Fuming Arteta rips into Arsenal flops after Fulham draw as he rages ‘over my dead body can you concede against ten men’

BOSS Mikel Arteta ripped into his Arsenal side for surrendering two vital points to ten-man Fulham. The Spaniard raged: “We have to show another level of commitment and desire. Over my dead body, against ten men, you cannot concede a goal.”

Gunners chief Arteta was fuming at Bukayo Saka’s early blunder which led to them conceding a first-minute goal for the THIRD time in their last nine home games.
And he was just as unhappy with Joao Palhinha’s 87th-minute equaliser after Calvin Bassey had been sent off for two yellow cards.
Arteta added: “It’s incredible we didn’t get three points after everything we created. We have to look at ourselves.
“We gave two goals away and we should have done so much more with all the opportunities we generated. We should have scored five, six, seven, I don’t know how many.

“We drew because we conceded two very poor goals and in this league when you give away goals like that you’re going to get punished.
“We made life really  difficult for ourselves with another mistake in the first minute to give them a goal and when you get back to 2-1 ahead you have to defend the box with your life.
“You cannot concede that equaliser against ten men after everything we’d done to win the game.”
Andreas Pereira cashed in on Saka’s error to embarrass keeper Aaron Ramsdale at his near post.

But England ace Saka levelled from the spot on 70 minutes.
Substitute Eddie Nketiah fired the Gunners in front less than two minutes later but Palhinha levelled soon after Bassey was dismissed.
Former Arsenal Invincible Martin Keown said: “Performances like this at home towards the end of last season are what stopped Arsenal going on to win the title.
“They have to learn from that.”
Arteta was quick to defend £65million Kai Havertz, who struggled before being substituted.
He said: “Today was tough for him but I’m sure he will win the fans over.”

Burnley 1 Aston Villa 3: Matty Cash scores unlikely double before Moussa Diaby strike to carry on brilliant season start

MATTY CASH’S first Aston Villa goals in over a year inspired Unai Emery’s side to a 3-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor.Cash came into the side as the only unenforced change from Villa’s 5-0 midweek Conference League win over Hibernian, and ensured there was no European hangover as he scored twice in the opening 20 minutes.

Lyle Foster gave Burnley hope with a powerful strike two minutes into the second half.
Only for Moussa Diaby to restore Villa’s two-goal advantage just after the hour as they ended a five-match winless league run on the road.
Burnley built their Championship title on the back of a 21-match unbeaten run at home, but have started life back in the Premier League with back-to-back defeats at Turf Moor.
Cash, playing in an advanced role on the right side of Villa’s midfield, needed only eight minutes to break the deadlock, sliding in to poke home Ollie Watkins’ cross.
It was the Poland international’s first goal since the final day of the 2021-22 season and the drama of Manchester City’s title-winning come-from-behind victory over Villa, but there would soon be another with Cash at the heart of a slick passing move.
Cutting in from the right to collect Watkins’ pass, Cash laid the ball off for Diaby on the right side of the box, then charged into the centre to lash home the resulting cross.
Burnley looked rusty after the postponement of last weekend’s trip to Luton left them with an enforced rest and were being overrun defensively as the chances kept coming.
Cash, brimming with confidence, tried a spectacular volley from Lucas Digne’s deep cross in the 35th minute, but Hannes Delcroix, making his Burnley debut after arriving in midweek from Anderlecht, got in a block to send it over the crossbar.

Cash again linked up with Diaby, whose deflected cross found Watkins, but Trafford was in the right place to deny him from point-blank range.
Burnley had done little to threaten the goal of Robin Olsen, making his first Premier League start since New Year’s Day with Emi Martinez sidelined by a calf strain, but things changed immediately at the start of the second half.
Johann Berg Gudmundsson, on as a substitute, headed a deep ball back into the box and Foster had the power to hold off Pau Torres, spinning to fire beyond Olsen.
Burnley were suddenly on top. Sander Berge sent in a cross begging for a touch, then Zeki Amdouni caused panic between Pau Torres and Olsen.
More confusion between Olsen and Boubacar Kamara allowed Berge to run into the box, winning a corner from which Olsen did well to deny Delcroix a debut goal.
Having coped with the pressure, Villa hit Burnley on the break just after the hour.
McGinn shrugged off a shirt pull from Ameen Al-Dakhil to play in Digne, who pulled the ball back for Diaby to find the bottom right corner – the goal surviving a VAR check for offside.
Watkins should have made it four in the 67th minute when he beat Delcroix to a low cross but Trafford again denied him from close range, holding smartly.
Nicolo Zaniolo replaced Diaby to make his Villa debut and almost scored with his first involvement, seeing his shot deflected wide, but the Italy international should have squared for the unmarked Watkins.
Cash, still fancying a hat-trick, shot narrowly wide with 10 minutes left while Zaniolo flashed a powerful effort just over.
Burnley substitute Jay Rodriguez twice threatened Olsen’s goal late on, but there was no way back for the hosts.

Sheff Utd 1 Man City 2: Rodri scores stunning late winner to rescue win for visitors after Kyle Walker blunder

SHEFFIELD born Kyle Walker broke the hearts of his hometown club as he went from City zero to hero in four incredible minutes.Anyone who doubted if the reigning triple crown winners had the hunger and desire to follow up on last year’s success and do the hard yards again this season found their answer here at Bramall Lane.

But Rodri fired in an even later winner for the visitorsCredit: Getty
Deprived of Pep Guardiola, following emergency back surgery, the champions’ own backs were up against the wall when sub Jayden Bogle rifled home an equaliser to cancel out Erling Haaland’s opener.
Cue Bramall Lane bedlam as Paul Heckingbottam’s players piled on top of one another and City’s players stared at the ground, wondering what the hell had just hit them.
But the most broken individual of all was Walker, the boyhood Blades’ fan, whose gut instinct told him he had probably just gifted Sheff U a share of the points.
It was the England star’s ill-advised back heel in his own box, trying to save a corner, which was pounced on by tireless striker Benie Traore, who recycled possession.
His cross cannoned off Ben Hamer’s heel and landed at Bogle who rifled a shot into the far corner past a helpless Ederson.
As the Kop end erupted, Walker sank to his knees and cursed his own stupidity.
But champions are made for moments like this and three minutes later Walker was leading the charge of celebrating City players after he clawed them back for an epic win.
Once again the ball was heading out of play when Walker gave chase and saved a seemingly lost cause.

He cut the ball back for Foden whose touch set up Rodri and the midfielder, so wasteful for the previous 87 minutes, finally found his range to lash the ball beyond Wes Foderingham for a crushing winner.
That striker, at the end of a game in which they dominated but failed to nail, left City as the only side with a 100 per cent record of three wins out of three – on top and out on their own again.
But this was one hell of a struggle and one they will look back on as a massive moment if they become the first side to win four consecutive Premier League titles.

Erling Haaland only managed ten touches despite his side’s dominance in a one-sided first half.
One of those was a penalty kick which he managed to hit the post with – City’s third miss in their last five spot kicks.
However, the Norwegian made amends just after the hour when he finally made the breakthrough to atone for his earlier howler.
Jack Grealish finally managed to beat his shadow George Baldock and made a rare burst to the byline before clipping in a floating cross.
And there was Haaland, leaping between Jack Robinson and Yasser Larouci to power home his header from three yards out.
It was a dose of pain relief for City fans, never mind Guardiola who must have been squirming long before then as his players made heavy weather of life without him.

Mo Salah ‘tells Liverpool he wants Al-Ittihad transfer’ as deadline for Reds to accept £79million bid is revealed

MOHAMED SALAH has informed Liverpool that he wants to join Al-Ittihad, according to reports. The winger received a huge David Beckham-like offer to join the Saudi Pro League side earlier this week.
Salah has told Liverpool he wants to join Al-IttihadCredit: PA
Al-Ittihad tabled a five-year deal worth around £100million-a-season along with a private jet or unlimited plane tickets for his family and the chance to become an an ambassador for tourism and investments in Saudi Arabia.
There have also been discussions surrounding the possibility of Salah acquiring shares of a team in future – similar to the terms that saw Beckham move to the MLS in 2007.
The offer appears to have tempted Salah into joining the Saudi Pro League side as transfer journalist Rudi Galetti claims the 31-year-old winger has informed Liverpool he wants to leave.
However, the final decision will be down to club officials and Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds are said to have an offer of more than £79m for their star player and the deadline for the deal is thought to be TOMORROW.
Salah has scored 187 goals and provided 80 assists for Liverpool since joining the club in 2017.

He also helped the club to a Champions League title and a Premier League title in 2019 and 2020 respectively.
Should they decide to sell him, Liverpool will have just a matter of days to recruit a replacement before the transfer window closes.

Ex-Premier League star so unrecognisable without flowing hair and bushy beard even his own son didn’t know who he was

THIS former Premier League star looks so different these days even his own son didn’t recognise him.The ex-defender spent most of his career on the books with Aston Villa, making 79 appearances in the top flight.

However, he was forced to retire early under doctors’ advice in 2022 following a nasty head injury.
And as he started a completely new career as a mortgage and investment advisor, it inadvertently coincided with a completely new look.
The flowing locks were cropped for a shorter style and the beard trimmed back in a heartwarming selfie with his wife Catherine.
But for Nathan Baker, his son Jax was utterly perplexed and bamboozled.

Baker, 32, told SunSport: “I’ve cut my hair now actually so some people might not recognise me.
“It was quite funny because my two-year-old son didn’t recognise me when I picked him up from nursery.

“It was quite embarrassing actually, he was looking at me but didn’t recognise me.
“I had to start speaking so he recognised my voice but then it took him a couple of minutes to come around and he had a stern look on his face.

“It’s a bit weird, I’ve cut my hair and I’ve started this new career. It wasn’t planned it just happened I had had enough of that hairstyle so I’ve gone a lot shorter now.”
Baker scored five goals in 294 senior club appearances for Villa, Bristol City and on loan at Lincoln and Millwall.
But the early retirement and young family prompted him to look at a career change.
He had built up a property portfolio during his playing days and passed his CeMAP exams at the first attempt to kickstart his venture into the world of finance.
Baker told SunSport: “I’ve always been interested in property and I’ve been able to build my own portfolio alongside football. So this career change is perfect for me and goes hand in hand.
“I studied hard in the lead-up to my exam as there was a lot to learn, especially the terminology and legislation, but thankfully I passed first time.
“I’m ready to start taking on my own clients. I’m loving it.
“As long as I’m still enjoying it and helping people, I’ll carry on. This is just the start of my new career path as the idea would be to become a financial advisor where I can cover pensions, investments, mortgages and insurance.”

Klopp’s genius switch makes Liverpool much more dangerous but leaves a hole if Newcastle are fast enough to exploit it

ARE Newcastle United or Liverpool good this season? We are only two games into the 23/24 Premier League season but the early signs are positive for each of these two teams.
Jurgen Klopp’s tactical tweak has proven effective for LiverpoolCredit: Rex
But Eddie Howe has Newcastle well-drilledCredit: Getty
Newcastle have continued to strengthen their squad with sensible additions, including Italian international Sandro Tonali from AC Milan, and they are well-coached and strong from a tactical point of view.
They will also come into this game with the formidable home support of St. James Park behind them.
Liverpool, on the other hand, have endured a more difficult summer with important players leaving the club.
They are still, however, more than capable of providing a dangerous opponent to any team in the Premier League.

Newcastle will be difficult to break down
Sven Botman and Fabian Schar proved too tough to handle for Erling HaalandCredit: ALAMY
The evolution of Newcastle since their takeover by the PIF and their emergence as the most wealthy club in European football has been extremely interesting.
It would have been easy for new owners to have insisted on the signing of players to supplement the attack in order to bring an attacking spark to the club.

Instead, with the notable exception of Swedish international Alexander Isak, we have seen the club support their coach Eddie Howe in building the team from the back.
Last season Newcastle finished 4th in the Premier League as they qualified for the Champions League.

Newcastle’s compact defensive block is tough to get through
So far this season, with a dominant win over Aston Villa and a close loss to Manchester City, we have seen the defensive solidity of Newcastle continuing.
In the above example from the match against City, we can see the organisation of Newcastle’s defensive block back in their own half.
Howe would have known the opposition would dominate possession, and consequently, we saw Newcastle allow them to have possession in the back line as they remained in a tight block ahead of the ball.
Liverpool have returned to using rotations and movements in the attacking phase to draw and drag defensive players out of position and to create space in the opposition half, meaning the Toon defence will be tested to the max.
Newcastle deploy a strong low block
Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz have all looked good, particularly in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth when making movements deep and towards the ball or long and away from the ball to create and use space.
While Newcastle are effective in a deeper block they will still need to work hard in order to maintain their shape and discipline as Liverpool’s front three rotate.
Newcastle’s proficiency in the defensive phase has also seen them impress in terms of their work rate and pressing as their opposition look to build their attack from deep.
Newcastle’s pressing unit is coherent against even the best teams
Here, as City are building from deep we see Newcastle initially look to move high to engage the ball and prevent City from playing through easily.
They are aggressive in terms of going man-to-man and looking to prevent the ball from reaching the halfway line.
Towards the end of last season and into this season we saw Liverpool adopt a box midfield in an effort to get Trent Alexander-Arnold, who moves from right-back into the midfield, onto the ball in the build-up phase.
Newcastle will need to make sure that they are able to put pressure on Liverpool as they possess the ball at the base of the midfield or the away side will find routes to play through and into the final third.
How effective will Liverpool be in build-up?
Virgil van Dijk’s passing out the back will be key in playing through Newcastle’s pressCredit: Alamy
The question of how best to use the strengths of Alexander-Arnold have been asked ever since the 24-year-old England international broke through at senior level.
His ability in the right half-space for Liverpool was notable, as was his ability to whip crosses towards the back post from the corner of the opposition area he provided danger.
Now, Klopp is looking to get Alexander-Arnold in possession of the ball more centrally and in deeper areas where he can use his passing range and vision to create strong attacking opportunities for Liverpool.
When Liverpool are in possession of the ball we see Alexander-Arnold move inside to the base of the midfield in an effort to get on the ball in dangerous areas.
Liverpool’s ability to build-up from the back will be pivotal
With Alisson in goal Liverpool have a goalkeeper who is comfortable in possession.
As such Alexander-Arnold is able to rotate into the midfield with Virgil Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Andy Robertson staying deeper to ensure they can move the ball out from the first line safely.
Newcastle will have to find a way to put adequate pressure on the ball when Alexander-Arnold has possession of the ball due to his ability to break lines or switch the play with accuracy.
Newcastle need to use their wide player on the left to come in and continue to put pressure on the ball centrally.
With the likes of Salah and Jota showing intelligent movement from the attacking line as they drop deep and come inside there is a danger in leaving Alexander-Arnold with time and space on the ball.
Trent Alexander-Arnold is being allowed to drift infield
The midfielders pushing wide allows Alexander-Arnold to push through the middle
Here, we see the movements from Liverpool as they use their more advanced central midfielders, Dominik Szoboszlai in this case, to rotate outside into the spaces that Alexander-Arnold has left when moving inside.
This allows Liverpool to move the ball wide and as they do Alexander-Arnold will move higher to get on the ball in advanced areas.
These movements of the Liverpool players in possession are designed to allow the man in possession of the ball to always have an option to progress the ball into advanced areas.
With Alexander-Arnold becoming more of a hybrid player in terms of his positioning and movement we have seen Liverpool become a far more difficult team to defend against.
    Liverpool’s new fluid front three
Liverpool’s front three is very fluidCredit: Alamy
The lack of options in the midfield for Liverpool so far this season has seen Klopp move Cody Gakpo into the midfield area as opposed to playing him as the central striker.
This has seen Portuguese international Jota used in a more central role up front with Salah to the right and Diaz to the left.
The movement and fluidity of this front three so far has been extremely effective for Liverpool in terms of creating chances and finding space.
While Jota will drop deep towards the ball Salah and Diaz come inside either into the half-spaces or the central areas to fill the spaces that have been left by the movement of the central striker.
These rotations and movements are similar to those of the famous front three of Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane when Liverpool were last a truly dominant side.
Liverpool’s front three will pose a number of questions to the Newcastle defence
This time the rotation sees Jota making a move from a deeper area, inside the opposition half, to a higher line.
As he does we see Salah and Diaz making movements into the space that he has created.
Liverpool are narrow in their attacking shape in this example.
Meanwhile Howe’s Newcastle are very solid from a defensive point of view they tend to be structured and rigid in their defensive shape.
This means that they are likely to find it difficult to cope with the movements and positioning of the Liverpool forwards and midfielders as they move into advanced spaces.
This could be solved by moving into a more man-marking defensive structure, as we saw earlier when Newcastle pressed high and put pressure on the opposition man-to-man, but this would be a risk as it would create space for Liverpool to attack.
Mohamed Salah and Co frequently drop into midfield
The rotations of the front three are important to how Liverpool play
Once again here we see that Szoboszlai has moved outside to the wide area to create space inside.
As he does so, with Alexander-Arnold in the midfield and Salah dropping deep, we see Liverpool finding a way to break through the opposition block with a line-breaking pass from Alexander-Arnold into the feet of Salah.
In this match, if Newcastle sit too deep and allow Liverpool to have possession of the ball in dangerous central areas then the home side are likely to have a long 90 minutes.
Liverpool’s intelligent rotations and ability to find creative passing angles make it difficult for teams who want to stay structured and organised as they defend.
    What does this mean?
While it is likely that Liverpool will, for the most part, dominate the ball in this game they will not have things all their own way against Newcastle.
The home side are difficult to break down and in Isak they have a genuine threat in the striker position who is capable of moving his team forward when they transition from defence to attack.

The test for Liverpool will be whether they can turn their possession into meaningful entries into the final third and the Newcastle penalty area.

Szoboszlai starred in the Bundesliga, scoring 20 goals and 22 assists in 91 matches as he helped the club win two domestic cups and qualify for the Champions League twice.

Ten Hag ripped into his players on Friday for not “doing their jobs” in their lacklustre defeat at Tottenham last weekend.
