Brutal Ten Hag makes stark admission about Man Utd’s chances of winning the Premier League title this season

ERIK TEN HAG says only Manchester City can talk about title ambitions while the rest aim for the top four. The Manchester United boss guided his side to third last season 14 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men who claimed their fifth title in six years.
Erik Ten Hag says securing top four is the priority before United can start dreaming of winning the leagueCredit: Getty
And asked if the Red Devils could now realistically talk of a title challenge he was as forthright as ever.
Ten Hag said: “I think in pre-season we shouldn’t talk about that – I think no one in the Premier League can do that, maybe City, they can do that because for the last six years they won the title five times.
“So they can talk about that, but any other club must first compete for the first four positions, and make sure you are getting in the first four and then after the first two and then maybe you can see about getting yourself into such a position, but don’t talk about that achievement.”
Ten Hag undoubtedly improved United last season guiding them back into the Champions League as well as winning the clubs first trophy since 2017 with the Carabao Cup.

While they lost to City in the FA Cup Final and by 6-3 at The Etihad they also claimed a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag said: “I think we have proven we can beat them but you have to do it every day and in this moment we have a way to go.
“City is also winning their games much more easily than we did so I see the facts.
“But I don’t want to talk about them because it sounds negative and it’s not the way I meant it. I want to talk about our project.

“I want to talk about how we improve and I think the improvements last year and the result were quite obvious, but also in the performance it was quite obvious that we could beat the big opponents, and also City.
“In the three games you saw absolutely that we increased the levels against them.
“We have a competition with seven, eight clubs in the Premier League, across Europe even more teams, so we have to work on our way of play and improve our performance. It has to be optimum.” More

Dream Team 2023/24: Liverpool’s best players, bargain options & potential flops

FEW teams are as intriguing as Liverpool in a Dream Team context this summer.2022/23 was an underwhelming season for the Reds all things considered but they finished the campaign in the swaggering form supporters have come to expect of Jurgen Klopp’s reign.
A midfield revamp coupled with goals galore from the forward arsenal in pre-season suggests the six-time European champions have plenty of points in them once the action gets underway.

    A points machine!Credit: DREAM TEAM
With that in mind, let’s analyse the squad in terms of best players, bargain options and potential flops.
    BEST PLAYERS
First and foremost, let’s spell out Mohamed Salah’s (£7m) in bold and underline it several times.
No player has scored more points in the realm of Dream Team since the Egyptian hero’s return to English shores in 2017.
The 31-year-old averages 31 goals a season for Liverpool in all competitions and is a bonafide Dream Team legend.
Erling Haaland’s (£8.5m) presence has changed the landscape at the top end of the scale but every gaffer should, at the very least, explore the possibility of an XI that contains both Salah and Manchester City’s prolific No9.
Trent Alexander-Arnold (£6m) is a particularly compelling prospect as there’s every indication he will continue to rack up minutes in midfield.
How much time will Alexander-Arnold actually spend at right-back this season?Credit: Getty
Anfield’s homegrown hero is categorised as defender in Dream Team once again this season and will therefore benefit from any clean sheets to which he contributes at least 60 minutes of playing time.
But if he is to keep fulfilling a more advanced role then he looks set to capitalise on the new scoring system, which will reward the game’s best playmakers with a point for every big chance created as well as shots on target.
No section on Liverpool’s top assets would be complete without Alisson (£4.5m).
Brazil’s No1 was superb last season having been given plenty of work to do behind a vulnerable defence.
If Klopp’s side have indeed exited their form trough then Alisson should have more clean sheets to add to his impressive save stats.
    BARGAIN OPTIONS
Konate has talked about “stepping up” this coming seasonCredit: Getty
Very few Liverpool players fit the description of an out-and-out bargain but that doesn’t mean there’s not value for money to be had among the squad.
If Ibrahima Konate (£3.5m) is to be Virgil van Dijk’s (£5m) first-choice partner at centre-back then the Frenchman could be a very savvy differential option – his current ownership sits at a modest 3%.
It’s hard to predict Liverpool’s first-choice front three with plenty of rotation expected in the remaining two attacking positions with Salah an assumed guarantee.
However, reports from pre-season have described a new-found composure within Darwin Nunez (£4m) in front of goal, with Klopp singling out the Uruguayan for praise.
His price tag may exclude him from the bargain aisle but given he’ll head into Gameweek 1 cheaper than the likes of Callum Wilson (£4.5m), Ollie Watkins (£4.5m) and Son Heung-min (£5m), it may not be long before the ex-Benfica man is considered a smart investment.
A word for Dominik Szoboszlai (£3.5m) too, who will look reasonably priced if he establishes himself as Anfield’s playmaker-in-chief behind a threatening, dynamic forward line.
    POTENTIAL FLOPS
Will the real Van Dijk please stand up?Credit: Getty
This may be considered sacrilege but Van Dijk feels expensive at £5m given his individual performances across the last 18 months.
At one stage, the imperious Dutchman was almost a must-have selection regardless of his price but Dream Team bosses would be wise to wait and see which Van Dijk turns up this season before forking out £5m of their budget.
Similarly, Joel Matip at £3m would have once been in bargain-of-the-season territory but those days are almost certainly in the past.

Mauricio Pochettino in brutal dig at Chelsea transfer policy as he brands new signing as someone to ‘send on some loan’

MAURICIO POCHETTINO has launched a brutal dig at Chelsea’s summer transfer policy after the club’s latest signing.Chelsea agreed a £23.5million fee with Rennes for the signing of 19-year-old midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu with the midfielder expected to complete the move shortly.

Pochettino is keen to bolster a Chelsea midfield that currently boasts 23-year-old Conor Gallagher as its most experienced player in the central midfield role.
Ugochukwu made 35 appearances for Rennes last season despite his young age and has represented France at Under-19 level nine times.

But it’s clear that the Argentine does not see Ugochukwu as a player that will boost his midfield options, at least in the short term.
When asked whether the signing boosted his midfield after Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over rivals Fulham in a pre-season friendly, the manager said: “My information is he is a player that is from France that maybe they are signing with the idea to send on some loan, using a different club but that information was already in your laptop.

“There is nothing to say too much.”
The dismissal of Ugochukwu’s signing comes after Pochettino warned that Chelsea’s upcoming season could be a “mess” if Chelsea’s 29-man squad is not thinned.
The window has seen experienced midfielders Mason Mount and Matteo Kovacic leave.
And Pochettino is keen to replace these outgoing stars with some much needed experience in the midfield.

The club remain keen on a deal for 21-year-old Brighton midfielder who has two seasons of Premier League experience under his belt.
The midfielder shone last year, and was subject to two bids from Arsenal during last season’s January window.
Chelsea have so far had two bids for Caicedo rejected this summer, the second of which was worth £80m.
Brighton are holding out for their full £100m asking price amid reports that Chelsea bosses will attempt to negotiate this fee down.
Meanwhile Chelsea have agreed a £39m fee for 25-year-old French defender Axel Disasi from Monaco.
The centre-back, who has made four appearances for the French national team will provide some much-needed defensive reinforcement after Wesley Fofana’s latest knee injury. More

But since all charges were dropped he has been desperate to rebuild his life and wants to resume his footie career at Old Trafford.
A decision on his future at the Red Devils is now said to be imminent with the club set to make an announcement in the next two weeks, according to MailOnline.

Greenwood’s United contract runs until June 2025.
It comes after it was reported that Greenwood is said to be thrilled after Adidas backed his return following “positive” talks with the club.
It is believed other sponsors are set to follow suit.
Adidas are United’s biggest sponsors, with a new £900m extension to their partnership announced today.

“But, privately, he has told those close to him that he has learned a huge amount.
“He became a father for the first time earlier this month and realises he has to grow up.
“He is grateful to Adidas — to have a sponsor like that in his corner means the world.”
Greenwood remains suspended but a new training regime has been drawn up by United staff and he is being monitored.
Earlier this year, it was revealed Manchester United women’s team did not want him back at the club.
United have had contact with three Italian teams — Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan — over a loan move.
Greenwood, who joined United aged six, has made 129 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 35 goals. More

Man Utd star Brandon Williams in furious X-rated response after being blamed for Dortmund goal

MANCHESTER UNITED star Brandon Williams furiously swore at team-mate Tom Heaton on the pitch after getting the blame for conceding a goal. The pair lined up together in the first half of the fiery pre-season defeat to Borussia Dortmund last night.

And a mix-up at the back allowed Donyell Mallen to score his second goal in 18 SECONDS to turn the game on its head just before half-time.
Mallen had just volleyed past Heaton to equalise for Dortmund.
And straight after the restart, the ex-Burnley goalkeeper played a tricky pass to centre-back Victor Lindelof on the edge of the box.
The Swede in turn tried to play the ball on to Donny van de Beek but former United loanee Marcel Sabitzer intercepted and fed Malen to slot home, with the goalscorer onside due to Williams’ positioning.

That prompted Heaton to let rip at Williams, blaming the left-back for not getting out quickly enough.
But Williams was having none of it and hit back at Heaton, shouting: “My fault? It was your f*** up!”
The bust-up between Williams and Heaton was far from the only heated drama in the so-called friendly.
Earlier in the first half, Erik ten Hag dragged Omari Forson off after he got into an angry shoving match with Karim Adeyemi and Julian Ryerson and swung an arm following a kick out at the latter.

Ten Hag berated the youngster on the sidelines as he lectured him and sent Antony on with 38 minutes on the clock.
Heaton was replaced by new No1 Andre Onana at half-time – but that did not end the verbals between Red Devils team-mates.

Harry Maguire’s botched clearance nearly resulted in another Borussia Dortmund goal – and Onana was not afraid to let the former captain know about his error.
Youssoufa Moukoko struck the 71st-minute winner for the German giants.
And that ended a rough trip to the United States in pre-season.
After beating Arsenal in New York, United have lost their last three matches to Wrexham, Real Madrid and now Dortmund.
Ten Hag raged: “All of a sudden they gave two goals away and they really were giveaways.
“So that was already annoying but the last half an hour was bad, was a poor performance. We didn’t follow the rules at all.
“We have to keep the control and you have to keep the responsibility on the ball and it was the same on the 3-2 for Dortmund, so it can’t happen and it’s unforgivable even if it’s a friendly.”

Man Utd player ratings: Victor Lindelof’s blunder cost Red Devils against Borussia Dortmund while Diogo Dalot shines

MANCHESTER United have ended their US tour with another defeat, falling 3-2 to Borussia Dortmund. And they only have themselves to blame as individual errors led to each of Dortmund’s goals in Las Vegas.

Diogo Dalot scored a screamer from outside the box to open the scoring on SundayCredit: Getty
Those sparked a few heated exchanges between Red Devils players.
Donyell Malen had no complaints though, capitalizing on the chaos in Man Utd’s play to score two quick goals late in the first half before Youssoufa Moukoko netted the game-winner.
The Red Devils have a lot to think about with the new Premier League season approaching as the loss was their third in a row this preseason.
But who stood out and who struggled for Man Utd? Damian Burchardt rates every single player at Allegiant Stadium…
    READ MORE ON MAN UTD
    TOM HEATON – 6
Remained focused despite not having a lot to do early on and pulled off a number of confident saves. Heaton didn’t have much to say when Donyell Malen struck twice in two minutes to give Dortmund a lead in the first half.
    DIOGO DALOT – 7
Looked dangerous from the very start and it was Dalot who opened the scoring with a screamer from outside the box. He was also probably United’s most reliable defender on Sunday.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 4
Maguire noticeably struggled to clear the ball throughout the game, presenting Dortmund with a few scoring chances. He also could have done more to stop Karim Adeyemi’s entry pass before Donyell Malen equalised.
    VICTOR LINDELOF – 3
Lindelof looked composed and showed off some nice passing skills early on. But he was directly at fault for Dortmund’s second goal, foolishly giving the ball away close to the box, and looked shaky going forward.
    Most read in Football
    BRANDON WILLIAMS – 5
Really good performance at first from the 22-year-old, who protected the left flank well as United kept transitioning into a back-three when attacking. But his all-in dive helped Adeyemi move past the full-back and then set up Malen for his first goal.
    SCOTT MCTOMINAY – 6
    Quiet but solid.
DONNY VAN DE BEEK – 7
The Dutchman was particularly active on Sunday, causing Dortmund problems with high pressing. His passing and vision translated into a few promising chances – including Dalot’s goal, which van de Beek assisted.
    OMARI FORSON – 6
Started off strong and was heavily involved in United’s attacking play. But Forson then lost his cool and got involved in a brief scuffle with Adeyemi, earning a yellow card and causing ten Hag to take the 19-year-old off the field with seven minutes left in the first half.
    CHRISTIAN ERIKSEN – 6
Did a good job setting the pace for the Red Devils, contributing to their dominance in possession early on.
    FACUNDO PELLISTRI – 6
Good effort from the Uruguayan, who often posed a threat when on the field – even if it didn’t translate into much.
    JADON SANCHO – 6
Sancho did his best to make an impact while being the focal point of United’s attack against Dortmund. He showed off flair and creativity, linking up with van de Beek in the final third.
    SUBS:
    ANTONY – 7
Chaotic at first, but he then showed off awareness and decisiveness that allowed Antony to capitalize on Dortmund’s error and net an equalizer.
    ANDRE ONANA – 7
Came out for the second half focused and made a number of strong saves. He couldn’t do much when Youssoufa Moukoko settled the score.
    LUKE SHAW – 5
A bit shaky at the back after coming on.
    AARON WAN-BISSAKA – 5
    Wan-Bissaka’s poor pass started Dortmund’s counter-attack that give them a 3-2 lead.
    LISANDRO MARTINEZ – 5
Could have done more to prevent Dortmund from regaining the lead.
    JONNY EVANS – 5
Looked lost and slow when Dortmund made it 3-2.
    CASEMIRO – 6
Solid on both halves after checking in.
    BRUNO FERNANDES – 6
Great playmaking from the Portuguese as usual.
    MASON MOUNT – 5
Worryingly for then Hag, it was another quiet cameo from Mount this preseason.
