I was asked to leave Aston Villa because I was too good… my manager promised to give Sir Alex Ferguson a call

STEPHEN IRELAND has revealed that his manager claimed he was too good for Aston Villa and believed he should leave. The former Premier League star claims his then boss Alex McLeish promised to phone his compatriot and Manchester United gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson to recommend he signs him.

Ireland begun his career with Manchester City, spending five years at the club before moving to Aston Villa.
Gerard Houllier was manager at the time and did not want to bring the attacking midfielder to the club.
He therefore refused to play him and publicly demanded that he needs to work harder.
Houllier left in the summer of 2011 and was replaced by McLeish, which led to the now retired 37-year-old enjoying a new lease of life.

Ireland told the story Ladbrokes Fanzone, saying: “In comes McLeish and I had a really good pre-season.
“At which point the manager told me I should probably look at moving on, because of my style of play.
“His exact words were ‘you’re too good to be here.
“‘You’re playing balls around the corner, doing things first time, that the lads just aren’t on the same wavelength as you. You’re going to jeopardise the team losing the ball.’

“I swear to God, this is how he finished the chat. He says ‘I’m going to give Sir Alex a call for you.’
“That’s what he said to me. I didn’t really know what to do with that information, to be honest.”
Ireland never moved to Man Utd and ended up staying at Villa for the 2011/12 campaign.
He ended up winning the supporters’ player of the season award as the club narrowly avoided relegation by two points.
Ireland spent another season at Aston Villa before moving to Stoke for five years and then retiring at Bolton in 2018.
He also opened up to Ladbrokes about his bizarre loan spell at Newcastle in 2011.
Ireland played just twice and has claimed that the deal agreed with Villa included a bizarre clause that restricted him to just four appearances for the Toon.
Each time he featured it would cost the club an extra £50,000.
Manager Alan Pardew chose not to play him more than twice after Newcastle had secured wins to push them away from the relegation zone in order to save the club money. More

However, club legend Parlour remembers it as the day he and his teammates almost “had it”.
Spurs fans created a hostile atmosphere for their North London rivals three months after star defender Sol Campbell swapped White Hart Lane for Highbury.
And it resulted in a frightening post-match coach journey for Arsene Wenger’s side.
In an interview for the official Arsenal programme, Parlour said: “I remember the first time we went back to White Hart Lane after he [Campbell] signed in 2001.

“We were on the coach with the police and they told the driver not to stop, just keep going, and they would stop the traffic.
“I said to Arsene Wenger, ‘Why don’t I put a sign on the window saying ‘Sol sits here’ so at least they don’t get any of us by mistake!’
“But anyway, we hammered it around the corner and we heard a massive crash.
“It scared the life out of us, we thought a window had gone in, but it was all the plates coming out of the cupboard at the back of the bus.

Richards, 35, is a far more jovial character, often seen laughing uncontrollably at one his Irish counterpart’s opinions.
And the ex-Manchester City defender was seen backing Keane up on Sunday after a fan allegedly headbutted the Treble winner.
Footage shows shows Richards stepping in and pinning the man against the wall moments after the alleged assault.
And their desire to stand up for one another clearly stems from a place of respect.

The pair have spoken glowingly about one another in the past.
Speaking last year, Richards hailed Keane’s charisma as he named him as his favourite pundit.
He said: “Say you’re at home this Sunday. You’ve had your delicious Sunday dinner.
“You turn on the telly, switch on Super Sunday. Who do you want to see?

“If Keano is on, you know it’s going to be entertaining. His brutal honesty is brilliant.
“Before we got to know each other, Chris, I used to think you were just some wind-up merchant!
“Now I work with you, you’re only half-bad, because I know you just say it like it is.
“But in terms of entertainment value, it’s Roy Keane, all day, everyday.”
    And it’s not just a one-way street.
Keane playfully joked about his double act with Richards on social media two years ago.
It came after he shared a picture of him chatting with Arsenal legend Ian Wright.
And Keane added the caption: “With my mate Wrighty watching the football. Don’t be jealous Micah.”
The pair are regularly seen on screen passionately debating the biggest issues in football.
Even on Sunday, the two pundits got into a big disagreement over Arsenal’s goalkeeping situation.
And it was hilariously diffused by Theo Walcott – who found it amusing that he was caught in the middle.
But the pair have maintained their brilliant relationship throughout – with Richards speaking about his huge admiration for Keane last year.
He told The Athletic: “But Roy is everything I didn’t expect him to be. It’s hard to explain without going over the top, but there’s this perception that he’s an angry, old… but he’s the nicest, most considerate guy.
“And on the other hand, I think I’ve helped bring out a side of him that a lot of people wouldn’t see. And I take great pride in that.
