I’m a former Premier League star – now I have a very different job as a mortgage advisor

NATHAN BAKER has swapped footy for the FTSE in his retirement. The former Premier League defender made a career out of breaking up play and thwarting some of the best strikers in England.

Now he is banking on a new venture by brokering deals of his own – and ensuring house buyers don’t get caught in their any financial offside traps.
That is because Baker has qualified as a mortgage and insurance advisor.
The 32-year-old, who spent 13 years on the books with Aston Villa, cashed out on football last year after five seasons with Bristol City.
But rather than going into coaching, he has opted for a complete change of scene with Dudley-based company The Finance Family.

Baker wrote online: “After retiring from professional football last year I’m excited to share with you my new career path.
“I am now a fully qualified mortgage and insurance advisor with the goal to become a financial advisor.
“Properties and investments have always been a big interest of mine.
“Thank you everyone for your messages and support, time to get to work, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

“If you require my services please reach out for more info and I’d be happy to help. Look forward to meeting and working with you all.”
Baker made 294 senior club appearances for Villa, Bristol City and on loan at Lincoln and Millwall across 13 seasons as a professional footballer.
He managed five goals – although none of those came from his 79 games in the Premier League.
The former England Under-21 star suffered a horror head injury playing for the Robins in November 2021.
He had to be taken off on a stretcher and the ongoing concussion forced his early retirement nine months later.
Away from football, Baker married his long-term model partner and pilates instructor Catherine Hudson last year.
He proposed after a skydive in Dubai in 2019 and the couple welcomed their first baby, son Jax, in June 2021.
Settling down with his young family means he no longer posts about his exploits at the firing range – although he still loves to travel and has visited Dubai, California and Antigua with his glamorous wife and kid.

Chelsea on verge of spending £906MILLION on transfers under Todd Boehly but fans say ’12th position still awaits’

TODD BOEHLY is on the brink of taking his Chelsea spending on transfers to a staggering £906.8million. But fans joked that the mega-money side are still set for another poor season.
Todd Boehly has overseen the mammoth spending spree at Chelsea since buying the club in May 2022Credit: Richard Pelham / The Sun

Boehly bought Chelsea for £4.25billion in May 2022 and wasted no time splashing the cash on new transfers when the window opened.
Nine players signed permanent deals at Stamford Bridge with a further eight stars arriving in West London in January.

And the outrageous spending spree shows no signs of slowing down with another nine new faces confirmed this summer – plus Moises Caicedo will be announced very soon.
The Caicedo deal sees the Blues pay Brighton an eye-watering £115m, a new British transfer record fee.
    READ MORE ON CHELSEA
That eclipses their own record set in January when they paid Benfica £106m for Enzo Fernandez, although the deal could rise to £110m with add-ons.
The other biggest arrivals over the last year are Raheem Sterling (£47.5m), Marc Cucurella (£62m), Wesley Fofana (£75m), Mykhailo Mudryk (£88m) and Christopher Nkunku (£56m) – again taking into consideration possible extras to supplement the initial costs.
Kalidou Koulibaly, Benoit Badiashile and Noni Madueke all cost £35m with Malo Gusto (£30.7m), Nicolas Jackson (£30m) and debutant goalscorer Axel Disasi (£38m) also joining for big money.
The Blues spent £25m on new goalkeeper Robert Sanchez from Brighton with Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga both leaving through the exit door.

Gabriel Slonina (£12.6m), Carney Chukwuemeka (£20m), Cesare Casadei (£12m), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12m), Andrey Santos (£11m), David Fofana (£10.5m), Angela Gabriel (£13m) and Lesley Ugochukwu (£23.5m) all commanded eight-figure transfer fees.
And Jimmy-Jay Morgan (£6m), Ishe Samuels-Smith (£4m) and freebies Alex Matos, Omari Hutchinson and Diego Moreira have also linked up with the Chelsea youth set-up to complete the 26 permanent arrivals in the Boehly era before Caicedo follows.
Dujuan Richards will also arrive from Phoenix Academy in October when the Jamaican striker turns 18.
Koulibaly and Aubameyang have already been sold with striker Fofana, Gabriel, Slonina and Hutchinson all out on loan this term.
Chelsea are now just £93.2m shy of spending £1billion on incoming signings in just three windows – and pipping Liverpool to Romeo Lavia would put them even closer to that landmark figure.
However, the club have generated £1.2bn in sales since 2013-14 – including £208m this season with the likes of Mateo Kovacic, Kai Havertz and Mason Mount leaving.
    PAY THE PRICE?
But rival supporters are still unsure Boehly’s toy shop spending is guaranteed to translate into success on the pitch.
Mauricio Pochettino’s new side – who have no European football this season – drew 1-1 with Liverpool on the opening weekend of the new campaign and have a favourable run of fixtures.
But one Twitter user joked: “12th position still awaits them.”
Another said: “This is ridiculously ridiculous. It would be a very big shame if they end up not winning all the available trophies this season.”

A third added: “They now have to win the league to justify that amount of spending as if City or anyone else did, we would all be saying the same. No excuses win the league or it’s a failure.”
And a fourth simply wrote: “This just ridiculous.”

Real Madrid have announced Kepa’s signing
He joins the long list of Chelsea players to have left the club this summer, which includes Mason Mount, Kai Havertz and N’Golo Kante.
And some fans think Kepa is the latest Blue to upgrade by changing clubs.
One supporter reacted to the news saying: “Mount upgraded, Havertz, upgraded, Loftus-Cheek upgraded, Kepa upgraded.
“All went to bigger clubs but I’m supposed to believe they were the problem 😭😭”

Another fan simply added: “He is upgrading.”
A third said: “He chose the better club.”

Another commented: “He really went up a notch.”

He has made 163 appearances for the Blues but spent large spells out of the team after losing form.
Edouard Mendy was brought in to replace the Spaniard in 2020 but Kepa won his place back under Graham Potter last season.
But the capture of Robert Sanchez from Brighton meant an exit was always a possibility for Kepa this summer. More

Former captain Maguire looks set to leave Old Trafford this summer.
And Sky Sports report the Frenchman is among the top targets lined up by Erik ten Hag to bolster his back line.
It is claimed the defender will push hard to complete the move – although the two clubs are yet to agree a fee.
Pavard, 27, is into the final 12 months of his current contract at the Allianz Arena having joined from Stuttgart in 2019 for £31.4m.

He has no intention of signing an extension and wants to leave for a new venture.
However, despite his deal running out, Bayern are said to still want around £30m to £35m.
That fee, though, is more than United want to pay for the World Cup winner who can operate at right-back or centre-back.
And they will only get the Pavard deal over the line once Maguire’s exit has been confirmed.

I felt terrible for punching 76-year-old Roy Hodgson but his abs are harder than you’d think, says Sheff Utd’s Max Lowe

MAX LOWE thought he had hit rock bottom after losing at home on the Blades’ return to the Prem. Then he walked into the home dressing room and was ridiculed for picking a fight with a PENSIONER!

And Lowe was impressed by 76-year-old Hodgson’s strengthCredit: Getty
What made it worse for the defender was knowing he had come off second best for the second time that day.
At 26, Lowe is half a century younger than Palace boss Roy Hodgson, who celebrated his 76th birthday last Wednesday.
Yet the pair became involved in one of the most bizarre touchline fights the Premier League is likely to witness as the clock ticked down on Palace’s narrow win.
Lowe was racing to take a quick throw and his head was bowed when he thrust his arm out to prevent any Palace staff from impeding him.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Unfortunately for him, he managed to jab the former England boss in the belly, causing Hodgson’s hackles to rise.
Lowe revealed there was no respite for him when he returned to the red corner after the final whistle.
He revealed: “All the boys were laughing at me and saying, ‘That’s 1-0 to Roy’.
“Apparently, Roy said he was quite pleased at his reaction because he didn’t know he still had it in him.

“I didn’t either, to be fair. His abs are stronger than I thought! I was a bit shocked. I was laughing at the time… only Roy wasn’t laughing!
“I felt terrible afterwards when I realised who it was. In the heat of the moment I forgot where I was and I felt awful at full-time.
“Fair play to him, it was a competitive game and you could see that reflected by both teams on the pitch.
“It was obvious they have players with real good individual quality and we tried to work on that during the week — but it was a sloppy goal to lose, so we are disappointed.”
Hodgson was still in full raging bull mode as he adjusted his trouser belt after the scuffle.
He already has a CBE but the oldest swinger in the Prem might now turn his attention to adding WBO, WBC and WBA to his collection!
The oldest boss in Premier League history made no apologies for growing old disgracefully and reflected on a satisfying win, which was sealed four minutes into the second half.
His abs are stronger than I thought! I was a bit shocked. I was laughing at the time… only Roy wasn’t laughing!Max Lowe
It was created by another sprightly old-boy as 31-year-old Jordan Ayew was too quick in thought and movement for Ben Osborn and Lowe.
His wicked low cross was tucked away by Odsonne Edouard, who could have had a hat-trick had he converted an easy header or not had a ‘goal’ disallowed for offside — a fate also suffered by Ayew.
Hodgson’s side were clearly superior in strength, skill and Premier League nous, yet he still had to squeeze every last ounce of effort out of his players to get them over the line.
It is why the old bruiser would like to KO new Premier League rules which allow only one coach to approach the front of the technical area at any one time.
Roy rapped: “We are a passionate coaching team who put our heart and soul into our coaching sessions and our preparations.
“Most players at this level are going to be motivated. But sometimes they need a bit of inspiration, sometimes they need encouragement, sometimes they need a bit of help about something and I’ve always seen that as part of my job.
“It’s harder now they are reducing the number of people to one only — I don’t quite understand that. Coaching from the touchline is very much part of our jobs, that is what we are paid for.
    Read More on The Sun
“If you are not going to coach from a touchline then I don’t understand why we are at a game in the first place.
“Just send the players out then go and have a cup of tea in the directors’ lounge.” More

Erik ten Hag sends brutal message to Harry Maguire as £30m transfer to West Ham hangs in the balance

ERIK TEN HAG has told Harry Maguire: ‘If you don’t want to fight for your place then go’.Maguire’s £30million switch from Manchester United to West Ham has stalled on personal terms.
Erik ten Hag has told Harry Maguire to leave Man Utd if he doesn’t want to fight for his placeCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
He has a deal in place that cuts his weekly wages from £190,000 to £120,000, with United offering him a £6million pay-off to help offset the shortfall over his contract.
Still there is no agreement — although Maguire has looked a dispirited figure since having the captaincy taken off him earlier this summer.
But now manager Ten Hag has demanded the player commits fully to United or walks out of the door.
Ten Hag said: “For Harry, that is just how I described it. He has to fight for his place.
    Read more on man utd
“He has the ability to be a top-class centre-back and he is the best for England so why shouldn’t he be the best for us — but he has to prove it.
“When he is not confident enough to fight then he has to go. Then he has to make a decision but I’m happy with him.”
Maguire is in the squad for tonight’s Premier League opener at home to Wolves.
The pre-season proved that Ten Hag can field two strong sides when they twice played on consecutive days.

And the boss wants those not in tonight’s starting line-up to challenge themselves to get in that regular starting XI.
He said: “We don’t have a squad with 11 players, and the last year proved definitely we need all the players.
“So that means you need some high-level players who are maybe not starting but that can change so there is an internal competition — everyone has to fight for his place.
“Every player, when they are good, will get their games but no one can play all the games and finally you find out what is the best team.
“In the squad now all the positions are double and every player has the perspective to fight for his place.
“It is up to the players if they have game time or less.”
One player who will not be figuring tonight is £72m new striker Rasmus Hojlund, who is still getting fit after suffering a slight injury in pre-season with his now former club Atalanta.
For Harry, that is just how I described it. He has to fight for his place.Erik ten Hag
Ten Hag said: “We are not in a rush. We know without him we have a strong team and the position is covered.
“It is about him getting to the right fitness level and then we have to integrate him in training and bring him in for the games.
“So we take our time. It is not about winning in this moment, it is about winning in the long term.”
Ten Hag believes United are ready for winning as well.
Last season the Red Devils qualified for the Champions League after finishing third, won their first trophy in six years with the Carabao Cup and reached the FA Cup final.
And Ten Hag, who took over in July 2022, said: “We couldn’t expect this, where we are now, when we look back a year.
“We showed we could beat all the good teams, the best teams in the world.
    Read More on The Sun
“We have a really good foundation and now we have to work on it and do it consistently.
“If we work well, with the right plan and efforts in place and we work with consistency, we will be more successful — and we can make that step.” More

Chelsea FINALLY agree record £115m transfer for Brighton’s Moises Caicedo after beating Liverpool to midfield star

CHELSEA have agreed a British transfer record £115million deal for the signing of Moises Caicedo from Brighton. The £115m fee eclipses the previous £107m record Chelsea paid Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in January.

Caicedo snubbed interest from Liverpool after they agreed a £111m fee with Brighton last week.
But Caicedo rejected a move to Anfield as he has had his heart set on a move to Chelsea from the beginning of the window.
According to Fabrizio Romano, there is also a sell-on clause included for Brighton as well as the historic £115m fee.
It is added that medical tests have been booked with Chelsea pipping Liverpool to the deal, following their 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge.

The Athletic say an eight-year contract has been agreed with the option of a ninth with medicals booked for tomorrow and an official announcement to follow right after.
Brighton will make an incredible profit on Caicedo having signed him for just £4.5m from Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle in 2021.
He was one of the standout midfielders in the Premier League last season, making 37 league appearances for the Seagulls as they finished 6th in the Premier League.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had confirmed that a deal had been agreed to bring the star to Anfield.

But a deal started to stall as it was claimed that Caicedo was having second thoughts about the move.
And as revealed by SunSport, the South American rejected the deal as he had his heart set on moving to Chelsea.
Chelsea desperately need new midfielders following the exits of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and N’Golo Kante this summer.
And Caicedo now looks to be Fernandez’s new midfield partner with Southampton’s Romeo Lavia also close to a Chelsea move.
Liverpool were in for Lavia too and after losing Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita, they are short in midfield.
