Ex-Newcastle star in last Champions League squad left a ‘caterpillar cake’ poo in fridge for disgusted team-mate

NEWCASTLE’S last Champions League squad included a player who left a “caterpillar cake” poo in a team-mate’s fridge. That was none other than Andy Griffin, who clocked up 104 appearances in six years at St James’ Park and was a starter under Sir Bobby Robson in Europe back in 2003.

That was the last time the Toon played in the Champions League but Eddie Howe’s men just ended that 20-year hoodoo after confirming their place in the top four with a goalless draw against Leicester.
However, Howe will be hoping his players will show more decorum than Griffin did two decades ago when he pulled off a vile prank on Bradley Orr.
The two Newcastle team-mates lived together in the same flat back in the early 2000s.
And the outlandish right-back decided to wind up his understudy.

However, Griffin arguably went overboard by leaving something disgusting in their fridge for his flatmate to find.
Orr told Under the Cosh: “Griff is one of my best mates, never mind football, one of my best friends, what a fella.
“I lived with him for a few years – he’s around the bend, nuts, horrible creature, but an absolute diamond.
“Griff was playing week in, week out at this point and you know when you have to stay behind to do extra and stuff.

“I come in the flat one day and he’s asleep on the couch, and I’ve gone off and gone into the fridge and there is a turd that long on the top shelf of the fridge.
“I’m like, ‘Are you for f*****g real?’ We’ve got to live here, this is our fridge, with a big log about that long.
“He wasn’t asleep, he was just down laughing his head off and I was like, ‘There’s something wrong with you mate’.
“You know when you s**t on your own doorstep, you have s**t in your own fridge. He thought it was just hilarious.”
Jon Parkin then asked: “Was it like a caterpillar cake on the fridge?”
Orr confirmed that was indeed the case as the panel burst out laughing. More

Nine players who could leave Man Utd in summer transfer clearout including Martial, Maguire and forgotten £35m man

MANCHESTER United are ready for a huge summer clearout with as many as nine players set to leave the club.Erik Ten Hag will look to continue to implement his philosophy and a number of players are deemed surplus to requirements.

The United manager is one point away from securing Champions League football, has already won the Carabao cup, and will hope to stop Manchester City from emulating United’s 1999 Treble by winning June’s FA Cup final against their local rivals.
But with a number of players hanging around from previous regimes, here are the nine players Ten Hag could axe from his squad this summer.
    Donny Van De Beek

Big things were expected when United laid out £35 million for Van De Beek back in the summer of 2020.

The Dutchman played a pivotal role in Ajax’s run to the 2019-20 Champions League semi-final, scoring the only goal in Ajax’s first leg 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
He was seen as one of the gems of the team alongside the likes of Matthijs De Ligt, Frenkie De Jong and Hakim Ziyech.
But the Dutchman has never really found a place for himself in the United side, racking up just two goals and two assists in his 60 appearances for the club.

The midfielder was bombed out on loan to Frank Lampard’s Everton last season where he underwhelmed as the Toffees narrowly avoided the drop.
    Most read in Football
The injured midfielder looks set to return before the end of the season and his former Ajax gaffer Ten Hag may yet give Donny another chance.
However United will look to recoup some of their £35 million outlay if the right offer arrives.
    Harry Maguire

Maguire, 30, has endured a season to forget for United after losing his place in the side despite being club captain.
The signing of Lisandro Martinez ushered in Ten Hag’s decision to drop Maguire as a first-choice centre back and he is yet to win his place back in the side despite the diminutive Argentinian’s injury.
Ten Hag has instead opted to play Victor Lindelof or Luke Shaw as a makeshift centre half to avoid playing the England international.
Maguire even found himself being used as an object of ridicule in Ghanaian parliament last December when an MP described his political rival as an “Economic Maguire” to reflect his opponent’s reckless spending policy.
Maguire cost United a whopping £80million when he signed from Leicester back in 2019 and while United would not recoup anything close to that, a fresh start for Maguire could be best for all parties.
    Anthony Martial
Martial walks off after being substituted against Bournemouth on Saturday.Credit: Getty
Martial arrived at United with the pressure of being British football’s most expensive teenager in 2015.
The £39m transfer even included a clause that would see United pay more if he went on to win the Ballon d’Or, showing just how high hopes were for the Frenchman when he signed.
An impressive start to life at United saw him score on his debut after coming on as a substitute against bitter rivals Liverpool.
He’d go on to rack up 14 goals in his debut season and establish himself as one of United’s most important players.
But injuries have been the story of much of Martial’s United career, meaning he has often found himself on the sidelines instead of nailing down a starting berth.
It appears Ten Hag has lost patience with the forward through a combination of his inability to stay fit and his attitude on the pitch when he does make it into United’s team.
He has one year remaining on his contract and United may look to offload him in order to make room for Tottenham’s Harry Kane this summer.
    David De Gea
David De Gea in action against Bournemouth.Credit: Getty
Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013, De Gea is United’s current highest earner on a whopping £375,000 per week.
The goalkeeper’s bumper contract runs out in June and reports suggest he would have to take a significant pay cut if he was to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
But Ten Hag’s philosophy of playing the ball out from the back combined with De Gea’s increasing tendency for high-profile errors means his position as first-choice United keeper is under threat.
United are looking at Porto shot-stopper Diogo Costa and Brentford’s David Raya as potential replacements for the Spain international.
The combination of De Gea’s need to take a pay cut as well as doubts over his No1 status may mean the keeper will leave for free this summer.
    Scott McTominay

The United academy product has made 22 appearances in all competitions this season, proving to be a reliable player for Ten Hag when called upon.
But United fans will feel the Scot could be upgraded upon, having seen the transformative effect a world-class defensive midfielder in the shape of Casemiro has had on their team.
United have kept tabs on West Ham’s Declan Rice amid claims he may have played his last game at the London Stadium.
With West Ham slapping a £100 million price tag on Rice, United might cash in on reported interest from Newcastle in McTominay to fund a move for Rice.
    Alex Telles
Telles in action for loan club SevillaCredit: Getty
United loaned Telles to Sevilla at the start of this season, having run out of patience with the left back’s form.
The Brazil international has made 50 appearances in a United shirt since signing for £15.4 million from Porto in 2020.
Despite scoring eight goals during his time at United, it’s the defensive side of his game that has seen him deemed surplus to requirements.
    Eric Bailly
Eric Bailly has spent this season on loan at Marseille.Credit: Getty
Bailly established himself as a favourite of Jose Mourinho’s after signing for £30 million in 2016.
The Ivorian international was named in the Europa League squad of the season as Mourinho’s men won the 2017 trophy, although, he was suspended for the final.
Persistent injuries have meant that he has since struggled to hold down a first-XI place in recent seasons and he has spent this year on loan at Marseille.
His contract expires next summer and United will be keen to get a fee for him if possible.
    Wout Weghorst

The man on loan from Burnley arrived at Old Trafford this January to bolster United’s attacking options.
The Dutch forward caught the eye of United bosses after impressing on loan at Besiktas, scoring nine goals in 18 games during his time in Turkey.
But he’s failed to replicate that at United, scoring once in 24 games.
Given his scoring record, it’s highly unlikely United will make the move permanent.
    Marcel Sabitzer

The Austria international was seen as one of Europe’s hottest talents when he moved to Bayern Munich back in 2021.
But he struggled to establish himself in the Bayern side ahead of the likes of Joshua Kimmich.
The midfielder was brought in on an opportunistic loan in January in order to deputise for an injured Christian Eriksen.

Despite making 18 appearances this season, Sabitzer has often found these opportunities coming from the bench.
With Eriksen fit again and United’s rumoured interest in the likes of Declan Rice, United may not make the move permanent. More

Man Utd star is ‘trying to persuade Neymar to join’ after club hold talks with PSG over Brazil superstar

Now L’Equipe claim talks have taken place between the Old Trafford club and Paris Saint-Germain over the possible blockbuster transfer.
It is suggested the French giants are open to selling the world’s most expensive footballer – which could leave Kylian Mbappe as the undisputed main man at the club with Lionel Messi also set to depart the Parc des Princes.
And the report adds that one key United man is doing his bit to lure Neymar to Manchester.
Casemiro plays with the £198million superstar for the Brazil national team – along with current United men Antony and Fred.

And as his incredible debut season draws to a close, he is hoping to have another big impact by convincing Neymar to make the switch so they can play alongside each other at club level, too.
Neymar, 31, is undoubtedly one of the most talented footballers of his generation and would bring plenty of flair and trophy-winning experience to Erik ten Hag’s squad.
One Red Devils fan labelled their instrumental midfielder “Agent Casemiro” for his tactics.
However, reports suggest as many as four Premier League clubs are chasing after Neymar’s signature – including Champions League-bound Newcastle.

The injury-hit PSG forward has managed 13 goals and 11 assists in just 20 Ligue 1 games this season.

Jamie Carragher issues grovelling apology to Man Utd star after writing him off before season had barely started

JAMIE CARRAGHER has apologised for his misjudgement of Manchester United star Lisandro Martinez at the start of the season. The Sky Sports pundit took aim at Martinez back in August, claiming he was too short for the Premier League and would struggle to perform.

Jamie Carragher backtracked on his earlier assessment of Lisandro Martinez
Lisandro Martinez has been brilliant for Manchester United this season keeping eight clean sheets in his 27 league appearances
This came following his side’s horrendous start to the campaign as they lost 4-0 to Brentford.
Carragher sat down with Red Devils legend Gary Neville on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football to discuss their end of season awards and the former Liverpool man swallowed his pride to apologise to Martinez for his early criticism.
Awarding Martinez his ‘Surprise of the Season’ award, Carragher said: “Every player has weaknesses, whatever that may be. Whether it’s physically, technically, and the best players hide their weaknesses.
“We’ve all got them, no one’s the perfect player and I just looked at that and thought ‘how can you overcome that [his height] in the Premier League’

“I mean I wasn’t the tallest centre back and I used to go into games worried I was going to get found out and bullied in the air. Sometimes you lose big challenges for big goals. I thought he’s two or three inches shorter than me.
“But I think, when you’re talking about the role of Casemiro, I think it’s a massive drop off in the Manchester United team when Martinez isn’t in. Defensively but also his ability on the ball when playing out from the back.
“He’s a warrior, he’s a leader, and when you think of that spine of the team, him and Casemiro have made a huge difference.
“So, apologies Lisandro and all Man Utd fans, if you can stop tweeting me about Lisandro Martinez that would be great.”

Martinez has had a terrific campaign for United and Argentina.
The feisty centre-back won the World Cup with his country earlier in the season and has already picked up domestic silverware with the Carabao Cup in February.
He will have the chance to put the cherry on top of his season at Wembley in June when the Red Devils take on their noisy neighbours Manchester City in the FA Cup final.
United have also all but guaranteed Champions League football at Old Trafford next season with only a point needed from their remaining two games to return to Europe’s elite. More

Game Week 36 completes the 2022/23 Dream Team season – make sure to use any remaining transfers!

This is an important public service announcement. All Dream Team gaffers should be aware that Game Week 36 will be the last Game Week of the 2022/23 season.
That means the final day of the Premier League campaign falls under the same umbrella as the FA Cup final, Europa Conference League final and the Champions League final.
Sunday promises to be a tense day for Leicester, Leeds and Everton supporters
To be clear, every player will be subject to lockout from 4:30pm Sunday when every team kicks off at the same time, meaning Dream Team managers won’t be able to make any transfers after that time.
May’s transfer refresh was the last batch of the season so Dream Team bosses should use any remaining transfers before Sunday’s games get underway to tailor their XI to the final fixtures.
Naturally, players likely to appear in the last round of league games plus one (or two) of the subsequent finals seem best placed to register serious points.
Manchester United host Fulham before yet another visit to Wembley, the site of their Carabao Cup victory a few months ago.
West Ham travel to relegation-threatened Leicester before their meeting with Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final in Prague.
However, Manchester City are once again the central protagonists as they will compete three times in Game Week 36.
Manchester City will play three times in Game Week 36
The Premier League champions visit Brentford on Sunday, face their local rivals in the FA Cup the following Saturday, and take on Inter in the Champions League final a week later as they chase a historic treble.

Pep Guardiola may opt for a second-string starting line-up again this coming weekend – the likes of Sergio Gomez (£4.6m), Kalvin Phillips (£1.2m) and Rico Lewis (£3.9m) were given rare starts against Chelsea in Game Week 35 – but even if that’s the case, the popular favourites will surely be reinstalled for the two major finals.
Whatever strategies Dream Team gaffers decide upon, it’s crucial everyone understands that (a) any remaining transfers need be implemented before 4:30pm on Sunday and (b) there will be no transfers issued on the first Friday of June. More

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, an agreement on personal terms is “90 per cent done” between the Merseysiders and the versatile midfielder.
However, Liverpool will have to be quick as the Argentina international’s contract includes a fixed amount that can only be triggered in June.
Klopp’s side will have to act swiftly to also avoid a potential transfer war with Chelsea as their incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino is a big fan of the 24-year-old.
Romano told his YouTube show Here we Go: “There is a fixed amount into the contract of Alexis Mac Allister at Brighton.

“We could say that this is working like a release clause. Yes, there is an exit clause for Alexis Mac Allister to leave Brighton.
“Formally, it’s something that Alexis Mac Allister’s camp and Brighton decided when he signed a new contract months ago.
” In that moment they decided the fixed amount for Alexis Mac Allister to leave the club in the summer and to leave the club in June. So early in the window.
