That was after Julian Nagelsmann pulled out of the race for the job following a series of talks with the club.
Poch has been out of work since he was sacked by Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.
Chelsea contacted him over the job and now several reports are claiming that he has boosted his chances of landing the gig after “a series of positive talks” between him and the West London club.
Vincent Kompany, who has led Burnley to instant promotion back to the Premier League, is the other man on Chelsea’s three-man shortlist.

And now The Guardian have revealed the identity of the mystery third candidate – and it is Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou.
The Australian, 57, looks set to win a second consecutive Scottish Premiership title and has impressed with his attacking style of play.
The Hoops are currently 12 points clear of Rangers and have also won consecutive League Cups since his arrival in 2021.
He also has experience of the Champions League after guiding Celtic into the competition this season, although they were eliminated at the group stage.

Postecoglou, who managed Australia at the World Cup in 2018, has also worked in his homeland, Greece and Japan but has not managed in any of Europe’s big leagues.
He remains an outsider at the moment with Pochettino still firmly in the driving seat.
Chelsea are also believed to have considered Feyernoord’s Arne Slot.
Pochettino is one of Tottenham’s most successful and popular managers in recent history – despite failing to win a trophy with the club.
He averaged 1.89 points per game – the most for any Tottenham boss in Premier League history with a minimum of 38 Premier League games in charge.
The ex-Southampton chief capped off his five-year stint at White Hart Lane by leading Spurs to the 2019 Champions League final, where they lost to Liverpool.
But he was sacked just months later following a poor start to the 2019-20 campaign before eventually taking over at PSG in January 2021, winning the Coupe de France and Ligue 1 prior to his departure.

JULIAN NAGELSMANN’s similarity to Thomas Tuchel is one of the reasons Chelsea turned away from the German boss, reports say. The former Bayern Munich manager is believed to no longer be in the running for the top job at Stamford Bridge.

Mauricio Pochettino is now the favourite for the role with Vincent Kompany and one other unknown candidate still in the running.
But since Graham Potter’s sacking, many considered Nagelsmann to be the frontrunnner for the job.
It came as a surprise to some fans to discover that the 35-year-old head coach was no longer under consideration.
The Independent report that the Chelsea hierarchy deemed him “too like Tuchel”, the manager that the Todd Boehly-led hierarchy had already dismissed.

Tuchel has since gone on to replace Nagelsmann at Bayern Munich, while Nagelsmann is also believed to be open to an approach from Tottenham.
He is reported to think that he would not be able to achieve the level of success he wanted in Chelsea structure’s.
And is reported to not have been particularly keen on taking over in west London.
Spurs could be one of several vacancies of big European clubs this summer, with question marks hanging over the future of PSG boss Christophe Galtier and Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid.

One unnamed Spurs supporter managed to get into the crowd in hope of watching his rivals fall apart.
Fall apart they did before Bukayo Saka’s late equaliser.
The fan records himself watching the game before departing just before the full-time whistle.
He unzips his black jacket and green body warmer to reveal the Spurs’ cockerel badge on his replica shirt.

One said: “Treated himself on St Totteringhams Day.”
Another Arsenal fan said: “Came to watch arsenal finish above your lot and say we bottled it yet your lot have bottled the league since 1961.

Fulham 2 Leeds 1: Pereira strike plunges visitors deeper into relegation trouble as fuming fans chant for Bielsa

LEEDS were plunged further into the relegation mire with fuming fans chanting for “Marcelo Bielsa”.Harry Wilson and Andreas Pereira were on target for Fulham but they were both helped by Illan Meslier’s butter fingers.

It was an afternoon to forget for the French goalkeeper whose flapped clearances actually ASSISTED both the goals.
There was hope for Leeds when Patrick Bamford pulled one back on 78-minutes – but the hosts held on.
It left the away end about what they once had, as chants for Bielsa rang around Craven Cottage.
You can’t exactly blame them with them facing a return to the Championship following three straight Prem defeats, which includes the home humiliations to Crystal Palace and Liverpool.
Meanwhile it was all hunky dory for Fulham with boss Marco Silva returning to the dugout with renewed passion to continue Fulham’s dream push towards Europe.
The Portuguese boss was hit with a two-game touchline ban after his red card for protesting Willian’s dismissal in the FA Cup defeat at Manchester United last month.
And now he is back to challenge his side, on 45 points, to break the club’s Premier League record of 53 points set in 2008-09.
The first-half wasn’t exactly what dreams were made of.
Fulham’s best chance came from a Tosin Adarabioyo header which forced Illan Meslier to leap like a cat and claw the ball away from the top corner – but turns out the defender was offside anyway.

Leeds hit back with Roca stinging the hands of Bernd Leno with a 20-yard free kick.
Fulham emerged from the restart finally looking like a side with a better plan of how to score a goal.
Willian shimmied beyond four away shirts before scraping the post with a low drive.
It was no surprise when the Brazilian lynchpin of Marco Silva’s side then played a vital role in the 58th minute opener.
He pounced on a Antonee Robinson pass before lashing a shot at Meslier who could only flap it straight to Wilson.
The Welsh wizard let the ball bounce and rifled a shot off the underside of the bar and in.
Pereirea fired a warning shot of a second by slapping the crossbar with an inch-perfect free-kick, but he really made Leeds pay on 72 minutes.
Meslier nudged Antonee Robinson’s cross into the path of Pereira who blasted home into an empty net.
But there was hope when Crysencio Summerville’s backheel was deflected into the path of Patrick Bamford who poked it in after a desperate scramble in the box.
Fulham responded with another menacing set-piece from Willian but Meslier managed to mop up the damage this time.

Fans all spot ‘most blatant’ offence in Fulham vs Leeds and can’t believe the ref hasn’t punished it

Fulham defender Tim Ream had the ball on the edge of the area and played it back to his goalkeeper Bernd Leno.
German stopper Leno put his foot on the ball around, but as Leeds’ Brenden Aaronson closed him down, he then bent down and picked up the ball.
The American midfielder simply ran away without protest while Leno just marched forward before restarting play with the incident going almost unnoticed by everyone.
An eagle-eyed worker at BT Sport DID spot it – and even the commentators admitted they had failed to see it.

A later while later, the commentator said: “A moment or two ago, we think that there was a deliberate backpass that the referee didn’t pick up on.”
Jermaine Jenas was sitting in the commentary booth too, and the ex-Tottenham and England midfielder said: “You know what, it was one of those situations as the referee did not even flinch.
“He must have thought that it must have taken a deflection of some sort.”
One fan labelled the incident a “joke” after it went viral on Twitter.

Some even blamed Aaronson for not noticing, although not everyone was convinced. One tweeted: “People saying the players should have spotted it yet their job is to play football there’s 5 people who’s job is refereeing the game.”
However, it later emerged at half-time that the ref’s decision was in fact correct.
Footage showed that the ball from Ream had grazed the studs of Leeds’ Rodrigo Moreno on it’s way to Leno.
The linesman informed the referee, who correctly allowed play to go on.
