Hollywood legend lays into David Moyes’ West Ham tactics after ‘diabolical, depressing season’

A HOLLYWOOD legend has slammed David Moyes’ West Ham tactics after a “diabolical, depressing season.”That’s despite the Scot leading his side to the verge of Europa Conference League glory.

The Hammers struggled to impress in the Premier League this term after last year’s impressive seventh-place finish.
Declan Rice and Co ended up finishing 14th after a tense relegation fight, finishing just six points above the drop.
And fans are hoping to see a major improvement next term, even though their talismanic midfield captain is likely to leave this summer.
However, things have been very different for the Hammers abroad.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
They have enjoyed a fine European campaign in the Conference League.
And they are just one match away from getting their hands on the winners’ trophy – and a spot in next year’s Europa League – after setting up a tasty final against Fiorentina.
Even so, Hollywood actor and famous fan Ray Winstone reckons it’s mainly been a season to forget for supporters.
Despite West Ham’s success on the continent, their Premier League journey has been nothing short of “depressing.”

And Winstone insists Moyes’ tactics have not been up to scratch for a 38-game campaign.
He told talkSPORT: “I’m very happy [with Europe] but it’s been a diabolical season.
“You look at them and you think, the way they’re playing in the league, and then you see them in Europe…
“We’ve actually got a very good side but tactically it’s been wrong in the Premier League.
“It’s a bright light in a very depressing season. I think at the beginning of the season we had [too many] new players come in.
“This happened at Chelsea as well, we brought too many players in too quickly.”
Winstone also hit out at Uefa for allocating the Conference League final to Prague’s Eden Arena — which holds just 20,000 fans.
West Ham were only given 5,780 of the available tickets.

And Winstone added: “I was supposed to go but it all went pear shaped.
“It’s up in the air a little bit at the moment, whether I go or not is another thing but I shall be watching it.” More

Inside abandoned stadium of Premier League club which was only ground to have a pub on each corner but now lies in ruins

GRIFFIN PARK was until recently one of the most vibrant stadiums in the Football League.Despite its meagre capacity of 12,764, the stadium was iconic for the fact it was the only English stadium to have a pub on every corner of the ground.

But since Brentford made the move to the Gtech Community Stadium in September 2020, their spiritual home has been left in a state of ruin.
All that remains now are the corners of some stands which are covered in weeds.
The stadium was home to Brentford since 1904, when it was acquired as an orchard from Fuller’s brewing company.
A team of volunteers cut down the trees in order to make room for the Bees’ former home, in exchange for being able to keep the wood.

True to its reputation of being the only ground with a pub on every corner, the name of Griffin Park was inspired by one of the corner pubs named ‘The Griffin’.
The others were: The Princess Royal, The New Inn and The Brook.
The stadium was built with a 20,000 seater capacity in mind, alongside hopes that it could be increased to 30,000.
However for much of Brentford’s early history, the ‘stadium’ consisted of one grandstand.

It wasn’t until Brentford’s debut season in the first division in 1935-36 that the ground finally had four stands.

In the 1980s Griffin Park began taking the shape it would until its closure, with seated stands nestled between the four pubs.
For much of Brentford’s history, their lower league status did not necessitate improvement, which led to Griffin Park having an old-school look.
Speculation around moving away from their home began around 2002, but it wasn’t until current owner Matthew Benham became involved with the club that plans to move accelerated.
Benham made his money in finance before moving to sports betting in 2001, which enabled him to make his millions.
He implemented a gambling model alongside former business partner and now Brighton owner Tony Bloom which allowed their company to predict matches more accurately than the bookies.
After the club fell into financial trouble under former owner Ron Noades, Benham began investing in the club as a ‘mystery investor’ in 2003.

Benham gradually expanded his control over the Bees’ by agreeing to take on their loans before becoming the full owner of the club in 2012.
The club earned promotion to The Championship in 2014 and final approval for the building of the Gtech Community Stadium was granted in September 2016.
With the club flirting with promotion to the Premier League both in the 2014-15 season and 2018-19, questions were asked as to whether Griffin Park could safely be used in England’s top tier.
The club were expected to apply for special dispensation to remain at Griffin Park while construction on the Gtech was completed.
Much to the frustration of Brentford fans, they were unable to say goodbye to the ground due to the final season at Griffin Park being played during the Covid-impacted 2020-21 season.

The club earned planning permission to build 75 family homes on the site of Griffin Park, alongside a centrepiece garden that would pay tribute to their former home.
But in a recent photo, its clear to see that building has not begun and all that remains are crumbling stands.

Sir Alex Ferguson was left ‘numb’ by forgotten Man Utd star’s ‘really serious’ injury after horror challenge

SIR Alex Ferguson was left “numb” by one horror challenge on a now forgotten Manchester United star. Rodrigo Possebon was being tipped for big things at Old Trafford after his 2008 move from Brazilian club Internacional.
Injury after this tackle saw Possebon struggle to get his Manchester United career going againCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd

The midfielder had impressed in pre-season and was fighting his way into the first team – before one injury put paid to his progress.
Possebon, now 34, was selected to make his full debut in a League Cup game at home against Middlesbrough in September, forming a midfield alongside Anderson and Ryan Giggs.
But one moment left his promising career to unravel as he sprinted for a loose ball in the middle of the park.
A shocking late tackle by Boro captain Emanuel Pogatetz caught the youngster.
    READ MORE ON MAN UNITED
The Austrian flew in with his studs up, and the challenge’s force left Possebon flying into the air.
He was given oxygen by medical staff and taken off the pitch on a stretcher.
Despite initial fears he had a broken leg, he was miraculously playing again a month later.
But his career would never get going again with the midfielder sent on loan a season later before making a scattering of appearances at far less glamorous clubs than Man United.

Speaking after the game, Ferguson said: “It looked a really bad one. For the kid to make his first team debut and get an injury like that it was pretty horrendous.
“For 10 minutes, everyone was numb about it. I have seen a video of it and you don’t want to see that again. We just hope it is not really, really serious, but it looks bad.”
Possebon was the director of football at Brazilian club Ferroviária SAF until March earlier this year when he resigned from the position.
He had however reflected on the moment his career changed.
He told the Manchester Evening News: “Getting injured is never good, mainly because I was in a good sequence of games, but I never thought that the injury could end my career.
“Before the injury, I was in great physical and technical shape, so the period that I was off the activities with the squad hindered me from having opportunities in the team again. Manchester United had one of the best teams on the planet at the time, so having an opportunity in the squad again was not an easy thing.”
He added: “I have no regrets. Playing for Manchester United was a dream come true. More than that, I learned a lot and it gave me incredible experience to carry out my activity today as a Director of Football.
“The whole environment that involves a club like Manchester United, the level of professionals, the pressure, the demands, living in the UK, were fundamental to shaping me as director of football.” More

Tottenham to step up Ange Postecoglou pursuit this weekend with Celtic boss available on the cheap

TOTTENHAM will look to step up their pursuit of Celtic chief Ange Postecoglou following Saturday’s Scottish Cup Final.Spurs are keen on the Greece-born Aussie, who will land a domestic treble this term with victory over Inverness at Hampden Park.

Though the North London club have maintained throughout the search for a permanent successor to Antonio Conte, there is no preferred candidate above any other.
Postecoglou, 57, has hugely impressed during his two-year stay at the Bhoys and has implemented the kind of progressive playing style Daniel Levy has promised fans next term.
The former Socceroos chief is known by incoming Spurs’ chief football officer Scott Munn, a fellow Aussie who will begin his new post on July 1.
Both Munn and Postecoglou have worked for the City Football Group, with the former being chief executive of Melbourne City and the Chinese arm of CFG operation.

Ex-Barcelona and Spain chief Luis Enrique, 53, remains a contender for the Spurs job, which has been vacant since Conte left on March 27.

Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim has also been considered but Portuguese reports insist he has a whopping £17.3million release clause for foreign clubs to sign him.
Sources from Amorim’s home country also claim the 38-year-old is almost certain to spend another year with Sporting.
He is said to be taking a very active role in the club’s pre-season plans, from picking hotels to the opposition for friendlies – hardly the behaviour of someone expecting to be leaving the club in the near future. More

Richarlison gets giant PIGEON inked on his neck as Tottenham fans say flop has ‘more tattoos than goals’

Footage of Richarlison’s new tattoo emerged on social media on Tuesday after a clip of him posing for a selfie with a fan was shared.
In the video, the large pigeon can be seen on the right side of his neck with text running down it’s wing.
The tattoo is believed to reference the 26-year-old’s signature goal celebration, which sees him imitate a pigeon with the “Pombo Dance”.
He previously revealed that the celebration had been inspired by pop group Os Perseguidores.

However, Spurs fans are not so keen on his tattoo, with some mocking the striker on social media.
One tweeted: “More ink than goals this season, useless.”
Another also wrote: “Mans got more tattoos than goals this season ffs.”
A third supporter commented: “Matches his performances in a Spurs shirt this season, terrible.”

Meanwhile, one more added “£60million for s*** tattoos and one Premier League goal.”
Richarlison endured a difficult first season in North London after signing for Spurs from Everton for £50million last summer.
He only scored three goals in 35 appearances and just once in the league, with that goal not coming until the end of April.
Richarlison also holds the unwanted distinction of receiving more bookings for celebrating than goals scored for Spurs.
That unique record comes after he had several goals chalked off following VAR reviews during the campaign.

RANKED: Every Premier League club’s top Dream Team performer for the 2022/23 season

JUST three fixtures remain before the 2022/23 Dream Team season is condemned to the history books. This Saturday, Wembley plays host to a special Manchester derby edition of the FA Cup final while West Ham face Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final next Wednesday.
Then on June 10th, the curtain closes with the Champions League final as Pep Guardiola’s side take on Inter in Istanbul.
Those games promise to be engrossing affairs but for the vast majority of Premier League clubs, school’s out for summer.
In the spirit of wrapping up, we’ve ranked all 20 teams on their best Dream Team player’s points tally, with some added stats and facts along the way.
    20th Bournemouth – Philip Billing

    94 points
    Position rank: 34th
    Overall rank: joint-81st

    Top billingCredit: GETTY
Bournemouth are the only club without a single member in the 100 Club™ and a general look at the Dream Team stats makes one realise what a great job Gary O’Neil did to ensure the club’s top-flight status.
The Cherries’ Norwegian midfielder racked up 44 points in the space of five games early on in the campaign and was a genuinely viable bargain option but he regressed to the mean as the season progressed.
    19th Chelsea – Thiago Silva
    Most read in Football

    101 points
    Position rank: 21st
    Overall rank: joint-75th

A truly damning reflection of the Blues’ dismal season.
The veteran Brazilian centre-back was named as Chelsea’s Player of the Year and rightfully so as he is one of very few Stamford Bridge residents who can hold his head high.
Silva actually ended on the same total of points as Kai Havertz but he averaged more points-per-game than the Germany international so he gets the nod from us – plus, he was consistently among the top ten defenders prior to his injury.
    18th Wolves – Ruben Neves

    102 points
    Position rank: 32nd
    Overall rank: joint-73rd

The Portuguese midfielder earned six Star Man awards in what was an unremarkable term for Wolves.
Julen Lopetegui’s appointment propelled the club out of the relegation scrap but there wasn’t much for the Molineux faithful to write home about if truth be told.
    17th Leeds – Rodrigo

    106 points
    Position rank: 17th
    Overall rank: joint-69th

Rodrigo played his part for LeedsCredit: GETTY
The Whites cycled through Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce but they couldn’t swerve the drop because of their disastrous defence.
However, they packed a decent punch up top thanks mostly to Rodrigo’s finishing – the Spaniard bagged 15 goals in all competitions despite being restricted to 23 league starts because of injury setbacks.
    =15th Nottingham Forest – Morgan Gibbs-White

    108 points
    Position rank: joint-27th
    Overall rank: joint-67th

Forest’s No10 pulled three times his weight to preserve his side’s Premier League status.
Gibbs-White registered five goals, nine goals and seven Star Man awards through some genuinely talismanic performances.
Gareth Southgate could have done a lot worse than calling the 23-year-old up for England’s games against Malta and North Macedonia in June.
    =15th Everton – Dwight McNeil

    108 points
    Position rank: joint-27th
    Overall rank: joint-67th

Similarly, McNeil saved his best form for the final third of the campaign to help the Toffees edge out Leeds and Leicester to stay afloat.
Just 0.1% of Dream Team managers took a punt on the ex-Burnley midfielder but that slim minority were rewarded with 62 points across the last eleven Game Weeks.
    14th Fulham – Aleksandar Mitrovic

    113 points
    Position rank: 15th
    Overall rank: joint-59th

    A defender’s/referee’s worst nightmare
The Serbian target man averaged more points-per-game than Gabriel Martinelli, Alexander Isak and Julian Alvarez but his efforts were undermined by occasional penalty misses, injury niggles, and disciplinary issues.
Mitrovic burst out of the traps with 76 points in his first eleven outings and was a Golden Boot contender before Erling Haaland made it a one-horse race.
It will be interesting to see what Fulham’s No9 can do next season if he’s more available as he averaged a goal every 143.9 minutes this season when on the pitch.
    13th Leicester – James Maddison

    118 points
    Position rank: 20th
    Overall rank: joint-53rd

Not even 19 goal involvements from their playmaker-in-chief could save the Foxes from a bitterly relegation.
Dream Team gaffers should feel confident that they’ll be able to select Maddison again in 2023/24 as several Premier League clubs will be desperate to sign him this summer.
    12th Southampton – James Ward-Prowse

    121 points
    Position rank: 19th
    Overall rank: 51st

Much of what applies to Maddison is also relevant to Southampton’s captain.
Ward-Prowse is a one-club man at 28 years old but he’s simply too good for the Championship and he’s proven in recent years that he’s more than a one-trick pony – although his set-pieces are truly remarkable.
11th Crystal Palace – Eberechi Eze

    129 points
    Position rank: 17th
    Overall rank: 45th

    Eze does it
The Eagles’ No10 benefited massively from Roy Hodgson’s return to Selhurst Park and was among the most in-form assets in Dream Team during the run-in.
Eze plundered 70 points across the last nine Game Weeks of the season, forming a fruitful partnership with Michael Olise, Palace’s only other centurion.
10th West Ham – Jarrod Bowen

    149 points
    Position rank: 10th
    Overall rank: 25th

Said Benrahma could edge out his team-mate with some Europa Conference League final heroics but as it stands, Bowen will finish top of the Hammers’ rankings for the second consecutive season.
The wholehearted winger has thoroughly enjoyed himself on Thursday nights, banking 48 points in the continental arena.
West Ham will have to beat Fiorentina next week if they are to qualify for Europe again next season, which will massively impact their assets’ viability one way or the other.
    9th Brighton – Solly March

    153 points
    Position rank: joint-7th
    Overall rank: joint-21st

Kaoru Mitoma also produced 153 points but we’ve given March the honours because of his superior points-per-game average.
No fewer than four Brighton midfielders achieved 100+ points and the worst of the quartet, Alexis Mac Allister, was the 15th best asset in his position overall!
With the Seagulls having qualified for the Europa League, March and company should be popular selections next season.
8th Aston Villa – Ollie Watkins

    162 points
    Position rank: 7th
    Overall rank: 16th

    The Villains’ heroCredit: GETTY
A fruitful spell of 95 points in the space of eleven games made Aston Villa’s top scorer a big player in the realm of Dream Team between Game Weeks 21 and 30.
The England international regained his best form as Unai Emery moulded the Villains into one of the league’ s most in-form teams after the World Cup and Watkins’ lofty ranking among forwards is extra impressive given he didn’t have European fixtures to bolster his schedule.
    7th Brentford – Ivan Toney

    184 points
    Position rank: 5th
    Overall rank: 12th

Dream Team managers will miss Brentford’s target man while he serves his suspension for gambling breaches.
Toney bagged 20 league goals this season and cemented his status as an ultra reliable mid-range striker.
    6th Arsenal – Bukayo Saka

    195 points
    Position rank: 4th
    Overall rank: 9th

Eight Arsenal players made it to three figures in terms of Dream Team points but none of them made into the exclusive 200 Club™.
The Emirates’ resident star boy came closest via 15 goals, 12 assists and five Star Man awards.
Saka’s returns may have fallen away at the very back end of the campaign but there’s no denying he enjoyed an outstanding season – he edged out the equally brilliant Martin Odegaard on the final day.
    5th Newcastle – Kieran Trippier

    230 points
    Position rank: 1st
    Overall rank: 7th

A league of his ownCredit: GETTY
No other defender achieved more than 167 points and that stat alone justifies Trippier’s status as one of Dream Team’s most elite assets of 2022/23.
The Magpies’ vice-captain hoarded clean sheets, 7+ ratings and Star Man awards for fun during the first two thirds of the season and the fact none of his rivals got anywhere near him at the death despite a dip in returns speaks volumes of his supremacy.
    4th Liverpool – Mohamed Salah

    275 points
    Position rank: 4th
    Overall rank: 4th

A disappointing season for the Reds all things considered but that didn’t hinder everyone’s favourite prolific Egyptian, who posted 29 goals and 15 assists in all competitions.
It’s remarkable to think that more than a few critics deemed Salah to be well under par for long spells.
    A undisputed Dream Team legend.
    3rd Tottenham – Harry Kane

    289 points
    Position rank: 3rd
    Overall rank: 3rd

Like Salah, Spurs’ leading light broke away from his side’s mediocrity to produce yet another spectacular individual campaign.
The England skipper notched 30 league goals for the second time in his career, becoming the Premier League’s second-top goalscorer and Spurs’ outright top scorer in the process.
2nd Manchester United – Marcus Rashford

    301 points
    Position rank: 2nd
    Overall rank: 2nd

    Triple centurionCredit: GETTY
The Red Devils’ No10 was one of the world’s most in-form players for a couple of months following the World Cup.
A rampage of 158 points in ten Game Weeks put pressure on Rashford’s bionic cross-town rival for a while and even though he couldn’t sustain his challenge to the ultimate throne, a triple century of points is a serious achievement.
Bruno Fernandes needs to make a 26-point difference in the FA Cup final if he’s to usurp his team-mate – an unlikely outcome.
1st Manchester City – Erling Haaland

    432 points
    Position rank: 1st
    Overall rank: 1st

We live in the shadow of massive football stadium – fans dump litter in our gardens and smash our windows…we hate it

LOCALS living in the shadow of a Premier League ground claim their lives are a “nightmare” on match days and fear things will only get worse. Residents living next to Villa Park have told of rowdy fans urinating in gardens, smashing windows, vandalising cars and blocking driveways.

Locals have taken to picking up strewn kebab wrappers and beer cans after match days at the club supported by Prince William and Tom Hanks.
Some have started studying fixture lists in attempt to avoid match days, when they know their driveways will be blocked by ignorant fans.
Aston Villa are set for European football next season after a remarkable turnaround in form under new gaffer Unai Emery.
And the famous club have had a near 10,000 seat new stand approved in the past few months, which locals fear is just going to make the problems worse.
Abu Zaman, 26, is a Villa fan but says living near the team he supports is no fun as his car has been damaged on multiple occasions.
Business owner Abu, who has lived on Trinity Road all of his life, said: “The parking and the traffic are really bad.
“We get people who scratch our cars and previously had people smash our windows.
“Our road is shut on the day. On a match day you have to wait for the game to start at which point your whole day is wasted.

“Then there’s the parking, the litter and the vandalism. The roads are open but the supporters are walking on the road and blocking them.
“In the 26 years Villa have only approached us for once for planning permission for the ground extension, they don’t care about the local community.
“As long as their pockets are lined, they don’t care. It’s all about tickets and season tickets for them.
“The roads are covered in alcohol bottles, burger wrappers, pretty much everything.”
Dad-of-one James Payne, 35, who lives on nearby Endicott Road, added: “This is a built up area, the infrastructure can’t support even more fans.
“It’s bad enough as it is – having to wade through a sea of beer bottles and takeaway wrappers just to get to your front door.
“We’ve had people urinating in our front garden, I’m sure people act like they wouldn’t usually do when they go the football. They turn into yobs.
“Someone once ripped our fence post up and began attacking a rival fan with it. It’s just bonkers.

“They get famous fans like Prince William and Tom Hanks seeing all the glamour of Premier League football – but just a stone’s throw away for us it’s a nightmare.”
Andrea Sawyers has lived on Trinity Road since 2012 and said she and her mum have to clean up huge piles of litter left behind by fans themselves.
Mum-of-two Andrea said: “I’m a bit of a Villa fan, I’m not a massive one but a fan.
“The garbage after is the problem, no one cleans up. My mum and I have to do it. All the beer glasses and bottle all over the bins.
“They throw in my garden, all the chip wrappers too.
“There’s also nowhere to park your car, it’s always a busy time.
“They’ve smashed my neighbour’s car windows a couple of times. It’s crazy. I don’t get why they have to go so crazy.
“It’s mainly the rubbish, it’s left to locals, you have to clean it up yourselves.”
Osman Mohammed, 30, is a council worker and has lived on Endicott Road all of his life.
He says he has to plan over a week in advance before he goes out on match days before a fan blocks his drive with their car.
He added: “It gets quite busy. Our issue is we have residential parking nearby, supporters can’t park there, but some try anyway.
“I sometimes look when Villa are playing and plan ahead.
“I don’t leave the house at game time as I can be stuck in traffic for around an hour just to get around the corner.”
Shop owner Md Gias Uddin, 58, admitted there is a litter problem on matchdays but the increased footfall was good for local businesses.
Mr Uddin, who owns a shop on Endicott Road, said: “All of the supporters like my shop mostly, most of them say it’s neat and clean. My experiences is very nice.
“The litter is problem is when the most of the people come to see the football match.
“The litter bin is full and there needs to be more bins. There are a few bins around. People will put their rubbish in the bin if there were more.”
Fellow shop owner Ash Mahmood, 59, has worked in the area for 40 years and says matchday traffic means it can take over an hour to travel a couple of miles.
Ash, who owns Ash Food Fair on Witton Road, said: “The worst part I think at the moment is the parking for the customers. Residents move their cars and park them near me.
“When you finally get out of here, it takes a while to get out. It took me an hour to get out of Aston.
