European Club Association was created to appease the richest clubs after failed Super League plot

THE fallout from the nuclear explosion which could have destroyed the unity of European club football is changing the game again.Drastic action taken by supporters of the Premier League clubs who wanted to join it effectively sank the European Super League.
Uefa has initiated another attempt to appease the self-identified elite six of EnglandCredit: Reuters
One or two further attempts to appease the self-identified elite six of England were aborted.
Then along came another, this time initiated by Uefa with a body named the European Club Association — which they arrogantly describe as the “Heart of Football”.
My immediate reaction is that their heart already requires a transplant.
No question, Uefa were spooked by the discovery that ESL clubs were about to wreck their structure.

And with Fifa also sniffing around the multi-billions of our continent’s leading leagues, the ECA was born.
The motto should have been “More for the few”.
And last week an  antidote to the ECA was introduced, the Union of European Clubs, which quickly brought applause from hundreds of neglected also-rans.
Sorry about the rash of ‘E’ initials. Only the mobile phone company EE have more.

In their case they stand for “Everything Everywhere” which is rather appropriate for Uefa and Fifa, people who have plans for dictatorship of the people’s game.
It’s no accident that Manchester City and United, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea, six promoters of the aborted Super League, are the only full English members of the ECA.
They have the votes to make the important decisions. The rest could simply be referred to as ‘observers’ but are politely called ‘associate members’.
Some Prem clubs outside the top six have agreed to be ‘associate members’, as have other clubs throughout Europe.
Among their ranks are mighty Valletta of Malta, average crowd 1,000; Vikingur of the Faroe Islands, average about 400; and Kairat of Kazakhstan, individual plastic seats for a 23,000-capacity crowd.
On a geographical note, 85 per cent of Kazakhstan is in Asia and has a border with China. In my book, that is not Europe.
Vikingur, Kairat and Valletta, and many others among the 110 full  members, are not the kind of opposition — or should I say allies? — the Glazers or Abu Dhabi signed up for.
They expected Juventus, Real Madrid or Barcelona.
But this trio are absent from the ECA, presumably keeping their powder dry while hoping for a miraculous ESL rebirth.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas, fast becoming the voice of the thousand-plus clubs outside the ECA, said: “I’m fed up with hearing that the ECA represents the European clubs. It represents the elite clubs in Europe.
“We try to defend solidarity but that is not just ten per cent of the clubs. It has to be everyone.
“Is the ECA open? Not to vote and not for  decision-making. Which is what is really necessary.”
The ECA was created to appease the richest.
They signed a ‘memorandum of understanding’ with Uefa and have a say in how the money from competitions is dished out.
And surprise, surprise, it’s not distributed fairly!
The Champions League will expand next year and Fifa have announced an overblown Club World Cup in 2025.
And guess where both finals are due to be held.
You got it, the USA, one of the host nations for the 2026 World Cup.
All for the same reason millions of the ‘huddled masses’ first arrived in New York: money.
And that is what the ECA are all about.
    Read More on The Sun
Thirty per cent of Champions League prize money is based on a club’s historical European performances, enhancing the already huge financial disparities between and within leagues.
I doubt this will change, no matter how worthy the Union of European Clubs is. More

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Bellingham, 19, was strongly linked with a move to Liverpool in recent months.
That was until the Reds pulled out of the race to sign the England star at the beginning of April.
Then, in a recent interview with Sky Sports, Henderson picked The Beatles over Oasis and was asked to name his favourite track by the band.
He responded “Hey Jude” – before proceeding to bust out laughing.

Chuckling away, Henderson knowingly added: “That’s a bit controversial isn’t it at the minute.”
Henderson and Bellingham are good friends, and back at the World Cup celebrated hilariously together after inspiring England to victory over Senegal.
Their friendship, as well as Bellingham’s friendship with Trent Alexander-Arnold, sparked rumours that the ex-Birmingham City man was on his way to Anfield.
But Liverpool are now claimed to have ended their pursuit of Bellingham due to the finances involved in any potential transfer.

So Henderson admitted naming Hey Jude as his favourite Beatles track was a “controversial” move.
Bellingham is one of the hottest prospect in world football and already has 24 England caps to his name, despite his tender age.
SunSport exclusively revealed Manchester City began ramping up their charm offensive to land Bellingham last October.
Elsewhere, Manchester United and Real Madrid are also keen on his signature.
Bellingham has scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in 40 games in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund this season. More

He will now be able to work in the game, albeit in a reduced capacity.
Despite his partially successful appeal, many Spurs fans online would not be keen on a reunion.

He was responsible for hiring Nuno Espirito Santo, who had not been on Spurs’ shortlist prior to Paratici’s arrival.
Daniel Levy then drove a move for Antonio Conte, after deciding to sack Nuno ten Premier League games into his tenure.
During Paratici’s first summer at Spurs, they signed Bryan Gil, Emerson Royal, Pape Matar Sarr, Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini – with Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur coming in January.
Tottenham were also busy in last summer’s transfer market, recruiting Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie.
Pedro Porro and Arnaut Danjuma were signed in January, with Conte going on to be sacked in March after his staggering ten-minute rant following Spurs’ 3-3 draw at Southampton.

Sheikh Jassim’s revised proposal is understood to be worth up to £5.5billion for full ownership of the club PLUS a huge extra sum for rebuilding Old Trafford and the Carrington training ground.
But Sheikh Jassim’s entourage is already sounding out their fellow Qatari owners of PSG in a bid to land Neymar as the new face of United.
Neymar, who moved to Ligue 1 in a £198m deal from Barcelona in 2017, has two years left on his current PSG contract.
His relationship with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe has been problematic at times and it is believed the South American, on a staggering £490,000-a-WEEK, would be keen on a move to the Prem.

Landing Neymar would be a huge coup for Sheikh Jassim, who feels his bid, which would leave United debt-free for the first time in two decades, represents the best option for the club and fans.
But with Sir Jim and Ineos also making their pitch – with the options of a purchase of the Glazers’ 60 per cent stake and another offer for a slightly lower share which would see Joel and Avram Glazer remain involved – it means the family that has run United for 18 years must now decide if they REALLY want to sell.
Despite the prospect of the two Glazer siblings staying, Ineos insist the Ratcliffe bid would ensure his control of the club.
That’s even if he did not drive out the current co-chairmen.

Kane ‘open to running down contract’
Harry Kane is open to running down his Tottenham contract, reports tonight suggest.
SunSport revealed last month that Manchester United are confident they can sign the Spurs striker, should the North Londoners miss out on a Champions League spot.
Kane, 29, has 14 months remaining on his Tottenham deal, and figures within the club are growing doubtful over whether he will pen a new one.
According to the Telegraph, the England skipper would consider seeing out his deal at Tottenham before leaving on a free transfer.

    Ex-United star follows Dad’s footsteps
Former Man United star Nani has seen his son follow in his footsteps after signing for his former club.
Son, Lucas, has signed a contract with Sporting Lisbon, where Nani played during his youth career.
Nani joined the Sporting CP youth team back in 2003, winning the National Junior Championship in 2004-05, before making his first-team debut early in the 2005-06 season.
He signed for Manchester United in 2007, who paid about £22million for the young winger.

Red Devils to face Gunners in summer friendly
The Red Devils confirmed this afternoon that they will take on Arsenal in New York this summer in a pre-season friendly.
It is the third game of pre-season to be announced by the club.
The game will take place on July 22 at MetLife Stadium, and is the first fixture on the tour of the USA.
Erik ten Hag and Co will then take on Wrexham in San Diego on July 25, and Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas on July 30.
There is still one more tour fixture to be announced.
Maguire blow as Ten Hag calls Bruno captain
Erik ten Hag cast more doubt over Harry Maguire’s future by labelling Bruno Fernandes as Manchester United captain.
The Old Trafford boss directed the subtle blow to official skipper Maguire before Thursday’s 2-2 draw at Tottenham.
The England centre-back missed that Premier League match with what Ten Hag called a “training injury”.
But over the previous three weeks Maguire had reignited hopes of staying beyond the summer.

His generally strong form standing in for crocked regulars Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez has helped the Red Devils reach the FA Cup final and move six points clear of fifth-placed Spurs.
In Maguire’s absence, Luke Shaw once more switched inside from left-back to partner Victor Lindelof at Tottenham.
But having swaggered to a 2-0 lead through Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford, United were pegged back by Spurs’ second-half transformation.
Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min earned a draw that meant the Red Devils fell two points behind Newcastle in third spot.
And ahead of that clash Ten hag revealed his delight at Fernandes shaking off an injury suffered in last Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final success over Brighton.
The Dutchman said: “He’s tough, he takes responsibility, he wants to play and, of course, we’re happy he’s there because he’s a big players for us and he makes a big impact in every game.
“He’s our captain, so we’re really happy.”
Harry ‘just focussed on this season’
Harry Kane says he heard Manchester United supporters’ chants regarding a potential transfer move as he opened up on Daniel Levy’s meeting with the Tottenham squad.
The England captain played a key role in helping Tottenham come from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with United on Thursday.
And at half time of the game, when the Old Trafford club were leading by two, the visiting supporters were heard chanting: “Harry Kane, we’ll see you in June.”
When asked about the songs from the away end last night, the star said: “I heard what they were saying but I’m just focussed on this team and trying to finish strongly.”

    Garnacho seals new deal
United starlet Alejandro Garnacho has penned a new five-year contract with the Red Devils.
And eagle-eyed fans have spotted a similarity with Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Old Trafford faithful haven’t seen Garnacho in action for a while, with the 18-year-old having been out with an ankle injury since early March.

It hasn’t been a case of out of sight, out of mind, however, with fans thrilled to have him signed up for the long term.
As Garnacho – who has five goals and six assists from his 32 games this season – beamed for pictures upon agreeing his new deal, United supporters noticed his pearly whites, likening them to Ronaldo’s.
One wrote: “Garnacho got the Ronny teeth transformation… we’re loading.”
And a second observed: “Ronaldo had bad teeth. He fixed them. Garnacho had bad teeth. He fixed them. 👀😂”
United could go for Neymar AND Kane
United might launch a sensational summer double bid for Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar and Tottenham striker Harry Kane.
SunSport understand United could pull off a double megadeal if Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani takes over the club from the Glazers.

Sheikh Jassim is eyeing a marquee signing to show his intention of restoring the Red Devils at the top of the Premier League as well as Europe.
And the Qatari billionaire is planning to start with Neymar, who could be on his way out of PSG due to a raft of injuries, his mammoth salary and club’s decision to change direction.
A move for the Brazil international does not necessarily rule out a bid for long-time target Kane.
The England captain is still thought to be at the top of United’s transfer list this summer.

Red Devils, Chelsea and Spurs in for Jonathan
Manchester United have been joined by Chelsea and Tottenham in the pursuit of Jonathan David, according to reports.
French outlet L’Equipe have claimed the trio are candidates to sign the Lille forward for just over £57million.
Only Kylian Mbappe has outscored the Canadian in Ligue 1 this season, with David netting 21 goals and adding four assists in 31 games.
United are desperate to stock up on striker options this summer, with David representing an intriguing alternative to the likes of Victor Osimhen and Harry Kane, who likely cost north of £100m.
And there is a growing expectation he will take the next step this summer.

    Breaking: Garnacho signs new deal
Alejandro Garnacho has signed a new five-year deal at Man Utd.
A club statement confirming the news said: “Manchester United is pleased to announce that Alejandro Garnacho has signed a new contract that will extend his stay at the club until 30 June 2028.
“The Academy graduate has already made 31 appearances for the senior team, at the age of 18.”
Garnacho himself added: “When I joined this incredible club, I dreamt of achieving my debut, playing at Old Trafford, scoring my first goal and winning trophies with this badge on my chest.
“I feel very proud and emotional to have experienced these moments already, together with my family who have supported me every step of the way.”
    Ex-United star follows Dad’s footsteps
Former Man United star Nani has seen his son follow in his footsteps after signing for his former club.
Son, Lucas, has signed a contract with Sporting Lisbon, where Nani played during his youth career.

    The lowdown on Neymar
The Brazilian attacker is considered one of the biggest talents in the world.
He is also his nation’s joint top goalscorer ever, matching Pele’s 77 goals.
And he would be a marquee signing for the club to signal the new owners’ intentions moving forward.
He has scored 18 times in 29 games this season, but he has been hampered by ankle injuries.
And his inconsistent availability and reportedly mammoth £616k-per-week contract have led to rumours that PSG would be willing to part ways with him.
Neymar is still the most expensive player in world football following his £198million transfer from Barcelona to the Ligue 1 giants.
His contract at the Parc des Princes is set to run until 2025, although he has the option to extend it to 2027.
    More on Neymar
Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani, the ambitious billionaire bidder from the Middle East, is eyeing the Brazilian as a marquee signing this summer.
It comes with the Glazers, the current club owners, currently seeking further investment in the club with a third round of bidding today.
Some suiters such as Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe are targeting a full buyout of the Americans – however, neither party are yet to match the Glazers’ £6billion price tag.
Should Sheikh Jassim be able to complete a takeover of the club SunSport understands that one of his first actions will be to make an incredible move to sign Neymar.

Maguire to be stripped of captaincy says Winterburn
Ex-Arsenal star Nigel Winterburn has warned Harry Maguire he will stripped of his captaincy if he does not leave Man United in the summer.
Speaking to Paddy Power, he said: “It’s unlikely that Harry Maguire will be Manchester United’s club captain next year because you want your club captain to be playing regular football.
“He certainly won’t be club captain, but whether he looks for a move away depends on whether he feels he’s getting enough game time or can force his way back into the team.
“My gut feeling is that he’ll move on from Manchester United if he doesn’t get the reassurances that he’ll be after.
“It’s a difficult situation because modern players are used to playing less and still being part of the squad.”
‘We lacked control’ – blasts Eriksen
Christian Eriksen has admitted complacency played a part in United throwing away a two-goal lead over Tottenham.
Eriksen was controversially hooked in the 61st minute of the match, but did not hold back when talking about the loss.
He told BT Sport: “I think we took a bit of the gas off.
“That was our problem. I think it has been [like] that for a few games, where we are sharp and [have not] kept it going.
“I think we lost a bit of energy, a bit of control, and they got belief, and it went the other way. That’s how it goes normally. When you are 2-0 down, anything can change quickly.
“We didn’t have the control to finish them off, [and we] gave them the chance to score the first goal. That gave [them] belief.”
    Super prediction
A supercomputer has predicted how the Premier League season will end.
Man City are tipped the win the title over Arsenal while Man Utd’s 2-2 draw will fortunately not their dent top four hopes too much.

    Stat attack
Marcus Rashford’s goal last night has distinguished him apart from his Man Utd colleagues.
His goal was not just significant for being his 29th of this season but also for being his 50th away goal in all competitions.
And this means he has now scored 19 more away goals for the Red Devils than any other player since his debut back in February 2016.

It has been an incredible turnaround at Villa Park since Unai Emery took charge in October following the sacking of Steven Gerrard.

“So, yes, I do feel a little bit old sometimes. But equally, I am here to talk to the young players and help them.
“A lot is said about the young generation of players and some think they have already done it all, but others want to improve.
“I spent two days training with Jacob Ramsey and instantly knew he will be a massive player not just for Villa but for this country.
“I have taken him under my wing in the gym and we talk about how to do the right things.

“If you go back into my 20s, there is no way you would have caught me near an ice bath.
“But having looked into the science, that place is now like a best friend.
“I am always in there and need it to recover.
“A lot is said about diet and to know what to eat and drink.
“But I don’t cut out everything. I have a sweet tooth — I blame my dad for that — and I have got a cupboard full of sweets, chocolates and biscuits.
    “I would like to say I only eat them after a game but . . . ”
Villa travel to Old Trafford, where Young was club captain during his 8½ years at United, on the back of an incredible unbeaten Premier League run spanning ten matches — which includes eight wins.
The transformation under Emery has been staggering.
Young said: “He has brought in a winning mentality.
“He has fans thinking of Europe, which is an incredible turnaround as we were looking over our shoulders when he arrived.
What was said about him at Arsenal was unfair but he took it on the chin and is back in the Prem and wants to win trophies at Villa.Ashley Young on Unai Emery
“He lives and breathes football. On the bus after an away game, he immediately has his laptop out looking at a replay of the game.
“His experience is so important. At half-time, the players could be having a heated discussion and he says, ‘Calm down, just relax’ and we are like, ‘We cannot relax, we need to talk about this’.
And he adds, ‘Stay calm, stick to the game plan and remember the importance of resilience and keeping the ball’.
“I thought what was said about him at Arsenal was unfair but he took it on the chin and is back in the Premier League and wants to win trophies at Villa.”
Young’s contract runs out this summer, although surely one of Villa’s best bits of business would be to give him an extra season.
Maybe even two, which would bring him within a few weeks of his 40th birthday in July 2025.
He added: “Of course I want to stay. It is a fantastic club, I have enjoyed my time here and I don’t want it to be over.

“I know I’m not getting any younger but I am nowhere near ready to retire.
“I still have that drive. I am a winner. I played European football at Villa the first time around and to help the club achieve  that again would be one of the biggest things in my career.” More

Raheem Sterling warns Chelsea rebuild will take time like Man City’s and says club has ‘talent’ but ‘needs structure’

RAHEEM STERLING admits it will take time for Chelsea to get back on top of English football. The winger spent seven years at Manchester City before his £47.5million move last summer and says the team he joined in 2015 was nothing like today’s serial champions.

He has endured a frustrating debut season at Stamford Bridge, with the club now hoping to make Mauricio Pochettino their FIFTH head coach in less than a year.
Sterling, 28, said: “Consistency and structure go hand in hand and City have that in abundance.
“My first few years at City were nothing like that. We were all over the place. They weren’t the best.
“We had one management leave and another came in. Pep came in and, in the first season, played good football but it wasn’t there. But there was structure and time to implement his way, get the right players and people buying into it.

“It’s no coincidence that they are doing so well because they do it better than anybody else.”
City are favourites to win their fifth title in six years under Guardiola.
Caretaker Frank Lampard is Chelsea’s fourth boss this season as the new owners get to grips with their long-term project.
Wednesday’s 2-0 defeat at Brentford was Blues legend Lamps’ fifth straight loss since returning earlier this month.

Talks with Pochettino are progressing well and the former Tottenham boss is widely expected to take over in June.
England ace Sterling said: “Whoever takes over will find an unbelievable bunch of talented players.
“Like anything, wherever you go, you need a structure, that we as players follow, and a leader.
“It’s as simple as that. We have to buy into whoever is manager.
“We know the Chelsea fans aren’t used to this but we have to try to look at the bigger picture between now and the end of the season.
“Be as positive as we can, try to finish strongly. Their support drives the players on.
We want the winning feeling back in the buildingRaheem Sterling
“In the second half against Brentford we could feel their energy transferring on to us.
“We want the winning feeling back in the building. We know the Chelsea fans deserve a lot better than this.”
Chelsea face a tough trip to Prem leaders Arsenal on Tuesday.
Londoner Sterling added: “A fixture against Arsenal is always a high quality game.
“But it can’t be about what ifs? We have to go there and look like we believe we can win.

Sterling says hurting Chelsea stars ‘sit in changing room looking into space’ as they ‘can’t understand’ shock results

RAHEEM STERLING has a clear vision of what he wants out of life at Chelsea and what is expected of him.But from the outside it’s not easy to see anything but chaos and disorder from a turbulent season.

Sterling was the first signing of new chairman Todd Boehly following a £4.25billion takeover 11 months ago.
And he admits the vast squad — including £545million of signings under Boehly — is hurting.
Two sacked managers, five defeats in a row, 11th in the Premier League.
All that’s missing is a Partridge and Pear Tree.

Well, that and a new manager coming in this summer to finally stop the ground shifting under everyone’s feet every time they try to take a step forward.
Sterling has managed only six full 90 minutes from a year in which he was hoping to latch onto the ingrained Chelsea philosophy of competing for major honours every season – and winning more often than not.
Instead he has found himself part of a woefully underachieving squad being regularly booed off by its own fans.
The £47.5million winger said: “You can’t have positives every day in life.

“Sometimes you have lows. I haven’t been in this situation in my career so far but I am more than up to the challenge.
“We are disappointed when we come off the pitch and feel angry and disappointed. There are times when we finish a game you just sit in the changing room looking into space because you can’t understand what has just happened.
“It’s tough to take. You are always trying to look for a positive solution.
“There will be conversations, players trying to come to terms with what has happened in the last ten minutes or so.
“It’s not easy. The feeling of winning games week in, week out is one that everyone in the dressing room is used to. So it’s what we enjoy and we want it back. To not have it this year is not the best.
“Performances haven’t been at the level they should, mine included. I haven’t been anywhere near my usual level.

“But football can be cruel and the more you try to fix something the worse it gets. If you fixate on something it can get worse.
“We need to look in the right direction and look to whoever comes in as the next manager to build for the future.
“We want the results and winning trophies to be the main attraction for the football club like it has been for so many years. That’s why I came here, because of the rich history and with the new owners and new direction it was a no brainer. And I have no regrets at all.
“That’s the beautiful thing. I enjoyed my time at my previous club and won a lot of trophies. But I like a new challenge and this is the challenge I signed up for.
“It’s a challenge I will overcome. It will taste even sweeter to win silverware coming from a moment like this than if you were winning every single week.”
Lose at Arsenal on Tuesday and it’s a sixth defeat in a row for Chelsea for the first time since 1993.
There has been upheaval in every corner of the club.
Sterling has played out of position half at least five times to suit the needs of the team.
Sterling said: “I haven’t complained about not playing in my position. I have come here with the intention of trying to do my part as best I can.
“From when the owners took over things have moved pretty fast. There have been a few turnovers in terms of coaches, people higher up than coaches have changed as well, it has been a process, a learning curve for everyone.
“And as a football club we are trying to get it right and we will get it right. It will take time but that doesn’t mean we accept it.
“We are much bigger than this and we have to get the next couple of months right and get back to the level we should be at.
“Initially coming here was a dream come true. That hasn’t transpired but again it’s still an energy, something inside me is still raring to go, knowing that there will be a turn for the better.
“The more things are put into place the better it will get so I haven’t given up on the vision that the owners gave me at the start. I know it will turn.”
Next season will be Sterling’s first without Champions League football since he joined Manchester City eight years ago.
He said: “It’s not something we are used to here and it is something we need to change. To do that we have to compete at a high level next year. It is one thing missing out on the Champions League one year the next is not being in it for a couple so we need to buck up our ideas.
“We can sit here and moan and look at the negatives but it will only make me stronger because I am looking to the happy times again.
“If we dwell on the negatives it’s going to go into next season and we won’t start on good terms. But if you take these negatives from this season and process them and use them to uplift yourself we can use the summer to come back stronger.

“The ability in the dressing room is undeniable and if we have someone who can take control of that we are more than capable of challenging every year.
