Man City vs Arsenal tale of the tape: How Premier League title contenders and their managers compare ahead of huge clash

MANCHESTER CITY welcome Arsenal to the Etihad on Wednesday for a mouthwatering title clash.Just five points separate the two sides and City have two games in hand over their rivals.

That means Mikel Arteta’s side must win to keep things in their hands, though their recent record against the champions is abysmal.
City have won the last 11 Premier League clashes between the pair and have not lost to the Gunners at home since January 2015.
Arsenal have won just one of the last 15 meetings – a 2-0 FA Cup semi-final win in 2020.
And even a much improved Arsenal side struggled in their two games against Pep Guardiola’s serial winners this campaign.

City knocked Arsenal out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 win at the Etihad in January, and then dealt their rivals a huge blow in the title race with a 3-1 win at the Emirates a month later.
Top goalscorer Erling Haaland found the net on that occasion and he is the dangerman once again for City.
He is the top scorer in the Prem with 32 goals this season, while team-mate Kevin De Bruyne leads the way with assists on 15.
City boast more experience than Arsenal, both in terms of squad age and in winning know-how, having claimed the title in four of the past five years.

Guardiola is also a more accomplished manager than Arteta and has 191 Premier League wins compared to his protege’s 72.
The Spaniard has masterminded four of City’s eight top-flight title wins while Arteta, who worked as a coach under Pep at City, has won only one major trophy – the FA Cup.
He arguably has better players at his disposal too, with City’s squad worth £929million.
Jack Grealish alone cost £100m and the England winger has found form in recent weeks, including a goal in the key Emirates win.
By comparison Arsenal’s squad is worth £787m, and they have hit a sticky patch with three draws on the bounce against Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton.
Meanwhile City are unbeaten in 16 matches and will be buoyed after reaching the FA Cup final following a 3-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday. More

Fans are only just realising why its called a ‘derby’ in football when two big local rivals meet

THERE are few things in football that get the nerves tingling more than a big derby match. From Celtic v Rangers to Liverpool v Everton to Fenerbahce v Galatasaray, the most heated matches often come when two teams who are geographically close meet in a huge game of football.
Liverpool’s home of Anfield is just a stone’s throw away from rival Everton’s Goodison ParkCredit: Getty
These derby clashes are often spoke about for days and provide memories few fans will ever forget.
But many football supporters have no idea why these high-profile games are called “derbies”.
The phrase is often thrown about in the media as fans look forward to a grudge match where emotions will undoubtedly be running high.
But few know that the origin of the phrase is disputed and could potentially go back centuries.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
One theory is that the phrase comes from the Derby horse race which was founded by the Earl of Derby in 1780, according to the BBC.
Another theory also has the Earl of Derby at the heart of it.
Some believe the phrase originated from a match between Liverpool and Everton in 1914.
Anfield and Goodison Park are famously separated only by Stanley Park, which was then owned by the Earl.

It is believed the “derby” term was coined in a newspaper in reference to the park’s ownership with the phrase quickly spreading to other local clashes.
Derby matches sees two teams who are close in location and stature go head-to-head in a game.
But the term has also been used to describe matches like El Clasico despite Barcelona and Real Madrid far apart in terms of geography but sharing a long and bitter history as Spain’s two most successful clubs.
The fiercest derbies in England includes the North London Derby between Arsenal and Tottenham, the Manchester Derby between United and City and the Merseyside Derby.
Rivalries abroad also often catch the eye, with the likes of Marseille and PSG in France, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos in Greece and Boca Juniors and River Plate in Brazil famous for their intense atmospheres. More

The Spaniard came under fire following his errors in United’s Europa League exit at the hands of Sevilla.
During the game, De Gea made two critical errors leading to goals.
Throughout the season, the United star has been able to produce some brilliant saves as well as some costly errors.
Now, according to Portuguese outlet A Bola, United are looking at Costa as a potential replacement.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
The Portuguese shot-stopper has been rated as one of the best young goalkeepers in Europe since breaking into the Porto team.
The report has suggested that Costa has a £66million release clause.
If it were to be activated would make him the second most expensive goalkeeper in history.
The potential transfer would only have been beaten by the £71m Chelsea paid for Kepa Arrizabalaga.

However, it would be a bigger investment than the £65m Liverpool paid Roma for Alisson Becker.
Costa is not the only goalkeeper to be linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Brentford’s David Raya has also been touted with a switch after he rejected two contract offers from the Bees.
De Gea’s contract at United expires at the end of the season, but he is set to sign a new deal on lower waged. More

The ex-Birmingham City star, nicknamed the “Driffield Destroyer” because of his tough reputation, landed a punch on his cousin after tempers flared.
Woodhouse has now been fined £8,885 after he admitted assault by beating at Hull Magistrates’ Court, Hull Daily Mail reports.
The horror unfolded on August 20 last year after the family fell out during a gathering at the pub.
Alexander had said something unpleasant to Woodhouse and kicked his leg in the toilets.

Woodhouse then attempted to clear the air later in the beer garden but his cousin was said to be aggressive towards him.
The boxer said he could “anticipate” what was going to happen so punched Alexander before the family member could hit him first.
JPs heard Woodhouse has a string of previous convictions, including assaulting a police officer during another pub incident.
He was fined £6,500 and ordered to pay £300 compensation, a £2,000 surcharge and £85 costs for the latest attack.

Former England under 21 star Woodhouse played for a number of clubs after beginning his career with Sheffield United.
He also had stints at Peterborough United, Hull City, Grimsby Town and Rotherham United.
The midfielder played for Birmingham City between 2001 and 2003 when the club were in the Premier League.
He retired in 2006 and launched a boxing career where he was crowned both British and English light-welterweight champion.
Woodhouse also fought for the WBO inter-continental welterweight title in 2011 but lost to Frankie Gavin.
He left the sport winning 24 of his 31 fights – 13 of them by a knockout – with just seven defeats.

Brendan Rodgers would be an excellent choice for next Spurs manager, but delusional Tottenham fans could ruin it

IF Tottenham fans thought they had reached rock-bottom at Newcastle on Sunday, with their bullet-ridden team 5-0 down after 21 minutes, then they should consider this very real possibility. That Mauricio Pochettino — the best Spurs manager of the last half-century, who had made it clear he fancied a return there — turns up at Chelsea and makes a success of it.

It is difficult to quantify which of these bitter London rivals are in the biggest hole right now.
Is it Spurs, torched by their own manager Antonio Conte, then leaving his hapless mate Cristian Stellini in interim charge, only to sack the caretaker and appoint Ryan Mason as caretaker- caretaker, with sporting director Fabio Paratici having just been banned from world football for 2½ years?
Or is it Chelsea, in the bottom half of the Premier League, having spent £606million and with Poch likely to become their FIFTH boss of the season under a new regime which had boasted about stability and long-term planning?
Either way, either club could have appointed Pochettino to shovel up their sewage. Tottenham weren’t interested and the Blues clearly are.
    READ MORE TOTTENHAM NEWS
The vast majority of Spurs fans wanted the Argentinian back. Given that he left on warm personal terms with Daniel Levy in 2019 — and given that little has gone right since — re-hiring Pochettino seemed a no-brainer for a deeply unpopular chairman.
Take out Pochettino’s 5½-year reign, when Spurs massively over-achieved as runners-up in the Champions League and Premier League, and Levy’s 22-year stewardship of Spurs has, in footballing terms, been an unmitigated failure.
That Poch has apparently been blanked by Levy is bizarre even by Tottenham’s standards.
The Stellini experiment failed even more spectacularly than most had predicted, with Spurs in danger of plunging out of the European places completely following their 6-1 thrashing at St James’ Park.

Tottenham were humiliated by Newcastle on SundayCredit: Getty
Two years ago, when Spurs were last in this position — winding down a poor season with Mason in charge — it took them 72 days before they stumbled upon Nuno Espirito Santo.
Then, as now, Julian Nagelsmann was the initial favourite, before he became one of several men to snub the job.
Nagelsmann’s own dalliance with Chelsea appears to have broken down mutually, leaving that door open for Pochettino.
Spurs haven’t had a boss with any true sense of permanence since Poch.
And as a result nobody has been able to act upon the obvious fact that their goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris, 36, has been past his best for some time.
That particular chicken came home to roost when a shellshocked Lloris was withdrawn at half-time on Tyneside, claiming a hip injury when a diagnosis of wounded pride seemed more likely.
Either club could have appointed Pochettino to shovel up their sewage. Tottenham weren’t interested and the Blues clearly are.Dave Kidd
Stellini opted for a back four against Newcastle, then decided his decision “might not have been right” when he reverted to a defensive five midway through the first half with his side five-down.
It was possibly the most glaring example in footballing history of shutting the stable door after the horse had bolted.
Until Levy trumped it on Monday by sacking Stellini while branding the performance at Newcastle “wholly unacceptable” and “devastating”.
Stellini, a convicted match-fixer, had one previous managerial job in the Italian third tier, which ended with him being axed after three wins in 16 games. So this isn’t a case of 20-20 hindsight.
Whoever takes charge of Spurs next season — and Brendan Rodgers would be an excellent choice, if an unpopular one with a largely-delusional Spurs support base — it will not be Poch.
Brendan Rodgers is out of working after being sacked by LeicesterCredit: Getty Images – Getty
When he left Spurs, the fear was he might end up at Arsenal, who were about to sack Unai Emery.
Instead it looks like Chelsea, whose increasingly-bitter rivalry with Spurs has made fixtures between the clubs as heated as North London derbies.
It is not as if Pochettino will be entering any less of a madhouse at Stamford Bridge. But he’ll have better players, and a bigger budget, at Todd Boehly’s comedy club.
And the 51-year-old will not be too bothered about inheriting an unbalanced and bloated squad.
This is a bloke who had Kylian Mbappe and Neymar at Paris Saint-Germain and was then told he was getting Lionel Messi, despite advising his bosses that he did not need the little maestro.
After that exercise in ego management, dealing with the likes of Enzo Fernandez and Mykhailo Mudryk should be plain sailing.
Whoever takes charge of Spurs next season — and Brendan Rodgers would be an excellent choice, if an unpopular one with a largely-delusional Spurs support base — it will not be Poch.Dave Kidd
For all the shambles of Boehly’s first nine months, Chelsea could still compete next term, under an excellent workaholic coach in Pochettino.
That’s provided they sign a world-class centre-forward and sell several players to comply with Financial Fair Play and give them enough space to fit everybody inside the dressing room!
Should Poch make a decent fist of it, and his record suggests he might, anger towards Levy will only grow.
The chairman gave a rare public address recently to the Cambridge Union, in which he told some of the nation’s finest young minds that Spurs are “the greatest club in the world”.

And this is the danger with over-estimating your own intelligence and always believing you are the smartest man in the room.
You end up sounding foolish, you end up 5-0 down after 21 minutes, and you end up allowing the best thing that ever happened to you to fall into the arms of a sworn enemy.

Man Utd ready to offer Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford HUGE salaries to fire title bid… paid from David de Gea wage cut

MANCHESTER UNITED want to make Marcus Rashford and Harry Kane a mouth-watering £600,000-a-week strike partnership to win back the title. That is the Old Trafford hierarchy’s aim as they bid to take advantage of Tottenham’s demise and land their No 1 target.

Keeper David de Gea is United’s highest earner on £375,000 a week but the 32-year-old, out of contract this summer, will drop his wages after receiving a new £200,000 offer.
Star striker Rashford, 25, has just over 12 months left on his deal and the Red Devils are fighting to tie him down to fresh terms, increasing his wages from £200,000 to £300,000 a week.
Tottenham and England record scorer Kane earns £200,000 a week but United will increase his pay packet by £100,000.
Three Lions captain Kane, who turns 30 in July, also has bonuses for goals scored and honours achieved — the same as Rashford.

As revealed last month by SunSport, United, who have not won the title since 2013, were confident of signing Kane this summer if Spurs finished outside the Champions League places.
After their 6-1 capitulation to Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday, a top-four finish looks increasingly unlikely.
Spurs are six points behind United ahead of Thursday’s home clash with Erik ten Hag’s FA Cup finalists.
If the Red Devils win, then the £100million asking price for Kane will dramatically reduce as the striker enters the final 12 months of his contract and heading towards the latter end of his career.
