However, following his 24-minute cameo, the Dutchman failed to establish himself as a regular name in the first team.
He was subsequently loaned out to Charlton, Coventry and, most recently, Burnley, where he enjoyed a successful 2022-23 campaign.
Clarets boss Vincent Kompany is a known admirer of Maatsen, so much so that he is determined to keep him at Turf Moor beyond the expiry of his loan.
According to The Evening Standard, Burnley want to sign the left-back on a permanent deal this summer.

However, they are reluctant to meet Chelsea’s £20million asking price.
Maatsen has just one year remaining on his current Chelsea contract, but he could sign an extension before returning to Burnley next season.
The Blues may also decide to keep the full-back, with Marc Cucurella’s future uncertain due to the imminent arrival of Mauricio Pochettino.
As well as Maatsen and Cucurella, Chelsea also have Ben Chilwell and Lewis Hall to cover the position.

SunSport revealed last night that Postecoglou had indicated to Hoops chiefs on Saturday night that he wanted to take the opportunity to move to the Premier League.
And according to Sky Sports News, the Hoops have given the 57-year old permission to speak to Spurs.
Talks are now expected to take place TODAY – with the Hoops now working on finding their next boss.
Brendan Rodgers has emerged as a contender and is the current bookies’ favourite to land a shock return to the Hoops.

Former Leeds and RB Leipzig boss Jesse Marsch is also in the frame, according to Sky.
Tottenham have been on the lookout for a new permanent manager since sacking Antonio Conte back in March.
It’s been a long search for a new boss but Spurs chief Daniel Levy is now closing-in on his man.
Last week, Postecoglou emerged as the club’s preferred candidate and the move has appeared more and more likely as the week has gone on.

The Greek-Aussie boss refused to be drawn on his future in the wake of Saturday’s Scottish Cup triumph over Inverness CT – but he didn’t commit to staying at Parkhead either.
Postecoglou has been a major success in Scottish football after his surprise appointment in 2021.
After leading the Hoops to a league and cup double in his first season, he went one better this campaign and secured the treble with that triumph on Saturday.
But now the path is clear for him to make his move and head to the Premier League.
SunSport also revealed how Postecoglou is keen to take three key members of Celtic’s backroom team with him.
He wants assistant John Kennedy, coach Gavin Strachan and video analyst Greg Wallace to follow him to North London.

Chilwell’s friend, Harvey Diack, was also in Spain to enjoy the weekend with the stars.
But, after the race, he got caught up in a group of fans.
While Mount was posing for a photo with one person, another came over to ask his friend for a picture, mistaking him for a celebrity.
Diack then went on to take pictures with two other fans before joking with Chilwell.

The Chelsea defender was quick to post the video on his Instagram story with a caption that read: “@HarveyDiack somehow became famous this weekend,” with a laughing emoji.
Chilwell was questioned about the future of Mount, who has been linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, ahead of Sunday’s race.
When speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “It’s none of my business personally but he is my best mate so I would love him to stay.”
Formula One presenter Martin Brundle then caught up with the pair when completing his grid-walk.

Ilkay Gundogan’s Wembley masterclass underlines Manchester City’s midfield dominance in Dream Team

Once again, Manchester City will finish the season as the team with the most Dream Team points among the 20 eligible clubs. When analysing the dominance of Pep Guardiola’s side, the temptation is to focus solely on Erling Haaland’s (£10.1m) record-breaking exploits.
And that’s understandable given the Norwegian poacher’s tally of 52 goals in all competitions and his mountainous total of 432 Dream Team points.
However, while the Premier League Golden Boot winner has undoubtedly spearheaded City’s campaign, the extent of their midfield dominance can hardly be understated.
Too many Man City midfielders to choose from
Sure, Bruno Fernandes (£7.2m) may be the leading asset in his position having amassed 283 points, thanks in no small part to a dozen Star Man awards.
But in terms of sheer quantity, City reign supreme with six representatives inside the top 16 midfielders.
    MANCHESTER CITY’S TOP SIX MIDFIELDERS

    Kevin De Bruyne (£8.6m) – 252 points
    Riyad Mahrez (£6.3m) – 197 points
    Phil Foden (£5.6m) – 186 points
    Jack Grealish (£5.2m) – 145 points
    Ilkay Gundogan (£3.8m) – 144 points
    Rodri (£3.7m) – 134 points

It’s remarkable that City’s sixth-best midfielder has more points than Alexis Mac Allister (£3.8m), Eberechi Eze (£4.4m), James Ward-Prowse (£3.6m) and James Maddison (£5.5m) – a talented quartet of viable options.
Another measure of the double winners’ depth is the fact Gundogan, who has tapped into truly masterful form at the back end of the season, is just the Etihad’s fifth-best midfield asset in 2022/23.

The German technician shocked Wembley with an instantly iconic volley within 15 seconds of kick-off in Saturday’s FA Cup final.
The 32-year-old then cemented his class with a left-footed volley (albeit not as cleanly executed) in the second half which proved to be the cup-winning goal.
Gundogan has once again saved his best form for the season’s climaxCredit: GETTY
Naturally, Gundogan claimed the Star Man award in north-west London to bank 18 points in one fell swoop.
He’s earned 56 points in his last six outings and has been a genuine difference-maker throughout the season’s final Game Weeks.
Pretty much every top Dream Team gaffer has Haaland in their XI so in essence, the striker’s returns haven’t affected mini-league standings in months but Gundogan appears in just 8.2% of teams – his owners have benefited hugely in recent weeks.
More broadly, gaffers who have juggled City’s numerous midfield stars effectively have reaped the rewards but those who stuck by Foden and Mahrez during their relatively inactive spells will have been immensely frustrated.
Dream Team managers will no doubt have to solve this problem again next season as the theme of multiple City midfielders at the top of the rankings has been consistent over the last three or four years now. More

And according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, the two parties have now reached a verbal agreement.
Postecoglou is set to sign a two-year deal with the option to extend for a further season, so he could remain in north London until June 2026.
Celtic are expected to hold discussions with Tottenham this week, but the Scottish Premiership champions have already resigned to losing the Aussie.
And due to his rolling one-year contract at Celtic Park, there will be no hefty compensation to pay.

SunSport revealed the Aussie wants Celtic No2 John Kennedy to join him in London.
Fellow coach Gavin Strachan as well as one of the first-team’s video analysts are also expected to make the move south.
Postecoglou’s appointment will mark the end of Tottenham’s three-month search for a manager.
Former boss Antonio Conte left the club in March following an astonishing rant about his players.

The North Londoners have maintained their interest but have been facing competition from Premier League rivals Chelsea and Liverpool.
According to TERADEPORTES, however, the midfielder has reached a verbal agreement with Mikel Arteta’s side who are looking to strengthen in midfield with Granit Xhaka likely to leave.
The same report claims Arsenal pose as the Ecuador international’s preferred destination.
That is because the Premier League runner-ups will be playing in the Champions League next season.

However, Chelsea are looking to hijack their rivals’ deal, just like they did with Mykhailo Mudryk in January, as they are willing to table a higher bid.
However, the Blues won’t be playing in Europe this coming season after a torrid campaign that saw them finishing 12th.
Liverpool are also keeping tabs but don’t consider Caicedo as a priority.
That is because the Reds are not willing to meet the 21-year-old asking price, which is said to be “well in excess” of the £70m Arsenal submitted in January.
