Man Utd 2 Fulham 1: Ten Hag equals record with 27th home win of the season as Red Devils seal third place finish

THESE sunny final afternoons at Old Trafford used to involve giving out silverware and spraying champagne. The last time that happened here was a decade ago as Sir Alex Ferguson bid farewell with Manchester United back on their perch.

But United matched a club record 27 home wins in a single season after beating Fulham 2-1, and there was a golden glove to be had.
Awarded to David De Gea with a table-topping 17 clean sheets in the Premier League this season.
While he could not add to that on this occasion he earned an incredible roar for his 26th-minute penalty save diving low to his left to deny Aleksandar Mitrovic.
It was only his sixth penalty save from 36 taken against him in the Premier League and his first at Old Trafford since 2014.

The Stretford End showed their appreciation as he held his arms aloft towards them after the fine stop.
But was it also a farewell gesture?
After 12 years and 544 appearances for the club this could be his last at Old Trafford with the FA Cup Final still to come.
His new contract remains unsigned, his current one runs out in the summer.

Despite his longevity and heroics that have earned him the fans and players player of the year four times at the club, doubts remain after some high profile clangers.
There are also question marks about the 32-year-old’s distribution but his reactions and shot stopping cannot be questioned.
As the man himself said earlier this season is that and clean sheets not what it’s all about.
That pen would have put Fulham two-nil up after Kenny Tete had met Willian’s near post corner with a thumping header to give the visitors a 19th-minute lead.
United responded and after the thrilling Alejandro Garnacho hit the underside of the bar Jadon Sancho struck.
It was the 39th minute and Bruno Fernandes little turn gave him room to feed Fred.
A challenge the Brazilian by Tete brought brief calls for a penalty but as the ball broke for Sancho and he poked it over the line they quickly turned to cheers.
The winner in the 55th minute came when a terrific slide rule ball from Fred found fantastic Fernades who clipped a shot past the advancing Bernd Leno.
Victory equalled a club record 27 wins at home in all competitions, set in 2002-03.
Old Trafford is a fortress again, Ten Hag just needs to sort out storming the ramparts of their enemies.
    So where are United at?
There was a telling line in the match day programme as the season was assessed.
“For all the strides taken this season, Ten Hag’s United are still closer to the start of the journey than the end.”
Indeed in the last decade there have been pointers towards a bright future not least when Jose Mourinho guided the club to second place a season after winning two trophies.
Ole Solskjaer also got them to runners-up spot.
Louis van Gaal thought winning the FA Cup would make him a hero, and then he was booed as he appeared on the big screen climbing the steps at Wembley.
The bar has been set incredibly high here and the fact that those runners-up spot and this season’s third placed finish never really hinted at a title challenge tells the real tale of where the club is still at.
But, but, there is real optimism.
The Carabao Cup has been won, the FA Cup final is to come and Champions League football will return.
    The fans have heroes again.
Marcus Rashford in the form of his life with a career’s best 30 goals.
Casemiro has been a contrast to other big-name stars towards the end of their careers who came for a pay day.
    He has been inspirational.
After watching from Spain as United went down 4-0 to Brentford in the second game of the season he sent the message “Tell them I’ll sort it” and what an impact he has had.
With Raphael Varane the two multiple Champions League winners from Real Madrid bring a calm assurance.
Then what about Lisandro Martinez. Too small to be a Premier League centre-back we were told. Well he was walking tall before an injury sadly curtailed his season.
Elsewhere Christian Eriksen has shown his class once more while players already here have been improved.
Garnacho at 18-years-old gave us another glimpse in this game of what will surely be a spectacular career going forward.
So yes, plenty of reasons to be cheerful but now it is about taking it on to the next step.
An FA Cup final win next weekend and denying neighbours Manchester City the treble would send them flying into the summer.
    That is some task.

With that in mind Ten Hag shuffled his pack against Fulham and also revealed that the absent Antony’s ankle injury is not as bad as first feared and he could yet make that Wembley date.
A date that will remind United how far they still have to go, or increase the hope that the future is indeed bright under Ten Hag. More

But after an hour, Loftus-Cheek came off for Carney Chukwuemeka, who put in a solid performance against Manchester United in midweek.
Loftus-Cheek hugged Enzo Fernandez and Cesar Azpilicueta as he trudged off the pitch.
And before he left the field of play he made sure to turn around and wave to all four corners of Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea fans stood up and gave Loftus-Cheek a standing ovation before chanting his name for likely the final time.

Tributes also flooded in on social media.
One Chelsea fan said: “Ruben Loftus Cheek with what looks like a farewell goodbye, you’ll be missed.”
Another added: “If that’s it for Ruben Loftus-Cheek in a Chelsea shirt, thank you, RLC. An outstanding career in blue since he signed as a young kid.”

And this Blues supporter went with: “Thank you for everything if this is the last game for Loftus Cheek, always a dependable player for us over the years and had a great attitude.”
Loftus-Cheek has been heavily linked with a move away from Chelsea this summer and has attracted interest from numerous clubs.
AC Milan look to be leading the race and are reportedly in contact with the West London club over a move in the summer window.
Loftus-Cheek has been on loan with Crystal Palace and Fulham before in the Premier League.
He made his breakthrough at Chelsea in the 2014/15 season under Jose Mourinho.
But it was under Maurizio Sarri where he enjoyed his best spell, scoring 10 goals in all competitions.

Loftus-Cheek’s career at Chelsea, however, was plagued by injury and inconsistency.
His move away from the club is said to be imminent, with fellow Cobham graduate Mason Mount also expected to leave this summer. More

According to De Telegraaf in Netherlands, the 31-year-old forward struck a rival Twente fan.
And Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad report that it followed after a fan made “racist” comments to Berghuis’ team-mate Brian Brobbey

Berghuis started his career with Twente in 2011 but only spent a year there before moving on.

In 2015, he signed for Watford under Quique Sanchez Flores as part of a huge summer of spending.

But it has been a frustrating campaign for the Eredivisie giants, who surrendered the title to Feyenoord.

Vinicius Jr was shown support from his club, manager Carlo Ancelotti and fans following the shocking attacks.
And the campaign against racial abuse spread back to the winger’s homeland as Flamengo and Cruzeiro stood with the player.
Vinicius Jr’s ex-club Flamengo wore shirts with ‘Vini Jr’ on the front and staged a seated protest with Cruzeiro for the first 30 seconds.
In the Maracana Stadium stands, thousands of fans made a tifo which read “everyone with Vini Jr”.

Valencia were hit with a partial closure ban of the south stand Mario Kempes at the Mestalla Stadium, for three matches.
Vinicius Jr was shown a red card during the game after a bust-up between two players.
He was dismissed after VAR showed him catching Hugo Duro’s face with his arm.
Although the Valencia striker did not receive any punishment for getting the Brazilian in a headlock moments before.

Vinicius Jr reported abuse from home supporters during his team’s 1-0 defeat away to Valencia.
He pointed out the alleged offenders to the referee, with the match temporarily halted for around nine minutes.
Vinicius Jr sarcastically applauded and gave a peace sign to the home crowd as he left the field.
His ban was later overturned due to VAR failing to show the referee the full footage of the incident.
Meanwhile, seven people have been arrested in Spain on suspicion of the racial abuse aimed at Vinicius Jr and hanging an effigy of the player from a bridge near the club’s training ground.
Vinicius Jr was left out of Real’s next two matches against Sevilla and Rayo Vallecano.
But his team-mates all wore No. 20 shirts in his honour before the game against Vallecano, as did Real’s women’s and basketball teams.

Thomas Tuchel’s men were 1-0 in front at the time through Kingsley Coman, with victory vital in their hunt for 11 crowns in a row.
Koln midfielder Dejan Ljubicic hit a late penalty leveller but Jamal Musiala smashed an outstanding clincher for Bayern on 89 minutes.
That left Borussia Dortmund needing to turn a 1-0 deficit at home to Mainz into victory to steal the crown
Niklas Sule did notch a leveller six minutes into stoppage time but there was no time left for Dortmund to nick a winner.

And some observers were quick to pour cold water on Bayern’s triumph.
Sprinklers popped up outside their penalty area during a testing moment in the 72nd minute against Koln.
Bayern were handed possession back – and then picked up the title too.
Fans then showered social media with a mixture of conspiracy theories and amusement.

But perhaps the most cynical response on social media was: “That’s an insane way of rigging the game lmao there is no way that’s a mistake.”
Tuchel didn’t refer to the incident afterwards but said: “We had the last shot and the last answer to all the questions with Jamal.
“We’ll take it, but it was a crazy, crazy afternoon.”
Yet minutes after clinching another historic success, Bayern announced the sackings of CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic.
Tuchel said: “Instead of celebrating, we now have another issue” manager Thomas Tuchel said in response to the sackings.” More

Clinching a top four spot in the Champions League is considered the holy grail, with each team securing a place in the Champions League group stage.
This is also the case for La Liga, the Bundesliga and Serie A after Europe’s top four leagues negotiated sixteen automatic places in Europe’s elite club competition in 2017.
Liverpool were the last Premier League team to finish fourth and NOT go straight into the group stages, having needed to beat Hoffenheim in a play-off tie in 2017.
Now, even finishing fourth in the Premier League DOES guarantee a place in the Champions League group stages.
