Gunners’ fans need focus on positives
Before the start of the season, no Arsenal fans or coaches were planning on winning the Premier League.

Arsenal have achieved that, while playing a brand of football that has impressed everyone this campaign.
This is something to build on, now the need is to replicate it next season.

Arsenal 0 Brighton 3: Gunners’ title race over with a whimper as ill-tempered loss leaves Man City one game from glory

IT has looked like a fool’s errand for a few weeks now, but Arsenal’s vain pursuit of the Premier League crown is all but finished after this desperate home defeat.  Manchester City will surely clinch their fifth title in six seasons next weekend, after the concession of soft goals to Julio Enciso, Deniz Undav and Pervis Estupinan summed up a shoddy and irritable display from Mikel Arteta’s men.

City will be confirmed as champions if they beat Chelsea at home next Sunday – but their coronation could arrive a day earlier if Arsenal lose at Nottingham Forest.
Arteta’s side had been magnificent for the vast majority of this season but their lack of experience and squad depth has cost them in a run of just two wins from their last seven games.
Brighton, who have now won on four of their last five visits to the Emirates, are well on course to qualify for Europe for the first time in their history.
And although the match was ill-tempered and ragged, Brighton deserved their victory.

If last Sunday’s impressive win at Newcastle had renewed Arsenal’s hope, then City’s emphatic victory at Everton earlier in the day was another sobering example of the problem with this title race – City are just too damned good.
Brighton had suffered an extraordinary 5-1 home defeat against the Toffees but they put that right here and look nailed-on for a place in the Europa League next season.
The violent opening exchanges looked like highlights from the infamous 1970 FA Cup Final between Chelsea and Leeds, it was punctuated by fouls and injury stoppages, with the ball pretty much an afterthought.
Martin Odegaard was poleaxed by a ball in the face from Estupinan, Gabriel Martinelli floored Kaoru Mitouma with a flying body-charge, which was avenged when Moises Caicedo caught the Arsenal winger on the ankle.

Ref Andrew ‘Truly Madly’ Madley opted for appeasement, failing to show a yellow card when he might have dished out half a dozen.
Martinelli eventually limped off, replaced by former Albion man Leandro Trossard.

During the occasional outbreaks of football, Aaron Ramsdale pushed wide a rising effort from Enciso and Gabriel Jesus was denied by Jason Steele’s boot when he tried to sneak one in at the near post.
Brighton’s desire to play out from the back looked more like an obsessive compulsive disorder than a game-plan and Arsenal were having some joy by pressing Brighton high and and forcing a string of mishaps.
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, who makes Arteta look like the Dalai Lama, was in a permanent stage of rage, kicking his seat.
Trossard was soon cutting in from the left and clattering a shot against the bar.
Madley finally got his yellow card in the 34th minute to caution Estupinan for the most innocuous foul of the lot.
The officiating was then summed up by assistant Constantine Hatzidakis – the man who clobbered Andy Robertson – flagging for an offside against Arsenal direct from a throw-in.
Mitoma toasted Ben White and centred for Enciso to blaze over when he ought to have scored – but Bukayo Saka pinged a shot narrowly wide in injury-time.
Frustrations were rising around the Emirates even before Brighton scored an incredibly soft opener on 51 minutes.
Etupinan’s initial cross was headed out by Kieran Tierney but when the Ecuador full-back scuffed his second effort, Arsenal centre-half Jakub Kiwior had gone down clutching his ankle, allowing Enciso score from close range with a free header.
Arteta hauled off his central midfield duo of Jorginho and Granit Xhaka, sending on Thomas Partey and Reiss Nelson, while De Zerbi was positive in introducing former Gunner Danny Welbeck as an extra forward.
Arteta was booked for gobbing off and he wasn’t the only Arsenal man lacking composure as a succession of attacks broke down in the final third.
After Alexis Mac Allister had fizzed a shot wide, Arteta made a desperate double substitution, replacing Odegaard and Jesus with Emile Smith-Rowe and Eddie Nketiah.
But Brighton’s second goal was as avoidable as the first from Arsenal’s point of view.

Arsenal ratings: Xhaka tries to get Gunners going but Ben White has torrid time as Mitoma tears him apart

ARSENAL looked far from title challengers as they suffered just their second home defeat of the season to Brighton. The Gunners had given their title push a lifeline with a fighting win at Newcastle last Sunday, but a week on they looked fatigued and lacked ideas.

Ben White was given the runaround by Kaoru MitomaCredit: Reuters
Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka tried in vain to make things happen as Roberto De Zerbi’s side dominated throughout.
Jorginho, picked for his range of passing and composure in possession, was anonymous and offered little by way of protection for the back four.
While former Seagull Ben White had a torrid afternoon up against speedy winger Kaoru Mitoma.
The right-back was found wanting for Brighton’s goal, as was Jakub Kiwior.

And Mikel Arteta’s side did not offer much in response going forward.
Leandro Trossard, signed from Brighton in January, came closest to scoring after replacing Gabriel Martinelli early on but Jason Steele had a surprisingly quiet afternoon between the sticks.
Here is how SunSport’s Kealan Hughes rated the Gunners’ performance on a disappointing day in North London…
BETTING SPECIAL – BEST SPORTS BETTING APPS IN THE UK
    Aaron Ramsdale – 5
One smart stop to keep out Julio Enciso early on and could do nothing about his goal.
    Most read in Football
He was lobbed for the second and poorly palmed away Deniz Undav’s strike to Pervis Estupinan, who made no mistake as he added Brighton’s third.
    Ben White – 3
Beaten far too easily by Mitoma who set up a chance that Enciso should have buried.
He did not learn his lesson as he was caught out by a long ball and Mitoma fed Estupinan who crossed for Enciso to score.
    Jakub Kiwior – 4
Was bullied by Evan Ferguson at times and failed to help White deal with Mitoma.
Went down injured and lost Enciso for the goal – a strange spell of defending.
    Gabriel – 6
A little awkward with the ball but the best of Arsenal’s defenders today.
    Kieran Tierney – 5
Anonymous first half. Poor header to clear Estupinan’s cross, which allowed the left-back to try again and set-up the opener.
    Jorginho – 3
Struggled to impose himself on the ball and give Arsenal a foothold in a match where they struggled to retain possession.
Was hooked on the hour mark with Mikel Arteta opting for Thomas Partey to provide more intensity.
    Granit Xhaka – 6
Should have done better with a first-half header from a Trossard free-kick which he put wide.
He got Arsenal going and played an invaluable role in breaking up Brighton’s passing play.
    Martin Odegaard – 5
Came very close to scoring another long-range effort similar to his daisy-cutter at St James’ Park.
Was man-marked throughout by Levi Colwill and that nullified his influence on the game.
    Bukayo Saka – 6
Lively start and caused Pervis Estupinan problems by cutting in on his left foot.
Had a brilliant chance to open the scoring in added time at the end of the first half but fired his shot wide.
Faded as the match wore on – fatigue appears to have set in after a long season.
    Gabriel Martinelli – 5
Only lasted 19 minutes but had an eventful spell.
He was lucky to avoid a red card for an elbow on Kaoru Mitoma before going down injured under a ‘revenge’ tackle by Moises Caicedo.
    Gabriel Jesus – 5
Some useful link-up play but found space hard to come by with Lewis Dunk and Colwill keeping a close eye on him. Had a first-half shot saved.
Otherwise ineffectual as he has been in recent weeks.
    Subs
    Leandro Trossard (for Martinelli, 19mins) – 5
Very unlucky not to score shortly after coming on – he tiptoed into the box before striking the top of the bar.
Should have done better when he fired straight at Steele and he gave away the ball in the lead up to Brighton’s second goal.
Reiss Nelson (for Xhaka, 60 mins) – 6
Injected some energy into the Gunners and fizzed a shot narrowly wide moments after coming on.
Thomas Partey (for Jorginho, 60 mins) – 6
Stopped Brighton’s fluidity in midfield – a good change by Arteta when Arsenal were crying out for a foothold in the game.
    Read More on The Sun
    Eddie Nketiah (for Jesus, 77mins) – 6
Also looked lively after coming on and linked up well with Nelson. Should have been brought on earlier.
Emile Smith Rowe (for Odegaard, 77 mins) – 5
Did not have much of an impact as he is still not match fit. More

Haaland broke the all-time Premier League scoring record in the 3-0 win over West Ham at the start of the month.
And, unsurprisingly, Haaland netted yet again in Sunday’s win at Goodison Park.
The Norwegian striker headed past a diving Jordan Pickford for his 52nd strike in all competitions this campaign.
So that meant his boots needed an update.

Arsenal fans fume as Kiwior ‘stops to put his boot on’ to let Brighton score – but others claim VAR should rule it out

January signing Kiwior racked up another start at the expense of Rob Holding as Arsenal hosted Brighton at the Emirates.
The Gunners knew a win was necessary to keep their title hopes realistically alive.
But after a drab 0-0 in the first half, it was Brighton who eventually drew first blood.
Julian Enciso nipped into the box to fire past Aaron Ramsdale after 51 minutes.

Yet it was Kiwior who drew the ire of Arsenal fans after appearing to stop in his tracks during play.
The centre-back looked to slightly stumble before going to one knee and adjusting his boot.
At the same time, Enciso picked up the ball before slotting it into the net for 1-0.
But while some fans slammed Kiwior for messing around with his shoe, others defended the Pole by claiming he appeared to be stamped on – and therefore VAR should have ruled out Brighton’s strike.

One said: “Embarrassing from Kiwior. Fully deserved for Brighton.”

One noted: “Kiwior’s ankle was stepped on from behind and he was on the ground literally a foot away from Enciso as he headed it in. How unaware can VAR get?”
Another added: “Kiwior gets stepped on! VAR no goal!”
Things got worse for Arsenal when Denis Undav put Brighton 2-0 up in the 86th minute.
And Pervis Estupinan ensured the result was a rout with a third in the 96th minute.
The result leaves the Gunners four points behind leaders Man City, who beat Everton 3-0 earlier today and still have a game in hand.

Roy Keane continues vendetta against goalkeepers as he brutally destroys Jordan Pickford with just two words

Keane was left less than impressed as England’s No1 shipped three goals in a heavy defeat to Man City.
Two glorious strikes from Ilkay Gundogan sandwiched an effort by Erling Haaland.
And Pickford left little to be desired as he failed to deal properly with all three shots.
His performance between the sticks certainly incensed Keane, who has not been shy about criticising fellow goalie David de Gea this term.

And he unleashed a brutal blast at the stopper by using just two simple words to disagree with an earlier assessment made by fellow pundit Micah Richards.
Keane said: “Pickford, for the goal… my goodness.

It’s not the first time Keane has gone after a goalie this season.

Five Southampton stars that could be pilfered in summer transfer window with one ‘already eyed by top six’

The Saints spent big last summer as they looked to recruit some of the most exciting young stars from around Europe.
But. already. that crop, along with more established Southampton talent, are being linked away from the Championship-bound side.
SunSport has looked at which players could be set to leave St Mary’s this summer after a chaotic season on the south coast.

He has made 124 more league appearances than any other player at the club since they were promoted in 2012, and scored the most goals with 48.
It would pain fans to see the midfielder go but some Premier League clubs will view the 28-year-old as too good for the Championship.
His tenacious midfield work, passing ability and infamous skill from dead ball situation would make him a welcome addition to plenty of top-flight teams.
Crystal Palace and Leeds have been linked to Ward-Prowse.

    Romeo Lavia
Romeo Lavia was a £10.5m signing last summer and was among the many bodies who arrived at the club in pre-season.
While some of those players have done themselves no favours, Lavia’s reputation has grown and he has proven to have a consistent impact in Southampton’s midfield.
The 19-year-old former Manchester City youth player has made 27 Premier League appearances this season, with his only goal being a belter against Chelsea in August.
The Blues, Manchester United and Arsenal could all be keeping an eye on the teenager this summer.
    Carlos Alcaraz
With Ralph Hasenhuttl dismissed in November, and his replacement Nathan Jones failing to revive the Saints’ fortunes, the club turned desperately to the January window.
Carlos Alcaraz joined in a £12.3m deal from Argentine side Racing Club and has impressed in his 18 league appearances, where he has scored four goals.
One of those strikes came within the opening minute at the Emirates where he was Southampton’s star man in last month’s epic 3-3 draw.
Pundit Owen Hargreaves is a fan of the 20-year-old and told Premier League Productions: “You know what, he’s fabulous. He’ll probably go to a top-six side.
“The only one who had an impact from January was Alcaraz, he is fantastic.”

Not too many football fans thought much of Southampton’s £8.6m signing of Armel Bella-Kotchap from VfL Bochum last summer.
But the 21-year-old has proven to be capable beyond his years and received regular praise earlier in the season for his mobile and alert defending.
The centre-back still has over three years left on his deal so Southampton will be under little pressure to sell.
But top-flight clubs may look to take advantage of the Saints’ relegation and tempt the impressive defender away.
    Tino Livramento

It has been a frustrating year for Tino Livramento who has been out injured with a cruciate ligament rupture since April 2022.

When the 20-year-old is fully fit, he may view the Championship as a good training ground to recapture his best form.
But if he can recover from his setback this summer, crafty Prem clubs may remember that the speedy star has excelled in the top-flight and could be worth a gamble. More
