The World Cup winner’s contract is expiring after two years in the French capital.
And Barcelona are hoping to seal a stunning return.
But Messi is also thought to have received a world-record salary offer from Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal.

Pochettino’s bizarre methods include lemons to absorb negative energy, walking on hot coals and rating players’ auras

MAURICIO POCHETTINO is set to return to the Premier League with Chelsea and will bring his bizarre methods of success with him. The former Tottenham boss has agreed terms to take over at Stamford Bridge with an announcement expected to follow.

Pochettino will replace Frank Lampard next month after the club legend took interim charge following Graham Potter’s sacking.
The Argentine has six years worth of Premier League experience following his time with Southampton and then Spurs.
But it was in North London where Pochettino really made his name and his methods known.
So here, SunSport runs exactly how the former centre-back got the best out of his players.

    Fruit loop
Pochettino keeps a tray of lemons in his office, after a friend told him the sour fruit absorbs negative energy.
He told talkSPORT in 2019: “They are there to get rid of bad energy.
“Some people arrive with bad energy and that goes into the lemons. It’s like a barrier, a sponge.
“They take away all the negativity and you can see — it’s unbelievable!

    Sense of aura
Pochettino is no different when it comes to using new-school data and analytics to judge players – but he also uses the old-fashioned eye test.
Writing in his book, Brave New World, he said: “I need data and tests, but what most influences my decisions is my ability to see if the right energy is flowing.
“I can foresee things that are going to happen and the associated consequences, or which path each player is going to take.
“I can see it in their auras.”

    Coal calling
During his five years with Spurs, Pochettino’s greatest success was leading the club to the Champions League final in 2019.
They were beaten by Liverpool in a result that must have burned – having prepared for it by walking over hot coals.
Pochettino said at the time: “All of them were unbelievably involved. They enjoyed it a lot.
“They were all very brave. And the staff who did it too. Your mind is powerful and only you set your limits.”
He also used the task during his time with Southampton.

    Snap out of it
The daring tasks did not stop there as Pochettino also had his players snapping arrows against their throats before the European final.
He explained: “When you see the arrow, you think ‘it’s impossible, how am I going to break the arrow against my throat?’
“You say: ‘No, come on, I am going to kill myself.’ You put it with the sharp tip against your throat but then, bang, you come forward and break the arrow.
“The most important thing is to learn how you can prepare your mind. To be focused. To be proactive. This is the key in football.”

    Gacon test
Not all of Pochettino’s methods are madness, others and tried and tested, including relying on fitness.
The manager has been known to favour lots of running in training, using a gruelling intermittent shuttle run called the Gacon test.
Pochettino revealed in his book: “To start with, the players have 45 seconds to cover 150 metres, with 15 seconds to rest.
“In each subsequent 45-second rep, they have to run 6.25 metres further, with the intensity steadily increasing.”

Daz the way to do it
Chelsea stars ought to be careful when weaving amongst the supermarket aisles… Poch is watching.
    Or should that be “smelling”?
Pochettino chooses the exact washing powder he wants to be used to wash the first-team kit.
Apparently, he thinks the smell is important for game-day.

    Smile for the camera
Danny Rose revealed his former boss recorded everything from training to individual highlights, tracking and tracing his stars.
Per The Telegraph, Rose said: “He’s very thorough, very precise, he’s a disciplinarian. He records training.
“He was the first manager I came across who records training, records gym sessions. There’s no hiding places.
“There was one game, we played Crystal Palace, and I thought I had a good game.
“He called me into his office the next day to analyse the game. I thought there were going to be some good clips.
“He had 26 bad clips of what I did wrong. That’s how he is as a manager.”

    Fine by me
Pochettino is lenient when it comes to penalising his squad and chooses not to impose harsh fines on his squad.
But respect is imperative and players will be expected to address co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali with a “hello” or handshake.
Pochettino said in 2016: “In the beginning, there were more rules but today not so many because they share the value.
“Today, we share the rules, on and off the pitch. And the rules become a habit.

“One example: Every morning, we all shake hands with each other to show respect, to show you feel for your team-mates and that you are interested in the people with whom you shake hands.
“This is a small thing which means a lot to create a real team. A lot of things like this are important to settle in the team and show in the team. To be ready to fight for each other.”

An Arsenal defeat at Nottingham Forest on Saturday night would give them the prize even earlier.
City only need a point if the Gunners draw at the relegation battlers.
And as Sunday’s match is City’s final home game of the season, Pep Guardiola and his squad are to be handed the trophy after the game.
It could mean a frosty reception for league chief Richard Masters after he confirmed the decision to charge City with 115 alleged breaches of Premier League regulations.

There is still no sign of the independent commission, that is to rule on the case against the champions-elect, sitting to hear the evidence in the coming months.
And rival clubs fear it could be three more years before there is an outcome.
Should the title race be extended into the last week of the season, the trophy would not be presented until after the final matches on May 28, even if it was won before then.
That would mean the Premier League presentation party being at Brentford.

And chairman Steve Parish is understood to be seriously considering handing him a one-year contract.
The former England boss, who turns 76 in August, is already the oldest manager in the history of English top-flight football.
But he has made it clear he does not consider himself to be ‘retired’ and would like to manage beyond this campaign.
Hodgson left Palace by mutual consent in 2021 but returned for a short, unsuccessful spell at Watford last season before he replaced Patrick Vieira at Selhurst Park in March.

With five wins in eight games so far, Hodgson has comfortably steered Palace to Premier League safety.
And while Parish had been lining up potential permanent bosses from the Continent, he is now torn over whether to stick with Hodgson.
Apart from a significant upturn in results under Hodgson, Parish is said to be impressed with the way in which forward Eberechi Eze has improved under the veteran.
And Hodgson also has an excellent working relationship with Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha, who is out of contract this summer and yet to agree new terms.

Zaha is set to miss the final two matches of the season — with the Eagles waiting to learn whether the icon has played his last game for the club.
Parish felt Palace stagnated under Hodgson towards the end of his initial four-year spell but, after Vieira’s 18-month reign ended in failure, he returned to the experienced boss and has seen him excel.
And now the Eagles sit 12th in the table and 12 points from the drop.

The midfielder is being eyed by Manchester United and Manchester City but Arsenal are prepared to splash £90m to bring him to North London, report the Daily Mail.

Fans given incredible behind-the-scenes look at VAR on MNF… but viewers aren’t convinced by Howard Webb’s ‘propaganda’

FOOTBALL fans were treated to a unique behind-the-scenes look at VAR but some were not convinced by Howard Webb in his appearance on Monday Night Football. The PGMOL chief accompanied Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher and offered further insight into VAR’s decision-making process.

One was the decision to overturn a handball given against Arsenal’s Jakub KiwiorCredit: Sky Sports
Another included the decision to award Ivan Toney a penalty against BournemouthCredit: Sky Sports
All three watched a series of clips where VAR has played a vital role in overturning a referee’s on-pitch decision, and discussed the communication between refs and the VAR in Stockley Park.
First they watched an incident during a match between Chelsea and Liverpool where Kai Havertz scored with the use of his hand – the ref gave the goal but VAR was able to rule it out for handball after watching a replay.
Webb, Carragher and Neville also reviewed a recent handball incident in Arsenal’s win at Newcastle earlier this month.
Interestingly the footage showed VAR going through all the steps and highlighted their awareness surrounding possible outcomes – including the ball potentially going out of play from an outswinging corner.

For the incident in question the referee blew for a penalty after judging Jakub Kiwior to have blocked a shot with his arm.
However the VAR was quickly on hand to check if the ball first hit Kiwior’s thigh, which it did, and they informed Chris Kavanagh to overturn his penalty call.
The trio also watched replays from West Ham vs Newcastle, Brentford vs Bournemouth and Leicester vs Arsenal but some fans felt certain incidents were cherry-picked to show VAR in a good light.
Other controversial moments where VAR appeared to have got decisions incorrect were left out, leading fans to claim it was a PR exercise.

One fan wrote: “I appreciate that Sky have gone through some VAR decisions where we can hear them walk through the decisions, but they’ve definitely played it safe with the clips they’ve shown!”
Another added: “That VAR segment on MNF has just made me hate Howard Webb and prem’ refs even more. 35 minutes of cherry picked PGMOL propaganda showing how ‘competent’ they are. Useless.”
A third said: “This is so so embarrassing. they’re only showing easy decisions they got right. How about you show Mitoma v Spurs, Rashford v city, Arsenal vs Brentford, Crystal Palace v Brighton etc and explain those. This is nothing but VAR/referee propaganda.”
And another commented: “Insightful? You must be joking. The first two examples you showed we all knew the outcome of those at the time before they even went to VAR.
“Who picked them Sky or Howard Webb? Where were any dubious decisions? All staged for PR” More

But the sale has taken a new twist as pictures published by The Mirror, show Glazer leaving Claridge’s.
Interestingly, the hotel is parent company of the Maybourne Hotel Group, owned by Sheikh Jassim’s father, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.
A huge complication over the five month selling process, which has seen THREE rounds of bidding. was the growing desire by co-chairman Joel and Avram Glazer to remain at the club.
But the American family are finally ready to sell United — and Ratcliffe remains the frontrunner.

Ratcliffe and his Ineos petro-chemicals giant have been engaged in a drawn-out bidding war with Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani for ownership of British football’s biggest club.
The Glazers’ chosen deal-makers, the US-based Raine Group, expected to confirm the “winning” bid within days, we understand Ratcliffe is the preferred partner.
And that would mean an imminent exodus of the rest of the Old Trafford top brass including chief executive Richard Arnold – but not the two Glazer siblings.
Old Trafford insiders have indicated the Glazers would prefer to sell majority control to Ratcliffe’s Ineos Sport rather than flogging the whole club to Sheikh Jassim.

While Sheikh Jassim’s £5bn bid for full control was the highest sum offered, Sir Jim and Ineos’ deal for 50 per cent valued the full club at a price point closer to the Glazers’ demanded £6bn.
And the Ineos offer will allow the two Glazers to retain their stakes while letting the four other siblings cash-out their shares.
A number of American financial institutions have also bid to buy minority stakes in the club that could allow the Glazers to retain control AND finance improvements to the Old Trafford stadium and Carrington training ground.
But it now seems a Ratcliffe-led partial takeover is the preferred option, despite Glazer’s visit to the five-star Claridge’s.
