Erik ten Hag explains decision to start Anthony Martial against Nottingham Forest on landmark appearance for striker

MANCHESTER UNITED manager Erik ten Hag decided to start Anthony Martial against Nottingham Forest after “building him very carefully”.Martial has been plagued by injury in the last few years and just came back from a hamstring issue he suffered late last season.

The striker seemed certain to play second fiddle to summer signing Rasmus Hojlund, who was left out of the squad due to fitness issues, but it seems like Ten Hag still has faith in him.
Thus, the Dutch tactician started Martial in the Premier League match against Forest at Old Trafford.
And the 53-year-old head coach was convinced the 27-year-old is ready for action after a successful pre-season.
Ten Hag said: “We built him very carefully throughout the whole pre-season.

“So he did a lot of work, individual, the last weeks with the team and he’s ready to play.”
Martial looked destined for the sidelines once the Premier League season kicked off.
The France international was left on the bench during United’s premiere match against Wolves earlier this month.
But the ex-Monaco star came on as a second-half substitute at Tottenham a few days later.

Martial fell out of favour at Old Trafford last year when he was sent out on loan to Sevilla.
However, Ten Hag gave him a second chance last season and he amassed a total of nine goals and three assists in 29 appearances.
However, that wasn’t enough to establish him as Cristiano Ronaldo’s successor in United’s No9 position. More

Chelsea fans all think Jose Mourinho knows exactly why Thiago Silva keeps snubbing captain’s armband

CHELSEA fans are convinced they know the reason why Thiago Silva keeps rejecting the captain’s armband.Blues boss Mauricio Pochettino named Reece James as the club’s new captain earlier this summer following the departure of Cesar Azpilicueta.

However, the full-back sustained a hamstring injury just one game into the new season.
Ben Chilwell has since been handed the armband, but the defender briefly passed it over to Thiago Silva after being substituted during Friday’s clash with Luton.
Rather than accepting the captaincy for the final few minutes of the game, Silva told Enzo Fernandez to take the armband instead.
Fans are now convinced they know why the Brazilian rejected the chance to lead the team.

A famous quote from Jose Mourinho resurfaced on social media earlier this week.
The now-Roma boss previously discussed the difference between a leader and a captain.
He said: “Being a captain and wearing the armband doesn’t mean being a leader. I had a captain who couldn’t be a leader.
“People associate wearing the armband with being the team leader. It’s not like that. Several times the captain is not the leader – Javier Zanetti and John Terry, yes they were.”

Mourinho added: “You can’t buy leaders, or create leaders but when you have a leader on your team, your team is one step ahead.
“Unfortunately, the world of football is now all about image and people focus more on those who claim to be the leaders, rather than those who really are.”
Chelsea fans were quick to react to the quote after watching Silva snub the armband.
One person tweeted: “Perfect explanation for Thiago Silva giving the armband to Enzo last night even when Chilwell gave it to him when his number came up.”
Another wrote: “Thiago Silva and Reece James.”
While a third agreed, adding: “Just like current Chelsea James and Thiago Silva.”

Mauricio Pochettino says Chelsea star can be ‘one of the greatest’ in the Premier League after Luton triumph

He scored his first Chelsea goal on Friday as Pochettino’s side cruised to a 3-0 win over newly-promoted Luton.
And the former Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss is confident that it was a sign of things to come.
After the match, Pochettino said: “We knew Nicolas Jackson’s quality when we signed him, we saw that before. It is not that we ask him to run and press the ball, he is quality in the way he recovers the ball, but he also can finish.
“It is only a matter of time, once he settles into the Premier League, he will show it more.

“Nicolas Jackson has top quality. I have no doubt that he can become one of the greatest strikers in the Premier League.”
Jackson scored 13 goals and provided six assists for Villarreal before moving to Stamford Bridge earlier this summer.
And former Chelsea defender Scott Minto has likened him to Didier Drogba.
Speaking to talkSPORT after Chelsea’s clash with West Ham, the 52-year-old said: “You know who he reminded me of in that first half? Although he’s got to do it for about four more years, maybe even five, Drogba.

“I was like, ‘Whoosh, tell you what, this is a player’. Now as I say, I’m very weary of using those words Didier and Drogba with any kind of Chelsea no.9 at the moment.
“It’s only been Diego Costa that’s kind of lived up to any kind of hype and there’s been some big, big names, not just wearing the no.9 but playing up front for Chelsea.

Spiky Mike Dean is quizzed live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday after fury over ‘pathetic’ VAR call for Chelsea clash

FORMER Premier League ref Mike Dean became defensive when questioned live on Sky Sports over his “pathetic” VAR call last season.Dean has hit back at criticism after his comments referring to a VAR incident sparked outrage.
Former VAR official Mike Dean says the reaction to his confession has been blown out of proportionCredit: twitter @SkySportsNews
The former referee received a live TV grilling on Soccer Saturday following his revelations about a Premier League game last season.
Dean admitted this week that he made a “pathetic” error in the clash between Chelsea and Tottenham last August.
The now retired official confessed that he failed to correct an on-pitch error because he didn’t want to cause close friend Anthony Taylor “grief”.
He was on VAR duty and chose not to recommend an on-field review after Cristian Romero had pulled Marc Cucurella’s hair in the build-up to Harry Kane’s 96th-minute equaliser.

Dean claimed that he decided against the referral due to the fiery nature of the derby and that his “mate” Taylor didn’t deserve further pressure.
PGMOL chiefs responded to Dean’s comments with a strongly worded statement on Friday afternoon.
But Dean has now defended himself, insisting that his use of the word “mate” has been blown out of proportion.
Dean, 55, said: “It’s funny because that’s all been blown out of context.

“What I’ve said is old news, it’s been out in news reports before maybe four or five months ago, so it’s not new news.
“I refer to him [Taylor] as a mate, I mentioned before that what you’ve got to look at in context is that you might not like some guys in your refereeing group.
“But at three o’clock on a Saturday afternoon, they’re your mates and you want your mates to do well, so the mate thing has been blown all out of proportion.
“I want to support the referee as much as I can; that’s what you do as a VAR.
“Yes, he was wrong and I should have sent him to the screen but to say I didn’t send him over because he’s a mate is an absolute farce.
“And it’s just been blown out of proportion. It’s just people trying to make a story.”
Chelsea fans have come out again to ridicule the bizarre justification.
One fuming fan wrote: “Can’t hide now after admitting you manipulated a game”.
Another added: “‘Blown out of proportion’ 😂 he admitted his decision was influenced by his mate”.
A third wrote: “Absolute disgrace. We’re supposed to believe it isn’t corruption”.

A fourth declared: “He is a man under pressure. Admitted cheating now trying to worm out of it”.
From the start of the 2023/24 campaign, he has been Sky Sports’ referee analyst on Soccer Saturday.

Brighton 1 West Ham 3: Hammers finally banish Seagulls demons in incredible fashion to go top of table

WEST HAM and David Moyes banished their Brighton demons in incredible fashion to move to the top of the table. The Hammers had never beaten Brighton in the Premier League before this weekend, but it was 13th time lucky for the east Londoners.

It was West Ham’s first win over Brighton in the Premier LeagueCredit: Getty
West Ham may be top for just a matter of hours, but considering a chaotic summer and slow start caused so much damage a year ago – this is some start.
The Amex was the site of one of Moyes’ lowest moments at West Ham when Roberto De Zerbi’s side battered the Irons 4-0 last season.
But how different this felt – a clinical away performance inspired at first by James Ward-Prowse’s first West Ham goal.
There was then some brilliant counter-attacking from Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio after the break before some good old grit following Pascal Gross’ late goal.
All that against arguably the best Brighton side they will have faced compared to their last 12 attempts.
Moyes admitted that preparing to face De Zerbi’s side had left him with a thumping headache this week.
The plan the Scot had crafted after days of deliberation was to frustrate and hit quickly – and how it worked.
There was almost an early lead through Antonio, after Lucas Paqueta slipped a wonderful low ball into the path of the striker, who sent a limp shot at Seagulls debutant Bart Verbruggen, surprisingly selected ahead of Jason Steele by De Zerbi.
CASINO SPECIAL – BEST ONLINE CASINOS FOR 2023
After two warning shots, Brighton tried to turn the screw as West Ham sat in.
But the most the Seagulls could produce was a low shot from Billy Gilmour which fizzed wide of the near post after a spell of pressure.
West Ham were sitting and waiting for a mistake and were ready to pounce when one came.
Ward-Prowse, hugely energetic in the middle, raced in to cut out Adam Webster’s pass and thumped a ball forward for Antonio to chase down the left.
As the summer signing made a dash for the box, Webster was making things worse as he was left in a heap by West Ham’s No9.
Antonio drove into the area and squared for Ward-Prowse who managed to turn the ball home after his first effort had struck Gilmour’s back.
After two assists on his debut last week this was an example of why Moyes pushed so hard to sign the 28-year-old.
After Evan Ferguson almost levelled things up with a shot at Alphonse Areola on the turn, Ward-Prowse was back throwing himself in front of shots in the Hammers penalty box.
Brighton were struggling to find a way through West Ham’s block, but the Hammers then lost a crucial brick in their wall when Tomas Soucek was forced off after being punched in the head by Verbruggen as the two contested a dangerous Ward-Prowse free-kick.
They soldiered on without the Czech, however.
Debutant Edson Alvarez was just as impressive alongside Ward-Prowse, calm and composed in possession.
West Ham’s new midfield is looking rather sharp, but Brighton are still looking to rebuild their own following the sale of Moises Caicedo.
For all their neat possession, the Seagulls were struggling to create their usual abundance of chances.
Ferguson, the towering teenage striker, looked their most like source of a leveller and saw an early second half header palmed away well by Areola.
The Hammers were struggling to keep the ball but still posed a threat on the break, with Bowen prodding an effort wide of the far post and Emerson clipping the top of the crossbar.
They were warnings ignored by Brighton.
As the Seagulls overplayed on the edge of West Ham’s box, the visitors seized their moment.
Antonio collected the ball in the left-back spot and played forward to Benrahma on his own down the left.
The Algerian curled a stunner of a pass over for Bowen, who cushioned it with his first touch and rolled home West Ham’s second with his next.
Moyes jumped for joy and came close to repeating his jig from Prague on the touchline while De Zerbi was hopping mad.
He was leaping into the air again just six minutes later when Antonio joined the party, collecting from Bowen before holding off and turning Webster – again – and finishing well.
West Ham came within a whisker of adding a brilliant fourth through Ward-Prowse, before Gross rifled in Brighton’s 81st minute consolation.
Brighton threw everything forward to try and created a nervy finish but Areola made a string of superb late stops to just keep the Seagulls at bay.

Everton 0 Wolves 1: Misery for rock-bottom Toffees as Kalajdzic snatches late win after Sa’s save-of-season contender

WOLVES substitute Sasa Kalajdzic scored a late winner two minutes after coming off the bench as Everton manager Sean Dyche’s decision to turn to some new faces produced a depressingly familiar outcome. The Toffees dominated this Premier League match – having 15 shots – but remain goalless and pointless in the 270 minutes they have played so far this season, as the visitors scored with their only effort on target in the 87th minute.

Fans streaming out of Goodison had seen it all before as recently as a fortnight ago when a similar performance against Fulham also saw them lose 1-0 as they endured their worst start to a season since 1990-91.
But the supporters in old gold did not care as they headed back down the M6 celebrating their first win of the campaign – secured by a player making only his third appearance after rupturing his ACL in his first match last season – and their third in succession at Goodison Park for the first time.
It was bizarre to see the game touted as a must-win fixture for both sides with almost a week still left in August but such is the anticipated struggles of the two clubs, who were only lifted out of the last two places in the table by Luton’s defeat at Chelsea on Friday, it did take on the appearance of a “relegation six-pointer”.
Wolves boss Gary O’Neil will have taken some satisfaction from the result, having seen his final match as Bournemouth manager on the final day of last season end in a 1-0 defeat which kept Everton up late on for the second campaign running.
The visitors effected a classic smash-and-grab as they were second-best for the majority of the game but benefited from their opponents’ toothlessness.
It was tough on Everton, who were energised by Dyche’s decision to put his faith in youth to some degree.
The two loudest cheers at the pre-match team announcement were for Lewis Dobbin and Jarrad Branthwaite, aged 20 and 21 respectively, and they responded in kind with the sort of performances fans have been craving for too long: determined, committed and, in places, vibrant.
Dobbin offered an attacking thrust from the left side of midfield, much needed in the absence of the injured Dwight McNeil, while Branthwaite brought a degree of assuredness – courtesy of a loan spell in Dutch football at PSV Eindhoven – alongside James Tarkowski. His 6ft 5in height was an added bonus in both penalty areas.
CASINO SPECIAL – BEST ONLINE CASINOS FOR 2023
Dyche took what might be considered the bold option of starting the pair – and Arnaut Danjuma up front – when he could have stuck with experienced centre-back Michael Keane and brought in Neal Maupay for the injured Dominic Calvert-Lewin but the former Burnley boss had presumably seen enough of what they offered and decided it was not enough.
It helped inject some early urgency into the game but it soon became apparent the team was treading a familiar path.
The running of Danjuma, centrally, and Dobbin, wide left, gave the appearance of being more threatening but the lack of cutting edge remained a problem.
Even when Danjuma was put through by Amadou Onana in the 14th minute, he looked offside and when Jose Sa tipped his shot onto the post, the flag went up.
Tarkowski sliced wildly into the side-netting after Sa could only parry a shot from Dobbin from James Garner’s fierce drive into the box, Branthwaite headed over an Ashley Young free-kick and Danjuma volleyed wide from Nathan Patterson’s hanging cross.
Right-back Patterson’s improvement after two poor games added an extra dimension to Everton’s play but – without a spearhead – they failed to capitalise on his deliveries into the box.
Danjuma and Branthwaite, who headed into the arms of Sa, continued the tale of missed chances and it appeared recent history would repeat itself when Fabio Silva turned home Pedro Neto’s with Wolves’ first shot on target in the 57th minute but Everton were spared by the offside flag.
Encouraged, Silva then fired wide with only Jordan Pickford to beat after getting a run on Tarkowski.
Sa denied Danjuma and then, equally brilliantly, Abdoulaye Doucoure after the midfielder’s misjudged diving header bounced up and was tipped over.
Everton’s £15million summer signing Youssef Chermiti was given his first 25 minutes for his new club but it was Doucoure who continued to look the most threatening breaking from midfield and yet another offside decision kept the match goalless after he had cut inside on his left foot.
Then came the sucker punch as Kalajdzic made the sort of impact inside 120 seconds which Everton have failed to do for 18 months as he rose highest to glance in Pedro Neto’s hanging, inswinging cross.

Bournemouth 0 Tottenham 2: Maddison inspires Spurs to win with first goal and brilliantly hits back at X-rated chants

YOU had to admire the ballsiness of the Bournemouth fans picking on James Maddison. The England star was running this game and had just given Spurs an early lead.

Dejan Kulusevski grabbed Spurs’ second goalCredit: Getty
Yet some home supporters here at the Vitality still saw fit to goad the 26-year-old.
First came a chant of “Southgate’s right, you’re f***ing sh***” as he waited to take a corner.
Then, as he had a sip of water during a break in play, an individual in red and black had a rant at Maddison from the stands.
The midfielder just smiled, squirted his water bottle and pointed to the scoreboard.
It was a bold strategy, calling out the playmaker, especially when he was playing so well.
Safe to say it did not work out, as Maddison once again proved how perfect he is for this Ange Postecoglou system.
And why, at just £45million when other midfielders are going for more than double that, he may well be the bargain of the summer.
Dejan Kulusevski wrapped this win up with his first goal of the season after the break, taking Postecoglou’s points tally from his opening three games as Spurs chief to an impressive seven.

Maddison had been an injury doubt for this game, having hurt his knee in last week’s excellent 2-0 win over Manchester United.
He had performed admirably in that victory too, having grabbed a pair of assists on the opening-day draw at Brentford.
But he shook off any doubts about his fitness to start here in the driving rain coming in off the Channel.
And once again he looked in tip-top condition, causing Andoni Iraola’s side problems every time he got the ball.
Though he should have opened his account for Spurs earlier than he did.
Neto’s horror kickout hit Maddison who, after exchanging passes with Son Heung-min, had the goal at his mercy but could not beat the Cherries keeper.
The ball deflected up into the air but Richarlison could not turn home the rebound, summing up his luck in front of goal so far.
Yet shortly after, on 17 minutes, Maddison did find the back of the net to complete a well-worked move involving Postecoglou’s exciting, new midfield three.
Yves Bissouma, who was excellent again, gave the ball to Manchester United-slayer Pape Sarr.
The young Frenchman sent an inch-perfect pass through to Maddison, who had timed his run well, and the Three Lions man turned it home.
It extended his terrific run of form away from home in the Premier League, with this his 18th goal involvement in his last 20 fixtures on the road, with that figure equally split between goals and assists.
That statistic only served to make Bournemouth fans’ taunts even more silly.
And though it is true that Southgate has taken a long time to be convinced by Maddison, he is a big part of his plans now.
He will only become more of a permanent fixture in the national squad with the way he is playing under new boss Postecoglou too.
It was nothing but love from the travelling Spurs supporters though, who sang songs of praise for their new No10 as well as their manager.
Maddison could have had a couple of assists before the break when teeing up Richarlison, but the luckless Brazilian could not take either chance.
The first saw him cleverly nutmeg Lloyd Kelly and round the goalkeeper, but the ball was intercepted and then cleared away just as he was about to pull the trigger.
The ex-Everton man, who netted just one Premier League goal last term, then headed into the side netting from Maddison corner.
Postecoglou was then raging with Richarlison as he failed to control a pass from goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, and Bournemouth threatened a late leveller just before the break.
Vicario had to be at full stretch to repel Ryan Christie fizzer from distance.
Then, after Spurs had carelessly lost possession, Philip Billing – who now prefers to be called just Philip due to personal reasons – fired narrowly wide with the last kick of the half.
Spurs’ nervy spell continued for a short period after the interval too.
Antoine Semenyo curled a shot into the side netting.
While Richarlison suddenly could not string a pass together, and was struggling to control the ball too.
At one point he lost possession with no one around him, and then petulantly hacked down Illia Zabarnyi straight after, for which he was rightly booked.
Postecoglou had seen enough and hooked him on the hour.
But unlike last week against United, there was no angry reaction from the Brazilian on the subs’ bench.
Son pushed up top and within three minutes, it was 2-0.
The impressive Destiny Udogie set it up, playing a one-two with Son, before cutting back for Kulusevski to steer home.
Sub Ivan Perisic was perhaps lucky not to be sent off when shoving Max Aarons away in the face, but VAR looked at it and backed up ref Tim Robinson’s lenient on-field decision.
But Bournemouth, watched on by owner Bill Foley, could have no complaints about the result as the rain poured down and thunder and lightning even broke out.
It could have been more as Maddison drilled wide, before coming off to a chorus of boos from the home crowd and cheers from the travelling support.
The ex-Leicester man had said on telly before the game that “When Ange Postecoglou talks, you believe what he’s saying. It’s non-negotiable. You have to play his football”.
Maddison is playing the Aussie’s style to a T and causing opposing teams all kinds of problems, no matter what their fans shout at him.

But he managed just one goal and no assists in 2022-23, not featuring after February 18 with just one appearance on the bench in that time.
Coutinho made a name for himself at Inter Milan and signed for Liverpool in January 2013, shining at Anfield for five years before a massive £145m transfer to Barcelona.
It did not work out as planned at the Nou Camp, though, leading to a loan to Bayern before returning to England.
