Southampton RELEGATED from Premier League after woeful 2-0 defeat to Fulham and could set unwanted record for season

AFTER circling the drain for months, Southampton have finally dropped. In front of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Saints became the first club to hit the deck in one of the tightest relegation scraps for years – defeat to Fulham sealing their fate after 11 years in the top flight.

After the Tories took a beating in local elections last week, Sunak must be a glutton for punishment.
Despite not being a St.Mary’s regular, the boyhood Saints fan would have at least felt at home having accepted the club’s invitation.
An old institution burning through three leaders in a year, sliding backwards after more than a decade at the top table – it’s all alarmingly familiar.
Though the Prime Minister stopped short of joining in the gallows humour of home fans chanting: “We’re going down” after four minutes.

The regulars knew this was coming. And, in the end, it was a fitting goodbye from the Saints. A soft performance having rolled over one too many times this season.
There has been little urgency shown by an inexperienced and confusingly assembled squad all season – so why start now?
Carlos Vinicius and Aleksandar Mitrovic delivered the coup de grace on Southampton’s season but this moment had been coming for months.
Ruben Selles is the third Saints manager of the campaign and after a promising start has been unable to aid this sinking ship.

Selles has continually shuffled the pack in search of a miracle to keep Southampton up.
Towering striker Paul Onuachu, signed in January to add much needed goals, was the name pulled out of the hat this time.
He was handed just a fourth start having been dropped from the squad altogether at times under Selles.
The 6ft 7in striker was largely ineffective throughout, another reminder of the muddled season Southampton have endured.
Onuachu was a striker signed in January for Nathan Jones, who was sacked just days later after just three months in the job.
Things are very different for the club from the banks of the Thames, and the Fulham fans enjoyed a day in the sun on the south coast.
Marco Silva named Mitrovic on the bench following the end of his eight-week ban, a sign of just how comfortable the promoted side are at this stage of the season.
Fulham have been safe for weeks but it was Southampton who looked like they were on the beach despite knowing they simply had to win their last three to stand a chance of surviving.
There were cries for a penalty when Brazilian defender Lyanco appeared to handle a cross, though referee Thomas Bramall and VAR Tony Harrington did not agree.
Lyanco was then forced to clear off the line as Willian looked to dip a volley into the top corner.
They were holding out at the back but too pedestrian in possession, a common problem all season.
Selles tried to fire them up at the break, but the first three minutes of the second half offered a perfect summary of their sorry season.

The final nail was hammered in by the returning Aleksandar MitrovicCredit: PA
Carlos Alcaraz fired a low effort past Bernd Leno, though the goal was ruled out as a poor run had taken the midfielder well offside before he had been played in.
Then moments later they were behind.
Sloppiness at the top reflected at the back. Southampton’s defence has more leaks than Number 10 and Fulham exploited them with ease.
Harry Wilson drove forwards and slipped in former Saint Harrison Reed. He had to slide to reach the ball before Lyanco but managed to hook it across the six-yard box to Carlos Vinicius, who was unmarked and facing an empty net.
To make matters worse, Mitrovic then made his long awaited return.
The striker was welcomed to huge cheers by the away end, many waving Serbian flags, and he rewarded them with a goal on 72 minutes, getting across Kyle Walker-Peters to head home Wilson’s cross.
And that was it for Southampton. The stands emptied as their fate was sealed.
Their fans now just have two more Premier League games to witness, at Brighton and here against Liverpool, before they go back to the Football League for the first time since 2012.
Two more games to see icon James Ward-Prowse in their red and white before he surely departs, leaving behind a club he loves and has fought for with so many problems to tackle over the summer.
Others will be plucked from a squad which offered much promise on paper but has never looked like delivering in the real world, their limp surrender here today is prime evidence of obvious shortcomings.
Sporting director Rasmus Ankersen, absent from the directors’ box as he has often been in recent months, once said: “If it ain’t broke, consider breaking it.”

This marked Lampard’s first victory as caretaker boss during a poor second stint with the club as he lost all of his first six matches with the West Londoners.
But the 44-year-old tactician is currently dealing with a major absence against Nottingham as he is without Kante.
Chelsea’s record goalscorer revealed the midfielder sustained an injury during training on Friday.
And the ex-Everton boss suggested the France international will be sidelined for two weeks.

Lampard said during his pre-match interview: “We lost N’Golo in training yesterday.
“He felt something in his groin, so that’s probably a couple of weeks and we know what that means pretty much.”
This adds to Kante’s injury woes this season, which have led to Chelsea being deprived of his services throughout most of the campaign.
The 32-year-old sustained a hamstring injury during pre-season and was out until April.

Jones was sacked by the Saints after just 14 games with the club at the bottom of the Premier League.
During his short tenure, he caught a lot of attention with his answers in press conferences as he suggested he had “compromised on principles” while at the club.
He also claimed he was one of the best managers in Europe, despite losing most of his games.
When asked if he would have kept Southampton in the Premier League, he told Sky Sports: “That is something that whatever I answer, it is a bit of a loaded question.

“I believe in the work we do, but it is very difficult to turn around and say that because the last thing I want is another headline.

On his next job, Jones admitted that he is hoping to have a long-term spot at one club so he can “build”.

He said: “I’m a builder. I like to be at places for a long time.
“Ironically, I believe that our work is deep and not just results based, if you look at my previous club we built something that was not dependent on a manager.
“I don’t like to chop and change, if I do choose a project or one comes for me, then it is one that I have to be able to do good work in.”
When asked if Luton were “massively different” to when he left the club, Jones replied: “No, I don’t at all.
“I think there will be subtle changes, the formation, the personnel and the types of clean sheets. It was just based on structure.”
And fans were left in disbelief at the Welshman’s answers, as one fan sarcastically said: “Wait if he had won games he would have kept them up? The guy’s a genius.”
Another declared: “You don’t get the results. You get the sack. There is no ifs, buts, maybes. You didn’t get the results and you got the sack.”
A third joked: “If my grandmother had wheels she would have been a bike.”
A fourth said: “But he didn’t get results an alienated the fan base with his comments , even Luton don’t miss him.”
A fifth tweeted: “This guy is unreal 🤣 if I got the results just wth as you didn’t get the results if he was as good as he tries to claim he would have got the results.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks tense as he watches Man Utd vs Wolves in first return to Old Trafford since sacking

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER returned to Old Trafford today for the first time since he was sacked as manager of Manchester United. The club legend was axed as manager back in November 2021 and had not been seen since at the ground where he made his name.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made his Old Trafford return
But he has turned up there today for the game against Wolves.
Ahead of the match, Solskjaer said: “I have not been back since then. It will be the first time for me.”
He clearly still finds it tough recalling his exit after a 4-1 defeat at Watford back in November 2021.
He said: “There are only two times when I have cried as a grown man.

“The first was after my testimonial because that was emotional and a year and a half ago when I had to leave, so that’s the two times when I’ve cried.
“Man United, it does something to you.”
The biggest welcome will undoubtedly come from his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson for whom Solskjaer revealed sentiment was not always a big thing.
He said: “The day I left I bought him this special bottle of wine and he said you didn’t have to do that son, thank you very much, you have my number you know where I am see you later.

Sir Alex Ferguson was sat a few rows in front of Solskjaer
“Bang that’s it. No sentiment there but that is the way he had to manage. He didn’t want to show his feelings with us. As a Manchester United manager you have to let players go when it’s your time to go it’s your time and he showed it straight, it was bang.”
Although Solskjaer has revealed he could have been gone long before after the club accepted an offer from Tottenham for him ahead of the 1998-99 treble season which he capped with the winning goal in the Champions League final.
Sir Alex knew it would be a mistake to let him go and encouraged him to reject the move, but ordered him not to tell anyone he had told him to do so.
He said: “I have a fax with Sir Alan Sugar’s name on it, Martin Edwards and a £5.5million transfer fee. The gaffer brought me into his office and said the clubs have agreed. I don’t want to sell you. If you stay here I am sure you will play enough games but you can’t say to me or anyone else that I have convinced you to stay.”
Speaking at “An Evening with Ole Solskjaer” in a central Manchester hotel on Friday night the club legend also revealed how being a neighbour of the boss during his time as a player lead to some strange extra duties.
He said: “You don’t want to let him down, he’s a father figure to me.
“He lived next door to me practically too and that was horrible.
“Sometimes he forgot his racing post or his suit and he rang me and said ‘have you left yet’ and I said ‘no’ so I had to go via Kathy and get his suit or racing post.

Howe, 45, appeared to be shoved by the intruder before security arrived on the scene.
The Leeds supporter was then finally caught by stewards, who subsequently led him away.
He appeared to still be aggravated as he was removed by security, seemingly shouting at something.
Following the altercation, the fan was arrested an issued with a lifetime ban.
Asked about the incident after the match, Howe told BT Sport: “That was a real suprise.
“I was concentrating on the game, and that’s the last thing that you would expect to happen.”
He then added: “I can’t actually remember whether he pushed me or not, I’ve got no idea.
“It was just such a strange thing. You’re concentrating on the game, it’s not something you expect to happen.

“He confronted me, he said something that I can’t repeat, then he’s led away. I think that’s what happened.
“Someone might tell me different. I’m okay.
“But I think moments like that do make you think. The safety of staff, players, is paramount for me in the Premier League or any matches in the Football League. We need to be mindful. Security is so important.”
Asked if he felt fear, Howe added: “I don’t know if I had time to be fearful, to be honest, because it was over in a flash.
“It certainly makes you think, what ifs. Moments like this should hopefully make people analyse things and see how we can improve safety for staff and players.”
The Toon boss then concluded: “Those types of situation, no-one should have to face that, playing a sport they love and trying to entertain the country. No-one should have to feel their own personal safety is violated. It’s something for us to reflect on.”
The supporter, clad in a beige hoodie and blue jeans, provided a brief distraction in what was a frenetic Premier League clash.
Sam Allardyce’s side had taken a surprise lead on just seven minutes, when Luke Ayling pounced from close range to score.
Patrick Bamford missed the opportunity to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot, seeing his tame shot saved by Nick Pope.
He was quickly made to pay, with Callum Wilson twice showing him how it’s done from 12 yards to put Howe’s men in front.
Leeds were able to salvage a point, however, with Rasmus Kristensen’s 79th minute shot deflecting in off Kieran Trippier.
The 2-2 draw saw Allardyce’s side miss the chance to climb out of the bottom three.

Yorke, 51, scored 29 goals in 48 games in the unprecedented season, forming a formidable partnership with Andy Cole.
His tally included EIGHT in Europe as he finished as the joint-top scorer in the Champions League alongside Andriy Shevchenko.
But, after bagging 23 goals in the following campaign, his form began to deteriorate.
In the next two seasons, he managed just 13 goals in 54 matches.
