Man City lining up £85m transfer for World Cup star as outcast defender looks set to leave club

MANCHESTER CITY are keeping a close eye on RB Leipzig’s financial woes as they weigh up a summer move for defender Josko Gvardiol.Etihad chief Pep Guardiola is a long-term admirer of the Croatian World Cup defender, 21.

He got a close up view when the two teams met in this season’s Champions League Round of 16 and his view remains the same.
So they could firm up their interest if any defenders decide to leave City and seek a new challenge this summer.
Aymeric Laporte is the most likely to go after falling down the pecking order following the arrival of Manuel Akanji in August.
And Gvardiol’s versatility would appeal to Guardiola as he can also play at left-back where City also have a vacancy.

Leipzig have maintained their defender – who has a release clause of around £98million until 2024 – is not for sale.
However it is believed a bid in the region of £85m could bring them to the table due to their money worries.
They need to balance the books to get in line with UEFA’s financial fair play guidelines and that is likely to mean another of their stars leaving.
Christopher Nkunku – who is linked with Chelsea – and Konrad Laimer are already expected to leave but there may need to be at least one more major sale.

City are likely to spend most of their summer budget on refreshing their midfield this summer – but look set to miss out on one of their top targets Jude Bellingham.
Skipper Ilkay Gundogan’s contract expires at the end of the season and nothing has yet been agreed, while Bernardo Silva wants talks with the club in the summer.
Meanwhile, there remains a question mark over whether England ace Kalvin Phillips will make the grade at City after a disappointing first season with them. More

De Bruyne playing through ‘private’ personal issues, says Henry after Man City star told Guardiola to ‘shut up’ in row

MANCHESTER CITY superstar Kevin De Bruyne is spearheading a stunning Treble pursuit despite struggling with a “private” issue this season. That is according to Thierry Henry, who had a small chat and an emotional embrace with De Bruyne after City thrashed Real Madrid and sealed their place in the Champions League Final.

The playmaker has been integral for the Citizens in the Premier League, FA Cup and Europe’s top competition and led a stunning triumph against Real in the semi-finals.
The Belgium international scored the equaliser in the first leg at Santiago Bernabeu and created Bernardo Silva’s opener, which led to a 4-0 triumph at the Etihad on Wednesday.
The 31-year-old was hauled off on 84 minutes as he was replaced by Phil Foden and had a talk with Henry at full-time.
De Bruyne and the Arsenal legend have a close relationship as they used to work together when the latter was Belgium’s assistant manager.

The France great wouldn’t share any details of their conversation but revealed he now has even more respect for the Belgian star as he is not letting his personal issues get in the way of his team’s goals.
Henry told CBS: “It was [a touching moment]. I can’t say it because I have to keep that private.
“But from what he said to me, I [have] even more respect how he played tonight and how he came and battled with his team.
“I can’t share what he said because I can’t share it. That’s how it is.

“But once again I will go back to, for me he is the most important player.”
That wasn’t De Bruyne’s only emotionally charged moment in the match as he was also heard telling City manager Pep Guardiola to “shut up”.
The ex-Chelsea star and Guardiola started rowing in the second half after the former had been robbed of possession.
The Spanish tactician was enraged when De Bruyne failed to spot a potential pass to Jack Grealish on the left and was dispossessed by Eder Militao at a dangerous position.
But the heated argument came to an end when Guardiola walked back to the bench while staring down at the floor.
The two men don’t appear to have any ill-feelings as they embraced once De Bruyne was hauled off just before full-time. More

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp BANNED for two games after Tottenham antics and slamming referee

JURGEN KLOPP has been hit with a ONE game ban for slamming ref Paul Tierney, with a further game suspended until the end of next season. The Liverpool boss WILL be in the dug-out for the Anfield side’s final game of the season – despite accusing the official of having an agenda against his side.
Jurgen Klopp claimed that Paul Tierney holds a grudge against his sideCredit: PA
In what was a surprisingly lenient penalty, an FA spokesperson announced that Klopp, who was fined £75,000, had been handed a two game touchline ban.
However, Wembley beaks added: “The first match of the manager’s touchline ban is effective immediately.
“The second is suspended until the end of the 2023/24 season on the condition that he does not commit any further breaches of FA Rule E3 in the meantime.”
Klopp admitted his comments were “improper” as “they imply bias, question the integrity of the referee, are personal, offensive, and bring the game into disrepute”.
It was expected he would be hit with a two game ban, ruling him out of the rest of the campaign.
Instead, while Klopp will be in the stands for Liverpool’s game against Aston Villa on Saturday, he will be able to return to a pitchside view for the final game of the campaign at Southampton on May 28.
Klopp was charged the day after he accused Tierney of having an agenda against his team and giving biased decisions – despite failing to send off match-winner Diogo Jota in the dramatic 4-3 victory over Spurs on April 30.
The Liverpool boss, who pulled back from the brink of an altercation with the fourth official after Jota’s last-gasp winner, used his post-match press conferences to slam Tierney.

Klopp claimed: “We have our history with Tierney, I really don’t know what he has against us.
“He has said there [are] no problems but that cannot be true.”
Klopp also suggested that, when he was booked for his behaviour after Jota’s goal, Tierney said things to him “that were not ok”.
PGMOL bosses took the unusual step of publicly backing Tierney – and implicitly rebuking Klopp.
Indeed refs’ chief Howard Webb added only on Tuesday: “Based on what I witnessed, Paul Tierney behaved in an appropriate way and needed our support.”
The three-man disciplinary commission, which sat to hear the case on Monday – Klopp did not attend ahead of Liverpool’s win at Leicester – heard details of the touchline clash.
Fourth official John Brooks told Tierney: “Jurgen Klopp has just run and celebrated in my face. I think it’s a yellow card mate, minimum.”
The commission agreed: “Mr Brooks considered Mr Klopp’s conduct to be misplaced celebration rather than an aggressive or threatening move.”
Tierney then asked the VAR officials in Stockley Park for advice and was told a yellow card was sufficient.
When he went to issue the card, Tierney told Klopp: “Right. I have to show you yellow.
“It could be red, but I am going to show you yellow. He said yellow. We will give you the benefit of the doubt, don’t do anything more.”
I am sorry for some of the tone and content of my post-match interviewJurgen Klopp
In a written submission, Klopp said he was “sorry”, describing that as “the most important sentiment I must express”.
Klopp added: “I am sorry for some of the tone and content of my post-match interview.
“Although it was not my intention I accept now it appears that I was questioning Mr Tierney’s integrity.
“I take ownership of this. On reflection, the words I used were inappropriate.”
Klopp added that his responses were “driven by emotion and a feeling of unfairness”, pointed out how swiftly he had to carry out his post-match duties and that “English is not my primary language and at times what I mean to say and how I say it can conflict”.
He also pointed out that Tierney had been in charge of a number of Liverpool matches this season – seven of his 26 Prem appointments up to that game.
Klopp said: “That could be a reason for both the build-up of frustration governed by an inadvertent accumulation of incidents over an extended period.
“I was trying to express how I felt whilst dealing with the frustration I was feeling around a number of decisions made during the game.
“It was about feelings and emotions.
“To be absolutely clear, I know that Mr. Tierney, along with all other officials, do their work without any pre-conceived bias or prejudice.”
FA lawyers described Klopp’s comments as “a particularly serious example of misconduct involving media comments about a match official” and that they were “particularly more damaging” than typical post-match gripes.

The commission found that these were “allegations of persistent bias against a blameless referee”, “highly damaging” and “unacceptable”.
Despite that, it agreed that Klopp, who appeared to change tack in his next media appearance, had shown “genuine remorse”.

Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli cruelly denied chance to break Roberto Firmino’s five-year record after injury

ARSENAL star Gabriel Martinelli’s injury means he won’t break Roberto Firmino’s record for the most goals scored by a Brazilian in a Premier League campaign. The winger, 21, had already equalled the record of 15 in a season that was set by Firmino in the 2017/18 season.

Roberto Firmino will leave Liverpool at the end of the season and is reportedly a target of Barcelona.Credit: Getty
But an ankle injury inflicted on Martinelli by Arsenal target Moises Caicedo has ruled the Brazilian out for the rest of the season.
He had already equalled the record with a goal against Southampton during Arsenal’s 3-3 draw with Southampton back in March.
Martinelli was embroiled in controversy during Sunday’s 3-0 defeat to Brighton.
Minutes prior to his injury, the forward was lucky not to see red for an elbow on Brighton winger Kaoru Mitoma.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
And many have speculated that Caicedo’s tackle just minutes later was ‘revenge’ for the winger’s elbow on Mitoma.
The Arsenal winger was seen leaving the stadium in a protective boot.
With upcoming games against relegation threatened Nottingham Forest and a safe Wolves side, many thought Martinelli would go on to break the record held by Firmino since 2018.
The Liverpool forward, 31, is on a farewell tour after the club announced they would not renew his contract.

He will be joined in leaving Liverpool by James Milner, Naby Keita, and, former Gunner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Jurgen Klopp said he hopes the forward will be fit for Saturday’s clash against Aston Villa in order to give him a proper farewell.
Speaking on Monday night, Klopp said: “In the middle of everything, we have to win the game,
“But around that, we want to show the respect and appreciation and love we feel for not only Bobby but all the boys who will leave in the summer. It will be a special day with a difficult game in between.”
Barcelona are the current front-runners to sign Firmino on a free transfer. More

Man City challenge 115 Premier League charges and fume about ARSENAL fan barrister leading the case

MANCHESTER CITY are challenging the Premier League case against them – and even suggesting the KC running it could be biased because he is an ARSENAL fan.City were charged in February over a series of alleged financial dodges between 2008 and 2019.
Manchester City are challenging the charges made against them by the Premier LeagueCredit: Getty
Prem chief announced the case was in the hands of the head of its “independent judicial panel”, Murray Rosen KC.
He has the power to appoint himself as the chairman of the three-member disciplinary commission that will eventually hear the case.
But Rosen’s self-confessed status as a Gooner is ONE of the issues raised by City in what appears a full-on assault on the Prem process.
City are accused of hiding the true source of the club’s funding, only partially declaring salaries and bonuses, breaching Uefa and Prem Financial Fair Play regulations and obstructing the League investigation that was opened in 2018.
    READ MORE ON MAN CITY
That probe was underway for four YEARS before the charges were brought, during which period City and the Prem clashed in High Court and Appeal Court challenges.
Now it is understood that City, who have engaged £5,000-per-hour Lord Pannick KC as their legal lead, have pinpointed Rosen’s club allegiance as one plank of their argument.
Rosen described himself as a “member of the MCC and Arsenal FC”.
Prem chiefs are operating under a veil of silence over any aspect of the case and have added nothing to their bold website statement of the charges three months ago.
    Most read in Football

That includes whether Rosen has chosen to appoint himself – although the City challenge appears an obvious indicator – or the potential timescale for the case to be heard.
League rules leave open the punishment of relegation and an unlimited fine if the case is proved.
But in addition to the Rosen row, City’s lawyers have questioned the validity of the charges because of recent changes in the Premier League rulebook.
As of February 2022, those rules mandate any member club or official to answer questions and provide all information when requested to by League officers.
The rules add: “They must not delay at all in doing so, they must do so comprehensively, and they must do so on a co-operative and open basis.
“This includes volunteering relevant information and documents unknown to the board, obtaining such information and documents from other parties when able to do so, and ensuring that the appropriate individuals are made available for questioning by the board.”
Previous rules had merely stated: “Each club shall comply promptly and in full with any request for information made by the League.”
City, who declined to make any further comment, have denied all the allegations and promised “irrefutable evidence” to back up their defence.
But the latest City moves could further delay the process, with rival clubs already fearing that there will not be a hearing until potentially 2027. More

I’m a Man Utd fan and I hope we wave goodbye to two players who’ve flattered to deceive – but it all depends on takeover

Will it be Sir Jim? What about this eleventh hour Qatari bid?The truth is no one really knows until it’s officially announced and rubber stamped.
It’s been a long season of dramatic ups and downs for Manchester UnitedCredit: Getty
Most supporters have an eye on the fast-approaching summer window though, of which the ownership has a huge impact.
The stories and leaks from across Europe have already started and the ‘ITK’ Twitter accounts are dusting themselves down and preparing for another action packed ride on the huge wave that is otherwise known as social media transfer nonsense.
Pick our platform and choose your horse.
The well-run clubs will already have their plans in place, and no doubt in some cases, negotiations with potential summer arrivals will have already started.
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
Manchester United as we know under the Glazer ownership simply haven’t been run properly on or off the pitch, and there’s an anxious wait for manager Erik ten Hag between now and the summer – as we wait to find out who the new owners are.
If ten Hag is to build on this season, then it’s essential he is given everything he needs during the summer window.
Twelve months ago he made a solid start to his rebuild but United have wilted since the Carabao Cup success against Newcastle in February, and are limping over the Champions League line in the Premier League.
Sadly, the only way to get near City in the coming years – certainly while Pep Guardiola remains in charge – is to spend significant amounts on top quality players.

Does that mean that the only sensible option when it comes to ownership is the Qatari group then? More on this shortly.
Ten Hag mentioned at the weekend that he has provided the club with a list of what he feels are the very best players for Manchester United.
However, whether he gets players from list A,B or C, depends on who the new owners are.
It’s why it’s so difficult to predict what the future might hold for loan signings Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer. Both arrived in Manchester back in January, and if we are being completely honest, have probably flattered to deceive.
Wout Weghorst has struggled for goals since his January arrivalCredit: PA
If United are to get anywhere near City in the coming years, then neither should be considered as a permanent option beyond this summer.
So yes, those that are suggesting United’s standards should be so much higher than Sabitzer and Weghorst are right, but if the ownership doesn’t go the way of the Qatari’s then can Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS guide United back to Europe’s top transfer table and more importantly, do they have the funds to compete for and sign the best players?
Sabitzer and Weghorst’s future will tell us plenty about the direction this ‘new’ United are heading. I hope we wave them off, thank them for their service and chase/secure other elite options.
As United supporters will tell you, at Old Trafford nothing is ever that easy.

Blues fans can relax in the knowledge that their club has already closed deals for Brazilian midfielder Andre Santos, Ecuadorian wonderkid Kendry Paez and USA goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina.
But who else will the numerous scouts from European clubs be focused on when the action gets underway?
    Fabricio Diaz (Uruguay)
Uruguayan skipper Fabricio Diaz looks ripe for a move to Europe this summer after outgrowing his domestic league, where he has already made over 100 appearances for Liverpool of Montevideo.
An insatiable tackler and accurate passer of the ball, Diaz is very tactically mature for his age and also takes charge of all of his team’s set pieces.

Barcelona were reportedly close to getting a deal done for him last month, but it has since gone quiet while Premier League clubs have been deterred because he does not have an EU passport, making it virtually impossible for him to secure a UK work permit right now.

Giant Seongnam centre-back Kim Ji-soo is still only 18, but dominates in the air and in the tackle in a way that has drawn comparisons to fellow countryman Kim Min-jae of Napoli.
He has recently caught the eye of scouts from European clubs with Brentford understood to have offered a fee equivalent to his £560,000 buyout clause.
The K-League outfit know that Kim’s value could rocket if he impresses in Argentina.

Unlike his father, who was a classic number nine, Angel operates just off the front and can drift into wide areas.
He caught the attention of Premier League and Ligue 1 scouts at last summer’s Toulon tournament and could be leaving Colombia in the near future.

The current jewel of Santos’ youth set-up, Marcos Leonardo will wear the number nine shirt for the Samba stars in the tournament.
Fast and skilful, the 20-year-old scored 17 goals in 40 appearances last year and looks destined for a big future in the game.
Santos have reportedly slapped an £18million price tag on his head in the face of interest from Roma and Sporting Lisbon.

    Ignacio Miramon (Gimnasia La Plata)
Ignacio Miramon, a 19-year-old defensive midfielder, has been impressing in Argentina’s top flight this year and looks set to be a first choice for Under-20 head coach Javier Mascherano this month.

He has been scouted by the likes of Manchester United, Udinese, Fiorentina, Watford, Besiktas, Inter Miami and AC Milan ahead of the tournament.
Gimnasia will demand up to £9.5million, the value of his current release clause, for his signature. More

The duo are both on an eight-man shortlist of the league’s top ‘kids’ — despite having a combined age of 48.
Arsenal captain Odegaard and Brighton’s World Cup winner Mac Allister, both 24, have enjoyed terrific seasons.
And they have made it onto the list due to being 23 years old when the campaign began.
Joining the duo are Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka, 21, and Gunners teammate Gabriel Martinelli, also 21.

There’s room for two Newcastle aces in Alexander Isak and Sven Botman, both 23.
And the final two spots go to Man City striker Erling Haaland, 22, and Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, 21.
Fans have been left perplexed at the ages of most of the nominees.
