Graeme Souness fights back tears as he announces emotional retirement on Sky Sports after 15 years

GRAEME SOUNESS showed his emotional side as he held back tears during his Sky Sports farewell on Sunday.Sky Sports confirmed earlier this season that Souness would be standing down from his role as a pundit – which he has held for 15 years.

The 69-year-old Scot’s final game came at Anfield as Liverpool beat Tottenham 4-3 in a thrilling contest.
And Souness, who became a pundit shortly after giving up management in 2006, had a few words for the viewers at home.
Speaking about the end of his punditry career, he said: “I’m going to miss you guys, the guys behind the scenes, our makeup girl, I’ll miss you all.
“You know, for me, I decided that football management wasn’t for me anymore. I had the wrong temperament for it, the wrong personality.

“And then I was given the opportunity to do this and it’s been magnificent. It’s just been the most fantastic time for me, because I love football, I care about football and I worry about it going forward.
“But in Sky’s hands, it’s in good hands, safe hands, and I think over the years we’ve created a Premier League with great detail and I think we look after football very well.
“But for me personally, I’ve got the buzz of live football coming to some fantastic games and some fantastic stadiums and some great events.
“I think I owe 100 apologies to people, but we haven’t got time for that.

“I think people at home obviously don’t always agree with us, but it’s been great guys it really has.
“And it’s great right now to be amongst friends and nothing goes on forever, but I’ve got a lot of things coming up, I’m involved in my DEBRA charity and on the 27th of this month I’ll announce the challenge I’m getting involved in.
“But it’s been great so thank you to everyone.”
Sky Sports director of football Gary Hughes paid tribute to Souness as he said: ‘We will miss Graeme’s no-nonsense approach in the studio – matched only by his playing style.”
Fans reacted on social media to the news, with one saying: “Can’t say I always agreed with Souness, but can’t fault his passion and perspective on the game.
“Sky Sports will be a lesser place without his input. Happy 70th birthday next week and all the best for the future.”
Following Souness’ punditry retirement, SunSport has taken a look back at some of his most memorable moments on our TV screens.
    The Pogba affair
Souness seemingly always had a bee in his bonnet about Pogba.
But, even though he drew Jamie Redknapp and Gary Neville in heated debates about the World Cup winner, it was a moment with affable Micah Richards that was most surprising.
It came during a discussion on old comments made by Pogba’s former agent Mino Raiola about the Frenchman’s future at Man Utd. The playmaker would, of course, get his move in the end.
But the pair spoke over each other and gesticulated furiously as they tried to make their points – while Souness even turned his back at one point.
Richards suggested Raiola had made comments without Pogba’s say-so but ex-Liverpool man Souness was having none of it.
He blasted: “Not a chance, not a chance. He’s echoing the thoughts of the player.”
    Grealish ain’t all that
“He’s a good player, not a great player,” Souness has said of Man City’s £100million man Jack Grealish.
For Graeme, the former Aston Villa playmaker has yet to do it for Pep Guardiola’s side.
And, during his punditry, he’s let everyone know it. Jack’s not immune to it either.
Grealish hit back at those comments while away on England duty by insisting: “I don’t know what his problem is, he always criticises me.”
Amusingly, Souness retorted on talkSPORT: “I’d love a night out with him.
“I’m not sure I could stay with him but I think I would enjoy a night out with him.”
Grealish has seemingly taken him up on his offer. He wrote on social media, “🤣🤣 let’s do it!! As long as I can bring Pogba as a +1.”
    Beef with Mourinho
The Special One and Graeme clashed over Man Utd’s playing style, as well as fixture congestion.
“I have seen in the football media that certain pundits cannot understand why our players are tired,” Mourinho moaned his programme notes.
“A pundit is not honest if they cannot forget their colours or if they try to hide the truth from their audience. It’s not my fault if their managerial career was very poor.”
But Souness hit back after they beat Ajax in the Europa League final.
“They have turned up in Stockholm, and dug out a result playing the kind of football that is not Manchester United, that’s my biggest beef with them,” he said.
“They don’t attempt to get on the ball, and don’t play enough football for me. If you’re one of the big clubs in the world, which they obviously are, you have to play better football.
    Read More on The Sun
“They won’t win the big trophies playing like that, against the better teams they won’t win the big trophies. You won’t win our league playing like that. They don’t play enough football.”
Souness later said that the only reason Man Utd went with Mourinho was because rivals Man City had a Pep Guardiola, and the Red Devils needed a big name manager. More

Richarlison mocked after shushing celebration just moments before last-gasp Liverpool winner as Spurs throw away

TOTTENHAM forward Richarlison was brutally mocked by football fans after he shushed the Liverpool crowd – just seconds before the Reds bagged a dramatic winner at Anfield. The ex-Everton man, 25, thought he had earned Spurs an unlikely point when he scored a 93rd-minute equaliser to complete a remarkable comeback after the visitors had gone 3-0 down inside 15 minutes.

But there was even more drama to come as Diogo Jota went straight up the other end and struck to clinch a remarkable 4-3 victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
And now those thrilling few minutes have come back to bite Richarlison.
When he scored what looked to be the equalising goal, he was pictured shushing the Liverpool crowd.
He also did his trademark “pigeon dance” with team-mate Son Heung-min.

Just seconds later, the cameras caught him with his hands on his head as he laughed in astonishment at Jota netting the winner.
And fans were not about to let those stark responses go.
Speaking on social media, one person said: “RICHARLISON SHUSHED THE LIVERPOOL FANS JUST TO CONCEDE AND END UP LOSING 1 MIN LATER 😭.”

A third replied: “Dude is cursed.”
And a fourth responded: “This is football heritage.”
Richarlison’s goal at Anfield was his first in the Premier League for Tottenham and just his third of the season in all competitions.
It has been a frustrating first campaign in North London for the £60million man – who scored as many goals for Brazil at the World Cup (3) as he has all season for Spurs.
Tottenham slipped below Liverpool to sixth in the Premier League table following the result on Merseyside.
And they are in danger of missing out on European football altogether as they sit level on points with Aston Villa and just two above Brighton who have three games in hand. More

Viewers rushed to social media to slam the comment.

Another added: “Martin Tyler needs to apologise for that immediately after the game.”
A third added: “I assume Sky Sports will be launching an investigation into Martin Tyler’s racist comments about Son in the Liverpool vs Tottenham match?”
A fourth fumed: “Martin Tyler’s ‘martial arts’ comment about Son’s yellow card was disgusting, xenophobic and racist. Not happy.”
It comes after Tyler was forced to apologise for saying injured Ukraine keeper Heorhiy Bushchan would have to ‘soldier on’ last year.

Chairman Daniel Levy watched on as the away fans sang songs once again urging him to quit and for their money back after the shocking first 15.

Curtis Jones, Luis Diaz and a Salah penalty put Liverpool seemmingly out of sight against a Spurs side that conceded five goals in 20 minutes to Newcastle last weekend.
Harry Kane pulled one back for the visitors before half time before Son scored a second with 10 minutes left.
Richarlison netted the equaliser in the 93rd minute but a slip up at the back was capitalised on by Diogo Jota who clinched the winner.
This sent Klopp into a frenzy as he ran down the touchline celebrating the last minute strike.

But his celebrations were cut short when he pulled his hamstring, clutching his leg as he made his way back to the dugout.
And Scottish tennis legend Andy Murray has shared his reaction on his Twitter account.

Liverpool overtook Spurs to go fifth in the Premier League while also having a game in hand.
Spurs have only won two of their last nine league games and sacked interim manager Cristian Stellini just under a week ago.
Stellini took the reigns on a temporary basis for a handful of games after the sacking of Antonio Conte.
Ryan Mason is back as acting head coach, a role he has previously held in between permanent manager appointments.
They sit sixth in the league, nine points off fourth placed Manchester United.
They host Crystal Palace next weekend as they look to salvage something from this season’s campaign.

But goals from Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, before a 93rd minute leveller from Richarlison, appeared to salvage a point for the visitors.
That was until an incredible finish saw Diogo Jota pop up to score at the death following a Lucas Moura error, just seconds after Richarlison’s equaliser.
Manchester United legend Neville was on Sky Sports commentary duty for the game.
And he described Spurs throwing away a point at the death as “the most Tottenham thing that you will ever see”.

And social media joined in the teasing as well as the transfer speculation.
Spurs hope to keep Kane but United boss Erik ten Hag wants a new world-class No 9.
The England skipper and Napoli’s Victor Osimhen are regarded as prime targets – at around £100million.
And after Lineker posted his jibe at Shearer – complete with a winking emoji – the Toon icon responded: “But will he break it in a Newcastle shirt or a Man Utd shirt!!?”

The Toon, however, are on a free-scoring high in third place, Callum Wilson netting twice in Sunday’s 3-1 comeback win over Southampton.

Some observers believe the Magpies have little chance of luring Kane anyway – as the Red Devils will be so desperate to sign him.

And a neutral posted: “Definitely a Man Utd shirt. U have Isak.”
Kane suffered more frustration the field as Spurs slumped to a last-gasp 4-3 loss at Liverpool this weekend.
Tottenham recovered from being 3-0 down inside 15 minutes, inspired by Kane’s 39th-minute volley.
But after Richarlison levelled three minutes into stoppage time, Diogo Jota slotted a calm winner for the Reds.
And although Kane is now level with Wayne Rooney as the Prem’s second-highest scorer ever, one fan hinted at why the 29-year-old might consider moving: “208 goals 0 trophies.” More

Luckily after taking a few steps with his hand on his thigh, he appeared to be OK.

Fans spotted the moment and flocked to social media to comment on the moment.

While a fifth added: “Jurgen is a nutbag.”
After the full time whistle, Sky Sports said that the German manager had to have some treatment on his hamstring.
When speaking about the winner, Klopp suggested that he has had an ongoing situation with referee Paul Tierney.
He told Sky Sports: “Very emotional of course, especially the situation before their third goal.
“How he can whistle when the linesman keeps his flag down. That is one situation that would not have happened if the ball was in that ended.”
“I don’t know what Mr Tierney has with us, he always will say it is nothing and it is not true. It cannot be, I have to say something, I don’t understand it.
“How he looks at me, I don’t understand it, really no problem with any people and with him as well.
“But again, he was refereeing at Tottenham, when Harry Kane did not get a red card. I don’t want him to get a red card, but it was a red card.
“But it was Mr Tierney and nobody asks him about it because they don’t have to clarify situations, so it is really tricky.
“My celebration aimed at the fourth official, did not say any bad words no nothing, but was unnecessary, and got punished for it immediately and I pulled my hamstring which is fair fine.
“But what he said to me then when he gave me the yellow card.”
When asked to elaborate, Klopp said: “No that is not possible, but it is not okay as well.”
Jota’s goal completed the scoring of one of the most thrilling games of the Premier League season.

Liverpool 4 Tottenham 3: Jota scores last-gasp winner after incredible Spurs fightback all-but ending top four hopes

Yet seconds later, fellow sub Diogo Jota struck at the other end of the pitch to break Spurs’ hearts.
It was a truly bonkers afternoon that for all the amazing goalmouth entertainment showed how both sides are shadows of the ones that contested the Champions League final four years ago.
Spurs’ players will have been bracing themselves for another whip-round to refund supporters after a quarter of an hour here, when quickfire goals from Curtis Jones and Luis Diaz, plus a Mo Salah penalty, put Liverpool 3-0 up.
It was arguably just as bad, if not numerically so, as Newcastle away last week when they shipped five after 21 minutes and the squad ended up reimbursing their poor travelling fans.

By the 93rd minute, Tottenham’s team suddenly looked amazing value for money as they struck back through Harry Kane, Son Heung-min and Richarlison.
But Jota ensured Ryan Mason’s side, for all their fight after their horrendous start, still had that familiar sinking feeling come full time.
Chairman Daniel Levy watched on as the away fans sang songs once again urging him to quit and for their money back after the shocking first 15.
Some Spurs supporters even walked out of Anfield at that point, no doubt fearing another cricket score after their terrorising on Tyneside.

What they missed was one of the games of the season – though they will console themselves with the fact they did not have to witness Jota’s dagger to the heart.
Ryan Mason, the interim who replaced the interim after caretaker chief Cristian Stellini was axed for the shellacking at Newcastle, must have felt all kinds of emotions after what his side had gone through.
The stark fact is though they are down to sixth, level on points with Aston Villa, and only two ahead of in-form Brighton who have three games in hand.
There is a distinct possibility Tottenham will not qualify for Europe at all this season.
Whereas Liverpool – where Eurovision will be held in May – have football on the continent very much in their sights after four successive victories.
This win, as unconvincing as it was in totality, lifted them up to fifth in the league, though a top-four spot looks surely out of reach with Newcastle and Manchester United too far ahead.
Ex-Liverpool and Spurs man Graeme Souness on punditry said this game provided an opportunity for players to fight for their club futures.
For Tottenham, he meant pretty much all of them given the way their season has collapsed.
For the hosts, the Scot was talking more specifically about young midfielders Jones and Harvey Elliott, given the centre of the park is where Liverpool so obviously need reinforcement.
But England Under-21 man Jones showed just why he deserves to be part of the future at Anfield with the opener inside three minutes, carefully firing home a controlled volley inside three minutes after ghosting in behind Pedro Porro.
The academy product was teed up by fellow local lad Trent Alexander-Arnold, taking his Premier League assist tally to SIX for April.
That compares to just three before then all season for the ultra-creative full-back, who has been stepping into midfield more this month as Jurgen Klopp looked to follow Manchester City’s lead to reverse his side’s fortunes.
It was a nightmare start for Mason – and it got even worse two minutes later.
Diaz was surprisingly handed his first start since October having finally recovered from a serious knee injury.
The Colombian, who Spurs tried to buy in January 2022 only to be beaten to his signature by Liverpool, brilliantly diverted a volley in at the near post after Cody Gakpo had cut it back.
Cristian Romero got nowhere near Diaz and it was the Argentine World Cup winner who was at fault again for the third as he senselessly felled Gakpo in the area.
Salah had missed his last two spot-kicks but made no mistake this time, clipping it down the middle.
It took the Egyptian king to 184 Liverpool goals on what was his 300th appearance, moving him one clear of Robbie Fowler’s Reds haul.
His strike sparked an exodus from a number of Spurs fans, with Gary Neville on commentary joking that Spurs’ players should set up a direct debit to reimburse them again after their Geordie horrorshow.
At that point you feared another cricket score but then this Liverpool side have their own failings too, with Klopp admitting a rebuild is needed in the summer.
Their frailties showed when Spurs netted one and perhaps could have had two more before the break.
Dejan Kulusevski could have scored, Son should have scored and the reliable Kane finally did score as he buried Ivan Perisic’s excellent cross.
It took the England captain to 25 Premier League goals for the season and 208 overall – level with Wayne Rooney.
And it left the away fans – those that did stay, at least – with a weird sense of optimism going into the second half.
The visitors were a whisker away from reducing the deficit further after it with Son and Romero both hitting the woodwork.
That pair combined with 13 minutes to go though as Romero clipped a ball through to Son who fired past Alisson to make for an intriguing finish.
A nervy Liverpool were lucky not to go down to ten men too when sub Diogo Jota caught Oliver Skipp with a high boot that left the Spurs man bleeding from the head.
The hosts breathed a sigh of relief when Richarlison was denied a penalty when Ibrahima Konate held him back.

But the Brazilian still had time to head home what he thought was a point-saver as he converted Son’s free-kick before ripping off his shirt and leaping into the crowd in celebration.
Yet there was still to be another sting in the tail, as Jota kept his cool to fire past Fraser Forster, erupt Anfield and leave Spurs devastated once again.
