Newcastle ‘target surprise move for RB Leipzig star’ who would shatter their transfer record

NEWCASTLE are reportedly going all in for RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai – but he could demand a fee that would break their transfer record. The Magpies are looking to strengthen in the summer with European football now guaranteed at St James’ Park next season.

Backed by their rich owners, it appears the sky is the limit for the club as they head into the transfer window.
And Sky Sports Germany report one of their major targets is RB Leipzig attacker Szoboszlai, who the club have been monitoring.
The Hungarian’s profile has grown since his 2021 move to the Red Bull Arena and at 22 years of age he has space to grow.
But attracting the star to the north-east of England could prove expensive due to his release clause.

Newcastle could have to offer 70m euros – around £60m – to force Leipzig into accepting their bid.
This fee could edge out the amount they paid for Alexander Isak last summer which is their current club record.
Szoboszlai’s contract runs until 2026 which will allow Leipzig some space to negotiate – but the report adds that the German club are willing to “lower the thumb” to find a fee.
The winger is believed to want to play for a club in the Champions League.

Newcastle sit third and need six more points to guarantee passage into Europe’s top tier competition.
While RB Leipzig’s late victory over Werder Bremen on the weekend – which saw Szoboszlai snatch a stoppage-time winner – leaves his side needing just a single win from their last two. More

Wayne Rooney tipped to become Man Utd manager as former team-mate reveals ‘I’m pretty sure he will be’

FORMER Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has tipped Wayne Rooney to manage the club one day.Rooney is a United legend and moved into management in 2020 when he took charge of Derby.

The former striker also believes Michael Carrick is capable of managing the Red DevilsCredit: PA
He narrowly failed to keep the Rams in the Championship after the cash-strapped Rams were given points deductions and he has since moved to the US where he manages DC United.
Wazza has won just seven of his 28 games in charge of the MLS side but they are in play-off contention this season.
And Berbatov believes his former team-mate has what it takes to manage United in the future.
He told Betfred: “Not many players from my time at Manchester United have actually gone into management, but in my opinion, Wayne Rooney would like to be a future Manchester United manager and I’m pretty sure he’s going to be.

“He’s currently paying his dues in club management at the moment, gaining vital experience and getting better and better, so I’m pretty sure he will manage Manchester United one day.”
Berbatov also identified another former team-mate as a potential Red Devils manager – Michael Carrick.
The midfielder took over at Middlesbrough earlier this season and propelled Boro up the league to finish fourth in the Championship in what is his first permanent managerial job.
Carrick previously worked at United as assistant boss to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who claims Carrick has the potential to be the main man in the Old Trafford dugout.

Berbatov praised his intelligence, saying: “I’m sure Michael Carrick would also like to be Manchester United manager in the future.
“Anybody would want to manage the club they love, and he’s currently doing very well at Middlesbrough.
“Michael was a very intelligent player on the pitch, a midfield maestro, and he’s showing everybody that he’s a very intelligent manager too.” More

Inside Ivan Toney’s feud with Arsenal stars that would stop Gunners transfer even if he wasn’t facing long ban

WHAT do Arsenal need to even get close to Manchester City again?Because it feels harsh, but fair, to state that Mikel Arteta’s team are more likely to finish fifth than first next season.
Arsenal are likely to fall just short of the Premier League trophyCredit: Getty
Arsenal are a young team under a young manager, who are only likely to improve.
They led the Premier League for the vast majority of the campaign and provided a thrilling challenge to Pep Guardiola’s champions only to be comprehensively outplayed by them twice.
Yet Newcastle’s Geordie Arabia revolution will certainly become mightier still.
Manchester United’s sale can strengthen Erik ten Hag’s squad.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
Liverpool, with a midfield refurb, will surely become more consistent and, under Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea will be back in the mix.
Villa and Brighton are excellent teams on the up and, who knows, Spurs might even find the right manager to compete.
OK, maybe that last one sounds a bit far-fetched but you catch my drift — it’s going to get tougher.
Arsenal will upgrade their midfield with Declan Rice or Brighton’s Moises Caicedo.

And a better back-up centre-half than Rob Holding or Jakub Kiwior is also essential because the injury to William Saliba has cost them dearly.
But is that enough to challenge City again? It’s doubtful.
No, Arsenal need an elite centre-forward. And those are not easy to come by.
It is not that the Gunners have been light on goals, their Premier League total of 83 is well clear of anyone other than City, and they have four players in double figures — Gabriel Martinelli, Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus.
With ten goals in 24 league games, Jesus has done reasonably well. But  Arsenal’s collapse coincided with the Brazilian’s return from a long-term injury and when Arteta threw the dice at 1-0 down to Brighton on Sunday, he hauled him off.
Jesus, a serial title winner at City, is a fine player. He can operate on the wing and, in 2020, he was man of the match as a wing-back in a Champions League victory over Real Madrid at the Bernabeu.
But there was a reason that Pep Guardiola did not often employ Jesus at centre-forward, even when he did not have another specialist option.
Jesus is not an authentic, focal-point No 9. Indeed, No 9 might not even be his best position.
Arsenal are unlikely to sign Ivan ToneyCredit: Getty
Harry Kane is another top forward that would not sign for ArsenalCredit: Alamy
The sickener for Arsenal is the best two oven-ready Premier League centre-forwards, Harry Kane and Ivan Toney, are unavailable to them.
It’s weird that Kane to Chelsea is a possibility but Kane to Arsenal isn’t. Spurs’ rivalry with Chelsea is — in the boardroom and dressing room — more bitter than with the Gunners.
But even though he spent a season at Arsenal’s academy, Tottenham’s all-time top scorer would not ‘do a Sol Campbell’.
And Brentford striker Toney, who would improve Arteta’s squad, is a non-starter.
Firstly, he has a lengthy ban for breaking betting rules hanging over his head — and how ridiculous is it that Toney’s punishment remains on hold months after he admitted multiple offences?
Secondly, Toney has a very real, on-going feud with Arsenal’s players fuelled by a series of social media posts.
Toney’s ‘Nice kickabout with the boys’ tweet, when Brentford defeated the Gunners in August 2021, has been returned by Arsenal players more than once and Toney has called their responses ‘cringeworthy’.
Away from the Premier League, the pickings are slim.
Victor Osimhen seems out of reach for the GunnersCredit: Getty
Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is the stand-out but, even if the Nigerian leaves this summer, he would surely be beyond the Gunners in terms of finances and status.
Look around Europe’s major leagues and there is no other obvious ‘next Erling Haaland’.
The top two scorers in LaLiga, for example, are 35-year-old Karim Benzema and Robert Lewandowski, who turns 35 in August.
Lautaro Martinez, of Inter Milan, is a target for Pochettino’s Chelsea but in Argentina’s World Cup-winning squad he was second choice to Julian Alvarez,   Haaland’s back-up man at City.
That is what Arsenal are up against.
They are competing with the best squad, the best manager, the best scorer in the world, financed by a nation-state accused of bending rules.

So here is a prediction to be filed under ‘I really hope I’m wrong here but…’

James Rodriguez could be set for shock Premier League free transfer with three clubs monitoring World Cup legend

JAMES RODRIGUEZ has been tipped for a shock Premier League return with three clubs reported to be tracking him. The Columbian midfielder, who became a worldwide star during the 2014 World Cup, has been without a club in over a month.

He had his contract ripped up at Olympiacos in April after just 23 games for the Greek club.
The 31-year-old is now a free agent and Prem clubs are believed to be leading the race to land him.
Columbian outlet El Futbolero report that Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Brighton are trying to work out whether a deal would be possible.
Journalist Christian Martin said: “We understand that he (James) prioritizes continuing in European football. Could it be England?

“We understand that yes, that there is a possibility that clubs like Crystal Palace, Bournemouth or even Brighton itself, which is not used to making this type of incorporation, at least find out the conditions in which the Colombian could arrive.”
Rodriguez has struggled to get his career going again after leaving Everton in 2021.
The ex-Real Madrid star only had one season at Goodison Park as he took his part in an exciting Everton team led by Carlo Ancelotti.
The Toffees were 2nd on Boxing Day but struggled for form in the second half of the campaign and finished 10th before Ancelotti left for Real Madrid.

Four clubs who could hand Sadio Mane Premier League return transfer as he ‘has NO future under Tuchel at Bayern’

SADIO MANE reportedly has no future at Bayern Munich. And four Premier League clubs could be willing to bring him back to England this summer.
Sadio Mane is not wanted by Bayern Munich… but he could have four options in EnglandCredit: Getty
Mane joined Bayern from Liverpool last summer for £27million.
But he’s failed to recapture his old form, scoring just seven times in the league after suffering an injury setback that saw him miss the World Cup.
Mane’s frustration then blew over in the changing room when he allegedly struck teammate Leroy Sane following Bayern’s Champions League defeat to Man City.
And the Mail now claims that Thomas Tuchel wants to get rid of Mane.

The former Chelsea boss wants a proper No9 to lead his line next term.
But there’s sure to already a queue of English clubs lining up to bring Mane back to the Prem.
Ironically, Tuchel’s old side Chelsea are thought to be leading the race after a dismal debut season under Todd Boehly.
The Blues are looking to boost their attacking options after netting just 36 league goals.

And Mane would certainly give Mauricio Pochettino the Premier League experience he’s craving from new signings.
Another option for Mane is Arsenal, who appear to have cruelly missed out on their first title in almost 20 years.
Despite leading the race for 93 per cent of the season, the Gunners have seen Man City become champions elect with just two games remaining.
Mikel Arteta has already witnessed the impact made by experienced duo Jorginho and Leandro Trossard.
And Mane would help to further fill the leadership void while giving Arsenal’s talented youngsters another superstar to look up to.
Elsewhere, Newcastle are unlikely to turn their nose up at a player of Mane’s quality.
Eddie Howe looks set to secure a brilliant top four finish, and Mane would be ideal to slot in on either wing, providing much-needed depth and quality.
Finally, Liverpool could yet attempt to re-sign their former fan favourite.
Mane was one of Jurgen Klopp’s most important players as he stormed to Premier League and Champions League glory.
Liverpool never wanted to sell him last summer, but had their hand forced when Mane pushed for the exit himself.
    Read More on The Sun
The Reds have already moved to replace him with Darwin Nunez, while the likes of Mo Salah and Luis Diaz are continuing to do the business.
But if the price is right, and Mane is keen, it could end up being the most likely outcome this summer. More

Arsenal face horror Champions League group and will be praying Liverpool miss out on top four

ARSENAL face a Champions League kick in the teeth for next season.Despite a likely runners-up spot in the Premier League, the Gunners are heading for the THIRD seeding pot in August’s group stage draw in Monaco.

Mikel Arteta will be desperate for Liverpool not to qualify for the Champions LeagueCredit: Reuters
It means Mikel Arteta’s side, back in the elite competition after a seven-year absence, could face a horror draw against the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
And while the Gunners could still be promoted into the second batch of seeds, they will be desperate for Liverpool’s late top four charge to fail – as success would boot them another place down the rankings.
Uefa regulations mean the champions of the top six nations in the “country coefficient” – compiled over five seasons are automatic top seeds, along with the Champions League and Europa League winners.
The rest of the seeding pots are ranked on the “club coefficient” scores, with each team’s results during the past five seasons of European action added up.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
If things remain as they are across Europe’s major leagues, the top seeds will be Manchester City, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Napoli, PSG and Benfica, along with the two competition winners.
If City win the Champions League as well as the Prem, the final and eighth spot will go to Dutch champions Feyenoord.
As things stand, the eight highest ranked non-champion qualifiers, who would form the second seeding group, would be Real Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, RB Leipzig and Porto.
Arsenal will miss out by one place.

That could change, however, with Juventus facing a final decision on whether they should be deducted points, potentially ruling them out of the Champions League frame by an Italian tribunal next Monday.
The Turin side are currently second but are expected to lose as many as ten points, and if they finished outside the Serie A top four in place of AC Milan, that would promote Arsenal.
Likewise, if Real Madrid or Inter Milan – they have one foot in the final after their first leg win over their San Siro neighbours last week – triumph in Istanbul next month, Arsenal would be assured of the final second seeding berth.
However, if Liverpool get into the top four, with Newcastle the team to miss out, then it would need BOTH Juventus’ demotion and a Real or Inter Champions League triumph for Arsenal to be in the second tier.
Newcastle, who have not played in Europe since reaching the last eight of the Europa League in 2013, will be guaranteed a group stage place if they finish in the top four.
But Eddie Howe’s Magpies are certain to be in the bottom seeding pot, ensuring a tough draw with at least two major sides to face. More

The Red Devils will face French side Lyon in a pre-season friendly on July 19th at Murrayfield.
Former Manchester United star Wes Brown and current Scotland rugby star Hamish Watson have been speaking to publicise the event.
Scotland are represented in the current Old Trafford first team by Scott McTominay.
And United have a massive Scottish connection through legendary figures like Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex Ferguson.

Current United technical director Darren Fletcher was born and raised in Dalkeith near Edinburgh.
They’ll take on a Lyon side who are coming off a difficult season in Ligue 1 but are still packed with stars.
They are captained by former Arsenal star Alexander Lacazette, with French World Cup winner Corentin Tolisso and veteran German star Jerome Boateng just two other stars in their squad.
Ex Celtic star Moussa Dembele is poised to leave the club this summer as a free agent.

The match occurs while Celtic are on their summer tour of Japan and South Korea – with the Scottish Premiership set to kick off on the weekend of August 5/6.
The news came with United fans preparing for the “end of an era” with five popular stars set to be released.
A number of United players are out of contract at the end of next month, with decision-makers opting not to renew them.
One such player is long-serving United star Phil Jones, who has won two league titles.
The 31-year-old’s time at Old Trafford is finally set to come to an end following an injury-plagued 12-year stay.
Jones, once likened to United legend Duncan Edwards by Sir Alex Ferguson, went from one of the stars of the future to a mainstay in the medical room.
The former Blackburn defender, now 31, has not featured under Erik ten Hag this season.
Indeed, his persistent injuries in the last few years have seen him play feature in just six games in the Premier League since the start of the 2019/20 season after being handed a new contract in February 2019.
