Man United boss Erik ten Hag praised by his players for being ‘most fashionable’

MANCHESTER United boss Erik ten Hag is a title winner in the fashion stakes, according to his players. The Dutchman, 53, has been praised for his tailored suits and waistcoats — and his fondness for flat caps has seen him likened to hit TV gangsters The Peaky Blinders.

His stylish look is a far cry from the “club shop chic” of rival Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, who prefers team-crested gear and a baseball cap.
And ex-Leeds manager Jesse Marsch often wore jeans on the sideline.
Some Man United staff were said to have been heard commenting on how “sharp” ten Hag looked as he left the hotel ahead of the club’s recent FA Cup semi-final win against Brighton.
A club insider said: “The manager is always turned out so well, whether it’s his beard or his clothing. We joked he could be a Peaky Blinder with his flat cap.

“It’s a far cry from [ex-manager] Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his tracksuits. We’ve even seen the gaffer at the training ground wearing tweed — all he needed was the shotgun.”
The former Ajax manager lifted silverware for the Red Devils earlier this year, dispatching Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United 2-0 in the final of the League Cup at Wembley.
United lost away at Brighton on Thursday in the Premier League and face West Ham on Sunday.

Julian Nagelsmann ‘has held talks with Premier League club’ and ex-Bayern Munich boss could be appointed this summer

JULIAN NAGELSMANN has reportedly held discussions with Tottenham over their vacant managerial position. Nagelsmann was sacked by Bayern Munich during the most recent international break.
Julian Nagelsmann has reportedly held discussions about the Tottenham jobCredit: Getty
This conveniently coincided with the sacking of Antonio Conte at Spurs.
But with reports suggesting Bayern would demand a fee for him to go to another club before the end of the season due to a clause in his contract, he has not moved elsewhere yet.
Nagelsmann had been linked with the Chelsea job before Frank Lampard took over as interim boss, while Tottenham initially appointed Cristian Stellini before Ryan Mason assumed the role.
Now according to Sky in Germany, Tottenham have held discussions with the German in the last few days over their vacant head coach position.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
The report states Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is “pushing more” to bring Nagelsmann to north London.
The 35-year-old is said to be interested in the job, though no agreements or commitments are in place yet.
This is because Nagelsmann wants to know how much power he would be afforded on transfers if he were to take the role.
Spurs appear to have a clear shot at landing Nagelsmann, with Chelsea no longer considering him for the role.

Instead, Chelsea appear set to appoint Spurs fan-favourite Mauricio Pochettino.
Nagelsmann has also been encouraged to take the “exciting” Spurs job by former Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick, who is also a former mentor of Nagelsmann.
He told Sky Germany: “I think Tottenham is an exciting club in many ways.
“They probably have one of the most modern, beautiful stadiums in the world at the moment.
“They have one of the best training centres, that is there at the moment and Daniel Levy, who has been leading the club for many, many years.
“Although he is not a big spender, he knows the football business and would not put himself in the centre of the cameras.
“If Tottenham really want him, then I think it would be important if a sporting director was still there to support him.
“It can be a very, very exciting story. There is room for improvement, a lot of room for improvement and yet this is not a club where the house expects you to be in the top one or two right away.”
But Nagelsmann is not the only boss being considered for the Spurs gig.

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag reveals transfer budget fears and fires stark warning to squad ahead of crucial West Ham clash

ERIK TEN HAG warned his troops that  sealing a Champions League spot is VITAL for his summer transfer plans.Manchester United are still favourites to claim a top-four finish despite Thursday’s last-gasp defeat at the Amex.

Alexis Mac Allister’s ice-cool 99th-minute penalty sealed Brighton’s 1-0 win  but fourth-placed United  still have a four-point lead over Liverpool with a game in hand.
But that gap could be trimmed on Saturday night to just a point if Jurgen Klopp’s side — on a five-match winning run  — beat Brentford at Anfield.
Ten Hag knows United will be a less attractive option for transfer targets if they are not in Europe’s top competition.
While the Dutchman does not know what his summer budget will be, amid ongoing  uncertainty over a potential takeover,  Champions League football will boost his  financial power in the market.

Asked how crucial that  top-four finish was to United in regards to investment, Ten Hag replied: “It is always vital to be in the Champions League.
“It is a battle because many teams in the Premier League are competing for it.
“We have the power and must fight for it as well. We’ll do everything to get there.
“We want to be in there because we want to challenge  the best teams in the world. So, we do everything that’s in our power to get that done.”

United have the chance to bounce back  tomorrow night   at West Ham.
Ten Hag is confident his men can recover from their Seagulls setback.
The United chief said: “We had quite a good run before Brighton — four wins and a draw from the last five.
“We have everything in our hands so have to focus on our performance. I trust my players. I am quite confident about that top four.”
After the first two games of the season —   humbling defeats by Brighton and Brentford — Ten Hag’s side have followed each of their Premier League losses with a victory.
And the former Ajax boss reckons the Red Devils can repeat the feat against David Moyes’ Hammers.
He said: “Every time  we’ve had a defeat,  we bounced back. I count on my team, we have to do it again.
“There is no time to stay in this. After one hour we move on to the game against West Ham and focus on that.
“We will prepare them and make a good plan.
“The players have to take responsibility and they will do — I count on them.
“They have to do it and  can do it because we have the evidence this season.
His passion is a strength. I just say, ‘Don’t go over the top, stay focused on your game’.Erik ten Hag on Antony
“I am looking forward to it. We played them twice this season  because also we faced them in the FA Cup and it’s going to be another great game.
“Every game is a battle, every game is a challenge. We have to get ready for that.”
Ten Hag defended Antony after he took a wild swipe  at  Mac Allister in the 69th minute, which could have earned a red card, before squaring up to Lewis Dunk.
Antony and Dunk were both yellow-carded by referee Andre Marriner  as Ten Hag quickly hooked the Brazilian.
But backing his winger, Ten Hag added: “His passion is  a strength. You need passion and desire to win your games and win battles in the game.
“It is very strong with him and he is very ambitious.
“I just say, ‘Don’t go over the top, stay focused on your game and what the game needs’. If he does that, he is a great player.”
United will make a late  call on whether Alejandro Garnacho returns from an ankle injury suffered in March.

Asked about his 18-year-old winger, Ten Hag said: “Maybe he can be involved but we’ll see how his progress  goes.”

If Sam Allardyce had stayed at England, I’d have been a Three Lion.. he’s the man to grab Leeds players by the balls

I’M more painfully aware than any other footballer that Sam Allardyce lasted only one match as England manager. That’s because, if Big Sam had been around to name a second England squad, I knew I would have been in it.

Back in 2016, I was in good form for Watford in the Premier League and after Sam’s first match in charge against Slovakia, he’d phoned my club and told them I would be called up to face Malta and Slovenia in World Cup qualifiers.
I can remember it well, we were due to play Burnley and I was told that as long as I didn’t have a stinker, I’d get my first England call-up that week.
But the very next day, Sam quit as England manager after being caught in a newspaper sting.
It was harsh that the FA felt he had to go but, I tell you what, I’d have paid him good money for him to stay in that job for at least another few weeks!
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
I’ve had a better career than I ever expected when I started out, so there are no complaints from me — but to have represented my country would have been a crowning glory.
Despite that disappointment, I’ve always felt very grateful that Sam rated me highly enough to play for England — and I’m delighted to see him back in football at Leeds after a two-year absence.
I know a lot of people laughed when, during his first press conference, he claimed he was “up there” with Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.
I didn’t find it funny. I thought it was brilliant and I was buzzing for him. This is a self-confident man with an excellent CV to back up his words.

If I was a Leeds player, I’d be thinking, “This bloke believes he can get us out of jail, I’m all in”.
My old Watford boss, Javi Gracia, lasted just 70 days in charge at Elland Road.
He is a thoroughly good man who was dealt a bad hand at Leeds.
That is a squad which needs to be grabbed by the balls and there is no one better to do that than Big Sam. I think he can keep them up.
Leeds have four matches to play and the first two are against Manchester City and Newcastle.
But the final two games, at West Ham and at home to Tottenham, are definitely winnable and a couple of victories will probably save them from the drop.
Their midfield is the worst part of Leeds’ team — and there are other bad parts — because they seem to keep signing bang-average American midfielders.
Likewise, striker Georginio Rutter, who joined in a £35million deal and has yet to score a goal.
One of the few exceptions is Willy Gnonto, who should have started more games.
If Leeds go down, the Italian winger is one of the few players who would get a decent Premier League move in the summer.
Big Sam will rely on lads like Adam Forshaw, Luke Ayling and Liam Cooper — if fit — to shore things up.
You can certainly say Sam’s brand of football is very different to Marcelo Bielsa’s high-energy attacking template.
But I disagree with most Leeds fans, who seem to think Bielsa is a great manager. The Argentinian is a short-term boss whose sides lose a lot of exciting matches — but still lose them.
After his first half-season in the Prem, teams started to suss Leeds out and a lot of his players got injured because they were burnt out.
If Sam gets the couple of wins Leeds need, then I think he should stay on next season and make that team difficult to beat.
Most players love managers like Sam because there is no bulls**t.
It’s funny how Premier League clubs keep appointing managers from all over the world and yet, when the chips are down, they turn to tried-and-tested men like Sean Dyche, Roy Hodgson and Sam.

He has seen it all before and will take the air of panic out of the situation at Elland Road.

Jack Grealish reveals Man City’s funniest secrets including worst dressed, longest in shower and best dancer

JACK GREALISH has turned on the tap of Etihad dressing-room secrets. The Manchester City midfielder revealed inside oddities like who takes the longest in the shower.

Grealish also gave himself a drenching, by self-naming and shaming for one of the most unwanted individual descriptions.
Premier League leaders City will go four points clear of Arsenal if they beat lowly Leeds at the Etihad on Saturday.
But just when morale at the club is at its highest, Grealish disclosed some fun titbits to The Mail.
Erling Haaland is of course clocking up goal records on the pitch, with 51 so far this season.

But now he’s been outed as the City player who clocks up the most minutes in the showers.
And Grealish, so twinkle-toed down the wings at the moment, also confessed his own big weakness.
He rates England pal John Stones as the best dancer but himself the worst.
But the former Aston Villa hero did attempt a high-brow excuse.

Grealish reckons much of his time with music is spent as a “multi-genre DJ”.
Perhaps that’s the disc jockey version of Stones as a footballer – someone who can fill different roles depending on the occasion.
Grealish regards Kyle Walker as the “best dressed” player.
He didn’t say, however, if that was partly because the Three Lions’ right-back has more opportunity to contemplate fashion this term as he’s mainly been on the Etihad bench.
The opposite is true of Rodri, who has been so busy out in the middle as the anchorman but is labelled as the worst-dressed star.
Rodri also got a pasting for his music tastes.
Meanwhile, Grealish had the perfect explanation when asked who was the most laid-back in practice.
Singling out City’s iconic playmaker, he said: “Kev (De Bruyne). But he’s just like, you know, because of how good he is on a match day. He’s just chilled in training.” More

Mikel Arteta confirms Arsenal could be without TWO first-choice stars for crunch Newcastle clash due to injury

MIKEL ARTETA has confirmed Arsenal are staring down a defensive injury crisis ahead of their crunch clash against Newcastle. Speaking to reporters ahead of the match, Arteta revealed both first-choice defenders Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba could miss the fixture.

Gabriel was unable to complete the 3-1 midweek victory over Chelsea, being taken off towards the end of the game following an injury complaint.
This prompted fears Arsenal could be without both first-choice centre-backs.
And these concerns could be realised with Gabriel facing a late fitness test to see whether he can feature at St James’ Park on Sunday.
On Gabriel, Arteta said: “We will have to see tomorrow how he is, but he could not finish the game so that was a big sign.”

Saliba has been battling fitness ever since picking up an injury in the club’s Europa League clash with Sporting Lisbon in March.
Arteta revealed on Saliba: “There’s not a lot of progress.
“He’s feeling better every day but he’s not been able to have any activity around the first team so we don’t expect him to be with us [against Newcastle].”
In Saliba’s absence, the North London side have failed to keep a single clean sheet, with this defensive fragility seeing them relinquish their advantage in the title run-in to Manchester City.

Pep Guardiola’s outfit now sit two points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.
However, Arteta is not giving up on the title just yet, and hopes Saliba can boost the squad by returning before the end of the season.
He added: “We are not there yet because we’re always hopeful and players are pushing to play. If that’s the case we’ll announce it, but hopefully not.
“It’s about the healing process, pain-wise and the things he can do off the pitch he’s in a good place, but we have to build that capacity with the right load so that he’s able to contribute to the team.”
Newcastle remain engrossed in the race for the top four, and a win for the Magpies on Sunday will all but end Arsenal’s hopes of lifting the title while significantly boosting their top-four hopes. More

The club’s biggest expenditure so far has been Alexander Isak for £63m from Real Sociedad, and he continues to show plenty of positive signs.
Howe has revealed the club are looking at younger, exciting prospects and not established stars like Ronaldo and Neymar.
The Toon boss said: “A lot of the names aren’t accurate. We need to recruit wisely.
