Brighton’s transfer for James Milner could be HIJACKED as former club want to bring him back

LEEDS UNITED have made a late swoop to try and hijack Brighton’s plans to sign James Milner.Milner, 37, is out of contract at Anfield this summer.

And it had been widely-expected that he was set to agree a one-year deal to join former Reds team-mate Adam Lallana at Brighton.
Now the Daily Mail has claimed that an “emotional return to Leeds could be on the cards” if the Elland Road club avoid relegation.
Milner came through Leeds’ academy and made his debut for his hometown club aged 16 in 2002.
He penned a five-year deal in 2003 but was sold to Newcastle just 12 months later as financial problems engulfed Elland Road.

The midfielder then went on to star for Aston Villa and England before joining Manchester City.
He arrived on a free transfer at Liverpool in 2015 and has won the lot during his nine years on Merseyside.
After winning the Premier League twice at City, he helped the Reds end their 30-year title drought in 2021.
That was after playing a key role in their Champions League, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup successes in 2019.

And he added to his trophy cabinet again last season as Jurgen Klopp’s side lifted both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup.
Now as he prepares for the next chapter in his storied career, it had appeared that Brighton set to be the winners in battle to secure the experienced ace’s signature.
However, he has often spoken fondly of Leeds are his old employers “are in the hunt” to sign him.
And this update states that “a move back to Elland Road cannot be ruled out with no decision yet made” – although they will need to retain their Premier League status to pull off the deal.
Leeds, who have just appointed Sam Allardyce to try and save them, currently occupy the final relegation spot.
They are a point behind Everton with two matches – away to West Ham and at home to Tottenham – left to play.

Analysing the Dream Team XI in pole position to win the £75,000 jackpot – featuring six Manchester City players

WE’RE well and truly into squeaky bum time of the 2022/23 Dream Team season. And no gaffer will be as restless as Andrew Cadman, the man currently leading the overall leaderboard and therefore in pole position to win the £75,000 jackpot.
Let’s take a closer look at the Arsenal fan’s XI ‘Cobblers’, which has 2,725 points overall…
Andrew’s team complete with the current Game Week scoresCredit: DREAM TEAM
The vast majority of the top gaffers will be leaning heavily on Manchester City players as the season draws to a close.
Pep Guardiola’s side remain active in the Champions League and the FA Cup in addition to their final Premier League commitments – more importantly, they’re in imperious form.
Andrew is backing six Etihad assets right now but his specific selections make for interesting reading.
Jack Grealish (£5.4m) is generally considered a more reliable starter than Riyad Mahrez (£6.6m) at the moment but the Algerian winger tends to make the most of his minutes when given a chance and his overall tally of 194 points put him third among midfielders in the rankings.
At the back, Ruben Dias (£6.5m) and Manuel Akanji (£4.4m) are guaranteed plenty of minutes and the latter is a smart option because he’s been relatively affordable this term.
Nathan Ake (£5.4m) is nursing a minor injury at the minute and he missed out on some easy clean sheet points against Everton at the weekend – a possible weakness?
Kevin De Bruyne (£8.7m) and Erling Haaland (£10.4m) are bankers that need no justification but Andrew may be concerned what damage Grealish, John Stones (£6m) and the in-form Ilkay Gundogan (£3.6m) could do in the coming weeks.

Man City defenders are popular at the back end of the campaign
David de Gea’s (£3.6m) goalkeeping has been under the spotlight of late but the fact remains the Spaniard is Dream Team’s top performer in his position.
Manchester United’s long-serving custodian has earned 147 points thanks mostly to his record of 24 clean sheets in 2022/23 – he’s on track to win the second Golden Glove of his career having registered 16 clean sheets in the top flight.
The Red Devils boast two position-leading assets as Bruno Fernandes (£6.7m) is currently edging out De Bruyne in the two-horse race for midfield supremacy, with 246 points to the Belgian’s 238.
The Portugal international claimed his tenth Star Man award of the campaign at the weekend, making him the outright leader in the metric.
Andrew has recognised that Liverpool’s strong end to the season is producing lorry-loads of points.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (£6m) has amassed 85 points across the last eleven Game Weeks, a fruitful spell that has featured seven assists, seven clean sheets, two Star Man awards and a goal.
As for Mohamed Salah (£9.1m), two quickfire assists against Leicester on Monday night meant he became just the second player this season to reach double figures for goals and assists in the Premier League, following in the footsteps of Bukayo Saka (£5.4m).
Leading lights in the realm of Dream Team
Interestingly, Andrew has zero Arsenal players in his XI, a reflection of the Gunners’ dip at the back end of the season – although Martin Odegaard (£4.8m) achieved 31 points in his two games before Brighton’s visit to the Emirates.
There is some north London representation in top XI, however, in the form of Harry Kane (£9.5m).
Tottenham’s No10 is second only to Haaland for Premier League goals this season and he’s been on a tear of late despite his side’s broader problems.
The England captain has banked 84 points in his last ten outings.
    Read More on The Sun
It’s clear that Andrew has monitored his budget superbly this season, buying low and selling high at opportune times and eventually ending up with mega team capable of landing him £75,000.
Good luck to Andrew and all other gaffers in contention for prize money – hold your nerve! More

Man Utd star Phil Jones names best five-a-side team and springs major surprise with top striker in DEFENCE

PHIL JONES has surprised as he named Dimitar Berbatov in his dream Manchester United five-a-side team – but has put him in the DEFENCE.A lot of people would suggest that the retired Bulgarian striker would be the perfect player on a smaller pitch.
Phil Jones has named his ultimate Manchester United five-a-side team
But not many would stick him at the back alongside Nemanja Vidic, especially when the Serb formed a rock-solid combo with Rio Ferdinand.
David De Gea is, of course, picked in goal after years of being United’s last line of defence.
Paul Scholes ties everything together as the creative spark in the middle, while Wayne Rooney stars up front.
Jones himself is a United veteran, but is set to leave the club after 12 years as he is set to be released at the end of the season.
On his decisions for his five-a-side team, the 31-year-old told Goal back in 2019: “I’ll go David [De Gea] No brainer.
“Five-a-side so, do you know what? I’m going to be stupid here. I’m going to put Berba there. Berbatov.

“Berba used to annoy me in training, every single training session. He used to play at centre-half and when I said to him ‘no, the manager asked me to play there’, he was like ‘no, go somewhere else’.
“He was unbelievable. I’ll put Berba there.
“And I’ll put… I’ll put Vida [Vidic] in there as well just because he throws himself at everything.
“Then I’m going to go with Scholesy. And I’ve got to go Wazza [Rooney].”

The defender made his team before Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Old Trafford, and then left again, meaning Jones may now have changed his mind on one of his strikers.
Jones himself didn’t quite make his own team – and with his recent injury record it’s no wonder.
The defender has been a fringe player at Old Trafford over the last few seasons because of his lack of fitness.
He will now have to decide between joining a new club or retiring from football.

Despite Arsenal having topped the table for a staggering 93 per cent of the season so far, City can secure their fifth title in six seasons against Chelsea this weekend.
Should Arsenal lose at relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest, Pep Guardiola’s team will be crowned champions without having to play.
Arsenal-mad Piers was furious in the wake of Sunday’s thrashing at home to Brighton, and called for five major signings for the Gunners to compete for silverware next season.
Taking to Twitter on Tuesday morning, he said: “If Arsenal want to actually win major trophies next season, here is my shopping list… and we need all of them.

“Min-Jae, Caicedo, Rice, Mitoma, Osimhen or Vlahovic.”
Napoli defender Kim Min-Jae has played 43 times in all competitions for the Serie A champions this season, and is rumoured to have a release clause between £43million and £52million.
Both Moises Caicedo and Declan Rice have been tipped for a move to the Emirates this season.
The Gunners had offers of £60m and £70m for the Brighton star knocked back in January, while West Ham captain Rice is also expected to move on in the summer.

Arsenal are prepared to offer Rice a deal worth £300,000-a-week, with Hammers boss David Moyes admitting last week that there is a “good chance” the England midfielder will leave the club this summer.
Fellow Brighton midfielder Mitoma has caught the eye this season, chipping in with seven goals and four assists.
Victor Osimhen, meanwhile, is Serie A top scorer with 23 goals in 29 games.
He has been linked with a host of top clubs throughout the season as both Chelsea and Man Utd seek to bolster their attacking ranks.
Dusan Vlahovic – Piers’ final must-have star – has just 10 goals this season but, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, is frustrated at Juventus.
SunSport columnist Piers’ suggestions were welcomed by fellow Arsenal fans, with one saying: “You need to train Arsenal from next season.”
Another added: “Caicedo and Rice probably are the no brainers.” More

Pochettino ready to build his new Chelsea team around four key English stars… just like with Kane and Co at Tottenham

MAURICIO POCHETTINO is reportedly plotting to transform Chelsea with a core of young English talents – just like he did at Tottenham. The former Spurs boss has agreed terms to take over at Stamford Bridge with an announcement expected to follow.

Pochettino will replace Frank Lampard next month after the club legend took interim charge following Graham Potter’s sacking.
The Argentine, 51, has six years of Premier League experience following his time with first Southampton and then Tottenham.
He is one of Spurs’ most successful and popular managers in recent history – despite failing to win a trophy with the club.
He averaged 1.89 points per game – the most for any Tottenham boss in Premier League history with a minimum of 38 Premier League games in charge.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
He capped off his five-year stint at White Hart Lane by leading Spurs to the 2019 Champions League final, where they lost to Liverpool.
But he was sacked just months later following a poor start to the 2019-20 campaign.
Poch eventually took over at Paris Saint-Germain in January 2021, winning the Coupe de France and Ligue 1 with their star-studded squad.
But it was in North London where Pochettino really made his name and his methods known.

And it was a core of young English talents – Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Danny Rose and Eric Dier – that helped him achieve that success.
Now the Evening Standard say Poch plans to do the same at Stamford Bridge and build his squad around a core of homegrown players that includes the on-loan Brighton defender Levi Colwill.
They say that he has identified centre-back Colwill, 20, midfielders Conor Gallagher and Mason Mount and full-back Reece James “as players who could be instrumental to his project” at the Blues.
And that could lead to a major overhaul of the club’s transfer plans this summer with reports that Chelsea were considering selling a number of academy graduates to help balance the books.
Colwill has shone for the Seagulls this term and still has two years remaining on his contract – although a 12-month extension will be triggered should he make 15 Premier League appearances from the club.
Many are tipping him for an England call-up and he has been attracting interest from the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Brighton.
But now it seems that any hopes of signing the ace will soon be extinguished once Pochettino takes charge.
Poch may face a tougher task keeping hold of Mount, with SunSport revealing last week that relations between player and club are at an all time low.
The 24-year-old has just 12 months left on his contract but thus far Mount and Chelsea have been unable to agree fresh terms with a reported price tag of £60million set on him as Liverpool and Arsenal eye deals.
Now this update states that Pochettino “is likely to recommend offering him a new deal”.
Meanwhile the South American’s arrival could also provide a lifeline for fellow England international Gallagher.
Chelsea were open to offers for the ace in January but declined selling him to Newcastle as they were perceived as a potential European rival.

This update states that “the 23-year-old is understood to want to stay at Chelsea under a manager who trusts him”.
That could see him become a key figure under Poch, who also plans on making James one of the first names on his team-sheet.

Carney Chukwuemeka ‘unfairly’ forced to withdraw from England U20s squad sparking Chelsea fury

CARNEY CHUKWUEMEKA has been withdrawn from England U20s’ World Cup squad for the group stages – sparking fury from Chelsea fans. The midfielder was set to link up with the Young Lions for the tournament in Argentina, with the England’s opening match against Tunisia on Monday.

But the group stage clashes with the final weeks of the Premier League season.
Chelsea are now understood to have informed the FA that they will not be releasing Chukwuemeka for the World Cup’s opening games.
And the BBC report he could even be missing for the entire tournament.
Chelsea are believed to have made the decision after injuries to N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic left them short in midfield.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
The Blues have three games remaining before their season comes to an end.
But all the matches are effectively dead rubbers after a poor season left the London club drifting around in mid-table and unable to challenge for the European places.
The decision is a blow to U20 boss Ian Foster who is not allowed to call-up a replacement under tournament rules.
England will head to South America on Tuesday with only 16 players as four are still involved in the EFL play-offs.

Fans have been left baffled by the decision to not allow Chukwuemeka to head to Argentina with the rest of England’s young guns.
The 19-year-old has not been in the club’s matchday squad for the previous seven matches and last started a league game in January.
One Chelsea fan said on Twitter: “Disgraceful if Carney Chukwuemeka doesn’t get minutes now he’s been held back from joining the U20s World Cup.”
Another said: “[Frank] Lampard won’t play him, he’s going to be benched in every single game or not even make the squad list so I don’t understand why he’s getting hindered.”
While another frustrated supporter said: “If he doesn’t start Sunday [away at Manchester City] not fair.”
And one added: “I don’t understand. We have nothing to play for so let him go and gain tournament experience.”
Chelsea beat Barcelona to the signing of the highly-rated youngster last summer but it has not been a straightforward debut season at Stamford Bridge.
Amid the London side’s troubled campaign and managerial changes, he has only made 11 first-team appearances but has shown flashes of potential in his outings. More

Neville singles out Zinchenko for ’emotional over-celebrating’ after Arsenal star was ‘tooting his horn 15 games out’

GARY NEVILLE accused Arsenal of “over-celebrating” victories and claimed their players were “too emotional” before their title collapse. The Sky Sports pundit has been adamant for months that Manchester City would be crowned Premier League champions.

And, with Sunday’s shock 3-0 home defeat to Brighton leaving Arsenal’s title dream in tatters, Neville is seemingly about to be proved right.
SunSport revealed on Monday how Mikel Arteta’s side have been in top spot form 93 PER CENT of the season so far, and even had an eight-point lead just weeks ago.
But City will be champions if the Gunners lose their next game at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
And, even if Arsenal win, City will still win the league if they win at home to Chelsea next Sunday.

Neville has been accused by Gunners legend Martin Keown of being “biased” against the North London club.
And the Manchester United legend, who has already revealed seven reasons why Arsenal have failed, has now continued his crusade on explaining where it all went wrong.
Eight-time Prem champions Neville used the viral social media clip of Oleksandr Zinchenko beeping his car horn and shouting “come on” while driving past fans following the 4-1 win over Crystal Palace in March as a prime example.
Speaking on Sky’s Monday Night Football, he said: “I always doubted whether this Arsenal team [could win the title], just looking at some of the things that were happening.

“The over-celebrations against Aston Villa [after the 4-2 win in February]. I look at little things that might look a little bit harsh – Zinchenko celebrating an hour after the game with the fans outside and screaming.
“You want your leaders in the team, who have been there before to spread composure around the dressing room and calm everybody down. You don’t want them to lift the anxiety, lift the emotion.”
A fan then tweeted Neville saying: “There are reasons Arsenal’s results have dipped but I don’t think Zinchenko tooting his car horn at some Arsenal fans is among them.”
He erroneously said the Zinchenko video emerged after the 3-2 victory over Bournemouth rather than the Palace win, but the fan pointed out both results came in a seven-game winning run.
Neville then replied: “If he was tooting his horn 15 games out after beating Bournemouth, calling huddles 6 games out v the bottom of the league [the 3-3 draw with Southampton last month].
“I’m filling in the blanks of what was going on behind the scenes!!! I’ve seen it before from emotional teams!
“The experience I’m talking from isn’t just from winning titles! I lost 4/5 title races as well.
“Some emotions aren’t positive ones for a group even if they look it!”
