But now Ratcliffe is ready to make an offer likely to infuriate United fans who are desperate to get rid of their owners of 18 years.
And that could see some fans shifting their support to Qatari banker Sheikh Jasin bin Hamad al-Thani, who still plans to make a bid for a £5.5bn-plus deal when he makes his third offer on Friday.
Sir Jim’s potential gambit would see him still take a controlling stake of more than 50 per cent of the club but allow co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to retain their combined 20 per cent stake.
Such a deal would be likely to cause consternation from the majority of United supporters, who have made their anger and frustration towards the Glazers abundantly clear.

But it may prove to be the preferred option for the duo, whose desire to remain at the club appears to have grown in recent months.
Sheikh Jassim still intends to bid for full control of the club, while four hedge funds, including Elliott Management and the Carlyle group, will make offer of cash injections to fund future development.
However the new Ratcliffe move could prove a game-changer, even if the prospect of a continued Glazer involvement does bring a backlash from supporters.
Earlier this month, Gary Neville raged at reports that American financial group Carlyle could be set to make a major investment in Man Utd.

The US based private equity firm is reportedly pitching to take a minority stake in the club.
United legend Neville, who has been vocal about the Glazers, was not happy with the news and vented his frustration on Twitter alongside a picture of the firm’s mission statement.
He said: “No thank you! This doesn’t work for United! The Glazer PR machine keeps leaking this type of minority partnership out there bi-weekly whilst stressing it’s a confidential process. Full Sale Only.” More

Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand shuts down Martin Keown with brutal Arsenal jibe live on BT Sport

RIO FERDINAND shut down Martin Keown with a brutal response about Arsenal’s development. The former Premier League defenders were part of BT Sport’s punditry team at the Etihad ahead of Manchester City’s crunching 4-1 win in the top-of-the-table clash.

The Gunners headed to Manchester City five points clear at the top but having played two more matches in this thrilling Premier League title race.
Patrick Vieira was talking up Arsenal and their chances of lifting the trophy – either this season or next.
Keown then chipped in by claiming his former side can now be classed as “winners”.
The ex-centre back said: “The manager has reinforced the old culture we used to have, a winning culture.

“These guys are winners now, things have changed.
“People come to work to be the best.”
But Ferdinand immediately retorted: “How are they winners now?
    “They’ve not won nothing.”

That left Keown on the back foot and scrambling for a comeback.
    He replied: “No, no…”
And then Keown added: “Look at the number of games they have won.
“The reputation of these players has changed enormously, they were a soft touch, the players weren’t physical enough.
“If you play Arsenal now, you’re in a game.
“The culture has changed. They’ve come a long way.”
Ferdinand totally agreed that Mikel Arteta has helped transform Arsenal since taking over at the Emirates in December 2019.
But the FA Cup win that season is the only silverware to show for it just yet.
And the ex-Manchester United man is reluctant to overstate the success.
Ferdinand added: “I wouldn’t be going up against them saying they’re winners.
“The culture is changing and Arteta has done remarkably well.
“But to say they are a winning team is a stretch too far right now.
“They have a great opportunity this season. City are the team to beat.”

Earlier on in the programme’s build-up, Keown left fans at home slamming him for the “cringiest moment of the season”.

Lampard has lost all four of his matches back at the helm since returning to Stamford Bridge as caretaker boss.
The Blues lost both legs of their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid.
While they were also defeated 1-0 at Wolves and 2-1 by Brighton at the Bridge.
Chelsea’s unusual starting XI shouldn’t come as a surprise to Blues fans as Lampard hinted that he’d ring the changes in Tuesday’s pre-match press conference at Cobham.
The club legend said: “If they deserve it, for sure. There’s the individual work of showing that you deserve it and I’m fully for that.
“In my first period at the club I came in with a transfer ban and losing big players and everyone said of course the young players would get in the team.

“They got in the team because of how they trained and those things and that’s a culture you need at a football club and not something that should change just for the moment.
“Every day in training is an opportunity now to try and show you deserve to be in the team I’ve shown as a coach, if you do that you’ll always get an opportunity with me.”

Jonjo Shelvey OUT of Nottingham Forest squad vs Brighton after being banished from training following row with Cooper

JONJO SHELVEY has been AXED from Nottingham Forest’s squad for their clash against Brighton this evening. The midfielder, 31, was sent home by manager Steve Cooper at the weekend after reacting angrily to being named on the bench for the 3-2 loss to Liverpool.

He was subsequently banished from training.
And now he has been omitted from The Tricky Trees’ squad altogether as they prepare to welcome Brighton to the City Ground.
Forest head into the game two points adrift of safety following a dreadful run of form.
Cooper’s men have not won any of their last 11 Premier League games – a run that stretches back to the beginning of February.

And it looks as though they are going to have to fight relegation without Shelvey for the time being.
SunSport has been told the ex-Liverpool man “threw his toys out of the pram,” and confronted Cooper following a team meeting, after learning he had been relegated to the bench for the second match on the spin.
Shelvey’s anger flared when he realised he would not be starting against his former Anfield team-mates and his negative attitude surfaced on the training pitch.
With Forest’s season on the line, Cooper decided he could not carry anyone who was not 100 per cent focused on the task in hand and axed him from his squad for the trip to Merseyside.

It is understood, although popular with many of his team-mates, the majority of Forest’s players sympathised with Cooper’s call to remove Shelvey from his squad in the interests of team unity.
Shelvey still has two years of his contract to run after he was signed from Newcastle United for a nominal fee in January.
But the combative midfielder has only made eight appearances for his new club.
He lost his place earlier this month after his blunder gifted Aston Villa their opening goal as Forest lost 2-0 at Villa Park. More

AC Milan ‘offered Arsenal star on free transfer’ with no new Emirates contract agreed yet

And the club are yet to reach an agreement when it comes to a new deal despite reports he would “love” to stay.
According to Football Italia, AC Milan are interested in acquiring him if he becomes a free agent.
The Italian giants are prioritising the signing of a striker in the summer window as they look to replace Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Divock Origi.
But with the futures of trio Ante Rebic, Charles De Ketelaere and Rafael Leao all uncertain, a wide forward is also being targeted.

And Nelson could fit the mould as he has shown flashes of brilliance this season, despite limited game time.
He has made six substitute appearances in the Premier League – but not managed a single start.
Nelson’s standout moment in the 2022/23 campaign came when he struck a sensational last-minute winner against Bournemouth last month.
However, he has been a bit-part player due to the form of Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka.

And Leandro Trossard’s arrival in January pushed him even further down the pecking order.
All in all, Nelson has contributed seven goals and seven assists in 61 games for Arsenal.
But he has shown promise during loan spells with Feyenoord and Hoffenheim.
And AC Milan could obtain his services if Arsenal fail to tie Nelson down to a new contract.
The seven-time European champions sit fourth in Serie A as they fight for a Champions League place.
But they could still qualify for Europe’s elite competition even if they miss out on the top four.
That is because they are in with a chance of winning it this year as they prepare for a mouthwatering semi-final clash against bitter rivals Inter Milan. More
