Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has ‘reservations’ over appointing Nagelsmann as manager – but it’s not a ‘deal breaker’

TOTTENHAM chief Daniel Levy has reservations over Julian Nagelsmann’s age. There is that old phrase — if you’re good enough, you’re old enough.
Julian Nagelsmann is being considered as the new Tottenham managerCredit: EPA
Nagelsmann is 35, so a year younger than Spurs keeper and captain Hugo Lloris and just six years older than Harry Kane and Eric Dier.
It is not a deal breaker but equally Levy wants to make sure the new manager is respected by everyone — including Kane.
Providing he has not gone to Manchester United, of course.
And there is a concern that Nagelsmann, who annoyed Bayern Munich with his outspoken views, could once again prove to be a handful.

That is the last thing Tottenham need.
Another potential stumbling block is the uncertainty over Spurs’ sporting director.
Fabio Paratici resigned when his worldwide ban was upheld and Nagelsmann is said to want to have a clearer idea of who will be overseeing recruitment and strategy before committing.
The German is available after his surprise axing by the Bundesliga giants in March.

And he remains the favourite to take over from Antonio Conte on a permanent basis at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Vincent Kompany is second with the bookmakers after leading Burnley back into the Premier League.
Brendan Rodgers, dismissed by relegation-threatened Leicester last night, is also in the running.

Noni Madueke pulled one back for Frank Lampard’s side midway through the second period.
But Arsenal professionally saw the game out to secure their first win in five games.
The victory takes them back above Manchester City, two points clear having played two games more.
Here is how SunSport’s Mark Irwin saw the performances of the Arsenal players.

    AARON RAMSDALE – 7
Didn’t touch the ball for the first 25 minutes but when he was finally called into action he responded with a splendid save from Chilwell.
Furious when his clean sheet was ruined by Madueke’s second-half goal.
    BEN WHITE – 7
Had Sterling in his pocket all evening and still found the time and energy to get forward and supply the cross for Arsenal’s third goal.
Probably his team’s most improved player this season.

    Gunners have tough test ahead
Arsenal will travel to St James’ Park this weekend to face Eddie Howe’s in-form Newcastle United side.
Keen to keep to pressure on Man City, nothing but three points will be good enough for Mikel Arteta’s side.
It will be a true test of his side to see where they are in their transition under the Spanish manager.
    Midfielder solid as a rock
Granit Xhaka played a big part in this victory for Arsenal, assisting two of The Gunners’ goals in the process.
His movement in the attacking third, created spaces and his link up play allows the more attacking flair players the chance to unlock defences.
They will need his experience for the remainder of the season if they are to win their last four games.

    Gunners show their attacking capabilities
Arsenal showed anyone doubting their flair in the attacking third this evening as they opened up the visitors time and time again.
They could have scored a lot more goals in this game if they had been more clinical in front of goal.
Arteta will be disappointed they didn’t assert that dominance as much in the second half but this was still a very comfortable win.
    Norway we are giving up
Martin Odegaard put in a captain’s performance tonight as he led from the front, giving Arsenal an outlet in the final third.
He slotted into the space created by the players around him and capitalised, getting two goals in the process.
Making sure his side keep Man City honest in this title race is all Arsenal can do between now and the end of the season.

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
Arsenal showed the gulf between these two side’s fortunes currently.
Mikel Arteta will be disappointed that his team did not take full advantage of their dominance.
Frank Lampard will be hoping Christine has a glass of wine, or a bottle, waiting for him when he gets home.

    FT: Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
The referee brings the game to a close.
Solid victory for Arsenal in this London derby.
Martin Odegaard is awarded the man of the match honours.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
90+4. Mudryk does well down the left and gets to the byline and crosses towards the back post.
Havertz is there but he does not get enough contact to test Ramsdale.
Arsenal counter attack and Xhaka shoots from distance but Kepa gets down well to save.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
90+2. The free kick was like ordering a Dominos at 2am on a Saturday night, very disappointing delivery.
When the board said the added time, had Chelsea managed to get a goal there it would have put this Arsenal side under real pressure.
The game has dropped off a bit now as Mikel Arteta’s side look to consolidate what they have.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    90. Partey is penalised for a foul on Chilwell just outside the box.
Chance for the visitors to get a goal and make for a nervy end to this game for Arsenal.
Mudryk and Ziyech are stood over it.
We are going to have five minutes of time added on.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    88. This could of and should have been a much more convincing scoreline this evening.
Currently it looks like Chelsea were in this game but The Gunners have dominated from start to finish.
Considering the score at half time, Frank Lampard will take this.

    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    86. Rob Holding comes on for Mr Glass.
Jorginho comes off for Thomas Partey.
Mikel Arteta would like another goal here to underline his side’s dominance in this game tonight.
    Fofana comes off for Chalobah.

    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea

    84. The ball is slotted through to Odegaard inside the box.
He cuts inside and gets off a shot at goal but it is parried by Kepa.
Gabriel is down on the floor again.
Take him off and put us all out of our misery, the guy is made of glass.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    82. Gabriel is down on the turf once again for Arsenal.
The centre back has spent more time on the grass than most gardeners.
Arsenal look to knock the ball around to play through the Chelsea lines.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    80. Kovacic is booked for a heavy challenge on Jesus.
The high tempo of the Arsenal attacking has dipped since the goal as if they are wary of a comeback.
Chelsea are throwing punches but not landing anything at the moment.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    78. Chelsea whip a cross into the box, Thiago Silva flicks the ball on and it deflects for a corner.
Chance for the visitors to get their big men forward.
The delivery comes in but no one is able to get a telling touch on it.
    Ziyech comes on for Madueke.

    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    76. It is a big call which was the most questionable life choice of Mudryk’s career so far.
Signing an eight-year Chelsea contract or those butterfly tattoos on his neck.
Frank Lampard still has a look on his face like he has just found out he is getting paid in cryptocurrency however.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    74. Zinchenko and Saka come off for Tierney and Nelson.
Ironically as he comes off, it is the closest Zinchenko has been to the left back position for most of the game.
Mikel Arteta looking to tighten things up after that Chelsea goal.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    72. Gallagher and Mudryk come on for Sterling and Fernandez.
Chance for the January signing to show what he is all about.
On a big pitch like The Emirates his pace and skill is perfectly suited to take on this Arsenal defence.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    70. Saka is trying to walk the ball through the Chelsea defence all too often at the moment.
Arsenal look more effective when they play their slick, one and two touch passing.
Chelsea are standing off them and resisting the press to wait to get the ball back.
    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    68. If Arsenal were allow Chelsea back into this game, they would only have themselves to blame.
The score should be five or six before the visitors scored that goal.
It shows the defensive vulnerabilities of Mikel Arteta’s side that even in a game they are dominating so much, they still concede.

    Arsenal 3-1 Chelsea
    66. Chelsea are thriving on the fact that Zinchenko goes walkabout all too often.
They play a ball over the top down that flank and the Ukrainian is nowhere to be seen.
Madueke gets into the box, hits his shot into the ground and beats Ramsdale in the Arsenal goal.
    Goal – Noni Madueke (Chelsea)
    Arsenal 3-0 Chelsea
    64. Chelsea are trying to get forward more to find a goal that may change their fortunes in this game.
Arsenal are managing to keep them out but the visitors are starting to have glimpses of goal.
    End-to-end stuff at the moment.
    Arsenal 3-0 Chelsea
    62. This is starting to look like a training match for Arsenal.
If they take their chances this could be a hammering for the visitors.
Madueke does well for Chelsea, goes around the keeper but the angle is so tight he can do nothing but try a fizz it across the six yard box.
Arsenal have numbers back and clear.
    Arsenal 3-0 Chelsea
    60. Chelsea come forward for a rare attack.
Sterling crosses towards the back post but Zinchenko wins the header.
That all came from Arsenal giving the ball away in their own half.
    Meanwhile, Frank Lampard contemplates life.

Chelsea player ratings: Aubameyang puts in shocker on return to Emirates as Madueke proves Blues’ only glimmer of hope

CHELSEA fell to their SIXTH straight Premier League loss under caretaker manager Frank Lampard. A double from Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard and a Gabriel Jesus strike saw the Gunners wrap up all three points before half-time.

Chelsea did pull one back but it will another evening to forget for Lampard and his struggling squad.
Here is how Jack Figg rated the Blues from the Emirates.
    Kepa Arrizabalaga – 5
Big save to deny Xhaka one-on-one after five minutes but he was a spectator for Arsenal’s opening three.
Flapped at a second-half corner and needed Silva to save his blushes with a goal-line save.

    Cesar Azpilicueta – 3
Horror evening for the veteran Chelsea skipper, who filled in for the injured Reece James.
The Spaniard was getting drawn out far too often, struggled in the air and offered very little going forward.

    Ben Chilwell – 5
Broke free down left only for Ramsdale to pull off a fine save, but showed he had the beating of Saka.
The left-back did well to keep Saka at bay but looked hesitant to bomb forward like he has been known to.

    N’Golo Kante – 3
Often found himself playing the furthest forward in Chelsea’s midfield but he had little openings.
Caught giving the ball away at times, showing he is not anywhere near back to his best.
    Enzo Fernandez – 4
Spent the entire game on the back foot and not with the ball at his feet.
Came at the cost of playing as the deep-lying midfield but the Blues could profit from the World Cup winner further afield next season.
    Mateo Kovacic – 5
Failed to notice Odegaard over his shoulder for the opener and had little impact on the game.
Usually a player Chelsea can rely on for creativity in advanced positions but did produce a great ball for Madueke’s consolation.
Mateo Kovacic looks on in frustrationCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
    Noni Madueke – 6
In a night to completely forget for Chelsea, the English winger was a standout through urgency alone.
At least Madueke tried to get on the ball, drive and make things happen – rewarded with his excellently taken goal.
    Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 2
Completely absent throughout his dismal 45-minute cameo. No urgency, no fight and no passion with four of his nine touches coming from kick off.
Somehow, he managed to top his woeful showing against Arsenal at Stamford Bridge in November, which saw him exiled from the squad.
    Raheem Sterling – 4
Showed glimpses of promise early on down the left but his team-mates were not in sync, with missed passes to Aubameyang and Chilwell evidence.
Too late to react for Odegaard’s second despite twice looking over his shoulder in a failed attempt to track the Arsenal skipper.

Kai Havertz (for Aubameyang on 45 minutes) – 5
Looked to impose himself after coming on – something Aubameyang could not be bothered to do – but lacked chances to captalise.
Mykhailo Mudryk (for Fernandez on 70 minutes) – 6
Right away the Ukrainian – who so nearly signed for Arsenal – got stuck in with driving runs but never got close to scoring.
Conor Gallagher (for Sterling on 70 minutes) – 5
Came on at a time that the game was already gone and looked about as threatening as Chelsea’s other underperformers.

Hakim Ziyech (for Madueke on 79 minutes) – 4

Arsenal 3 Chelsea 1: Gunners keep Premier League title hopes alive after first-half demolition of dismal Blues

AS Arsenal rose back to the Premier League summit for 24 hours, the most pressing question at the Emirates was ‘Just how low can Chelsea go?’Because how is it actually possible to have spent £600million in a year on a football team as bad as this one?

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal reign was given lift-off by an FA Cup Final victory over Frank Lampard’s Blues in 2020.
And here Arteta was given another major morale boost by Lampard’s Chelsea, whose ill-judged decision to take the interim job has sent his beloved club into an extraordinary tailspin.
Martin Odegaard’s first-half double and a Gabriel Jesus strike had Arsenal done and dusted by half-time as they halted the four-match winless run which will surely cost them the title.
Manchester City, who have two games in hand on Arsenal, will expect to regain top spot at home to West Ham tomorrow – but at least a convenient visit from Chelsea meant that the Gunners’ campaign has not completely fizzled out.

They showed a gutsy reaction to last week’s 4-1 hammering at the Etihad but this had far more to do with Chelsea’s shoddiness than Arsenal’s class.
When Todd Boehly & Co took over last summer, Chelsea were world champions.
But after nine months of chronic mismanagement – and with matches against Newcastle and both Manchester clubs still to come – they could finish as London’s lowest Premier League club and in the bottom six of the final table.
It is no exaggeration to say that if they had sacked Graham Potter a month earlier, Chelsea might have been relegated.

Lampard’s return has been an unmitigated disaster. Six straight defeats and just two goals doesn’t tell the half of it.
As Arsenal ran riot for the opening hour, where was Chelsea’s willingness to track back? To take personal responsibility? To go into challenges as if they at least wished to avoid further embarrassment?
Lampard, playing ‘Frankie bingo dot com’ with his vast squad again, gave Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang his first start in six months, since the last time the Blues faced the Gunners.
Aubameyang won that 2020 FA Cup Final for Arteta – allowing the Gunners boss sufficient credit to ride out a serious storm the following season – yet ended up being spectacularly bombed out after a series of disciplinary breaches.

Arteta handed former Chelsea man Jorginho a first Premier League start in two months, in place of Thomas Partey.
Leandro Trossard also came in for Gabriel Martinelli and Polish centre-half Jakub Kiwior was handed a full league debut in place of Rob Holding, who’d suffered a major Haalanding at the Etihad last week.
For 18 minutes, it was very much as billed – a clash between one thoroughly-demoralised team and one shell-shocked side.
Chelsea sat deep, Arsenal were stodgy, lacking the zip and verve they had possessed for most of the season.

Bukayo Saka had a header pushed out by Kepa Arrizabalaga but the opener arrived like a bolt from the blue.
Xhaka squared a pass which £106million Enzo Fernandez seemed to deliberately allow through his legs and Odegaard netted with a fierce, first-time, left-footed long-ranger which Kepa could only tip on to the underside of the bar.
Chelsea briefly woke up, Ben Chilwell beating Saka to a loose ball and forcing Aaron Ramsdale to turn wide.
But Arsenal might have had a penalty when Wesley Fofana appeared to handle a Trossard shot Fofana handball.

Any sense of injustice was swiftly forgotten when Arsenal doubled their lead just after the half-hour – and Chelsea should have been aware of the drill.
Another square ball from Xhaka, another first-time left-footed shot from Odegaard, this time Thiago Silva and Raheem Sterling appearing to leave marking duties to one another.
It was the Arsenal captain’s 14th goal of an excellent season. Erling Haaland is not the only Norwegian rattling them in this league.

The chants of ‘Chelsea get battered everywhere they go’ had only just begun when Arsenal added a third.
Ben White centred from the right, Jesus won a header, Xhaka had a shot blocked before Jesus turned it in at the back post with four Chelsea players floundering in the vicinity.
Lampard looked almost tearful on the bench – and that was before thousands of home fans started mocking chants of ‘Super Frankie Lampard’.
