Carlos Tevez tells heartbreaking story of alcoholic uncle to explain why he refused to learn English at Man Utd and City

CARLOS TEVEZ has revealed he refused to learn English during his seven years in the Premier League because of his “cultural problem” with the British. The former Manchester United and Manchester City striker said he decided early on that if anyone wanted to speak to him they should learn Spanish.

And the ex-Argentina star, who also played for West Ham, cited his uncle’s descent into alcoholism after a Falklands War call-up – which put paid to his hopes of becoming a professional footballer – as the reason for his own unwillingness to adapt to English culture.
Tevez, who famously complained on Argentinian TV when he was still Blues captain that everything about Manchester was bad, told a radio interviewer in his homeland over the weekend: “I had a cultural problem with the English.
“I didn’t want to learn English, I wanted them to learn Spanish.
“I have an uncle who played in River Plate. He’s the only River supporter in my family.

“He played in the reserve team and when he was going to make his debut with the first team, he got called up to fight in the Falklands War.
“He suffered after that and became an alcoholic. That marked me a lot because he was very close to me.”
Opening up on his feelings about England on DSportsRadio, the 39-year-old added: “The seven years I spent in England were: ‘Okay, I’m here for work but I’m not getting used to English culture’. Everything has a reason.
“Very few people know this story but today I can tell it.

“You want to speak to me. Then you learn Spanish, because I’m not going to learn English.”
Fellow Argentinian Pablo Zabaleta urged Tevez to improve his English for the good of the team when they were both at Manchester City after the striker moved from their city rivals United.
The Buenos Aires-born defender said in October 2009 after becoming fluent in English a little over a year after his arrival in the UK: “Carlos tries sometimes to speak English.
“I said to him he needs to come to me for lessons. I didn’t speak English before but I learned it here. When I arrived I could not say anything. I got English lessons once a week.
“It’s important because we need to speak with team-mates and managers. And we are living in England for the future so my English is getting better.”
Tevez’s reluctance to learn the language was one of the criticisms levelled at him when he was still at Old Trafford.
He escaped punishment for a serious motoring offence in September 2011 because his English was so poor he could not read the penalty notice sent to him.
Tevez, manager of top flight Argentinian side Rosario Central until late last year, made his feelings about Manchester abundantly clear when he was interviewed on one of his country’s leading TV shows while he was still captain of Manchester City in June 2011.
He moaned he couldn’t wait to leave the city for good and claimed the area had “nothing”.
Susana Gimenez, the Argentine Oprah Winfrey who interviewed him, pointed out another South American celeb – model Evangelina Anderson – had bought a house in the sunkissed Spanish resort of Marbella.
Tevez laughed as he replied: “Yes but Marbella is different from Manchester. You can buy a holiday house in Marbella. But I’m never going back to Manchester, not even on holiday, not for anything.
“Of course I would buy a house in Marbella.”
Asked if it was just the weather that made Manchester so bad, Tevez replied: “The weather, everything. It has nothing.

“For example in Marbella you can buy a house by the beach, relax there and later you can go there on holiday and everything.
“But a house in Manchester? On top of that a house in Manchester costs six or seven million pounds. Pounds! It’s better to rent and that’s that.” More

The 56-year-old claimed “it hurts” Tyler to see Arsenal win a game of football, while he suggested Neville “has a problem”.
Keown told Jim White and Simon Jordan: “How biased is the Sky Sports commentary team? It is frightening.
“Martin Tyler is a great professional, but he cannot hide that it hurts him that Arsenal might win a game of football.
“Honestly, we know Neville has a problem, he is almost apologising.

“‘Have I lost my mind? We should be sending [Gabriel] Martinelli off’? Not at all, you go with your instinct.
“So, there we are, it is a poke in the eye to a commentator. I should be more respectful, Martin is a great commentator, but please Sky, don’t put him on the Arsenal games anymore. It is a really hard listen.
“We talked about it off air and certain people were pushing me to say it. I didn’t really want to come here with that.”
Host White hit back by saying: “Nobody pushed you to say it.”

With Jordan, adding: “You lassoed me out there asking about Martin Tyler and Gary Neville.”
Keown responded: “Tell me then, get the Arsenal fans as they’ve got to listen to it. There’s only 60,000 in the stadium but there’s millions of us at home.”
Asked to say certainly whether he believed Neville to be anti-Arsenal, Keown declared: “Yes I do, let’s get it out there.”
Despite having his doubters for much of the season, Neville was insistent in his belief Arsenal would not win the title – providing seven reasons why it all went so wrong for them during the run-in.
And following the 3-0 defeat to Brighton, which marks a run which has seen Arsenal win just two of their last seven league games, Manchester City are now on course to wrap up the title next week.
The Gunners know a loss at Nottingham Forest will see the title go to City, while City can secure the title regardless of the Gunners’ result with a win against Chelsea.
A horror stat has also emerged relating to the North Londoners title plight, with Mikel Arteta’s side on top for 93 per cent of the season.
This is a new record, eclipsing Arsenal’s own record from the 2002/03 season when they were top for 71 per cent of the campaign before losing out to Manchester United. More

And it was the late final goal that led to Seagulls boss De Zerbi racing down the touchline to celebrate.
Mourinho famously did the same as his then Porto team beat Manchester United in 2004 on their way to lifting the Champions League.
And when asked about it afterwards, De Zerbi said: “Mourinho is a great manager but I have this character. This passion is my own.”
Reacting to the kneeslide, one fan commented: “De Zerbi doing his Mourinho touchline run impression at the Emirates.”

Meanwhile Brighton are sixth and just four points behind fifth-placed Liverpool with a game in hand.
Undav revealed afterwards that their Italian manager had shown the squad a video of Basketball legend Michael Jordan following last week’s surprise 5-1 home loss to Everton.
De Zerbi said: “The most important part to improve is the mentality.
“The defeat against Everton started when we won against Manchester United.
“We didn’t forget the victory but now against Newcastle we have to forget we played in Arsenal’s stadium and we won there.
“Otherwise, we will lose at Newcastle. One hundred per cent.”
Speaking after the setback, Arsenal boss Arteta said: “I hate the feeling of letting people down when they are expecting something. That’s the biggest regret I have today and I have to apologise for that.
“What the team has done over the last 10 months is very different to what anybody expected and that generates a lot of expectation as well enthusiasm, happiness and joy.
“That’s something that has to be managed in the right way. We have the responsibility to make sure the team performs and I am responsible for that.” More

The graphic claims the Norwegian has scored the most Premier League goals in one season by a midfielder, not including penalties.
Odegaard has netted 15 times, with none of his strikes coming from the spot this term.
Sky claim it puts him ahead of the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Paul Scholes, Yaya Toure and Frank Lampard.
However, TWO players have been bizarrely missed off the graphic.

Ex-Spurs star Dele Alli netted 18 goals in the 2016/17 season, with just one penalty goal.
And Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier scored 25 times during the 1993/94 campaign, with six strikes coming from 12 yards.

It means both Alli and Le Tissier should be ahead of Odegaard, leaving fans raging.

Another reacted: “Bias as per usual.”
Others speculated it was because Alli and Le Tissier both played close to strikers that year and could be classed as forwards or second strikers.
