Tony Adams: Arteta is ‘Pep Lite’… but the Arsenal boss needs a Plan B against Man City or title bid is OVER

WHEN I interviewed Martin Odegaard for TV on Monday, he asked me what advice I’d give to Arsenal for Wednesday’s game at Manchester City.My answer was two words: “Don’t lose.”

If Arsenal can do that, the title race is still open.
    If not, it’s all over.
I’d love nothing more than to see a boring 0-0 draw but I can guarantee that’s not going to happen because Arsenal only know one way to play — and that’s s**t or bust.
George Graham would call it gung-ho football and would absolutely hate this stuff.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
It’s so exciting for the neutrals but Arsenal fans like me are watching every game from behind the sofa.
Every time Arsenal have won league titles, it’s been when they’ve got the right balance between defence and attack. This current team doesn’t have that balance.
Mikel Arteta never sends them out to keep a clean sheet — it’s very Arsene Wenger and I don’t think that will ever change with him.
I don’t think he has a Plan B, so on Wednesday night they’ll go to the Etihad and try to outplay the best team in Europe and probably not be good enough.

Mikel has modelled everything on what his mate Pep Guardiola has done and, as a result, Arsenal are City Lite.
But you can’t win the title by copying a better version because Pep has more resources in his arsenal than Arsenal.
The depth of City’s squad is scary. They played their B team in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday and still won 3-0.
And every time they make changes, their squad players come in and deliver. But Arsenal have been relying on the same core of players every week and you can’t expect them to keep delivering.
Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Thomas Partey have been incredible all season — but when Arsenal played a couple of their B team against Sporting Lisbon in the Europa League, they got turned over.
So unless Arsenal are going to outspend Man City in the transfer market, they have to try something different.
When we went to Liverpool needing a last-day win to be champions in 1989, we played with five at the back, two holding midfield players and made keeping a clean sheet our absolute priority.
And it worked. We won 2-0 and the rest is history.
But that’s the kind of stuff which Arteta will never do, so this is a game which could finish up 3-2 or 4-3 either way.
City aren’t invincible. They were ripped apart down their left flank by Bayern Munich last week and even Tottenham took them to the cleaners a couple of months ago.
But they’ve got loads of Premier League-winning experience, while Arsenal only have Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko, neither of whom were at the heart of City’s team before their Emirates move.
So now there’s a nervousness which crept into Arsenal’s game in Friday’s 3-3 draw with struggling Southampton.
At 2-0 down, Zinchenko calls all the players into a huddle. What was that all about?
If you’ve got something to say, you do it in the dressing room before the game, not in the middle of the match. That’s just for show.
And I hate it when I see the manager and the players waving their arms about trying to get the crowd going.
You do that by doing your job, chasing lost causes, clearing up, not making mistakes, and being defensively solid.
Arsenal just need to go back to basics — but they have no basics to go back to. They score a lot of goals but they also concede a lot.
There’s no one going, ‘Oi, what are you doing, stay here? Do not move, Ramsdale, don’t do that, stick it up the pitch’.
A third of all goals come from set-plays and we saw Arsenal concede from another corner last Friday.
I’ve no idea what the set-piece coach is supposed to be doing because it should be down to the players to take responsibility and sort it out, not someone pointing from the touchline.
All of which brings us to Erling Haaland — and obviously I’m worried about Arsenal being without William Saliba.
Haaland is a real throwback to a bygone age but, like Alan Shearer and Michael Owen, he’s a guy who gets on the end of the stuff but doesn’t create chances.
I’m more worried about Kevin De Bruyne, Jack Grealish, Bernardo Silva and Riyad Mahrez because they’re the guys who dictate possession.
I can see the two centre-backs having a real battle with Haaland on Wednesday night and Rob Holding will relish that.
But City will have the majority of possession and create chances, so Haaland will get away at least once and, if he does, he’ll probably score.
I would have loved to play against him. He’d be just my cup of tea because it would have been so easy for me.
I’d relish that battle, like I did with Shearer. When you’re up against a striker like that, you get them working off the ball so they’re knackered when they get possession.
The best tackle in the world is anticipation and interception. I would make sure that I got the ball before he even touched it.
The only player I ever had to stick really close to was Duncan Ferguson, because if I gave him a run and a jump his leap was incredible.
It was a bit like being a sumo wrestler. The smaller guy has to use the weight of his opponent against him.
So I would get right into Duncan’s belly and make sure he couldn’t jump. It wasn’t about me clearing the ball away, it was making sure he couldn’t get his head to it.
If you get into a physical fight with Haaland, you’re probably going to lose.
So if the ball is coming up to him or it’s crossed to him at the near post, you get in front of him at all times.
And if you’re in doubt, you just whack him up in the air.

But you only do that on the halfway line in the 95th minute when you’re 2-0 up. You definitely don’t do it anywhere near your own area.
Let’s just hope Arsenal are in that comfortable position on Wednesday night. More

Arsenal 1 West Ham 5: Watch wonderkid Kodua score 35-yard chip as Wilshere’s boys suffer FA Youth Cup final heartbreak

THE Boleyn babies of 1999 have finally been emulated – and in some style thanks to Gideon Kodua’s 35-yard stunner. It was 24 years ago that the likes of Joe Cole and Michael Carrick led West Ham’s youngsters to the FA Youth Cup with a 9-0 victory against Coventry City over two legs.

West Ham turned on the style with five goals at the EmiratesCredit: Getty
That was their third youth cup triumph, adding to the glory years of 1963 and 1981.
Now, after an historic evening at the Emirates, the class of 2023 have made it four – stuffing Jack Wilshere’s young Guns in their own North London backyard.
New names will be etched into the history books, such as goal scorers George Earthy, Callum Marshall, skipper Kodua, Kaelan Casey and Josh Briggs.
Divin Mubama and Oliver Scarles – who have already tasted first team football under David Moyes this season – also shone brightly.

The 7,000 raucous travelling West Ham fans – who treated this like an FA Cup final proper – will be hoping at least one of those could be the new Cole or Carrick.
It has been so long since the club’s faithful supporters have had a Golden Generation of East London graduates to idolise. Maybe this is the start of something.
The FA Youth Cup is often the breeding ground for future stars on the big stage, from Manchester City’s Jadon Sancho in 2017 to Everton’s Wayne Rooney in 2002.
But as former academy boy, club legend and now sporting director Mark Noble said before kick-off, whatever happens from now, these lads will be remembered forever.

Current captain Declan Rice watched on from the stands. He may be leaving in the summer to play in this very stadium, but as a fellow Hammers alumni, he will have been proud.
Now, it is down to him and his senior teammates to go one better and lift a trophy of their own in the Europa Conference League ahead of next month’s semi-final against AZ Alkmaar.
Coming from behind after Omari Benjamin’s stunner in the seventh minute for the hosts, Kevin Keen’s West Ham never looked back.
Gunners coach Wilshere knows all about that winning feeling in this competition, lifting the trophy in 2009 before going on to become one of the club’s best players.
As a young coach, 31, he has now tasted defeat, but under his guise the development of Reuell Walters, Amario Cozier-Duberry, Myles Lewis-Skelly and 16-year-old Ethan Nwaneri – who made his Prem debut at Brentford in September – is promising.
In front of a 34,000 crowd, Arsenal started the better side with Benjamin curling a first-time beauty into the top corner.
Yet West Ham responded emphatically. Earthy and Marshall scored one each in the 17th and 19th minute before Kodua then hit a stunning chip from 35 yards out.
As Arsenal tired, West Ham added the cherry on the cake from corners via Casey and Briggs.

Arsenal coach Jack Wilshere said: “It’s difficult at the moment to analyse the run. The boys have been exceptional. Big lessons tonight and important they take them but they should be proud.
“They have given me and the staff some unbelievable memories and when they happen you have to appreciate them. The boys are on the floor in the dressing room but they have to learn from that.
“My overriding feeling is devastation, for myself and the boys. You lose a final 5-1 at home it looks bad and it can affect you. It looks like a disaster. We had moments, but we didn’t manage it.
“These boys are on a good pathway and we will continue supporting them. It is not a make-or-break night. You measure development over time not on one night. It is down to them.”
West Ham coach Kevin Keen said: “This is my 40th season in football and it is as proud as I have ever been. To come here and have that support behind us, it is an incredible moment for the academy and the club.
“After such a long time for a club associated with its academy, it is a massive moment. In the past there was a lot of pressure attached to being the Academy of Football, but hopefully we have dispelled that.
“Mark Noble and Declan Rice were on the side of the pitch. Hopefully we have a few here who will have careers at this club.

“I’d take this group above everyone for the rest of my life.
“They were going nuts in the dressing room, but they won’t be going out for any beers, not even me.”

A stunning 6-1 victory over Tottenham on Sunday moved the Magpies up to third place in the Premier League table.
And failing a late collapse, they will be in the Champions League next season.
According to Croatian outlet Sportske Novosti, Newcastle are eyeing up Brozovic as a potential transfer at the end of the season.
It is understood his arrival would free up Bruno Guimaraes to move into a more attacking role.

Barcelona are also interested in the Croatian international – who has 85 caps for his country.

I captained Man Utd ahead of Pogba and Lingard to win FA Youth Cup then quit football for five years – now I’m back

THE captain of Manchester United’s famous 2011 youth team, Tom Thorpe, has opened up about his struggles after returning to football.Centre-back Thorpe, 30, led the likes of Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Michael Keane and Ravel Morrison to several trophies including the reserve league, U18s title and FA Youth Cup.

But after just one substitute appearance for the first team in 2014, he left United the following year amid injury problems.
Spells with Rotherham, Bradford and Bolton followed, before he jetted off to India to play for ATK.
Thorpe then hung up his boots in 2018.
Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “Looking back, it was a case of me wanting to just get away from it all [moving to India].

“My enjoyment in football had just gone completely and India was an excuse to escape that.”
Thorpe also opened up about the mental health struggles he endured as a result of his injury issues.
He added: “That was major catalyst for me going under and into a really dark place.
“It wasn’t a pleasant experience and it’s something that had a huge impact not only on my life but on my parents as well. I don’t know what I would have done or where I would be if it wasn’t for them.

“Even living in the same house, there were days when I wouldn’t want to speak a word to them. I just felt empty.”
Now Thorpe is back in football having signed for Macclesfield in February – where he has played four times.
But he insists it was not always his plan to return to the game.
He said: “Initially it was a case of ‘I don’t want to play again’. I was done and I was more than happy to just walk away. There was never a time period of seeing how I feel to get better. There was no aim of getting back into football.
“But there was the stress of: ‘If I’m not going to play football, what else am I going to do?’ That in itself was enough to fill me with anxiety. I was fortunate that somebody from Macclesfield contacted me and things went from there joining them.
“I’ll play football as long as I enjoy it. If that stops, then it’s not something that I want to continue doing. I’m not putting any pressure on myself as to where I aspire to go to.
“It was my enjoyment at Macclesfield FC that made me want to start playing again. I’m relaxed and I’m happy there.
“When I previously played, I cared too much about what the wrong people thought. I’ve come to realise your mental health is much more important than anything else.”

Man Utd promote 18-year-old ‘massive talent’ to first-team ahead of Tottenham clash amid defensive injury crisis

But he has already impressed enough to force Erik ten Hag into having a closer look at him.
Kambwala arrived at Old Trafford from Sochaux for £3.5million in September 2020.
And he has entered the fray at a time when Man Utd are stretched at centre-back.
Lisandro Martinez and Raphael Varane are both sidelined with injuries.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof did little to make a case for themselves in the 3-0 loss to Sevilla on Thursday evening.
And Luke Shaw deputising at centre-half is not an ideal alternative for Ten Hag.
With a clash against Tottenham on Thursday, United could all but secure a place in the top four with a win.
And that may allow Ten Hag to experiment with some youngsters in their subsequent Premier League games – before they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

But United fans are not concerned if the inexperienced Kambwala is to be thrown in at the deep end.

Another added: “Just seen YouTube highlights of him, very much an Erik ten Hag player. Wants the ball at feet and passes out from the back…”
And a third replied: “Erik ten Hag slowly integrating these young stars. Hopefully we see some debuts before the end of the season.” More

Anything other than an Arsenal win at the Etihad will see Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions remain favourites to win the title yet again.
But Gooners online reckon they’ve spotted something that may give them an edge.
Michael Oliver has been appointed as referee for the match.
The 38-year-old has officiated Arsenal four times this season… with Mikel Arteta’s side winning every time.

Oliver took charge of the Gunners’ 3-2 triumph over Liverpool in October and their 1-0 win at Chelsea in November.
He was also in charge for the 3-1 victory over West Ham at the Emirates in their first game back after the World Cup in December.
While most recently he oversaw their 4-0 win over Everton on March 1.
Spotting the pattern, one Arsenal fan wrote: “He’s a top referee.”

Despite their record with him in the middle this season, the omen may not favour Arsenal as much as they think.
As it turns out, they have lost 16 times with Oliver as referee since his Prem debut in 2010.
Only West Ham, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa have lost more Prem games officiated by Oliver.
Manchester City have twice been officiated by Oliver this season.

Chelsea to hold talks with Romelu Lukaku with Mauricio Pochettino likely to offer striker club lifeline

MAURICIO POCHETTINO is set to offer Romelu Lukaku a Chelsea lifeline, according to reports. The Argentine, 51, looks on course to be Graham Potter’s permanent replacement at Stamford Bridge and could even be appointed this week.

The ex-Tottenham and PSG boss has held talks with the West Londoners with negotiations progressing well.
And one of the key issues will be what to do with Lukaku.
The Belgian striker, 29, rejoined Chelsea for £97million in 2021 but fell out with former boss Thomas Tuchel, prompting him to be shipped out to Inter Milan for this season.
However, a combination of injury and poor form means the Italians are unsure whether they will explore another loan or even buying Lukaku back.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
And now The Telegraph state Chelsea are planning talks with the forward.
It is understood they will sit down to discuss the player’s options and a return to the Blues first team has not been ruled out yet.
That is despite Lukaku allegedly preferring to stay at the San Siro after a difficult first season back at Stamford Bridge, in which he scored eight Premier League goals.
Chelsea know they need to trim down the bloated squad when the transfer market reopens after spending more than £600m on new recruits this season.

Ironically, though, a No9 is still needed – but Pochettino may relish the chance to work with Lukaku.
Armando Broja should also be back in contention for the new season as he recovers from ACL knee surgery.
Poch helped transform Harry Kane from a fringe man into a record-breaking goal machine – and Chelsea will no doubt be hoping he can work similar wonders with their current attackers.
As revealed by SunSport, the free agent manager is confident he can transform the fortunes of the struggling side languishing 11th in the Premier League table despite dozens of international players.
He will try and bring long-serving assistants Jesus Perez, Toni Jiminez plus sports scientist son Sebastiano with him to Stamford Bridge if he becomes the fifth manager in the chaotic Todd Boehly regime – although Frank Lampard is expected to stay on as interim boss for the time being.
Pochettino, Luis Enrique and Julian Nagelsmann – all currently without a job – have been interviewed for the job, but ex-Bayern Munich chief Nagelsmann is understood to have ruled himself out. More

Inside Tottenham’s make-or-break summer including manager hunt, Harry Kane’s future and transfer overhaul

DANIEL LEVY is facing the biggest crisis of his 22-year tenure as Tottenham chairman. After five years of one disastrous decision after another, Levy watched on at St James’ Park as his side were humiliated 6-1 by Newcastle over the weekend.

Levy promptly responded by holding a crisis meeting with his senior Player Committee on Monday morning, with acting head coach Cristian Stellini sacked just hours later.
After Fabio Paratici’s resignation last week following his worldwide football ban, Levy finds himself with no manager, no managing football director and virtually no hope of securing a top four spot.
To compound the situation, fans’ favourite Mauricio Pochettino is on the verge of joining Chelsea, after Spurs stubbornly stuck to the staggering decision not to call on the most successful manager of the ENIC era for a second stint.
With fan protests growing against the current ownership, SunSport examines the steps that will have to be made by the under-fire Spurs board as they somehow attempt to navigate this period of uncertainty in the coming months.

    NEW MANAGER SEARCH
With Stellini out the door, Ryan Mason will again step into the breach as caretaker boss, having done so following Jose Mourinho’s exit in 2021.
Mason’s popularity with fans and players alike may buy the Spurs board time, but not much.
Supporters had chanted for Pochettino at recent home games, but that ship appears to have sailed.
The man that may appease fans most is Julian Nagelsmann, who pulled out of the race to become Chelsea boss last Friday.

Nagelsmann is reportedly warming to the idea of joining Spurs, but only on his terms.
The 35-year-old would want a major say in transfers if he were to hop aboard a new project in North London, while he would only be willing to start at the end of the season.
Should Tottenham fail to get a deal done with the ex-Bayern Munich boss, the vast majority of fans would like to see a similarly young, ambitious coach with a reputation for progressive, front foot football signed up.
Spurs’ dalliances with win-at-all-costs managers in the shape of Mourinho and Antonio Conte have failed miserably – it’s time for the Lilywhites to get back to what made them so good under Pochettino.

    REPLACING PARATICI
Levy had expected Fabio Paratici to play a major role in the appointment of Spurs’ next manager.
But with the Italian now departed, the 61-year-old has yet another role to fill – and a crucial one at that.
Former Bolton right-back Gretar Steinsson was appointed as performance director under Paratici last summer and is thought to be fulfilling a number of his former boss’ duties.
But Tottenham are believed to be looking to replace Paratici with an external candidate in the coming months.
They have already appointed Scott Munn as chief football officer, with the former City Football Group exec set to begin on July 1 – and Paratici’s replacement set to report to him.
Levy now faces a delicate balancing act appointing both a manager and managing football director whose visions will align – with doubts that he will be able to achieve it.

    SQUAD OVERHAUL
There’s no sugarcoating what a shambles Tottenham were on Sunday. There was no cohesion, no quality and seemingly very little effort on display at St James’ Park.
But despite how they appeared against Newcastle, and have done for much of this season, this Spurs squad is not all bad.
Even aside from established stars Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, the North Londoners possess an intriguing younger core including the likes of Cristian Romero, Yves Bissouma and Dejan Kulusevski – players whose potentials Spurs seem to have only scratched the surface of.
Among those rough diamonds worth sticking with, however, are many players who would probably be best served moving on, both for their own sake and the club’s.
Moving on a large number of players in one window is a tall order and probably unrealistic.
But it’s probable that the likes of Hugo Lloris, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Davinson Sanchez, Ivan Perisic, Eric Dier, Ryan Sessegnon, Japhet Tanganga and Emerson Royal could all do with exiting, should Spurs find the right deal.
Exactly who stays and who goes will surely depend on who Tottenham select as their new manager and managing director of football – and the system they opt to deploy next term.
But it appears certain that Spurs will have to begin by prioritising their leaky back-line which still still regularly features Dier, Sanchez and Ben Davies – players that were back-ups five years ago.

    HARRY KANE DECISION
Last time Kane tried to leave Spurs the club found itself in a strong position, with the forward having had three years remaining on his contract.
This summer, his deal will have only one year left.
SunSport revealed last month that Manchester United had made contact with Kane’s camp via intermediaries, and had been encouraged by the exchange.
The Red Devils feel that Spurs will lower their £100million asking price if and when they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
If Tottenham can’t convince Kane to sign a new contract, they will find themselves at an uncomfortable crossroad.
They can either let his deal run into its final year, and risk letting him leave for free to whomever he chooses in a bid to spend as long as possible trying to convince him to stay.
Or they can finally pull the plug, letting Kane go and focusing on how to move forward without their all-time leading goalscorer.
Should they plump for the latter, no new signing would be able to replace Kane on his own.
The only way to match his impact would be by committee – finding a new system and approach that can make it easier for whoever they field up top than Kane has had it in recent seasons.

    RETURNING LOAN PLAYERS
Tottenham currently have 11 players out on loan, with only Destiny Udogie among them having not played for the first team before.
Those out on loan cost Spurs north of £200m, and feature expensive flops such as Tanguy Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso, who they have previously largely written off but struggled to sell.
With Ndombele, Lo Celso and Udogie, as well as Sergio Reguilon, Djed Spence, Harry Winks, Bryan Gil and Joe Rodon – in addition to youngsters Harvey White, Troy Parrott and Dane Scarlett – set to return, Spurs’ new boss will have to assess which previously discarded players he may be able to get a tune out of.
If Tottenham’s next manager thinks they can utilise even just two of these players, it could save the club a fortune in replacing them.

While it would also allow them to focus their budget on different areas, with the defence in particular in need of an overhaul.
It’s already been confirmed that Spurs will play West Ham in Perth in July, and it will be fascinating to see which outcasts will be given an opportunity to impress during pre-season.
