Forgotten Champions League winner with Chelsea is now successful businessman and even attended Harvard

FORMER Chelsea defender Ryan Bertrand has founded and sold a business before even retiring from football. The left-back, 33, started the Blues’ Champions League final triumph 11 years ago as they beat Bayern Munich on penalties to clinch their first ever European triumph.

More than a decade on, Bertrand has played for the likes of Aston Villa and Southampton, but now plies his trade at Leicester.
And while he is gearing up for a return to the Championship following the Foxes’ relegation from the Premier League, it is off the pitch where he has garnered much of his success in recent years.
Bertrand started trading as a young 18-year-old at Chelsea – an interest which eventually led him to start his own brokerage in 2015.
He set up the business – a fintech start-up called “Silicon Markets” – with the idea of “bringing institutional tools to the at-home trader”.

And after developing the company, the ex-Blues star sold it to a Malaysian firm.
But that is not the only venture he has dipped his toe into over the past decade.
Bertrand also developed an emoji business alongside ex-team-mate John Terry.
Speaking to Sky Sports in 2021, he said: “Sports is my passion, that’ll never leave, but finance is another one.

“As you’re building the blocks towards post-career, you’ve got to re-learn, re-train, help yourself become an expert in something different.
“It’s those horror stories that have kept me ahead of the game, I’m always thinking forward.”
Bertrand’s impressive business-savvy attitude led him to complete the Harvard alternative investments course.
The course, put on by one of the world’s most renowned universities, is something the defender hopes will further his business knowledge.
He also has plans to take on the FA’s technical director course at some stage – and has one eye on a role on the board of a football club in the future.
Bertrand, who is set to work under his 21st manager in Enzo Maresca, told The Guardian in 2018: “At first, English managers could possibly fear it [a director of football]. No one is telling me which players to buy, they’d say.
“But if you look at it, the demands on one human in the modern-day game … you can’t become six of you.
“There are specialisms – player recruitment, making sure the club’s methodology is being kept from the youth team up.
“That’s ultimately what the director of football’s role should be.” More

Mason Mount signs MASSIVE Man Utd contract as England star ends Chelsea love affair with £60m transfer

MASON MOUNT’S love affair with Chelsea is over after a £60million divorce deal was sealed with Manchester United. The England midfielder’s transfer saga has ended with the Prem rivals settling on a switch worth £55m, plus £5m in add-ons.

Mount, 24, will sign a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further 12 months, worth in the region of £250,000 a week.
It brings to a conclusion the former academy player’s 16-year association with the club he joined as an eight-year-old.
Personal terms are a formality and Mount was last night arranging a medical to rubber-stamp the deal, which is the first of the summer for United boss Erik ten Hag.
Talks between Chelsea and the Red Devils have dragged on for weeks.

United had THREE bids rejected for a player who has only a year left on his Blues contract.
Chelsea were holding out for “north of £60m” while United would only offer £55m — and threatened to walk away.
But a meeting yesterday led to a breakthrough with both sides compromising.
Chelsea poster boy Mount is the latest star to leave Stamford Bridge as part of a mass sell-off.

Defender Kalidou Koulibaly, keeper Edouard Mendy, midfielder Mateo Kovacic, forward Kai Havertz plus on-loan pair Joao Felix and Denis Zakaria have all departed since the season ended.
Midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek is in the process of finalising a move to AC MIlan while N’Golo Kante has joined Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ittihad as a free agent.
However, Hakim Ziyech’s switch to Al-Nassr is thought to have hit a snag.
Chelsea will also listen to offers for club captain Cesar Azpilicueta and winger Callum Hudson-Odoi.
The sale of Mount will be hard to take for Blues fans, who regard him as the jewel in the crown of their renowned crop of homegrown talent.
Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly failed to agree a new deal with Mount last year and talks collapsed when he rejected a one-year extension in February.
Meanwhile, Ten Hag has blocked United’s back-up keeper Tom Heaton, 37, from joining Luton as doubts continue over David de Gea’s future. More

Man City accused of accepting illicit £30million payment from ‘mystery’ figure in Middle East

MANCHESTER CITY have been accused of accepting a illicit £30m payment from a “mystery” figure from the United Arab Emirates.According to a new documentary, Uefa chiefs ruled that two separate £15m payments in 2012 and 2013 were used to cover for sponsorship funds that did not actually exist.

While City successfully overturned their two-year European ban in 2020, the allegations are understood to be among the claims that have left the Champions League winners facing 115 separate Premier League financial charges.
And Prem legal experts may be likely to use the Uefa evidence to try to prove their case.
The YouTube documentary, “Britain’s Biggest Football Scandal?” cites a 2020 report from Uefa’s Club Financial Control Board – which was never published.
European financial experts are said to have agreed that the payments were supposed to be from the UAE telecommunications company Etisalat.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
Instead, though, the payments allegedly “disguised equity funding” from the accounts of City’s owners, the Abu Dhabi United Group, in breach of FFP regulations.
City are also accused of effectively paying former boss Roberto Mancini via two separate accounts — the official £1.45m salary through the club’s books and the remaining £1.75m from owner Sheikh Mansour’s Abu Dhabi football club, Al Jazira.
Under questioning from Uefa, a City lawyer was said to have named “Jaber Mohamed” as the person who had made the payments, describing him as “a person in the business of providing financial and brokering services to commercial entities in the UAE”.
According to Uefa, City confirmed the named payer as Jaber Mohamed, although the club declined to produce him as a witness.
    Most read in Football
The YouTube report claims Uefa asked: “The obvious question, not answered at any point in the club’s submission and evidence, is why either Etisalat or ADUG should have needed any financial assistance from a broker in paying the Etisalat sponsorship liabilities.”
City insisted that Etisalat repaid the money in 2015 and the club’s successful appeal to the Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport saw two of the three judges on the panel rule the claims “remain unsubstantiated”.
CAS also ruled many of the Uefa charges could not be justified because they were “time limited” and filed too late.
But Prem rules have no time restrictions, leaving open the prospect of further scrutiny.
City face 115 Prem charges relating to financial reporting between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, plus charges of non-cooperation with the League investigation over five years up to and including last term.
The Treble winners, who have vehemently and vociferously maintained their innocence of all claims and charges, declined to comment on the latest allegations.
But there are likely to be private questions from the club over the documentary makers, Sunrise Media, registered in the British Virgin Islands as recently as June 9, amid suspicions that the source of the allegations may be linked to UAE’s Gulf rivals, the state of Qatar. More

Man Utd boss Ten Hag BLOCKS goalkeeper’s move to Prem rival in biggest hint yet that De Gea will leave on free transfer

De Gea’s contract is set to expire on Friday and he is yet to agree a new contract with the Red Devils.
The Spanish keeper had reportedly signed a contract extension before the club backed out due to Ten Hag’s concerns over De Gea.
He now looks set to leave the club after 12 years, having posted a cryptic tweet on Wednesday as his contract runs down.
Ten Hag has even dropped a hint De Gea is leaving after reportedly stopping Heaton from joining Luton Town this summer.

The Telegraph report the United boss is reluctant to allow the veteran keeper to leave despite his desire to depart.
A move to Luton would have seen the 37-year-old become the newly promoted side’s first-choice between the sticks.
However, Ten Hag is unwilling to lose the former England international as his goalkeeping conundrum continues.
Heaton returned to United in 2021 but has since made just three competitive appearances, largely acting as a back-up to De Gea.

Fellow understudy Dean Henderson is also expected to leave United this summer, despite recent reports claiming he could stay at the club.
As for a new goalkeeper, United have been strongly linked with a move for Inter Milan’s Andre Onana.
The Italian giants’ transfer chief flew into Manchester earlier this week in a bid to finalise the deal, but the transfer is still to be agreed.

MANCHESTER UNITED have agreed a deal with Chelsea to sign Mason Mount. The Red Devils are desperate to land the Blues midfielder, whose Stamford Bridge contract expires next year.

They had three bids rejected for Mount by Chelsea, including the third of £55million last Friday.
That prompted the Old Trafford club to consider pulling out of negotiations altogether, as Bayern Munich circled.
But now SunSport understands the two Premier League rivals have struck a deal.
United will pay £55m up front with an extra £5m in potential add-ons.

Major Mason Greenwood update as Manchester United’s ‘plan’ for striker is revealed – while he makes an extra £350,000

A ‘PLAN’ for Mason Greenwood’s future has reportedly been decided by Manchester United. The striker, 21, was suspended in January 2022 after a woman made allegations of physical and sexual abuse.

Greenwood was due to stand trial this year, but all the charges against him were dropped in February.
Now the Red Devils are considering loaning Greenwood out as manager Erik ten Hag is against selling the forward, the Manchester Evening News reported.
The Sun can also reveal that Greenwood has just posted bumper profits from his image rights company despite not playing for more than a year.
Greenwood has continued to pick up his £75,000-a-week wages from the club.

And although he was not included in photos for the new home kit launch, he has added hundreds of thousands of pounds to his image rights firm.
Paperwork for TSM Sports Ltd show the England international has £1.05 million in his account – up from £740,000 the previous year.
Top players earn extra cash from clubs for the sale of merchandise like shirts that bear their “name, nickname, slogan and signatures, image, likeness, voice, logos, get-ups, initials, team or squad number”.
The company was founded in 2019 and both Greenwood and dad Andrew are named as directors.

However the footballer owns more than 75% of the company shares.
Charges of alleged attempted rape and assault against a woman were dropped against Greenwood by the CPS back in February.
In a statement released at the time, the young forward wrote: “I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.
“There will be no further comment at this time.”
Last week, he was pictured training on a pitch for the first time since his arrest.
Now speculation is mounting that Greenwood – under contract until 2025 – could be on his way out of the club.
He joined the team aged just six and rose through the ranks to land himself a regular spot in the first team.
In 2019 he became the youngest footballer to play for United in the Champions League when he took to the pitch aged just 17. More
