Money in football has reached an astronomical level as we have seen three players go for over £100million this summer alone.
But just because players used to go for peanuts in comparison doesn’t mean they weren’t “expensive” in their day.
Sky News have adjusted Premier League players’ transfer fees over the years with the transfer market’s inflation rate to estimate what those players value really was at the time.
The updated information has allowed for a new-look “Most Expensive XI of All-Time” with unexpected names thrown into the mix.

Chelsea and Ukraine star Andriy Shevchenko leads the line as the most expensive Premier League player of all time.
His £30.8million move from AC Milan back in 2006 is estimated be worth an eye-watering £215.6million in today’s market.
Rio Ferdinand slots in at the back as the most expensive Premier League defender of all time and second most expensive player.
When he swapped Leeds United for Manchester United back in 2002 his £29million move was in today’s terms a £198.7million deal.

The entire team is made up of Chelsea and Manchester United players with a combined worth of £1.64billion.
Graham Le Saux, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Sebastian Veron are amongst some of the shock names who would be worth a fortune in the current market.
More recent players such as Paul Pogba, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Angel Di Maria all make it in alongside the legends from years past.
None of this summer’s big money signings such as Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo would make it anywhere near the starting lineup.
In fact £115million man Caicedo isn’t even in the top 30 players on the list.

New Chelsea star Petrovic takes club legend’s shirt number after Premier League rule BLOCKED his dream choice

NEW Chelsea signing Djordje Petrovic will wear the number 28 made iconic by club legend Cesar Azpilicueta after his first choice was denied. The Blues signed Robert Sanchez for £25million from Brighton earlier in the window after letting Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga go.
Djordje Petrovic will wear the number 28 made iconic by club legend Cesar Azpilicueta
And in need of a back up to Sanchez, Chelsea confirmed a deal for Serbian stopper Petrovic.
He has signed a seven-year deal and takes the No28 left behind by former captain Azpilicueta.
But that was only after the Premier League denied him the chance of wearing the No99 he had at New England Revolution in the MLS.
Petrovic said: “I’m very happy to wear number 28 and I know it means a lot at this club.

“I asked for number 99 originally but I was told it was too high for the Premier League.
“I saw what was available after that and I liked the look of the No.28 jersey.”
Renato Sanches suffered a similar fate in 2017 when he signed on loan for Swansea from Bayern Munich.
His request to wear No85 was rejected, meaning he took No35 instead.

After signing, he said: “It’s so nice here! Everything here is set up to win, to learn and to achieve great things at the very top level.
“I’m so happy to be at Chelsea and I’m really excited to get started at this club.
“It’s a big step for me and it’s always been a dream of mine to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the world and today I have achieved that goal. I’m so happy!
“Playing in the Premier League is something I’m really looking forward to doing and I hope to learn many things here at Chelsea. I can’t wait to meet everyone and play at Stamford Bridge.”

Forgotten wonderkid dubbed ‘Messi’s heir’ who Chelsea and Man City fought over at 13 signs for League One club

A FORGOTTEN wonderkid who was once dubbed “Messi’s heir” has signed for League One side Blackpool.Karamoko Dembele, 20, was the talk of football when he was coming through the ranks at Celtic and made his debut for the club’s under-20s side when he was just THIRTEEN.

He would go on to make his full first team debut at Celtic Park when he was still only 16 years old.
The winger also had both Scotland and England fighting to have him declare for them and he represented both sides at youth level – although he has not declared for either country yet.
And Chelsea and Manchester City were also scrapping for his signature after he burst on the scene.
The winger, who was born in London, joined Celtic when he was just 10 years old and regularly scooped up awards at both academy and youth team level – with the expectation that he would go on to become a first team regular at Celtic Park.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
His former youth team coach David Feeney said in 2016: “I think he is very similar to Lionel Messi. If he has the right guidance, then the sky is the limit for him.
However, after making his debut for the club in the 2018-19 season, the 5ft5 winger never really managed to kick on at senior level – with injuries being a major factor.
He would go on to make just eight further appearances for The Hoops, all of them cameos from the bench before joining Ligue 1 side Brest in 2022.
Dembele made 17 appearances in his first season at the club, again largely being cameos from the bench.

But last season he featured just once in all competitions for the club.
A move to Blackpool represents an opportunity for the youngster to revive his career.
Still only 20, a move down the football pyramid from Ligue 1 to English football’s League One will give him the opportunity to gain the minutes he desperately needs to develop.
After the club unveiled his signing on Twitter, it is fair to say that Blackpool fans still believe he can come good on his potential.
One fan said: “If he’s as good as he was on my Football Manager we are winning the league ladies and gents.”
Another added: “Promising young player, shame it’s a loan but should definitely add something if played in the correct position. Let’s hope this leads to a change in formation. Good luck to the lad.”
While a third wrote: “Let us hope this is the maverick type player we badly need.” More

“There could have been serious injuries or even fatalities. For this reason we are taking this incident extremely seriously.
“We have now released CCTV footage from the coach and are asking anybody who recognises the two men on the left to get in touch.
“We appreciate the footage of them is quite grainy, but one is wearing distinctive clothing and this may help somebody recognise them.
“The area was busy when incident occurred, with bank holiday traffic and people leaving the area following the football match between Burnley and Aston Villa, and we believe there will be people out there who have not yet spoken to us, who either saw who was responsible or has dashcam showing the men more clearly.

Rodon had a temporary spell away from North London last term at Ligue 1 club Rennes and then joined Daniel Farke’s side on a season-long loan.
Rodon said: “At Swansea I did have close relationships with the manager, but when I went to Spurs it was more on your own. I learnt a lot in that period being at Spurs.
“Coming to Leeds, the manager’s been brilliant with me since I’ve walked through the door.
“It’s just nice to have that kind of relationship again, to feel like you’re part of it and you’re wanted.”

Rodon was signed by Jose Mourinho for £11million but failed to win a place under him, Nuno Espirito Santo or Antonio Conte.
He was also overlooked by new Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou — but reckons he has matured despite his limited action.
Rodon added: “At Tottenham, I learned to become a man in that environment and just handle being on my own, maturing and developing.
“But coming to Leeds and having that relationship already and feeling wanted and in the group, it means a lot more to me.”

Rodon, named in the Wales squad today for the friendly against South Korea and Euro 2024 qualifier in Latvia next month, has joined fellow Welshmen Ethan Ampadu and Dan James at Elland Road.
He added: “DJ was excited, he was really excited when the news came out.
“DJ being here for quite a few seasons, just having a chat with him and of course very high regard and respect for everything with the club.
“When it came to me and with Ethan also signing here this summer, it was kind of a no-brainer for me.”
Rodon was joined in Robert Page’s squad named in Bala this morning by Luton’s Tom Lockyer.
Hatters captain Lockyer collapsed in last season;s Championship play-off final following a heart scare and required surgery to correct an atrial fibrillation.
Lockyer has made a full recovery and led Luton in their opening two Premier League matches against Brighton and Chelsea.
Page said: “It’s a great story. We all watched the events unfold in the play off final. We were all concerned, but there has been nothing but positivity since that day.
“He has had some great news, he is back to normal and is now playing in the Premier League, which is unbelievable for him as well.
“It is always going to be a challenge when you get promoted to the Premier League, Luton have done really well to be where they are at with the resources they have available to them.
“But for him personally he should be very proud of how he has recovered after it. A dream for him was to play in the Premier League and he has achieved that.”
Leeds winger James has been ruled out due to an abductor problem.
Page added: “It’s probably about a three-week injury so we could push and push him, but we would not have had him at his best.
“And it would be like pushing him to the day before the Latvia game.

“I don’t think Leeds would want that and we need people on the grass fit and ready to go because it is obviously an important game for us.
“We have seen the scan results and it was an easy decision for us in the end to leave him out.” More

Three Premier League sides in last ditch transfer race to sign £30m-rated PSG star Hugo Ekitike days before deadline

CRYSTAL PALACE, West Ham and Brentford are all trying to agree a deadline day loan for Paris St.Germain striker Hugo Ekitike. But negotiations have been complicated by the 21-year-old French youth international already being offered by PSG to Eintracht Frankfurt.

Ekitike, who cost PSG £30million when they bought him from Reims, has been told he does not figure in the plans of new coach Luis Enrique.
And the French Champions have tried to include him as part of a £55million bid for Frankfurt’s French international Randal Kolo Mauni.
That offer has been rejected by the Bundesliga club but Kolo Mauni has now reportedly gone on strike and flown to Paris in an effort to force a deal.
And that uncertainty has left Ekitike’s future up in the air as he waits to find out what is going on.

But it seems likely that he will be moving somewhere before tomorrow’s transfer deadline and the trio of London teams are all on standby to strike a last minute deal.
Ekitike initially joined PSG on loan from Reims but only scored four goals in his first season at the Parc des Princes.
But they had agreed an obligation to buy him this summer for £30million and are already looking to offload him.
The French striker has scored four goals in 33 appearances for the club.

How Man Utd could line up for huge Arsenal clash with three transfer deadline day signings including Chelsea flop

MANCHESTER UNITED face injury dilemma heading into their next match – which could force them into a late summer spree. United travel to Arsenal on Sunday but do so with key names ruled out from the starting 11.

Centre-back Raphael Varane is the latest defender to be sidelined, joining Luke Shaw.
As a result, United are linked with a move for Nice centre-half Jean-Clair Todibo, formerly of Barcelona.
If a deal cannot be struck in time, Victor Lindelof is expected to partner Lisandro Martinez with Harry Maguire out of favour.
But more pressing for manager Erik ten Hag is the injuries to left-backs Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

So United are frantically searching for an emergency replacement.
The club have approached Chelsea over a loan move for Marc Cucurella, who only arrived in West London last season for £63million.
With two new faces lined up in defence, Ten Hag is also in the market for a new midfielder due to Mason Mount’s recent knock.
It has led the Dutchman to enquire about a move for Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who he worked with at Bayern Munich.

Going forward, United will likely keep Bruno Fernandes in the No10 role with Marcus Rashford and Antony either side of him.
Anthony Martial is in line to lead the line but summer signing Rasmus Hojlund could feature in some capacity following a back injury.
