Rio Ferdinand admits he binged on ten pints of Guinness and vodka regularly during his career with parts a ‘blur’

RIO FERDINAND enjoyed boozing so much as a youngster he would go on benders and drink ten pints of Guinness before hitting the shots. The Manchester United legend, now 44, has revealed he was part of a major drinking culture early in his career which saw him juggle football with nights out partying.

Former Red Devils and England captain Ferdinand played 81 times for his country and was regarded as one of the best defenders in world football.
But he confesses there was a time he behaved “like a lunatic” as he downed pints and vodka for fun.
In an interview with the Guardian in 2019, Ferdinand – who came through the ranks at West Ham – said: “I used to go through a load when I was younger.
“I could probably do eight, nine, ten [pints]. Then I’d move on to the vodkas.
“I could go through loads. I could go all day drinking, then wake up and go again when I was younger.
“I always say to people who ask if I have any regrets about playing, I wouldn’t have drunk alcohol.
“When I was younger I did. I was a lunatic. When I was at West Ham, elements of my career are a blur.
“People talk about performances and results at certain times in them games and I just sit and nod my head.

    “I haven’t got a clue what they’re talking about. I don’t remember.
“Saturday or Sunday. It was a different culture. Crazy. The culture I was in at West Ham was a drinking culture.
“Football and drinks and nightclubs, that’s the way it was. And that’s the way I lived at that time.”
By the time Ferdinand made his record-breaking move from Leeds to Man Utd in 2002 for £30million, he had started to pull back from the abyss and largely cut out alcohol during the season.
But he would still cut loose in the off-season with lengthy benders.
Ferdinand, who won six Premier League titles with United, added: “In the summers I’d drink for two weeks. Bang. Just keep drinking.
“Yes. I was lucky. I had a natural ability that could get me through that period of my life.
“But I got to a point where I had to make a decision to be more professional.”

And the former Manchester City defender had interest from Burnley, via manager Vincent Kompany, according to L’Équipe.
The French newspaper also claimed that Olympiacos and many clubs from France and outside of Europe were keen on signing Mendy.
He was said to have not been motivated by money in his move to Lorient and instead chose the side because he wanted to “have fun on the pitch”.
Mendy allegedly sought a “calmer environment” in order to be able to “regain his confidence” after not playing for several years.

It comes after it was alleged that Lorient moved to sign the former Monaco and Marseille defender a month ago while he was still on trial.
Le Parisien reported the French club contacted his agent Meïssa N’diaye.
He left City after his contract expired last month but has not played since August 2021.
Mendy was found not guilty at a retrial of attempting to rape a woman at his home in 2018.

He was also acquitted of raping a second woman two years later.
Mendy claimed the incidents were consensual.
Earlier this year, Mendy was cleared of six counts of rape and one of sexual assault after a six-month trial.
But the jury failed to reach a verdict on the two other charges.
“Lorient are happy to announce today the signing on a two-year deal of the French international left-back Benjamin Mendy,” the club said in a statement.
“Benjamin Mendy, 2018 world champion, quadruple winner of the Premier League under the colours of Manchester City and French champion of Ligue 1 with Monaco, comes to reinforce the Lorient squad for this new season. Welcome Benjamin,” Lorient added.
Lorient finished 10th in the league last season.
The club, who face Bournemouth in a friendly on August 5, begin their 2023-34 Ligue 1 campaign against champions PSG on August 13. More

Players who swapped football for fighting, including Rio Ferdinand, Marcin Wasilewski, Wayne Bridge and more

FOOTBALLERS are always encouraged to think about what career path they will take when they hang up their boots. Some choose to go into coaching, others invest in property… and some decide to knock lumps out of one another.

Former Leicester defender Marcin Wasilewski has become the latest ex-pro to swap shin pads for mouth guards.
The Pole, 43, retired from football in November 2020 and was tipped to enter the world of cage fighting.
A bout with ex-Bolton and Hearts defender Blazej Augustyn was even being lined up, however he is yet to fight.
Here, SunSport details the fighting careers of five other footballers who have turned to the ring.

    Rio Ferdinand
England legend Ferdinand’s football career brought several glittering moments but his boxing days were over before they really started.
Sponsored by a betting company to step into the ring in September 2017, the former defender was jarringly denied a licence.
The British Boxing Board of Control deemed it ‘not beneficial’ to allow Ferdinand his second career.

And the Manchester United hero quickly called time on his boxing comeback.
He said: “It is with a heavy heart that I am hanging up my gloves.
“To not be given the chance to demonstrate my ability to the BBBofC through the standard assessment afforded to others is hard to take.”
Fast forward to October 2020 and Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn revealed his desire to stage an Old Trafford showdown between Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.

    Katie Taylor
Arguably the world’s top female boxer, Taylor is also a former Republic of Ireland international footballer.
The ex-winger starred for Peamount United in the late 2000s yet missed her side’s FAI Women’s Cup final in 2009 to be crowned Europe’s best amateur fighter.
Taylor won 11 caps for her country, scoring twice, before choosing to focus on boxing a decade ago.
Former team-mate Marie Curtin would later tell the Mirror that Taylor ‘would have excelled to the highest level’ had she stayed in football.
Curtin added: “There were no barriers. Her mindset is so strong and you need leaders like that on your team to win.”
And Taylor fondly remembers her playing days, even recalling a crunching tackle that was posted on Twitter a couple of years ago.

    Wayne Bridge
Hardly the most aggressive left-back of his day, ex-Chelsea man Bridge showed the fire in his belly with a stint in boxing two years ago.
A Sport Relief clash with Made In Chelsea star Spencer Matthews saw the defender take on a man nine years his junior.
The three-round affair started tightly before Bridge unleashed a barrage of blows.
Matthews hit the deck twice and yet made it to the final bell, at which Bridge won on points.
The former England international, who has also appeared on I’m A Celeb, retired from football aged 33 in 2014.
His boxing career ended with that one charity fight and he is now said to refer to himself as a ‘stay-at-home dad’ for the two kids he shares with wife Frankie.

    Leon McKenzie
A star forward for the likes of Norwich, Peterborough and Coventry on the pitch, McKenzie would later forge a decent super-middleweight career.
Having hung up his boots in January 2013, he pulled on the gloves just six months later.
A debut win over John Mason at Bethnal Green’s historic York Hall set him on a string of nine fights without defeat.
An English title fight with Jahmaine Smyle saw McKenzie suffer a first defeat before he rounded off an 11-fight career with a nine-round loss to Cello Renda.
The ex-striker also joined forces with former England cricketer Steve Harmison for a talkSPORT podcast on sports stars’ post-retirement plans.
He said: “For a while I was trying to hold on to ‘former professional boxer and footballer’. That was my identity. I’ve accepted my position now.”

    Curtis Woodhouse
Few footballers have made the switch to boxing as convincingly as Woodhouse.
Birmingham paid £1million to sign the midfielder from Sheffield United in 2001 before spells with Peterborough, Hull and more.
Disenchanted with the game, he quit aged 26 to spark a long career in the ring.
An assault conviction halted Woodhouse’s rise but he soon began teaming both of his sports.

Mount left West London this summer to sign for Manchester United in a £60million deal.
While Declan Rice has stolen the headlines – securing a record-breaking £105million move to London rivals Arsenal.
For years youth prospects were forced to spend time on loan and eventually leave the club permanently in search of first-team football.
SunSport picks out five of the Chelsea academy prospects that got away…

    Declan Rice
The ex-West Ham midfielder was a top transfer target for the Blues, until the Gunners swooped to sign him.
Now a regular in Gareth Southgate’s England squad, it appeared the Blues missed a trick when they released him at the age of 14.
Rice revealed how he ‘broke down’ following the news but moved to the Hammers where he has cemented his reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in the country.
A move back to his boyhood club appeared almost inevitable, before Roman Abramovich’s sanction woes, but now they will have to see him wear the red and white of Arsenal.

    Rhian Brewster
The 22-year-old striker joined Chelsea aged seven having turned down the likes of Arsenal.
At the age of 14, he quit to join Liverpool where he felt his development was better suited elsewhere.
He made just three competitive appearances for the Reds but a loan stint at Swansea highlighted his potential.
The England U17s World Cup winner bagged 10 in 20 for the Swans and earned a £23.5million move to Sheffield United in 2020.
He suffered relegation with the Blades, and found goals hard to come by in the Championship with just one goal in 17 games last season.
Will be hoping to regain his earlier form in the Premier League again this season.
Rhian Brewster made a £23.5m move to Sheff Utd
    Nathan Ake
The Dutch defender was rewarded with a £40million switch to Man City in 2020 and a Treble winning-season last year after spending three impressive seasons at Bournemouth.
He joined Chelsea’s academy in 2011 from Feyenoord and had three loan spells with Reading, Watford and the Cherries.
Ake made seven league appearances for Chelsea before sealing his permanent move to Bournemouth for £20m in 2017.

    Eddie Nketiah
Nketiah teamed up with the Chelsea academy as a nine-year-old but was released by the club in 2015.
Arsenal quickly snapped the now 24-year-old up, who committed his future to the club by signing a new contract last summer.
In his past two seasons, Nketiah has scored 19 goals for the Gunners in all competitions.
    Bertrand Traore
Traore was first linked with a move to Chelsea in 2010 from Auxerre but it was 2013 when he was finally announced.
He was loaned to Vitesse and Ajax before making ten league appearances for Chelsea, scoring twice.

Yves Bissouma loving playing under ‘dad’ Ange Postecoglou – and looking to put nightmare first Spurs term behind him

YVES BISSOUMA is loving playing under father-figure Ange Postecoglou already as he looks to put his nightmare maiden Spurs season behind him.The Malian was signed last summer by Antonio Conte from Brighton for £25million.
Yves Bissouma vies with West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen at Perth’s Optus Stadium
But he was no favourite son of the Italian, who regularly overlooked the midfielder when he was available.
Bissouma’s progress was also hindered by contracting Covid during Spurs’ pre-season tour to South Korea last summer and then sustaining a stress fracture to his ankle in February which kept him out for almost three months.
In the end he made just ten Premier League starts but looks set to be a major figure under new boss Postecoglou.
Speaking of the Australian, Bissouma said: “He gives us confidence.

“He’s like a Dad, uncle, friend for us so we’re happy to be with him and we’re trying to do what he wants.
“He comes to his players and talks to us all. That’s really important in the changing room.
“When the gaffer comes and speaks to his players that means everything. You know how we have to do it.
“Last year is last year. I don’t have to talk about last year, it’s the past. You have to look forward and focus on the future. I’m trying to work really hard to be ready for the season.”

Postecoglou, 57, has made it clear to Bissouma during pre-season that he sees the 26-year-old as a key part of his team.
He has also been encouraging the ex-Lille ace to set a good example to the younger players in the squad.
Bissouma started as the deeper of a midfield three that included James Maddison and Oliver Skipp in Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat to West Ham at Perth’s Optus Stadium.
The smart money would be on that trio starting in the curtain-raiser at Brentford on August 13, particularly with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg likely to have been sold by then.
Bissouma almost scored a beautiful team goal that involved a clever Harry Kane dummy against the Hammers in what was an exciting sign of the type of football to come under Postecoglou.
And while he enjoys his new, responsible role at the base of midfield, the African claims he would play anywhere for his new boss.
Bissouma added: “The coach can ask me to play right-back, left-back, centre-back. In my head I’m ready to play every position for my team.
“But I’m happy to play the way I played against West Ham. I really like it.”
On new £40m new-boy Maddison, Bissouma added: “Everyone knows he’s an amazing player.
“We know he’s going to help us a lot with his experience. We’re confident with him.
Manor Solomon claimed he could not turn down Tottenham this summerCredit: Rex
“We’re trying to push him like we push each other. He’s a really good guy.”
Another of Spurs’ new signings, Manor Solomon, caught the eye against West Ham, as Spurs hit 30 shots but somehow ended up on the losing side.
The Israeli joined on a free from Shakhtar Donetsk, turning down the possibility to sign permanently for Fulham where he spent last season on loan.
Solomon, 23, explained: “I had an amazing time at Fulham. I had a really good bond with the fans and Fulham, from the first moment, they were really kind to me.
“They really loved me and welcomed me from the first moment.

But Savage was not in Erik ten Hag’s squad for today’s 1-0 friendly win against Lyon in Edinburgh.

The 24-year-old only spent 26 minutes on the pitch but left immense promise for the future and manager Mikel Arteta could indeed build the team around him.

    Arsenal vs MLS All-Stars analysis
Here’s what SunSport’s man on the field Martin Lipton made of Arsenal’s dominant win over the MLS All-Stars:
Declan Rice made his Arsenal bow as Mikel Arteta’s men cruised past Wayne Rooney’s woeful MLS All-Stars.
The £105million midfielder was part of a slew of second-half replacements as Arteta gave his entire squad a run-out.
And while there is far more to come from the England ace, he looked immediately at home among the Gunners stars as he anchored the middle of the park.
Rice’s unexpected 26-minute appearance was a further positive for Arsenal, who won without breaking out of second gear.
First-half stunners from Gabriel Jesus and Leandro Trossard made it oh so easy, with Jorginho’s penalty at the start of the second half ensuring the victory before Rice trotted on to wild acclaim from his new supporters and fellow subs Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz added more home pain.
Arteta hopes his new “lighthouse” will be the missing link, with Rooney calling on him to become the “leader” of the Gunners pack.Martin LiptonSunSport
