Tottenham 2 Man Utd 2: Porro and Son complete incredible second-half comeback as they bounce back from Newcastle mauling

A DISASTROUS situation at Tottenham, which seemed to be getting worse by the minute, was summed up seconds after Marcus Rashford hammered in United’s second goal. The TV cameras immediately focused on a stone-faced Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy who could have been advised to have worn earplugs due to the amount of stick he was receiving from the stands.

Yet sat behind Levy as United celebrated a second, Spurs club executive director Donna Cullen appeared to mouth the word “s***”.
No one could really argue with that. Tottenham, having been humiliated 6-1 by Newcastle, seemed to be cruising for another bruising after Rashford added to Jadon Sancho’s seventh-minute opener.
But under their latest interim manager, 31-year-old Ryan Mason, Tottenham surprised everyone.
The complete lack of passion and organisation under Cristian Stellini was replaced by some fight and a bit of quality.

Pedro Porro pulled one back and Son Heung-min, after wasting one chance, grabbed an equaliser that Spurs certainly deserved.
And what threatened to be a properly unpleasant evening ended with Tottenham’s fans at least getting behind their team and forgetting about Levy, albeit for another day.
Weirdly, Mason is now the third English interim manager in London but this result was somewhere between Roy Hodgson and Frank Lampard. Although not brilliant, not terrible.
And for much of this curious evening, it was a contest to decide which set of fans hated their board the most although in the cold light of day, United will always win this one.

And when United’s fans got tired of spending their energy on the Americans, they turned to a subject which could be a knife through the heart of everyone who loves Tottenham. The United fans sang: “Harry Kane, we’ll see you in June.”
Kane’s former team-mate Christian Eriksen, who was given a warm reception on his return to White Hart Lane, now has an FA Cup final to look forward to.
And while Erik ten Hag’s side strengthened their Champions League spot, Tottenham are now holding on for seventh and a place in the Europa Conference.
And to think at the start of the season, they had a genuine belief that under Antonio Conte, this, maybe, could have been their season.
Mason had wanted more energy and quality in the team’s play. Considering the catastrophe which unfolded at St James’ Park four days earlier, it was vital Spurs were solid early without making silly mistakes or rash tackles.
Unfortunately, Oliver Skipp did not see the memo. He delivered a mistimed tackle that allowed Rashford to surge forward and feed Sancho.

He still had work to do but cut inside Porro and then shot around Cristian Romero into the corner.
More weak tackling and poor defensive organisation allowed Sancho another couple of chances but his first shot was blocked by Romero who then got a touch onto the rebound which was headed off the line by Perisic.
After being crushed by Sevilla, United were largely unconvincing against Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals but this was much better until they faded in the second half.
Bruno Fernandes’ wife decided to announce some potential team news on Monday by posting a picture of the midfield sitting on a sofa with his right leg elevated on a stack of three cushions.
His ankle was strapped up while there was a protective boot and a pair of crutches on the floor nearby.
Yet Ten Hag was optimistic about Fernandes’ chances of making the game and indeed, he wore the captain’s armband tonight and was at the centre of everything in those opening 45 minutes.

Yet Spurs had a few bright moments but were just sloppy. Richarlison should have been greedy and shot on goal rather than attempt to square for Porro while De Gea did make a couple of decent stops from Perisic.
And it was moments after the second save from De Gea, when Perisic elected to keep the ball in play rather than take a corner, that United changed up the other end and got the second.
Fernandes played a diagonal pass to Rashford and he was given a ridiculous amount of time and space to carry the ball into the area before thumping it past Fraser Forster.
At least Spurs came out firing in the second half and Porro gave them hope courtesy of a fine finish with the outside of his boot after Kane’s shot had been blocked by Shaw.
United somehow failed to score immediately after Fernandes ran through the defence and belted a shot against the bar.
Son delivered a terrible finish after some brilliant work from Kane and Dier missed a sitter.
And with 11 minutes left, Kane again delivered a deadly ball across the face of the goal and this time, the South Korean could not miss.

So at least Spurs players left the pitch in good spirits although their level of improvement under Mason will properly be tested on Sunday, away to Liverpool.

Marcus Tavernier scored the winner for Bournemouth five minutes after the break – with VAR ruling out a late Che Adams equaliser for offside.
Lyanco came on for Ward-Prowse as Southampton struggled to impose themselves.
And some worried Saints fans reckoned JWP had looked “out of sorts” from the start.
The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell tweeted: “James Ward-Prowse was ill before the game, hence his substitution at half time.”

One observer responded: “Why start him then. More mismanagement.”
And another one joked: “Sick of being part of this squad, presumably.”
Defeat left Southampton seemingly doomed to the drop.

That possible difference was reflected by each side’s performance.
The Saints, and their fans, appeared to lack belief.
The Cherries, meanwhile, showed composure and fluency.
However, there was a blow for Bournemouth as they lost their in-form scorer Tavernier late on.
The 24-year-old midfielder limped off, looking gutted.
And Adams – on for Theo Walcott – saw a leveller erased for a marginal decision. More

But as the gutted left-back limped off gingerly and was replaced by Ainsley Maitland-Niles, manager Ruben Selles took advantage of the stoppage in play.
The Southampton boss jotted down some notes on a piece of paper – possibly a change of shape following the enforced substitution – and veteran forward Walcott was tasked with sharing the information to his team-mates.
The ex-Arsenal man, 34, headed across to the likes of Carlos Alcaraz, Adam Armstrong, Mohamed Elyounoussi and Jan Bednarek showing them the handwritten slip.
And that prompted plenty of witty comments from fans watching on at home.

The relegation clash was 0-0 at the time with Saints knowing a third home win of the season would pull them right back into contention of staying up.

Kane, 29, is out of contract at the end of next season and has been linked with a move to United.
And Red Devils fans are seemingly confident of securing a move for the England skipper.
The travelling supporters aimed the cheeky chant at Kane during Thursday’s clash between United and Spurs in North London.
A recent report in The Telegraph claimed it is becoming increasingly likely that Kane will not sign a new contract with Tottenham.

Why are Tottenham wearing a new sponsor on their shirt against Man Utd?

TOTTENHAM are taking on Manchester United tonight in the Premier League – and fans have spotted something different about their shirts. Spurs need a big win tonight if they’re to keep up in their battle for the top four in the league.

They were thrashed 6-1 by Newcastle at the weekend, however, and rumours are swirling over Harry Kane’s future.
United would also like a win to go back above Newcastle and into third, but will have it tough this evening.
Spurs will be hoping their brand new shirts will give them the luck they need for tonight’s game.
Why are Tottenham wearing a new sponsor?
Tottenham are usually sponsored by AIA, a worldwide insurance company.
And while the AIA logo has remained on their shirt tonight, there’s something just a little different about it.
“Our players will wear special edition charity shirts for tonight’s match against Manchester United, raising awareness and funds for an initiative supporting the education of children in rural China,” Tottenham tweeted before the game.
A win for Spurs tonight would push them closer to the top four, but Newcastle have a game in hand over them and are already six points clear with a handful of games to go.
Christian Stellini was sacked earlier this week following the Newcastle defeat.

Caretaker boss Ryan Mason hopes Spurs’ fortunes will change tonight.
“We’ve got six games to try and have a positive little run, but I believe in this group and I believe in this football club as well,” he said.
“I’ve been in in football long enough to know how things can change quickly and a result can change a lot. Hopefully we can transmit that to the pitch.” More

Chelsea set to keep Joao Felix next season despite refusing to pay transfer fee as Pochettino eyes Lukaku partnership

JOAO FELIX looks set to stay at Chelsea for another year even though the club will not be playing in the Champions League. The Portuguese forward had stressed that qualification for the world’s best club competition would influence his decision on whether to remain in England or go back to Atletico Madrid.

But the prospect of a further season in the Premier League is emerging as the most likely outcome despite the fact Chelsea will not make the top four.
Atletico boss Diego Simeone has moved on since Felix left the club during the January transfer window.
They have won 12 and lost just one of 16 games since the player’s departure on a six month deal to Chelsea paying around £9.7m in fees.
Simeone is keen to make the move permanent but Atletico chiefs want £88m for the Portuguese international, who has fallen down the pecking order at Chelsea in recent weeks.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
He has been on the bench for the last three matches under caretaker boss Frank Lampard.
Felix, 23, is settled in London and happy to stay but wants assurances from the incoming permanent boss – expected to be Mauricio Pochettino – that he will get game time.
With that and with Chelsea reluctant to pay the full asking price for Felix, a compromise second loan is likely.
That would cost Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly around £18m in fees plus Felix’s wages of around £250k-a-week.
