Forgotten Man Utd keeper signed by Sir Alex Ferguson ‘set for Premier League return in controversial Liverpool transfer’

FORMER Manchester United keeper Ron-Robert Zieler could be set for a return to the Premier League amid interest from Liverpool. The German shot-stopper, 34, left Old Trafford 13 years ago in search of first-team football.

Signing for Man Utd in 2005, Zieler was included in Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad for their League Cup clash against Middlesbrough during the 2008/09 campaign.
But he never made an appearance for the Red Devils and left to join Hannover in 2010.
A short spell back in England with Leicester in 2016 saw him play nine Premier League games.
He then returned to the Bundesliga for a stint with Stuttgart and is now enjoying a second spell at Hannover.

But according to Bild, he could be set for a shock move to Anfield.
That is because Hannover’s ex-sporting director, Jorg Schmadtke, is expected to make the switch to Liverpool.
And Zieler is being heavily linked as his first signing on Merseyside given Schmadtke brought him to Hannover more than a decade ago.
Liverpool are in the market for a back-up keeper to Alisson as their No2 Caoimhin Kelleher is attracting interest from Tottenham, Brentford and Brighton.

The Irishman, 24, has played just 20 matches during his five years under Jurgen Klopp and is now understood to be seeking more game time.
His departure could leave a vacant space for Zieler – who was Joachim Lowe’s third-choice keeper in Germany’s 2014 World Cup-winning squad.
Zieler has one year left on his contract with Hannover after the club triggered an extension in March.
And the club’s sporting director, Marcus Mann, recently said: “Ron has a contract with us, we’re making plans with him.”
But Liverpool will remain confident they can prise him away from the German outfit, particularly if they snatch Champions League qualification.
Klopp’s men sit one point adrift of fourth-place Manchester United in the Premier League table having played one game more.
But they have just three matches to close the gap on the Red Devils – which come against Leicester, Aston Villa and Southampton. More

JOSE MOURINHO has reportedly identified his first signing at Paris Saint-Germain.And the move could tear apart Manchester United’s transfer plans in the process.

Former Red Devils, Chelsea and Tottenham boss Mourinho is being strongly tipped for the PSG job this summer.
Christophe Galtier is expected to be dismissed after a poor showing in the Champions League.
There are also claims of a massive squad fracture, with Lionel Messi set to depart along with world-record signing Neymar, who SunSport understands is another target for United.
And Roma gaffer Mourinho could be the man hired to solve the situation.

According to Foot Mercato, the Special One has already held a meeting with PSG chiefs expressing his desire to join.
Mourinho is also aware they appreciate their former player Thiago Motta, who is in charge at Bologna.
And he has now told PSG about one signing he believes can be a game-changer next term.
It’s claimed Morocco’s World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat is Mourinho’s first target should he get the PSG job.

The talented holding midfielder has been starring for Fiorentina over the past three years.
And Mourinho is so eager for Amrabat to anchor his PSG side that he’s already spoken to the player’s agent.
Amrabat hit headlines at the Qatar World Cup for helping Morocco to an impressive fourth-place finish.
Chelsea made a deadline day bid for him in January when a deal for Enzo Fernandez looked in doubt.
And Liverpool have also expressed interested as Jurgen Klopp plans a midfield revamp.
However, Man United have been leading the race recently in England.
Like Chelsea, they too tried landing Amrabat in January.
And it’s reckoned Erik ten Hag remains keen on a deal this summer, even though the player is believed to favour a move to Barcelona.
Amrabat’s agent said last month: “I can name three clubs who were concrete in the last two or three days of the transfer window.
“Man Utd wanted a loan with an option to buy, Fiorentina rejected.”

However, United may have to look elsewhere for midfield reinforcements should Mourinho and PSG come knocking.
Amrabat is out of contract in 2024 but Fiorentina are reluctant to sell for less than £50million. More

Eriksen’s heart had stopped beating when his team-mates formed a circle around him as medics rushed to the scene and he was carried away to hospital with much of the world in tears.
The 31-year-old has since made an incredible comeback to football, playing for both Brentford and United.
Eriksen has reflected on how that moment changed his life and when he found out what had happened.
He told The Telegraph: “I actually saw it almost the day after it happened, just really to see what happened and get through all the emotions and prepare myself for later.

“But it never gets any easier. You watch it and then you don’t really think about what it is. You just look at it and then that’s it.
“What I’ve personally learnt. is really just enjoy while you’re here and enjoy whatever comes and play football if it’s fun. And if it’s not fun, do something else.”
Eriksen won the World Comeback of the Year accolade at the recent Laureus Sports Awards, but his only real focus is his family.
Partner Sabrina Kvist Jensen, 31, his son Alfred, 5, and daughter, 2, are now the midfielder’s priority.

Eriksen explained: “For me, it’s been a lot more important just coming back and being a person than coming back and doing anything else.
“For me, the first aim was to come back and be a full-time dad and a full-time boyfriend. That, for me, is the most important.”
On his sensational return to the Premier League, the former Spurs ace reveals he had to leave Inter Milan, where he was playing at the time of the collapse, due to Italian football rules.
The Serie A have tough rules on players featuring with a pacemaker as in 2012, footballer Piermario Morosini died while in action for Livorno after suffering a fatal cardiac arrest.
On him leaving the San Siro, Eriksen said: “I knew they had a lot of rules that might prohibit me from playing in Italy.
“And when that contract stopped, then finally I had my answer. I could come back and play football, but somewhere else. So I had to finish with Inter, really it was the only option.”
Eriksen began his comeback with Brentford in 2022 for half a season before moving to Man Utd.
He remain thankful that the Bees gave him a chance: “I had a very good time there, and I will always be grateful to Brentford and Thomas Frank for giving me the chance to come back.
“But also, I told Thomas from the start that if something more exciting comes that I could see myself at a top level that I would go for it. And for me, luckily United came in and that was really it.”

I played at Man Utd with Pogba and Lingard but Sir Alex Ferguson let me go – I got into my car and burst into tears

A FORMER Manchester United youngster has revealed how he got into his car and burst into tears after Sir Alex Ferguson released him.Kenji Gorre, who is now 27, is playing for Portuguese side Boavista and a Curacao international.

Gorre has spoken out about his heartbreaking United exit
But, it could have been so different for Gorre who played at United with Paul Pogba and Jesse Lingard after receiving a two-year scholarship from the club when he was 16.
Gorre, who moved to England from Holland when he was five, spent ten years at United between 2002-2012 but ultimately wasn’t offered a contract by the club.
The left winger has opened up on the highs and lows of his time at United and revealed the conversation with Ferguson that left him in tears in his car.
Speaking on the ThreeSixtyTV series that has just been released, he said: ” My coach Paul McGuinness said to me, ‘The boss wants to speak to you’, and I was like ‘Wow, what’s going on here, I’m going into the office’.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
“So I knocked on the door and Sir Alex says ‘Come on son, come in. Kenji, first of all I appreciate you and I appreciate you as a man. You’ve had an amazing ten years here and I can give you a contract right now, but I know that’s not going to do you any good’.
“And that’s when he started to share with me how there were a lot of guys in front of me. He started naming names like Andreas Pereira, Adnan Januzaj, Nani and all these guys who were ahead of me at that time.
“And then he said ‘I know that you’re not gonna get the game time that you deserve, and I know the quality that you’ve got. This is the right time for you to move on and I want to thank you for your ten years of being here’.”
Following his release Gorre admits that he was left questioning himself and whether he was good enough, felt he didn’t know who he was anymore and that he’d let everybody down.

He said: “I remember shaking his hand and saying thank you so much, and then I shut the door behind me.
“And I remember going downstairs, getting into my car and I just burst out crying. I just let it all out. I remember feeling like I’d let everyone down.
“I’ve let my parents down who have sacrificed their life for me, that’s how it felt. It was so heavy. And I can remember not knowing who I was anymore. What was I gonna tell my friends?
“They knew me as Kenji Gorre, the guy that played for Manchester United, and I’d been that guy from 6 years old. Now I’m 18 and I don’t know who I am.”
Gorre always had his heart set on United despite talks with other clubs.
He said: “My dad mentioned that he spoke to Chelsea, spoke to Arsenal, and they were interested in signing me. But for me, in my heart, I just loved Manchester United.
“I was really happy there and I was going to do everything in my power to stay. And I remember the likes of Jesse Lingard used to come down and play with us, Michael Keane used to come down and play with us. So for us younger guys, our chances were so limited.
“And I remember thinking, ‘Am I gonna get my scholar?’, and I remember when I went into the office with Brian McClair, my dad, my mum, and when we’re there they said ‘we want to offer you a scholarship’, and it was just such a good feeling. Now it’s serious.
“Now I feel like a real professional football player. It was a two-year scholarship that they offered me at the time, and when you’re 18 they’ll assess the situation which is where that will take you.”

Gorre revealed that his time at United was mixed during his two-year scholarship.
He said: ” In the beginning, you come in as a first year and they were signing players so it was difficult to get minutes, but it was also amazing because I was training every day with the world’s best players.

“Paul Pogba was there, Jesse Lingard was there, all these guys I was training with every single day. And it made me into a better player.
“When we were there on scholarship, we used to be there and experience the first team, have lunch with them, interact with them – it was a real eye-opener as well for us, because now we were really getting close to hitting the goals that we set ourselves as kids, to get the dream that we desired from such a young age.
“The training definitely used to be intense. I think the pressure then starts to double, it starts to get amplified. I could see there’s only a couple of months left here, and emotions would really kick in where I was nearly in tears, I wanted it so much.”

Thiago Silva captains the best possible Dream Team XI of 2022/23 – using only players from the bottom half

AS the season draws to a close, it’s only right we shine a light on the Dream Team assets residing in the unfashionable half of the Premier League table. Here we’ve assembled the best possible Dream Team XI, as determined by total season points, using only players who represent clubs currently in the bottom half.
    GOALKEEPER: Kepa Arrizabalaga (£3.2m)
We promise this article isn’t just an elaborate reminder that Chelsea are in the bottom halfCredit: GETTY
The Blues’ No1 is possibly the only Stamford Bridge resident who can call 2022/23 his best season on English shores.
Only four goalkeepers have more points than the Spaniard’s 97 at this stage.
Arrizabalaga has kept 12 clean sheets this season and deserved to usurp Edouard Mendy (£3.2m) as Chelsea’s first-choice custodian.
DEFENDERS: Thiago Silva (£5m), James Tarkowski (£2.6m), Kalidou Koulibaly (£4.4m)
Here’s the thing, while Chelsea have been wasteful and unimaginative in attack, their defensive record is actually rather good.
Even after a flurry of disappointing defeats since Frank Lampard was appointed interim manager, only Newcastle and Man City have conceded fewer league goals this season, hence Koulibaly and Silva’s presence in this XI.
The latter stood out in the first two thirds of the campaign as an unflappable buoy of class amid floundering castaways and held his position among Dream Team’s top ten defenders before an injury caused him to slide down the rankings – he’s currently 18th.
    Most read in Football
Captain of our bottom-half XICredit: GETTY
Everton have struggled all season but they haven’t conceded anywhere near as many goals as the likes of Leeds, Nottingham Forest, Southampton, Leicester and Bournemouth.
Tarkowski is very much a traditional centre-back in that he specialises in penalty-box defending: headers, blocks, clearances.
The 30-year-old has been fighting an uphill battle this campaign but 17 match ratings of 7+ are evidence that his individual efforts have been recognised even though it’s been a mostly miserable year for the Toffees.
MIDFIELDERS: Jarrod Bowen (£4m), Said Benrahma (£3.5m), James Maddison (£5.5m), James Ward-Prowse (£3.4m)
The value of European fixtures on display here.
West Ham have only recently trudged out of the relegation quagmire but they’re still active in the Europa Conference League, a competition both Bowen and Benrahma have utilised superbly.
In fact, the former has earned 37.2% of his points in Europe this term while the latter owes a quarter of his returns to his Thursday night adventures.
West Ham face AZ Alkmaar in a European semi-final first leg on Thursday night
Maddison averages four points-per-game this season which puts him above the likes of Solly March (£4.8m) and Jack Grealish (£5.1m) in the same metric.
Leicester’s No10 has 115 points overall by virtue of ten goals and nine assists – imagine the scramble for his signature if the Foxes are relegated later this month.
And the same could be said for Ward-Prowse with Southampton nailed on for the drop having mustered just 24 points to date.
Saints’ skipper is the Premier League’s ultimate set-piece specialist and 112 points represents a noble effort given his side’s collective performances.
The England international has almost three times as many points as Carlos Alcaraz (£1.6m), Southampton’s next-best midfielder.
FORWARDS: Michail Antonio (£4.1m), Kai Havertz (£3.5m), Rodrigo (£3.3m)
The Hammers’ bullish forward has scored 13 goals in all competitions, a decent return in a side that have struggled in the final third domestically.
Antonio’s tally of 120 points is equal to that of Leandro Trossard (£4m), the pair are joint-13th among forwards in the rankings.
Rodrigo has scored 12 league goals this season
Havertz and Rodrigo are one place back on 102 points each.
The former is clearly a good footballer but he’s simply not prolific enough to lead the line for a club of Chelsea’s ambitions and as he approaches the end of his third season at Stamford Bridge, his role at the club remains loosely defined.
Leeds are now odds-on to return to the Championship having dropped down to 19th place in the table after the latest round of fixtures.
    Read More on The Sun
Much like Leicester, it’s the defence that has caused all the problems as their tally of 44 goals scored is superior to almost every other side in the bottom half – Rodrigo has 12 of those.
From an individual perspective, 2022/23 has been the Spaniard’s best Premier League campaign by a comfortable margin but it seems as if his efforts will be undermined by significant flaws elsewhere in the team. More

To help him keep fit in the future, Saliba has installed a gym in his house.
Some believe the renovation suggests he is settled at the club and that he will stay long-term with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2024.
However, harsher fans have slammed his choice of decoration for the workout room.
Saliba posted a picture of himself in the gym next to a poster of basketball and Chicago Bulls legends Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Dennis Rodman.

But it was the image of Peaky Blinders characters Arthur and Tommy Shelby that got fans raging.
One said: “Glad he’s possibly staying but having Peaky Blinders posters on your walls holy cringe.”

Another suggested via the Daily Star: “Love the bloke but Peaky Blinders fetishisation is a sackable offence.”

Some were kinder, saying: “Thomas Shelby in the background, I like that.”
However, not all fans were convinced Saliba was going to pen a new deal due to his home improvements.
A supporter added: “He’s put a running machine in a shed. I’m not sure this signifies his intention of signing a new contract.”
Saliba has missed Arsenal’s last eight games and Mikel Arteta’s side have only kept one clean sheet in those fixtures.
There is a chance he could not play again this season with Jakub Kiwior and Rob Holding stepping in.
