Paul Scholes’ ex-Man Utd team-mates laughed at midfielder for wearing ‘snide’ £50 boots when he returned to the club

PAUL SCHOLES was laughed at for wearing £50 boots when he returned to Manchester United – as he couldn’t ask Nike for a brand new pair in order to keep his comeback a secret. The ex-England star, now 48, revealed he was forced to buy a cheap pair of boots from JJB Sports for his 2012 comeback because he couldn’t let Nike know he was back.
Paul Scholes was mocked for his £50 plastic boots when making his surprise 2012 comeback
And Scholes revealed he got plenty of stick from old team-mate Jonny Evans for his choice of footwear ahead of his comeback game against rivals Manchester City.
Scholes told BBC Radio 5 Live: “I bought a pair of boots, I think they were about £50.
“They were all the ones the lads were wearing, obviously. Same colours and stuff, same patterns.
“But I believe I bought the cheap ones. It wasn’t until I was actually warming up on the pitch [that I realised]. I couldn’t get a pair of boots off Nike, they couldn’t send me a pair because we couldn’t tell them.
“Nobody knew, it was a big secret and it didn’t get announced until the teams were announced at City in the FA Cup.
“So I pulled these boots out and I thought they were good’uns. I paid £50 for these boots, they must be belters, these.
“I started warming up and Jonny Evans looks around and says, ‘Are they the snide ones you’ve bought of these?’
“[Scholes replied], ‘What do you mean snide, what’s wrong with them?’ Apparently I had plastic ones. They were alright.”

But Scholes admitted his comeback game was a ‘disaster’ after Man Utd nearly threw away a 3-0 lead against rivals City.
He continued: “Actually that game was a bit of a disaster for me. I came on in the game, I think we were 3-0 up against City.
“They had a man sent off, Vincent Kompany got sent off, I come on and after five minutes it was 3-2.
    ‘BRICKING IT’
“I was absolutely bricking it. I thought, ‘What am I doing, why have I come back here, what am I thinking of?’
“The rest of the season ended up OK. We didn’t win the league but we managed to win it the year after.”
In 2018, Scholes revealed even more details about his comeback – including the real reason he retired for good.
Scholes said: “I remember the game itself. We were 3-0 up when I came on and we were against ten men, and then it went back to 3-2.
“I was taking my gear off ready to come on and [City coach] David Platt said to me, ‘What the hell are you doing?’ and I went, ‘No idea’.
“At that time I wished I hadn’t done it. I think I gave a bad pass for a throw-in, and Sergio Aguero nipped on to it and scored.
Paul Scholes has won the most trophies of any English players
“The manager gave me another year, but I was gone. I remember playing Tottenham at home, we got beat 3-2.
“I played alright in possession, but I remember [Mousa] Dembele and Gareth Bale cruising past me.
“I wanted to retire early again that season, but I thought it’d be embarrassing so I stayed on.” More

Using over 500 litres of environmentally friendly paint and measuring the same width as its runway (2,275sqm), the message took two days to create and will be viewed by thousands of holidaymakers travelling through the airport over the next week.
The installation comes as excitement builds in the town ahead of the team’s first game against Brighton this Saturday.
The match will be Luton’s first in English football’s top flight since 1992 after beating the odds and earning promotion via the Championship play-offs at the end of last season.
Luton manager Rob Edwards said: “I speak on behalf of the whole team when I say that we are filled with immense pride and gratitude to our community.

“A tremendous thank you to London Luton Airport, for its remarkable show of support through the creation of this impressive good luck message on their flight path.
“This symbol of community will inspire the players for the games ahead and we hope we give fans a season to be proud of.”
The airport created the empowering artwork on behalf of the local community at Stockwood Park, Luton, as it sits beneath the airport’s flight path and close to the team’s training ground.
Following the team’s promotion, LLA is now the closest airport to a Premier League ground in the UK – just 3.1 miles from Kenilworth Road – meaning football fans from across the UK, Europe, the Middle East and Africa can fly into the airport to see a Premier League game.

Neil Thompson, operations director at London Luton Airport, said: “As members of the local community for the past 85 years, we felt it was important to commemorate this historic moment for the town and for the team and wanted to cheer them on from a high-altitude, as well as on the ground.
“We’re hoping Pelly [Ruddock Mpanzu] and the entire team can spend the season in the Premier League flying high but, whatever happens, we’ll be there alongside the fans to support them – up the Hatters.”
Midfielder Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu, who is the first player in footballing history to go from the non-league tiers of English football to the Premier League with the same club, visited the site to see the airport’s efforts to commemorate the team’s historical achievement.
Commenting on the design and his excitement, Pelly said: “The journey that this team and I have been on personally throughout my 10 years at Luton Town FC has been incredible.

“I’ve been bowled over by the love of the community during my years playing for the club, but seeing London Luton Airport create this today to cheer the team on has been out of this world.
“I can’t believe they’ve committed to showing their support by bringing their message and me to life on such a huge scale – we’re feeling confident for our first game and we’ll do all we can to prove people wrong.”
The newly appointed Premier League team recently travelled from the airport to Slovenia for their pre-season training camp.
The players were greeted to a warm welcome by LLA staff and passengers, and kindly posed for photographs and signed fans’ merchandise.
Kerri Skingle, a member of the guest experience team at London Luton Airport and an avid Luton Town fan, said: “The team’s promotion to the Premier League means so much to the people of the town, and it’s amazing that LLA wants to show the players this simple and friendly show of support for the upcoming season.

    Changing times
All stoppages except for bookings must be calculated “exactly” by officials.
PGMOL chiefs expect it to mean an average of just under 12 minutes of additional time per match.
Already it’s causing a major stir, with Manchester United defender Raphael Varane releasing a statement over the changes.

    Lay down the law
Two major law changes will be implemented this season.
A player adjudged to be “challenging for the ball” when they “deny an obvious goalscoring opportunity” in the box will only be yellow carded even if they are not attempting to play the ball.
Fifa and Ifab have also clarified what is now deemed “deliberate play” by defenders with regards to offside.
If a player is considered to be in control of the pass, attempt to gain possession or clearance, this would be a ‘deliberate play’ and the attacker in an offside position should not be penalised for offside.
An inaccurate or unsuccessful action does not change that the defender “deliberately played” the ball.
    Behaviour clampdown
Tough new rules for players and bosses include yellow cards for any time-wasting and automatic bans for three yellow cards for any coach or manager.
Bookings must be handed out if two or more players surround an official.
There is a lower bar for dissent as Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta found out in the Community Shield, as he was booked for waving an imaginary card and protesting a decision.

    VAR from over
An extra two VAR cameras at each end will mean the end of “blind spots”.
This should help with tight offside calls and highlight any before missed incidences.
    Winter break
The winter break is back, probably for one season only, with a full set of ten fixtures split across two weekends in mid-January to give the players a guaranteed rest.
Time for Manchester United’s Anthony Martial to get those winter gloves out.
    Fifth Champions League spot
