Nottingham Forest 1 Arsenal 0: Man City crowned champions as Gunners crumble and hosts go wild after avoiding relegation

The magnificent home crowd were probably expecting their battle to stay up to go to the wire.
Mikel Arteta and his team, having surrendered the initiative to Manchester City, hoped at least to make Pep Guardiola’s side earn it on Sunday.
But both clubs can now begin in earnest their reflections on what went right and wrong.
It really was an unfortunate week for it to emerge that Arsenal had a new mascot called “Win” at their training ground.
    READ MORE ON ARSENAL
The chocolate Labrador who bears that name is no doubt a lovely animal.
It’s just a shame that, in the final analysis, a lack of title pedigree told against her team.
And the end of their championship quest was confirmed by a Forest side that is a bit of a mongrel.
Steve Cooper deserves huge credit for giving a team that barked so loudly in the transfer market enough bite to retain top-flight status.

Captain Martin Odegaard could do nothing to prevent the Forest defeatCredit: Rex
From a huge squad of players drawn from all corners of the world, Cooper forged an effective unit that produced when it really mattered.
    And where it really mattered.
Of Forest’s 37 points, 30 of them have been won at their ramshackle but characterful home ground.
Arsenal were not the first to feel the power of the Trentside atmosphere and they did not lose the title in the East Midlands.
But some of the reasons why were in evidence.
Arteta’s squad simply was not deep enough.
Since centre-back William Saliba was injured, their defence has kept just one clean sheet.
And they ailed to maintain standards when key players chose the worst possible time to go through bad patches or make crucial errors.
In the decisive moment of this game, it was captain Martin Odegaard who erred – not for the first time in the run of games that has cost them so dearly.
Against Southampton, the Norwegian lost possession and the Saints broke to put themselves 2-0 ahead.
The same thing happened here. Odegaard’s bizarrely bad pass set Forest away and Taiwo Awoniyi scored his fifth goal in three games.
And that strike underlined something else that has gone against Arsenal: luck.
Gabriel was favourite to snuff out the danger but ended up claiming an unfortunate assist as he kicked the ball against the Nigerian’s right ankle and watched it fly past Aaron Ramsdale.
It was a gorgeous end-of-season day in Nottingham.
Some of the locals came into the famous old ground with faces almost as red as their shirts, after enjoying the spring sunshine.
And they left flushed with success, safe in the knowledge that they would be watching Premier League football here again next season.
It didn’t take long to work out why Arteta had reshuffled his back four, shifting Jakub Kiwior to left back, moving Ben White into the centre and recalling Thomas Partey to play at right-back.
Gabriel Jesus cut an incredibly frustrated figureCredit: PA
Arsenal needed height and physical presence to cope with an early Forest barrage that the home crowd absolutely loved.
Centre-back Moussa Niakhate’s long throws caused early mayhem in the Gunners’ penalty area, with bodies flying everywhere and the ball falling to safety more through luck than judgement.
Having weathered the early storm, Arsenal created the first real chances. Keylor Navas made a smothering save from an offside-looking Gabriel Jesus, then the Brazilian headed over after a corner.
But just as the volume was dropping a little, Forest had lift off.
Arsenal’s new-look defence was undone by one horribly-misplaced pass by Odegaard that somehow left Morgan Gibbs-White and Awoniyi 2v2 against the centre backs.
Gibbs-White’s pass was not the best but as Gabriel attempted to nick the ball away from the onrushing Awoniyi, he succeeded only in hitting it against the Forest striker.
Leandro Trossard was off target from a corner routine but the visitors were finding it hard to create openings from open play against their well-organised hosts.
At one point, White was stationary for several seconds as he tried to pick a pass that might pull the Forest’s players out of position.
Niakhate was booked in first-half stoppage time for taking too long to launch one of his bombs.
In contrast, Arteta sent his team out early for the second period.
Nevertheless they were almost caught cold. A free kick caused panic, albeit with a strong suspicion of offside, and Forest centre-back Felipe’s close-range effort was blocked behind for a corner.
Navas had barely made a significant save but was finally forced into action again on the hour.
White found Saka with a ball over the top but the Costa Rican keeper beat away the shot.
Jorginho fired wide from the resulting corner, and again a few minutes later, either side of Gibbs-White shooting into the side-netting.
Tempers began to fray on the pitch and on the touchline as time ticked down.
Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis put his head in his hands when six minutes of stoppage-time was announced.
    Read More on The Sun
But Arsenal never really looked like finding the equaliser to keep the title race mathematically alive.
And some stalwart defending ensured Forest were the ones celebrating on a day of mixed emotions. More

    Jump for joy
Man City stars jumped for joy and hugged each other as they clinched a third straight Premier League title.
Pep Guardiola’s men were expecting to wrap up another trophy by beating Chelsea on Sunday.

But Arsenal made life a whole lot easier by losing at relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest.
The result left City four points clear of Arsenal, who only have one game left this term.
And the champions were left to celebrate their successful defence of England’s top flight with three games to spare.
Incredible video footage shows City players sat together at the club’s training ground watching TV.
    City’s celebrations
MANCHESTER CITY’S heroes were careful not to go overboard with their celebrations after Arsenal handed them a third title in a row.
Pep Guardiola’s Premier League kings clearly believe they must add the FA Cup and Champions League to truly make a splash this season.

The Gunners’ 1-0 loss at Nottingham Forest means City are champions with three games to spare.
Etihad aces Jack Grealish, Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva leapt around together with delight as Forest held on to ensure staying up and guarantee Guardiola’s men the crown.
And sensational summer Erling Haaland responded by posting: “Always give your best. Always believe. It pays off. C’MON CITY!”
But there appeared to be one eye on the FA Cup final with Manchester United on June 3 and the Euro finale with Inter Milan 10 days later in many of the players’ responses.
At least centre-back Aymeric Laporte sounded a more jubilant tone.
He wrote: “What a season tho credit to absolutely everyone involved from top to bottom. Every one of use fought for this. More to come soon hopefully but we can already be proud of this one.”
And City’s all-time top scorer Sergio Aguero shared his old club’s “3 in a row!!!” title tweet.
    Pep’s future
Pep Guardiola has hinted he could LEAVE Manchester City as they clinched their fifth Premier League title in six seasons.
Guardiola gave a rather cryptic answer regarding his future in an interview before Arsenal’s defeat handed his side the Premier League title.
Speaking to Sky Sports about there being little to achieve should they lift all three trophies, he said: “First, we have to win it. [Then] you can ask me after and I will tell you how I feel and how I think.”
He was then pressed about whether he had thought about not having anything left to accomplish at Man City.
To which he replied: “Of course, we are three games away and we need each competition to do it.
“[But] You are going to tell me that our city rivals, Man Utd, will be an easy game?’
“What will happen against an Italian team, who don’t feel favourites?
“I’m thinking about that. And after, of course, if we achieve then I will tell you.”
    Lineker tweets
Gary Lineker has congratulated Man City for winning the Premier League.
However, he has issued a warning suggesting their dominance might change when Pep Guardiola leaves the club.
The Match of the Day presenter tweeted: “Congratulations to @ManCity on winning yet another title. Their 5th in 6 years. They’re very dominant at present, but suspect that will change post Pep.”
    Did Arsenal bottle run-in?
The discourse last week was Arsenal hadn’t bottled their title bid, more they had failed to keep pace with an astonishing Manchester City side.
It felt right then, but today’s performance has left a very different taste in the mouths of Gunners fans.
On April 1st, Mikel Arteta’s team beat Leeds United 4-1 to move eight points clear of Manchester City, albeit having played a game more.
Since then, the Londoners have let the superb standards they set in the first half of the season slip.

    Forest safe after Gunners scalp
They’ll be celebrating in Manchester this evening – but it will be nothing compared to the party in Nottingham.
Forest’s win means they have ensured another season in the top-flight, joining their two follow promoted sides Bournemouth and Fulham in staying up.
So it’s going to be two from three as Everton, Leeds and Leicester fight it out.
Two big clubs will be joining Southampton in the Championship, but who?

Match stats from the City Ground
Forest seal survival with a win in a game where they completed just 81 passes.
Hell, even their goal came from an overhit pass.
Will their fans care? Not one bit.

    Celebrations begin at the Etihad
The party is underway in Manchester.
It should be some atmosphere tomorrow when City host Chelsea.

    City seal title without playing
Manchester City won have won their third successive Premier League title, and their fifth in six seasons.
And in the end, they claimed it this weekend without having to kick a ball.
Arsenal’s limp surrender at Nottingham Forest this evening means they are unable to match City’s current total.
Eight points clear of the Citizens at the start of April, the Gunners have won just two of their last eight games – and are in very real danger of finishing ten points off the champions.

    Full time – Nott’m Forest 1-0 Arsenal
It’s all over! Manchester City are the Premier League champions!
But more importantly to 28,000 Nottingham Forest fans inside the City Ground, the Reds are staying up.
Steve Cooper’s side have beaten the drop thanks to some determined performances and big home scalps.
Given the money spent and the players brought in, it’s hardly a great escape or fairytale story, but credit must go to Cooper for steadying the ship when the Trent waters began to rock.

    Nott’m Forest 1-0 Arsenal – Nott’m Forest substitution
90+9. Navas stayed down after taking that cross, and it may not be a case of game management.
In fact, the Costa Rican goalkeeper is going to have come off for the final seconds.
On will come Wayne Hennessey to play a hero’s role.

    Nott’m Forest 1-0 Arsenal
90+7. Seconds remain. “Come on, you Reds!” chant the home fans.
Saka turns inside and stands up a cross to the far post that is claimed by the outstretched arms of Navas.
    A huge roar goes up!
Forest know they are there now.

    Nott’m Forest 1-0 Arsenal
90+5. Odegaard takes charge of matters, steps in off the right and lashes a shot wide of goal from 25 yards.
Arsenal: 82% possession and an xG of 0.53.
    Nott’m Forest 1-0 Arsenal
90+4. Steve Cooper is out on the touchline, indicating three more minutes to his players.
    Nott’m Forest 1-0 Arsenal
90+3. Aurier. Mangala. Lodi. Worrall. Niakhite.
The Forest players are standing up to everything that Arsenal are throwing at them.
