are ready to pay an eye-watering £105m fee.
Those are the kinds of numbers Boehly would be expecting to deal with regarding someone like Kane or Osimhen.
And it could be just too much to take, even for the splurge-happy American.
    OLLIE WATKINS — ASTON VILLA
The former Brentford man, 27, has been on fire since the return of football after the World Cup.
Watkins has struck 14 times in the league alone for Villa.
And after moving to a central role, he has helped Unai Emery’s men storm the table into a European spot.
Ollie Watkins has fired Villa up the tableCredit: Getty
Watkins hit 14 goals in his first season for Villa too.
And Brentford fans have not forgotten his plunder of 25 strikes when they narrowly missed out on promotion in 2020.
Despite not being the biggest name around, Watkins could be exactly what Chelsea need up top — hard graft, a strong mentality and an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time.
But Villa will be loathe to let him go, and having paid £33million themselves could demand an over-the-top fee.
    FOLARIN BALOGUN — ARSENAL
STRANGER things have happened in football.
But this one cannot be ruled out for several reasons.
Balogun, 21, has taken Ligue 1 by storm with 18 goals for loan side Reims.
He’s been putting the likes of Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe to shame all season.
Folarin Balogun has set the French league alight this termCredit: AFP
But despite impressing, Balogun is not guaranteed a spot in Arsenal’s squad next season — let alone the starting XI.
Mikel Arteta already boasts numerous players up front and may struggle to find room for Balogun.
The youngster does not want to be loaned out again though.
And that could open the door for Chelsea to make an offer Arsenal cannot refuse.
    Read More on The Sun
It doesn’t hurt that Balogun is from across the pond either, despite having 13 caps for England’s U21s.
And especially if Christian Pulisic is sold, Boehly could jump at the chance to have another fellow American in his side. More

Paolo Wanchope says Erling Haaland can win Champions League for Manchester City

PAOLO WANCHOPE says Erling Haaland can win the Champions League for Manchester City – because he’s a chip off the old block. When the striker was in nappies at just one month old, his dad Alf-Inge Haaland and Wanchope, were tearing it up at the club.
Paolo Wanchope played alongside Alf Haaland at Manchester City in 2000
In July 2000, Alf-Inge joined City from Leeds in a £2.5million deal.
Wanchope then became a record signing for a club preparing to play top-flight football for the first time in more than four years when he arrived for £3.65m at the start of August.
And the duo enjoyed dream home debuts against Sunderland in May 2000.
Costa Rica forward Wanchope combined with Haaland to complete a hat trick that day and also became the provider for the right-back to score in the 4-2 win at Maine Road.
Paulo Wanchope, speaking on behalf of 888sport said: “The atmosphere at Maine Road that day was crazy.
“To score three goals and to set up Alf, made all the fans go crazy.
“It was a great start for us both at home. I felt that connection with the people and now when I have the chance to go back to see City play the fans always remember me and treat me like I’m still playing.
“Alf was a very competitive guy. I love seeing his son now competing and giving 100 percent like his dad used to give.
    Most read in Champions League
“I remember Alf was a great professional, had a lovely personality to be around and to train with. I have great memories with him.”
Wanchope has rubbed shoulders with some of the Premier League’s finest over the years, including Paolo Di Canio at West Ham and Robbie Fowler at Manchester City.
He scored 12 goals for the Hammers in a team also featuring the emerging talents of Rio Ferdinand, Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick.
But he doesn’t know how Pep Guardiola would have coped if he had both him playing and Erling Haaland at City.
Wanchope added: “I played alongside great players, Di Canio, Fowler.
“I don’t know if me and Haaland could play together or not, that depends on the style. At the moment Guardiola could try me or Haaland but of course he would have to start Haaland!
“He is incredible. A big striker and one of the best right now. He will improve even more at City with Guardiola and on the coaching staff.
“They have a good chance to go all the way in the Champions League and play in the final and win it now with a top striker.”
Wanchope has even recommended that Guardiola and his players listen to salsa music before their quarter-final second-leg tie with Bayern Munich to calm any nerves – despite them already being 3-0 ahead.
Afterall it was salsa music that formed the backdrop of the day that would change Wanchope’s life forever.
It helped him score a dazzling strike at Old Trafford, on the day he made his bow in English football for Derby County in a famous 3-2 victory.
He cut Manchester United to ribbons, shimmying past Nicky Butt on halfway, dancing infield with the ball glued to his feet.
He glided past Phil Neville and outmuscled Gary Pallister before rifling a low drive beyond Peter Schmeichel and into the goal.
Wanchope said: “I will never forget what the manager Jim Smith did.
“I was really anxious to play the game. The night before that game I couldn’t sleep.
“I woke up every two or three hours because I was really anxious.
“I always say it was really good from Smith when he asked me when we were going to Old Trafford what kind of music I like and I said to him salsa music.
“He put it on the couch and the boss, and everyone was trying to dance salsa so that was really special from Smith.

“Maybe City should listen to some salsa music to relax before Bayern Munich like I did before my debut.”

I fell out with Arteta and his Arsenal staff over their touchline antics – I hope Man City win the title

But despite losing 3-0 – courtesy of a brace from Eddie Nketiah and a Mohamed Elneny header – it was the antics of Arteta and his staff, rather than his team’s performance, which riled up Robinson.
Speaking to talkSPORT, he said: “I have seen it first hand (Arteta’s antics), it isn’t necessarily always him though.
“I think there is one or two behind him that don’t conduct themselves great at time, which I was shocked by.

Arsenal would be knocked out of the competition by title rivals Manchester City in the fourth round, and Robinson also hopes Pep Guardiola can clinch the title ahead of his former pupil.
Robinson declared: “I want City to win it [the title], because of Guardiola.”
And asked whether his rationale came down to his fractured relationship with Arteta, he added: “Yeh, probably.
“I just love Pep Guardiola and I’m just addicted to watching Man City play. I respect what Arsenal have done, they have been outstanding.
“Without what Arsenal have done this season, the league would have been completely boring. It will go down to hopefully the last few games.
“That’s why we do have the best leagues in the world, and part of that is having competition for Manchester City over the last three or four years and they are certainly going to do that.”
Arsenal’s gap to City is now down to just four points after they threw away another two goal lead against West Ham.
Consequently, the clash between the pair on April 26 has grown to be potentially the most pivotal game of the season. More
