Harry Kane ‘open to running down Tottenham contract and leaving on FREE TRANSFER’ amid Man Utd interest

HARRY KANE is open to running down his Tottenham contract, according to reports.SunSport revealed last month that Manchester United are confident they can sign the Spurs striker, should the North Londoners miss out on a Champions League spot.

Kane, 29, has 14 months remaining on his Tottenham deal, and figures within the club are growing doubtful over whether he will pen a new one.
According to the Telegraph, the England skipper would consider seeing out his deal at Tottenham before leaving on a free transfer.
Man United would be willing to offer him a £100,000 boost on his current £200k-a-week Spurs deal.
While players leaving on free transfers can often command huge signing-on-fees.

Red Devils fans sang “we’ll see you in June” at Kane during last night’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham.
United chiefs were encouraged after a positive meeting with the striker’s representatives via intermediaries last month.
But they would like to complete a deal quickly, and avoid a long drawn-out summer transfer saga.
The Red Devils have experienced difficult negotiations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy in the past, while recruiting Dimitar Berbatov and Michael Carrick.

Should Levy fail to accept a bid prior to the beginning of pre-season, United could turn to other targets.
Asked about United fans’ chants last night, Kane refused to be drawn.
He said: “I heard what they were saying but I’m just focused on this team and trying to finish strongly.”
Spurs’ all-time leading scorer then opened up on what went on at Spurs earlier this week, with Cristian Stellini having been sacked as acting head coach on Monday.
He said: “The chairman asked for a meeting. Obviously I won’t go into what was said but I think it was important [for him] to understand where the players’ heads were at that moment.
“Obviously coming off the back of that result. And it wasn’t just that result. It had been building up since the international break when we conceded the two goals against Southampton.
“It was an honest conversation of where everyone is at and what we need to try to do to give us the best possible chance to finish the season with something.
“We’re still fighting for fourth place but if it’s not fourth we’ll try to finish fifth or sixth, as high up as we can.
“In this league, it’s so competitive, you can easily end up 8th or 9th if you’re not careful. That’s what it was – to give us the best chance. And I’m glad we reacted like that today.”

Fans stunned as James Milner lined up for shock Premier League transfer from Liverpool aged 37

FANS are shocked to hear Liverpool legend James Milner is tipped to join high-flying Prem rivals Brighton – at the age of 37.The ex-England midfielder is poised for a summer free transfer, despite still being loved by Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp for his versatility.
James Milner’s successful stint under Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool could end in MayCredit: PA
The Athletic’s David Ornstein reckons Brighton are favourites ahead of promoted Burnley to land the former Manchester City star.
“Wow!” and “What!” were among the stunned responses from supporters on social media.
Milner has won the Prem, Champions League and FA Cup in his eight years at Anfield.
Before that he helped City lift the top-flight crown twice, as well as tasting victory in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Now it’s thought likely he’ll join fellow ex-Liverpool star Adam Lallana, 34, at the Amex Stadium.
The Athletic suggest Klopp would prefer to keep Milner but there’s been “no indication” of Reds’ chiefs proposing a new contract.
Brighton must wait until his current deal expires before making any approach.
But the Seagulls are said to have discussed the signing “internally” and regard him as an ideal recruit for manager Roberto De Zerbi’s passing style.

Liverpool fans appeared divided over Milner’s possible departure.
One posted: “Hope we keep him and sell that loser injury prone clown Thiago. I hope legends like Milner, Henderson and Fabinho stay and try and develop Jones.”
But another argued: “He is actually not that bad, he is so much better than Henderson.”
And a third supporter urged the Reds to attempt a cheeky exchange deal.
He wrote: “Milner swap for Mac” – a reference to Brighton’s much-wanted Argentina midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. More

Arsenal’s defence was blown away by Haaland, but Rob Holding seems to get the most stick because he’s English

UNFORTUNATELY for Arsenal, their game against Manchester City looked like men versus boys.As a result, Mikel Arteta’s dream of lifting the Premier League title is done.
Rob Holding was criticised after Arsenal’s defeat at Man CityCredit: Getty
In fact, I thought it was done when they failed to close out against West Ham.
Arsenal may have lost at the Etihad — big time — but the three games before were more mentally destructive.
Had they scored a third against Liverpool and seen off West Ham and Southampton, that would have shaped their destiny.
It is difficult to keep saying they “bottled it”, and with my previous comments on Arsenal everyone is going to associate that with me.
    READ MORE ARSENAL NEWS
They have done very well this season but, ultimately, it is over.
That result has shown me that City are just on another level in every department, as they are to a lot of teams in this country.
Rodri showed Thomas Partey there is another level. Erling Haaland showed that to Gabriel Jesus. Kyle Walker showed Gabriel Martinelli.
Kevin De Bruyne stepped up and made that game look easy. Jack Grealish grew into it. The higher the stakes, those bigger players say, ‘Let’s have a bit of this’. Arsenal didn’t have that.

Erling Haaland bullied Arsenal’s backlineCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
Their squad depth right now is vulnerable. They need three or four players over the summer to be in a position to compete on all fronts. Arsenal tried to press, which was actually very good, and nick it high up.
But then City just clipped it into Haaland and he was so strong and powerful.
I was at the first game between them, at the Emirates, and he wasn’t like that.
His link-up was not great and Gabriel and William Saliba had him on toast, even though he eventually scored.
But on Wednesday . . . Wow! He was a monster. I know he missed chances but that was his best all-around game in a City shirt.
I felt sorry for Rob Holding. He got the short end of the stick, even though Gabriel got bullied just as badly.
Is it because Rob is English so we have to give him a bit more?
Ben White was also poor. Oleksandr Zinchenko was awful. So, the abuse of Rob was strange, and he even ended up scoring.
    ‘A SCAPEGOAT’
It is always easy to watch a game and criticise, but in the heat of the moment he got really tight on Haaland, who had an unbelievable first touch before the first goal. It was just poor defending in general.
At times, Rob has become a scapegoat. He didn’t play as poorly as people think.
Sometimes, you just have to look back at City and go, ‘That’s a bloody good team’.
The biggest telling point for me was that after the game, the City players were not celebrating wildly. It felt like job done, who’s next?
That is the sign of a team who are used to that level of pressure.
But I would disagree that the pressure is now off Arsenal. I actually think it is on more than ever.
If they go through these next five games and win two, draw two, lose one, it will feel like a waste of time. They will then carry that into next year.
City laid a marker on Arsenal. These Arsenal boys need to go and do that to Chelsea and Newcastle to show them they will be around for a long time.

FROM my experiences, the most common mindset of a squad with a caretaker boss in charge is: if the club aren’t taking it seriously, why should I?
You don’t point fingers at the guy who has just stepped in, more at the club.
The players will think: “We all know this coach won’t be here for the long term. You as an owner do not know what that even looks like — so why don’t I just wait until summer and then I’ll figure out my long term?”
Players want leadership but what does the leadership look like right now at Stamford Bridge? Questionable.
Tottenham? All over the place. They have just got rid of a manager, a director of football and an interim — and it shows.
That was my biggest takeaway from Spurs’ loss up at Newcastle.
They were playing against a team who know who the owners are, know what the manager wants, know what the expectations of the fans are and know what they are doing. That’s why Newcastle go out week in, week out and play exciting stuff.
Look at Frank Lampard at Chelsea — it must be really difficult.
I’m sure he took that job with the intention of doing well until the summer and boosting his profile to get another job.
Unfortunately, with the club in disarray, he might struggle to get employed again, his name tarnished alongside Chelsea’s.
As for Ryan Mason at Spurs,  I don’t think it will work. He has the look of a guy positioning himself to let other clubs know he is available.

Spurs have gone from sacking one of the best managers in football in Antonio Conte for Mason, an inexperienced coach — and that shows a clear lack of direction and leadership.
They needed to make a brave statement with a director of football and new manager to give them a couple of weeks to assess and go again in pre-season.

Arsenal could shelve Rice and Caicedo deals to fund more transfers including Mount in huge overhaul with SIX stars going

MIKEL ARTETA is reconsidering Arsenal’s summer transfer strategy following this week’s painful defeat at Manchester City. The club had been planning to make just two major signings and had allocated up to £150million to bid for central midfielders Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo.

But Arteta feels other areas of his squad also need strengthening.
And now they are exploring ways to finance moves for two more defenders and possibly another winger.
Arteta’s rethink comes after noting his team’s title challenge was undermined by centre-half William Saliba’s injury absence.
The French international, 22, was the only first-team regular unavailable for Wednesday’s trip to the Etihad yet his team simply could not cope with City.
    READ MORE ARSENAL NEWS
Losing 4-1 was a huge title blow and Arteta said: “It is extremely hard to reach City’s levels, and we were nowhere near.”
And with Arsenal returning to the Champions League next season after a six-year absence, Arteta knows too many squad players are not up to the required standard to play at the very highest level.
Arteta has relied on a core of 11 players all season but had difficulty maintaining performances with any unavailable.
Rob Holding, Fabio Vieira, Jakub Kiwior, Eddie Nketiah and Reiss Nelson struggled when asked to cover as Arsenal have seen an eight-point lead over City at the top turn into a potential four-point deficit.

Kieran Tierney and Emile Smith Rowe are unhappy with a lack of game time and Folarin Balogun made it clear he is reluctant to return from his Reims loan if he is not going to be a first-team regular.
Yet they could all be told to stay put as back-up next term.
There is still hope of persuading Nelson to sign a new deal before his current one expires at the end of the season.
Other players out on loan — including Nicolas Pepe, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Nuno Tavares, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari — do not figure in Arteta’s plans and will be sold to generate funds.
Brighton’s 3-1 midweek loss at Nottingham Forest means Arsenal have now sealed Champions League qualification.
That will boost their coffers by around £80m and Arteta has nearly £70m burning a hole in his pocket after failed January moves for Caicedo and Mykhailo Mudryk.
Yet West Ham captain Rice could cost as much as £100m and Caceido will not come much cheaper as Brighton rejected Arsenal’s £60m bid then persuaded the 21-year-old to sign a new contract to 2027.
Now Arsenal are looking at potentially cheaper alternatives, with Chelsea’s Mason Mount and Leicester’s Youri Tielemans — who will be a free agent in the summer — both on their radar.

Neil Warnock insists old-school bosses are still in vogue – as younger coaches don’t understand most important skill

NEIL WARNOCK believes managers like himself and Roy Hodgson will always be in fashion. While the 74-year-old has long ditched wearing groovy flares and other outrageous outfits, old-school bosses are still in vogue.
Neil Warnock is still very much in vogue as a manager at the aged of 74
The Huddersfield boss loves reading the nation’s favourite football pullout in The Sun
And that is because there is a shortage of top younger coaches who understand the biggest skill of the job is man-management.
Warnock has made a huge impact at Huddersfield since the club appointed him in February after the spells of Danny Schofield and Mark Fotheringham ended in failure.
The Terriers were bottom of the Championship SEVEN points adrift of safety in mid-March — but this morning after a run of one defeat in seven sit a point clear of the drop.
As I walked into Warnock’s office to meet for a cuppa, he was reading something else that is still in vogue — your much-loved Goals pullout in The Sun, which he picks up every day.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL
But there are some things he would consign to history.
He said: “I wouldn’t bring back flares although one of the lads told me, ‘Gaffer, they’re returning!’”
Reminiscing while flicking through old photos from the 1970s, he shows one of him during his playing days with a full mop of hair and a bushy beard.
He said: “I’d bring back that haircut I had at York City. Look at me, I had all that hair and a beard. I can’t even grow one now. I’ve not even got eyebrows anymore! I still have a head of hair though.”

Neil Warnock during his playing days at York City
A dapper-looking young Neil Warnock during his playing days at Hartlepool
Twenty-eight years his junior, that is something I cannot boast — but there are also many younger managers who lack something else he has in abundance.
And that is a huge charismatic personality with an ability to make average footballers feel as confident as Lionel Messi for 90 minutes.
It is no coincidence Warnock has won eight promotions in his career — four of them to the top flight.
He said: “It used to be the fashion to have older managers and then the trend moved to younger coaches.
“They talk about tactics, formations and what have you — yet 95 percent of this job is and always will be man-management.
“Pep Guardiola knows what he’s doing but the biggest thing he does is get the players to believe in what he says. That’s why he’s successful.”
It is almost as though Warnock and Hodgson keep coming out of retirement in their race to be the oldest-ever manager with the ex-England boss currently setting the record at Palace, aged 75.
Warnock laughs: “Roy wasn’t daft there. I’d come back into football with that squad.”
But the Yorkshireman has watched as clubs like Tottenham and Leicester have sacked experienced and successful coaches like Antonio Conte and Brendan Rodgers — while he thinks West Ham have been sensible to stick with David Moyes.
He said: “You just need an older head sometimes. I look at some of the decisions clubs make and who they’ve appointed as a caretaker. I’m thinking ‘This is silly.’ Anyone who has a clue about football knows it’s not going to be a success. It baffles me.
“That’s why there’ll always be a job for me every February, March and April if I keep my health.
Warnock on autographs and selfiesNEIL WARNOCK always drums into his players the importance of taking time to sign autographs … because he does not want fans left heartbroken like he was.
The legendary boss — when he was just eight — was snubbed by a Sheffield United player after waiting an hour and a half in the pouring rain after a match.
He said: “I was waiting until quarter past six and asked this player, who I won’t name, if I could have his autograph and he replied, ‘Sorry I’m in a rush, I got so much on’ before running across the street. I cried my eyes out. I never refuse autographs or selfies. I hate players with headphones on going straight in or out and not doing that for the genuine fans.
“How long does it take to sign a few autographs and take a few photos?
“I’ve just had an email sent to me from a fan with photo of me and him when he was a kid when I managed here in the 1990s. What players must realise is that doing something like that is a moment these fans remember forever.”

“When Conte made those comments about Tottenham before he left, people were saying he just did so because he wanted to get out — but he spoke the truth. I agreed.
“Brendan will benefit from leaving Leicester because when I look around I don’t think there are many good managers at the minute and he is one so will get a decent job.
“I’m chuffed for Moyesy, though, he’s done a good job at West Ham.”
Warnock always rates the three months he spent at Rotherham in 2016 when he led them to Championship safety as his greatest achievement but he believes that will be eclipsed if he keeps Huddersfield up.
He said: “We had leaders in that dressing room that you’d want to be in the trenches with — whereas we haven’t got a lot of talkers here.
“But these lads compensate for that by their willingness to learn and listen to what we say.
“When we had our first team meeting, I asked my assistant Ronnie Jepson to sit to the side of the room and look at how many of the players were looking down at the floor or up at the ceiling or glancing at their watches.
“Ronnie told me, ‘Apart from one player, the whole group was glued to you.’ I knew then they were relieved to be getting our help and we had something to work with.
“There were early hiccups — conceding silly goals and a couple of 4-0 defeats to Burnley and Coventry.
“Even against Burnley, I learned a lot about three or four players because we had asked for them to do certain things and they couldn’t do it.
“We brought in three or four players that had been bombed out. Their contracts were up and had been told they could go. I was thinking we can use these — so I put my arms around them and said, ‘I’ll get you a contract somewhere else if you play for me and Huddersfield don’t want you.’ And they’re playing out of their skins.
“Then we’ve got young lads like Jack Rudoni, who has taken a lot on board and will be an exciting player. And we’ve got the experience of players like Danny Ward back in the team.”
The 1-1 draw at Sunderland last time out pleased Warnock — although frustratingly this week he received confirmation from the PGMOL that the Tom Lees disallowed goal should have stood.
Warnock shrugs his shoulders and sighs: “That’s another two points we’ve missed out on because of refs.”
Warnock on Sheffield United’s promotionNEIL WARNOCK believes the best signing Paul Heckingbottom has made at Sheffield United was bringing in his assistant Stuart McCall.
The ex-Blades boss and boyhood fan was delighted to watch them clinch promotion with a 2-0 in over West Brom on Wednesday.
And Warnock said: “Paul has done so well. They’ve had a lot of injuries. People forget that. They’ve had a couple of sticky patches but have just stuck at it and I’m delighed.
“Stuart McCall, his assistant, was the best signing he ever made because he has seen and done it all and is such a nice man who knows what he’s doing.
“He’s just that kind of person you need in your ear when you’re a bit doubtful about one or two things.
“They’ve already been written off and tipped to be relegated. It’ll all depend what happens with the owners and how much support he gets.
“When we got promoted, I didn’t get much support. We barely spent a penny. So let’s wait and see how much help Paul gets.”

Huddersfield were cited for making a complaint to the EFL regarding Burnley fielding a weakened team against fellow struggling Reading after promotion had been wrapped up.
But the Terriers boss said: “We didn’t make a complaint. I simply said in a press conference it’s a shame we didn’t get to play Burnley after they’d been promoted. It’s just bad luck!”
Yet Warnock knows everything is in his team’s hands with three games left. After tomorrow’s trip to his ex-team Cardiff, who are all but safe, they finish with two home games against already-promoted Sheffield United and then potentially a huge game with Reading.

He said: “The biggest ingredient for a scrap like this is belief. You must believe you can win and if we play to our top standard we can beat anyone. We’re going to give it our best shot.” And that you can be sure of.
