Premier League prize money: How much can each team earn in the 2023/24 season?

PREMIER LEAGUE clubs are guaranteed to earn a fortune simply from being in England’s top flight. But how much can each team stand to make in the 2023-24 campaign?

    Premier League prize money explained
Midway through the 2010s, the Premier League stopped publicising how much each club would make in TV revenue.
But as the breakdown is known, the figures can be calculated.
Taking into account equal shares as well as merit payments, the champions would stand to make a basic £143,320,000.
They would then make more, depending on how many times they were selected for TV.

Each time a team is on TV in the Premier League, they stand to receive a £1.2m “facility fee”.

Premier League prize money position breakdown
Each team receives £31million in equal shares of the domestic TV revenue.
They then receive a merit payment, which is determined by where they finish in the table.
The basic domestic merit share for the team that comes 20th is worth approximately £1,688,958.

For each place up the table a team finishes, their domestic merit share goes up by another £1,688,958.
This means that the team that finishes top, in last season’s case Manchester City, would receive £33,760,000 in domestic merit payments.
Clubs also receive around a £63m share from overseas deals.
The team in 20th is then paid a further £478,000 in overseas merit payments – going up by the same sum for every place higher in the table a team finishes.
This means that Man City will have received approximately £9,560,000 in overseas merit payments last season.
Teams then receive a further £6m in central payments.
The rest of their money is then determined by how many times they are selected to be on TV.
For each Premier League match a club has broadcast, they receive a £1.2m facility fee.
It is thought Man City earned about £172m in the Premier League last season, taking into account revenue per broadcast match as well.

Last season each club’s TV money, not taking into account their respective facility fees, will have looked like this:

    Man City £143,320,000
    Arsenal £141,154,000
    Man Utd £138,988,000
    Newcastle £136,822,000

Chelsea set to hijack Liverpool AGAIN as Romeo Lavia ‘chooses to join Blues’ with Moises Caicedo also on brink

ROMEO LAVIA has snubbed a move to Liverpool in favour of joining Chelsea. The two clubs – who drew 1-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday – were locked in talks to sign Moises Caicedo.

And despite Liverpool agreeing a deal with Brighton, Chelsea swooped in with a Premier League record £115million offer.
Caicedo chose Stamford Bridge over Anfield and after completing a medical, his move will be imminently announced.
But in the midst of the transfer pursuit, Chelsea and Liverpool were also battling to sign Southampton’s Lavia.
And Jurgen Klopp’s side had come to terms over a £60m move.

Although lightening looks to have struck twice as Chelsea convinced the player to join them instead.
According to The Athletic, Chelsea are closing in on a £50m deal plus add-ons.

The Blues tried to sign last summer and had a £50m offer on deadline day rejected as the player only signed weeks earlier.
Chelsea desperately need new recruits following the exits of Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic, Mason Mount and N’Golo Kante this summer.

And a double swoop for Caicedo and Lavia – totalling around £165m combined – gives Enzo Fernandez new midfield partners.
But it leaves Liverpool short in midfield having lost Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and Naby Keita in the summer.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp had confirmed that a deal had been agreed to bring Caicedo to Merseyside.
But he has been left empty handed following Chelsea’s pair of transfer heists.

Man Utd vs Wolves LIVE: Red Devils eye perfect start to new season against opponents in disarray – TV and stream info

MANCHESTER United’s Premier League 2023/24 opener sees them welcome Wolves to Old Trafford tonight. The Red Devils had an indifferent pre-season having comfortably beat Community Shield winners Arsenal and French side Lens.

Gary O’Neil will take charge of his first game as Wolves manager at Old Trafford after being appointed this weekCredit: Getty
But in between those results, Erik ten Hag’s men lost THREE matches on the bounce.
However, playtime is over as United look to make a winning start to the new campaign and they’re out to prove a point.
The Manchester club looked much improved last term, but will be wanting to show they can mix it with the big boys once again and fight for the title.
They start the new season by hosting Wolves who are trying to steady the ship after Julen Lopetegui’s shock exit this week.
    Read more on Man Utd
The Midlands club have announced former Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil as the new manager at Molineux.
The 40-year-old will have the tough task of toppling Ten Hag’s team on Monday night as he tries to make the most of the infamous ‘new manager bounce’.
He’ll have plenty to worry about though with Wolves losing star man Ruben Neves to Al-Hilal this summer alongside a whole host of other players who have left the club during the window.
Man United on the other hand have made big investments as they try and improve on last season’s third place finish in the Premier League.
    Most read in Football
Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund have all come through the doors at Old Trafford, although the latter won’t be available for Monday’s clash.
    What is their form like?
Man United have been a mixed bag in pre-season, but will take confidence from their strong end to last term’s league campaign where they won four on the trot to secure Champions League football.
Wolves’ pre-season preparations on the other hand have been remarkably solid despite their managerial problems.
They are undefeated in all of their warm-up friendlies and even managed a shock 1-0 win over Portuguese giants Porto.
What is the team news and any injuries to worry about?
Erik ten Hag will be forced to start the 2023/24 campaign without Amad Diallo (knee), Kobbie Mainoo (ankle) and Tyrell Malacia (muscular).
Mega summer signing Hojlund is also unavailable having sustained a ‘small issue’ during his pre-season training with former side Atalanta.

However, Frenchman Anthony Martial should be ready to return following his muscular injury.
Meanwhile, it is all positive signs for Wolves boss Gary O’Neil as the quartet of Joao Gomes, Mario Lemina, Sasa Kalajdzic and Chiquinho should all be available for the tough test at Old Trafford.
Who will be the star men?
Marcus Rashford was Man Utd’s stand out player last season and it’d be no surprise if he was to be their star once again.
He scored 17 goals in the Premier League last term and you can expect him to bag on a regular basis again this season.
As for Wolves, they’re looking for a new star man after selling club captain Neves this summer.
Matheus Cunha has completed his permanent £44million move from Atletico Madrid after he spent last season on loan at Molineux.
New boss O’Neil will be hoping he can get the best of his megabucks forward if he’s to pull off a shock victory in his first game in charge.

    What have the managers said?
Erik ten Hag has been raving about new signing Mason Mount ahead of what will likely be his competitive debut for the club.
He said in a recent interview: “I’m sure he will contribute to the success of United because he is a quality player.”
    SunSport prediction
Manchester United will be looking to impress their home fans on the opening day against a Wolves team that will have barely had enough time for the dust of Julen Lopetegui’s departure to settle.
Gary O’Neil could find it too hard to organise his new squad in time to pull off a huge result and United should find themselves comfortable victors.
    Prediction: Manchester United 2-0 Wolves
When is Man Utd vs Wolves?

Manchester United’s opening Premier League fixture against Wolves will take place on Monday, August 14.
It is scheduled to get underway at 8pm BST.
Old Trafford in Manchester is the allocated arena for this huge match and it can host approximately 74,310 fans.
Goals from Anthony Martial and Alejandro Garnacho saw the Red Devils run out 2-0 winners when the sides last met in May.

What TV channel is it on and can it be live streamed?

Manchester United vs Wolves will be broadcast LIVE on Sky Sports Main Event and Premier League in the UK.
Coverage is scheduled to commence from 6:30pm BST on both channels – an hour and a half before kick-off.
Fans can also stream the match through NOW TV.
Alternatively, SunSport will have minute-by-minute coverage of the entire action including build-up and post-match reaction.

Ex-Premier League maverick Marko Arnautovic ‘agrees sensational transfer return to former club’

But now he is in line to go back after Bologna agreed an £8.6million transfer with personal terms agreed last week, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Inter have been on the scout for a striker after pulling out of signing Romelu Lukaku, who entered talks with Juventus.
Arnautovic, 34, scored 10 in 21 games last season but suffered a foot injury towards the back end.
The forward made his name in England with Stoke and West Ham, where he infamously forced through a move to the Chinese Super League.

He was with Shanghai Port for two years before moving back to Italy with Bologna in 2021.
Arnautovic was last summer linked with a move to Manchester United, which infuriated the Old Trafford faithful.
After the move broke down, it was speculated that the United board pulled the plug amid supporter backlash.
But Bologna’s director of football, Marco Di Vaio, claimed it was Arnautovic who rejected the move.

Di Vaio told Corriere dello Sport “No, no.
“Manchester United did not back down because of those fans, but only because Arnautovic has understood that he is at the centre of our project now and in the coming years.
“Marko behaved like a true champion, realising what he represents for Bologna as a team and a city.”

How Newcastle could line up at end of transfer window with even stronger XI than team that demolished Aston Villa

NEWCASTLE got their season off to a flying start by hammering Aston Villa 5-1… and their starting XI could get even stronger. The Toon saw summer signings Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes score on their competitive debuts on Saturday night.

And more new players could soon join as manager Eddie Howe looks to bolster his squad ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League.
Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney is on Newcastle’s radar as they explore a potential loan move.
The Gunners would prefer to sell and he could be available for around £30million – although an injury to Jurrien Timber could throw a spanner in the works.
Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella is also an option to compete for the position with Dan Burn due to him dropping down the pecking order under new boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Newcastle are also looking to add a new centre-back to their squad.
Crystal Palace star Joachim Andersen is supposedly a leading candidate, but the Eagles could demand between £40m and £50m.
The Dane could partner the left-sided defender Sven Botman at the back and rotate with Fabian Schar.
There is plenty of selection dilemmas for Howe elsewhere on the pitch.

Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almiron, Jacob Murphy and Barnes will battle for roles on the wing.
Alexander Isak scored two excellent goals versus Villa as Callum Wilson showed there is no room for complacency as he also found the back of the net off the subs bench.

I don’t count Man Utd as part of my career even though Sir Alex Ferguson called me an exceptional talent

NICK POWELL doesn’t count his Manchester United stint as part of his career. The mercurial midfielder joined the Red Devils as an 18-year-old in a £6million move from hometown side Crewe in 2012.

Powell had already managed to get 64 appearances and 16 goals under his belt as a teen, with Sir Alex Ferguson calling him an “exceptional talent” as he was unveiled alongside Shinji Kagawa.
The England youth international scored on his United debut after coming on as a late substitute during a 4-0 win over Wigan in September 2012.
It would go on to be his only goal for the club, however, with things not going to plan.
A malignant tumour was discovered on Powell’s spine during that season, forcing the promising star to go under the knife.
    Read More Football Stories
Following his return he struggled to move across the pitch in the same way, picking up a series of niggling injuries along the way.
While Ferguson’s decision to retire in the summer of 2013 also made matters more difficult.
Loan spells at Wigan, Leicester and Hull followed, before Powell was released by United in 2016.
Now looking back on his Old Trafford experience as a 29-year-old, Powell told the Sport Bible: “I think the biggest thing for United fans is they think I had a bad attitude.

BETTING SPECIAL – BEST SPORTS BETTING APPS IN THE UK
“They say I’m such a failure or a flop. But I’m like, I don’t really count Manchester United as part of my career. It’s a nice thing to have on your CV but listen, I only played nine games. It’s not like I was a United player.
“People say, ‘Oh you played at Old Trafford. You played for Man Utd’ and I just say, ‘Did I really? I made three starts and six sub appearances. It wasn’t great.
“I just think, because it’s such a big club people sort of go, ‘Well most people don’t get to do it’ but I didn’t really get to live it.
“I really appreciated the opportunity. I just didn’t take it as seriously as I should have.”
As a mature adult now, studying for a post-playing career in financial planning, Powell is able to look back on his past mistakes.
He has admitted not looking after himself as he should have, adding: “I didn’t care about my diet until I was 25. I remember at Crewe, I used to eat McDonald’s after every game because McDonald’s was around the corner.
I used to have Domino’s every dayNick Powell
“When I went to United, I didn’t know how to cook so I used to have Domino’s every day. I’d get to a point in my apartment where, I’m not joking, there’d be 15 boxes of Domino’s stacked up. I’d be standing there like, ‘Oh right, I best put these out in the bin.’
“But yeah, like I said, that’s laziness. It’s not professional. If you’re that in love with football, and that in love with getting better, you either pay for a chef or learn to cook. I’m the tightest man alive so I’m thinking, ‘I’m not paying someone to cook me some food in my own house.’
“I’ve always been labelled as someone with a bad attitude. And it wasn’t that. I just wasn’t professional enough. I didn’t know what was needed. I never had the mindset of wanting to be the best. My mindset was, get me on a Saturday and I’ll hopefully do something good.
“Until the age of 25, my whole career was trying to find the biggest shortcut possible to make sure I could still play football.”
Powell spent three years at Wigan following his United release, before joining Stoke under Nathan Jones in 2019.
He left the Potteries earlier this year, turning down interest from Wrexham to sign a three-year deal at League Two Stockport County.

The former United man has started both of his side’s league matches so far this season, although they have slumped to defeat in both.
On his latest move, he concluded: “It’s perspective, isn’t it? They can have their thoughts on it. I don’t know. For me, it was right. I could have happily stayed in certain leagues or gone somewhere else. I know my reasons. It doesn’t bother me.”
