Todd Boehly could give Chelsea four new names if Blues move from beloved Stamford Bridge without fans’ support

WORRIED Chelsea fans might reckon it’s a Bridge too far – after AI came up with four dodgy suggestions if the club has to change its name.Todd Boehly’s £4billion boardroom battle with co-owner Behdad Eghbali coincides with plans for a new £1bn Bernabeu-style stadium.Chelsea are pondering a new stadium inspired by the BernabeuCredit: Canva’s AIChelsea owner Todd Boehly is embroiled in a £4bn power struggleCredit: AlamyBut an odd clause means the Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO) could enforce a NAME CHANGE for the club if they disapprove of a move away. Not even Roman Abramovich managed to convince enough of the 14,000-strong group of fans of the need to relocate, yet that is the task the far less popular American faces. But if the fans refuse, they could face moniker misery.SunSport tasked ChatGPT with exploring new names for Chelsea that Boehly could impose.READ MORE CHELSEA NEWSAnd the result was four options ranging from boring to bemusing. In fact, fans might feel it’s a case of Stamford Cringe when they hear a couple of these AI nominations. The app first revealed four issues it decided was vital to throw into the mix for such an important project. It branded them: historical context, cultural significance, branding and marketability, and fan sentiment. Most read in FootballFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSAnd if that sounded awesomely academic, sure enough the conclusions were more suited to a degree than a dugout.More PhD than PSG, more Uni than Rooney… with one shocking exception.Premier League’s Biggest Spenders: Top 10 SeasonsAI was obviously on a ChatGP-tea break when it came up with the rather lazy opening offering of “Chelsea United FC”.It justified this entry-level suggestion by saying: “This name retains the geographical identity while fostering a sense of unity and inclusivity, appealing to a broader fan base.”Next up was a name with more than a hint of a franchise or perhaps a gloomy mood sweeping across the capital – “London Blues FC”.ChatGPT believes this “emphasizes the club’s geographical location and its traditional color, while also creating a distinct identity that could resonate with international fans”.But it’s the final two ideas that risk alienating fans most.Somehow finding a way onto the shortlist was “Chelsea Heritage FC”.Apparently this “reflects the club’s historical significance and commitment to its roots, appealing to both traditionalists and modern fans”.As for the final alternative, it could also have doubled for ChatGPT’s dissertation title for a Masters in Marketing – “Chelsea Global FC”.The justification? “This name positions the club as a global entity, reflecting its international fan base and aspirations.”READ MORE SUN STORIESMeanwhile, sadly, Chelsea can’t even be sure which name will be leading the boardroom for much longer – as Boehly and Eghbahli both want to buy each other out.So that’s another issue where, so far at least, a “chat” does not appear to have produced the right outcome!Chelsea will lose their soul by leaving Stamford BridgeBy Matt PennJUST what London needs – another £1billion bowl-shaped, soulless football stadium. No offence to Spurs, because theirs looks great, but it’s not like they had years of title-winning history to celebrate at White Hart Lane.Arsenal moved on from Highbury a couple of years after their last Premier League title win in 2004, and to no avail, they’ve been chasing that glory ever since. And the less said about West Ham’s move from Upton Park, the better. The Olympic Stadium pales in significance to Upton Park, where binoculars weren’t needed to see the pitch from Row Z.It’s no secret Chelsea fans have become disillusioned with the club since Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali took over from Roman Abramovich two years ago.The sacking of two full-time managers in that time, a 12th-place finish in the league, no European football, billions spent on Brazilian teenagers you’ve never heard of and civil war between the owners have turned the club into a laughing stock.Seems like the perfect time to revamp plans to leave Stamford Bridge, doesn’t it?According to The Guardian, Chelsea are in talks to move to a new 60,000-seater site in Earl’s Court, something they’ve attempted before.Chelsea are said to have made plans for the Lillie Bridge depot site as an area that could be developed in a move that could cost hundreds of millions.Forget that so much else still needs fixing on the pitch, that the results are still not going the way they should, that players still can’t seem to click on a consistent basis. The owners, who are said to be looking to buy each other out already, might not think it, and the seats might be a little rusty, but fans do value tradition. The Bridge has been a place supporters can call home every other Saturday. It’s raw, the stands are close to the pitch, it has four sides, and most importantly, it’s owned by the fans. For any deal to go through, Chelsea Pitch Owners (CPO), a group made up of over 14,000 fans, have to approve a move away from the 42,000-seater stadium. On the other hand, redvelopment of Stamford Bridge would see the team move away from the stadium for a number of years, likely double the three years Tottenham spent at Wembley. But why not overhaul each stand one-by-one? Both Liverpool and Fulham had stands refurbished and they were able to stay put. There are also plans for Crystal Palace to do the same.If Boehly and Eghbali are so desperate to put money at the forefront of their decision-making, then go about it in a way which will appease fans.Sadly, football isn’t really about fans anymore, and it’d be easy to say Chelsea will lose their soul if they leave Stamford Bridge. But you fear they already have. Why Man Utd are confident they won’t break PSR rules despite announcing £113m loss last season

TRANSFER spending to bolster Erik ten Hag resulted in Manchester United losing £113m last season.Despite record revenues of £661.8m in the financial year to June 30, United posted a nine-figure loss.Man Utd transfer spending to bolster Erik ten Hag’s side has resulted in a £113m loss at the club last termCredit: AlamyDespite the loss the club believe they are safely inside Profitability and Sustainability Rules requirementsCredit: GettyThe club pin-pointed spending on wages and transfers as a significant factor in the latest annual financial results. The club’s incomings last summer saw Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund, Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir for a combined £183.5m including add-ons.But despite United’s new managing structure under Sir Jim Ratcliffe green-lighting another £182m in transfer spending this summer – although sales recouped £87m – the Old Trafford outfit remain bullish they are safely inside Profitability and Sustainability Rules requirements. And the club is pushing ahead with plans to axe 250 jobs – for an annual saving of up to £38m.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLUnited’s published figures – including half a year under the new regime – showed the club made a record  £137.1m through the gate, with 171,000 fans on the season ticket waiting list. While Prem clubs are only allowed to make “permitted losses” of £105m over three seasons, football accountancy allows transfer fees paid to be “amortised” over contract lengths of up to five years while receipts such as the £26m received from Napoli for Scott McTominay can be counted in full.Deductions are also made for investment and spending on stadium costs, women’s football and youth development, with United understood to remain confident they will not breach the PSR limit when their accounts are handed over to Prem bosses later this year.Ratcliffe’s new-look upper-tier management included the appointments of chief executive officer Omar Berrada – who formerly held a senior role at Manchester City – sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSThat was part of the club’s “strategic review” which brought what have been described as “one-off exceptional costs” of £47.8m as part of a long-term streamlining programme overseen by Ratcliffe.Despite last season’s eighth-placed Prem finish – United’s worst league performance since 1990 – ten Hag’s FA Cup triumph over City allowed him to keep his job, with summer arrivals including Matthijs de Ligt, Joshua Zirkzee, Manuel Ugarte, Noussair Mazraoui and Leny Yoro adding to his squad.Man Utd wages 2024-25 revealedRatcliffe has committed himself to a £230m cash injection by the end of the year, £50m of which will pay for the required upgrade of the club’s Carrington training base. While failing to qualify for the Champions League will mean an estimated £30m European revenue drop, the club still anticipates income reaching up to £670m this season.Berrada promised: “We are all extremely focused on working collectively to create a bright future with football success at the heart of it.“Ultimately, the strength of Manchester United is driven by the passion and loyalty of our supporters.“Our clear objective is to return the club to the top of European football.“Everyone at the club is aligned on a clear strategy to deliver sustained success both on and off the pitch, for the ultimate benefit of our fans, shareholders, and hugely diverse range of stakeholders.” More

If Arsenal lose to Tottenham they have one game to save their season – and it’s against Man City seven days later

PREMIER LEAGUE titles aren’t won in September. But they can be lost. And that is what Arsenal fans – and perhaps even boss Mikel Arteta – may be starting to fear.Arsenal have some major injury concerns ahead of the North London DerbyCredit: GettyMartin Odegaard is expected to miss Sunday’s match due to an injury sustained on international dutyCredit: SplashRiccardo Calafiori is also a doubtCredit: GettyDeclan Rice will serve a one-match suspension against Tottenham after his red card vs BrightonCredit: GettyBecause if the Gunners fail to beat local rivals Tottenham on Sunday, they will be under huge pressure to win against title rivals City at the Etihad a week later. And defeat by Pep Guardiola’s side would put Arsenal up to eight points behind City with only five games gone.Which, given the fact that Guardiola’s winning machine tends to hit absolute top gear only in the second half of the season, would feel like an almost impossible gap to close. The injury to captain Martin Odegaard which is likely to keep him out of both big Premier League games, either side of the awkwardly-scheduled Champions League trip to Atalanta, underlines the inferiority of Arsenal’s squad.Read More in FootballIn the summer transfer window, the Gunners added cover in key positions: Riccardo Calafiori in defence, Raheem Sterling on the wing and Mikel Merino in midfield. It was very unfortunate that Merino suffered a significant injury in his first training session, especially with Declan Rice out of the North London derby because of suspension.Jorginho is a decent deputy to play alongside Thomas Partey, at least. But the problem is that Arteta has no-one who can replace Odegaard’s qualities at a high enough level in attacking midfield (although it might have been less challenging if Emile Smith Rowe had not been sold). Most read in FootballFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSArsenal face Tottenham this weekendCredit: AFPThe Gunners face Manchester City next weekCredit: PAKevin De Bruyne has remained fully fit this seasonCredit: ReutersYou can argue that there are very few players in the world who could. But consider how City skipper coped, despite losing captain Kevin De Bruyne for half of last season.Arsenal fans raging as ‘smug’ Norway boss ‘cracks joke’ about Martin Odegaard’s devastating injury on live TVDe Bruyne featured in only 18 Premier League matches. It is true that City lost three games during the time he was sidelined with a hamstring problem and Arsenal streaked ahead. But over the course of the season, it did not matter. Julian Alvarez, in particular, and City’s star-studded squad in general, were able to contribute enough that the Belgian’s lack of gametime did not stop them winning another title. After a De Bruyne-less City side went down 1-0 at Aston Villa on December 6, they did not lose another game, winning 19 of their 23 remaining fixtures.Don’t forget, either, that Erling Haaland missed a handful of games at the turn of the year. Fortunately for Guardiola, they were mostly against lower-level opposition and City won four out of five.Which brings us to another issue – luck.No-one is saying that Odegaard will be unavailable nearly as long as De Bruyne was. But the quirks of the fixture list  – or a conspiracy, if you’re a particularly rabid Arsenal fan – mean his ankle problem has come at a really bad time. You can still see a Gunners side without Rice and Odegaard finding a way to beat Spurs. But the absence of Odegaard from the Etihad, where Arsenal have not won a league game since January 2015, would be a massive blow to their chances.Looking at it the opposite way, Arteta was very fortunate with injuries last season.Rice and Odegaard were among six players to start at least 34 of the 38 Premier League games, with William Saliba playing every single minute. Another four players made at least 30 appearances as starters or subs. That good fortune appears to have run out.Meanwhile, the signs are Liverpool might well emerge as City’s biggest challengers. The Reds have a pretty kind run of league fixtures between now and October 27, when they are due to face Arsenal at the Emirates. The longer Odegaard is out, the bigger the potential gap by then.READ MORE SUN STORIESArteta needs his full squad to step up, on Sunday and in the coming weeks as the dual challenge of competing in the Premier League and Champions League resumes. If they do not, after two seasons of fading in the final straight of the title race, Arsenal could be all but out of it while there are still plenty of leaves on the trees.Arsenal have a tricky start to the season More
