We live in former Premier League stadium converted into flats – we love it but there’s a catch

RESIDENTS living in an old football stadium say they’re having a ball – apart from one major drawback.Arsenal moved out of Highbury in 2006 after 93 years and headed three roads over to the 60,700 seater Emirates.

Highbury Square apartments was built in its place and now boasts 650 posh apartments.
Completed in 2010, modern two bed flats in the development can command up to £850,000.

Cheryl Cavelli, 47, has lived in the development for the last two years.
The former HR worker, originally from the USA, told The Sun: “I don’t know anything about soccer but it’s sort of like being pitch side.

“It’s a nice place to live in a quiet corner of London. I love it.”
Half the flats incorporate the skeletal remains of the old East and West stands.
Residents in these flats get a dose of nostalgia as they use the old turn style entrances to access their homes.
A vast glass façade covers these two blocks, and behind it sit flats and interior balconies.

Meanwhile new stadium-style brise soleil coverings loom over both stands to stop residents getting frazzled in hot sun.
The preserved stands also mean the frontages of the old 1923 stadium are still in place on Avenell Road and Highbury Hill.
And that means a lot to Arsenal mad Ken who was off to the pub to watch the Newcastle away game.
Although he doesn’t live in the development, he wishes he did.
“These are my roots, Highbury is Arsenal to me”, he told The Sun.
He added: “It’s nice they’ve kept a bit of it. It means a lot to people like me.
“Just loads of memories of me and my dad bless him.”
Sadly the North Bank and Clock End [south] stands were demolished during the development.
In their place are two new apartment blocks which boast balconies overlooking the old pitch.
The outdoor complex give residents the chance to wander around a central open air recreation area.
It was here where resident Mr Galloway pointed out to The Sun how over 500 Arsenal fans had their ashes buried under the old pitch.
He explained: “They could’ve just bulldozed them when this got thrown up but there are memorials like a bench and flowerbeds for them now.”
But another resident who did not want to be named said there is one major catch to living in the former stadium: you can’t even play football.
They said: “The old pitch is really fenced off and mainly concrete.
“You have to tap in and out.
“Bit ironic there’s no space to kick a ball around on what used to be ‘The Home of Football’.”
Nicola, 37, a mum of two, is another resident of 5 years in the development.
She added: “I’ve always liked unusual places, like barn conversions and old factories, so it’s sort of unsurprising I ended up here.”
Chris Hall was carrying shopping back when he spoke to The Sun.
He said: “It’s quite cool to live here.
“But for me personally it doesn’t feel that much like a stadium anymore.
“There’s not loads left to make you think it’s an old stadium.”

Carla Short, added: “The bits left of the stadium are interesting. The only thing that annoys me is a lot of tourists taking pictures.
“People also come up to me asking questions about it.”

Pep Guardiola slams claims Man City must win Champions League and rants ‘my legacy is exceptional already’

PEP GUARDIOLA claims his Manchester City legacy will be “exceptional” — even if he fails to win the Champions League. But City defender Kyle Walker feels the squad owe it to their Abu Dhabi owners to finally become kings of Europe.

City, on the brink of a fifth Premier League title in six seasons, are yet to lift the trophy they really want in Pep’s seven years at the Etihad.
With their semi-final with Real Madrid poised at 1-1 ahead of the second leg, Guardiola said: “My legacy is exceptional already.
“I’ve been here many times already. The legacy is that we have had one hell of a time.
“For many years they will remember a generation of players who for five or six years scored lots of goals and conceded very few — won lots of things and won very well.

“People should remember that. It would be a good book.
“Whether or not they will remember us or not I don’t know but we have had a good time.”
However, Walker believes that after 12 consecutive years in the competition, it is high time they finally lifted the trophy.
The defender said: “You have to just look over the road at United and what they have accomplished over a number of years.

“When you get compared to that team, they won countless titles.
“We’ve done five in six years, hopefully, if we can cross the line on this one.
“But the club is missing the Champions League and the owners and the amount of money they have pumped into this club and the investment they have done, we owe that to them.
“We got to the Champions League final against Chelsea and did not perform as well as we can.
“So we owe that to ourselves to get some revenge because we know it was below par in 2021.”
Victory over champs Real would leave Pep’s Treble chasers hot favourites to lift Europe’s big prize.
Guardiola added: “We’re not stupid, we know how important this game is.
“It is maybe one of the most important games since we came together here. We cannot deny that. For the competition, for the rival, for many things.”
Guardiola’s players battled back to earn a draw in the Bernabeu last week thanks to Kevin De Bruyne’s stunner.
But Pep said: “My feeling is we have to play better than we did in Madrid.
“But all the players have to do is what we’ve done for many years.
“I’ve lost seven semi- finals out of ten. I’ve lost more than I’ve won, so there are many things you can’t control but my only wish is to be ourselves.”
The ex-Barca boss has been accused of causing City’s downfall in Europe by tinkering too much.
And he teased: “I have an idea that we could do something a bit differently but it’s nothing special.
“I’m not overthinking it, don’t worry guys, nothing different to what we’ve done, just more fluid and play a bit better.”

Last term, the Etihad clash saw City winning 4-3 in the first leg — before slipping up in Spain.
Guardiola added: “We’d like to have the game we had here last season, I’d sign for it right now but I don’t think it will happen.” More

Saliba, 22, started the first 27 Premier League games with his absence a major reason why Arsenal have fallen behind Manchester City in the title race.
But his current Emirates deal expires in the summer of 2024 — with the centre-back spending most of his first three years at the club out on loan.
The Gunners are therefore desperate to get him tied down long-term.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are praying for a Manchester City meltdown — in Europe as well as in the Premier League.

Mikel Arteta’s Gunners have already guaranteed second place in the table and a return to Champions League action after a seven-season absence.
But if City beat Real Madrid tonight, it will increase the chances of Arsenal landing a nightmare draw — which could include the likes of BOTH Real and Bayern Munich — by being dropped into the third seeding pot.
Arsenal’s faint title hopes will be extinguished this weekend if they fail to beat Nottingham Forest or City get three points against Chelsea.
But this evening they have a major interest in Pep Guardiola’s side losing to Madrid and seeing their Euro dream shattered.

Next season’s eight top seeds for August’s group-stage draw in Monaco will be the champions of England, Spain, Germany, France, Italy and Portugal, plus the Champions League and Europa League winners.
Then will come the next eight highest-ranked sides on Uefa’s club coefficient calculation.
Which, as things stand, would be Madrid, Manchester United, Juventus, Inter Milan, Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, Leipzig and Porto, with Arsenal one place out of the frame.

Examples include his infamous man-for-man three at the back deployed while managing Bayern Munich against Barca.
While he also elected not to select a holding midfielder in the 2021 final against Chelsea.

Man Utd takeover twist as Sheikh Jassim lodges FINAL ‘take it or leave it’ bid despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe leading race

SHEIKH JASSIM has launched a last-ditch bid to buy Manchester United. The Qatari remains eager to buy the Red Devils, despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos being selected as preferred bidder.
Sheikh Jassim has made a last-ditch improved bid to buy Man United
Ratcliffe’s offer would see Ineos purchase a majority stake in United, with the Glazers remaining as minority shareholders, which would be hugely unpopular with fans.
Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani, meanwhile, wants to buy the club in its entirety.
And he has “significantly” improved his bid which as before is for 100 per cent of the club, will clear all debt and includes a separate fund directed solely at the club and community.
But it is still said to value United at a lower price than Ratcliffe’s.
    READ MORE IN MAN UTD
The Times claims the new Qatari offer falls short of Ratcliffe’s valuation, which could end up close to £6billion.
But Sheikh Jassim is offering to buy 100 per cent of the club now, for a price nearer to £5billion.
Insiders insist the Qatari offer represents a significant increase on their opening bid.
And if Sheikh Jassim wins, PSG’s Brazil legend Neymar is said to remain a serious target.

Sheikh Jassim’s last-ditch offer comes after Avram Glazer was spotted leaving a hotel owned by the takeover hopeful’s father.
Pictures published by The Mirror showed Glazer leaving Claridge’s.
The hotel is parent company of the Maybourne Hotel Group, owned by Sheikh Jassim’s father, Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani.
A huge complication over the five-month selling process, which has seen THREE rounds of bidding, was the growing desire by co-chairmen Joel and Avram Glazer to remain at the club.

But the American family are finally ready to sell United — and Ratcliffe remains the frontrunner.
Ratcliffe and his Ineos petro-chemicals giant have been engaged in a drawn-out bidding war with Qatari banker Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani for ownership of British football’s biggest club.
The Glazers’ chosen deal-makers, the US-based Raine Group, are expected to confirm the “winning” bid within days. More

Man Utd looking to win transfer race for ‘new Frenkie de Jong’, 16, after tracking wonderkid for a year

MANCHESTER UNITED are trying to get ahead of their rivals in the race to sign Norwegian teen talent Sverre Nypan this summer. The Rosenborg midfielder is the hottest prospect in Scandinavian football right now after announcing himself in senior football with a goal last weekend.

United have been tracking the 16-year-old for around a year and had him on their radar before his initial first-team breakthrough at the end of last year.
The Red Devils followed Nypan’s progress over the winter months when he played for his country’s youth side in a tournament over in Spain.
They have since kept tabs on him and one of their top talent spotters attended Norway’s Uefa Under-17 Championship qualifiers against Croatia and Slovenia.
United’s leading Scandinavian scout Tommy Moller Nielsen was then in attendance at Rosenborg’s home clash with Odds BK in late April the weekend after Nypan had returned to training after a knock.

However, the midfielder — whose press-resistant style has been likened to United target Frenkie de Jong — did not make the matchday squad.
The Old Trafford club are now facing increased competition for Nypan’s signature after his goal against Norwegian table-toppers Bodo/Glimt last weekend alerted other top clubs in Germany, Holland and Belgium.
TV 2 analyst Petter Bo Tosterud believes the fact that under-fire Rosenborg coach Kjetil Rekdal, whose side are just above the relegation zone, chooses to throw the youngster into an already pressured situation speaks volumes about his temperament.
“His touch on the ball and calmness mean that the coaches don’t feel stressed at all, and they probably need to check his passport to see if he is actually 16-years-old,” he told Nettavisen.no.

“He is probably shorter than most of the others on the pitch and 50 kilograms lighter than them.
“But every time a team-mate plays a pass to him, they feel they are making a safe choice.
“That is perhaps what makes him stand out.

Manchester United have reportedly made Kane their number one summer transfer target but he is attracting interest across Europe.
PSG are believed to be prioritising a move for a number nine and like the look of Kane after missing out on Robert Lewandowski.
And according to French outlet Foot Mercato they have opened talks with Kane.
Sporting director Luis Campos is believed to have met with the England captain recently to propose a move to the Parc des Princes.
