He admitted: “I like to get out of my comfort zone and the easiest thing was to go back to England, but I couldn’t turn down Real Madrid.

West Ham chasing former Arsenal wonderkid with David Moyes sending scouts to monitor centre-half

WEST HAM are keeping tabs on Sunderland’s Northern Ireland defender Daniel Ballard. The centre back was watched by Hammers’ Head of Recruitment Rob Newman at the most recent international in March – a 1-0 home defeat by Finland.

Former Arsenal trainee Ballard, 23, is currently out of action with a hamstring injury.
But West Ham boss David Moyes is watching developments as he plans for next season.
Sunderland reached the Championship Play-Off semi finals last season before losing to eventual winners Luton.
Ballard has admitted he was a late developer.

But he’s reaped the rewards from three loan spells before switching to the Black Cats in June 2022.
However, his first temporary spell was a nightmarre.
He lasted just three games with Swindon in 2019 as a serious knee injury left him needing five months to recover.
But Ballard then helped Blackpool win promotion from League One and shone in Millwall’s surprise challenge for a Championship play-off spot in 2021-22.

Now he’s just done the same with Sunderland.
And he told Sunsport last year how he’s grafted to completely overturn what he saw as flaws in his game.
Ballard said: “Naturally I like hard work. That comes easier to me than some people and that’s perhaps because football has never been easy for me, it’s always been tough.
“So I’ve had to work hard otherwise I’d not be in the position I am today.
“I was a late developer. Even at 18, I still wasn’t a centre-back because I wasn’t tall enough. I was one of the slowest, couldn’t move my legs and I wasn’t a technically gifted player.
“Yet I’ve always been naturally good at defending but compared to the other lads with the ball I was always below the curve whereas now my body is stronger, I feel comfortable on the ball and all that work at Arsenal has worked out better in the long run.”

I nearly quit football because my knees were gone and was given six weeks to win a pro contract – now I play for England

JARRAD BRANTHWAITE almost gave up his football dream at 16.Growing pains left the Carlisle-born star believing he would never make it as a pro.
Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite has shone on loan for PSV EindhovenCredit: Getty
Now the defender, 20, who has  had a stellar season on loan from Everton at Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, will represent England at the Under-21 Euros which kicks off on Wednesday.
Branthwaite’s progress as a youngster was severely hampered by a  condition called Osgood-Schlatter that causes pain and swelling below the knee joint.
It meant he could not run, let alone train, for over a year when he was 15.
He was ready to abandon the game as a future career, when home town club Carlisle gave him six weeks to win a professional contract.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
But his dad Paul, who hopes to watch his son out in Georgia over the next fortnight, convinced the teenager to give it all he had in that short time.
The outcome was successful, as he won a deal with Carlisle, which led to a Goodison Park move.
Branthwaite, who won his first Under-21s cap in a behind-closed-doors friendly defeat by Japan on Saturday, reflected: “There were two years where I literally did nothing. I couldn’t train or anything.
“My knees were gone because I had grown so quick. I couldn’t run, it was so painful.

“Carlisle said they didn’t think I had it in me to get a professional contract, so they gave me six weeks to prove to them I was good enough.
“I went through a stage where I was like, ‘Do I really want to do it?’ I would probably say I was thinking of giving up.
“But dad said, ‘Come on, you have to do it’. He gave me a training programme to do at home in the gym to work on my fitness and strength to give myself the best chance to get that contract.
“After the six weeks, I got  a contract. So I think he’s influenced me to get to where I am today. It’ll be a proud moment for him if I play for England here at a major tournament.”
Branthwaite would probably have become a PE teacher had football not worked out — thankfully it did.
He only played a handful of games for the Cumbrians before Everton snapped him up in January 2020.
A loan to the Championship with Blackburn followed before his breakthrough this season with  Eindhoven.
It has sparked talk of interest from Jose Mourinho’s Roma and other European clubs.
    STONES ‘UNBELIEVABLE’
On his future, Branthwaite added: “Having the experience I’ve had in Holland, it’s opened my eyes to other clubs. But I’m focused on the Euros this summer and then after that we can go from there.
“When I left Carlisle for Everton, it was my goal to play in the Premier League. That would be my main ambition.
“Just to solidify myself in a team in the Premier League at Everton and play as many games as I can.”
In joining the Toffees from the lower leagues, Branthwaite is following in the footsteps of his idol John Stones, who went from Barnsley to Everton to winning the Treble with Manchester City.
Branthwaite looks up to Stones as the example of how comfortable modern-day centre-backs should be with the ball at their feet.
He added: “I watched him in the Champions League final, even though he plays midfield sometimes, his ability on the ball is unbelievable.

Grealish spearheaded City’s extended celebrations after Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup glory.
And although the England winger was happy to be snapped drinking freely, one team-mate might regret his out-of-character alcohol guzzling.
Ederson told TNT Sports BR: “There are Man City players who don’t drink, but made an exception, which was the case with Ruben Dias.
“But it didn’t work out for him.

“Two shots and he threw up everything and in Jack Grealish’s mother’s bag…”
That, however, might be a subtle dig at Grealish’s own designer accessory.
His Gucci bag has been in the wars this season – suffering from good-natured stick plus an infamous incident in the Wembley dressing room.
City players gleefully shared a clip of Grealish shouting at a kit man who slid right into it amid fun scenes.

Yet that rejoicing after the 2-1 FA Cup final victory over Manchester United was eclipsed by the partying when Pep Guardiola’s men sealed the Treble with last Saturday’s 1-0 Champions League final win against Inter Milan.
The Treble was in the bag with that – and according to Ederson something else was soon unfortunately in the bag…
“The Gucci one? Oh no” posted one fan, and “Poor Mrs Grealish, hopefully he got her a new bag” wrote another. More
