People are only just realising Man Utd STOLE iconic ‘Red Devils’ nickname

MANCHESTER UNITED is one of the biggest entities in world sport.Initially founded in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR FC, the historic club changed it’s name in 1902 to formally become the recognisable brand we all now know.

The nickname ‘United’ was born and it instantly became synonymous with the northern side.
That was until legendary manager Sir Matt Busby took over.
In the 1950’s, Man Utd started to be referred to as the ‘Busby Babes’ in reference to the club’s beloved boss and young squad.
However, in light of the Munich air disaster of 1958 – which killed 23 people, eight of whom were players – Busby was keen to rebuild the club with a new identity.

The United icon was inspired by local rugby club Salford – popularly known as the ‘Red Devils’ – after the team played a match at Old Trafford nine months after the tragic plane crash.
He then decided to adopt the name for Man Utd as he liked the intimidating nature of it.
Within a few months, the nickname ‘Busby Babes’ was scrapped and replaced by the ‘Red Devils’.
And in 1973, the club badge was changed to feature the now-iconic image of a Red Devil holding a trident.

The full-back made 19 appearances during his spell in Italy, and he has since admitted that the experience gave him a better insight into the different ways in which some Italian clubs and managers operate.
Although he never worked under the management of Antonio Conte, Richards referenced the 53-year-old’s strict Tottenham regime – which included a ban on ketchup – when recalling his experience in Florence.
In his column for The Daily Mail in January 2022, he wrote: “He will be tight on discipline and the best evidence of that is the fact he banned ketchup and mayonnaise.
“It was one of those stories that made me smile but having experienced the Italian way of life, I know why he has done it.

“When I moved to Fiorentina in 2014, early on during a couple of team meals, I put ketchup on my plate.
“I got a few looks from some of the other lads around the table as if to say, ‘are you ok?’
“They eat fresh food; everything is salad and olive oil. Conte, clearly, demands physical perfection from his players and the smallest details give you an edge.
“I lost seven kilos during that season in Florence, as the Italian diet is centred on players being lean and light to move quicker.”

Centre-back Harry Maguire, plus midfielders Fred and Scott McTominay and frontman Anthony Martial, might be off this summer.
But the first symbol of a split from Solskjaer’s regime could see Dean Henderson turn his loan at Nottingham Forest into a permanent deal.
Solskjaer had talked up the once-capped Englishman eventually succeeding David de Gea as United’s No1.
But the Norwegian was sacked in November 2021 and, although his replacement Ralf Rangnick likewise hoped Henderson could step up, no sooner had Ten Hag arrived than the keeper was shipped to Forest.

Fringe left-backs Alex Telles and Brandon Williams are also tipped for departures this summer.
Central defender Eric Bailly can take the total number of departures to eight.
Along with Maguire exiting, possibly to Spurs or West Ham, that would clear the decks for Napoli’s Kim Min-jae to come into the backline.
But Ten Hag is thought to be equally keen on two new midfielders, as well as maintaining his hunt for a world-class frontman.
