Man Utd 1 Brighton 3: Ten Hag’s horror week gets worse with disastrous home defeat after Hojlund is denied debut goal

DANNY WELBECK came back to haunt his old club and pile more misery on Erik ten Hag. The former Manchester United striker kept his cool in front of the Stretford End to put Brighton in front on 20 minutes.

Pascal Gross outwitted Lisandro Martinez with a nifty dummy before blasting low into the back of the net past Andre Onana to make it 2-0 eight minutes after half-time.
And Joao Pedro side-footed emphatically into the far corner to make it three on 71 minutes.
Hannibal Mejbri blasted a wonderful strike in just two minutes later to give United a glimmer of hope.
Ansu Fati almost added a fourth for the visitors in injury time but was denied by a superb diving save by Onana.

Newcastle 1 Brentford 0: Howe’s blushes spared by Flekken howler as Wilson penalty wins the points for lacklustre Toon

EDDIE HOWE was spared more flak by flaky Brentford keeper Mark Flekken. Newcastle CEO Darren Eales admitted before the season that he had to calm the Saudi chiefs down after a draw with Crystal Palace in January.

Wilson slotted home the only goal on 64 minutesCredit: Getty
That point extended the Magpies unbeaten run to 15, so you started to wonder how they would react if this ended in a loss or turgid stalemate on the back of three straight defeats.
And at no point did Newcastle look like winning this one until the dodgy Dutch stopper – a summer signing from Freiburg – handed the Tynesiders a lifeline on a platter by needlessly taking Anthony Gordon out on the byline for a penalty just after the hour.
Callum Wilson buried it, making it 14 goals in his last 17 Prem games and taking him level with Les Ferdinand’s Toon total.
This was about the win but the Tynesiders were once again well off it.
Famed for their intensity under Howe, it is sorely lacking right now.
Despite that, three points stops their mini-crisis reaching boiling point as they head to face AC Milan on Tuesday for their Champions League return following a 20-year absence.
Now up to 11th in the Prem, and with Sheffield United next, this could prove a huge turning point – even if it was another performance to concern Howe.
He made five changes to try and kickstart the season, with Harvey Barnes handed a first start and Wilson, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson and Sean Longstaff also in.

This already had a must-win feel to it the Mags manager wanted to avoid heading to Milan with further questions over his future.
Yet they could and perhaps should have been behind inside three minutes when Aaron Hickey – finding a ridiculous amount of space inside the box – was denied by Nick Pope from a tight angle.
But that warning shot hardly sparked Newcastle into life with Brentford the far better side early on.
The hosts were lethargic off the ball, sloppy on it and their left side was under constant bombardment.
Expecting to see their side come out firing, the crowd were not impressed.
Yoane Wissa was a whisker away from converting Mathias Jensen’s wicked cross 23 minutes in.
The Geordies finally had a shot five minutes later, and from the resulting corner Bruno Guimaraes’ header from point-blank range at the back post was just about kept out by Mark Flekken.
The first-half was instantly forgettable and Newcastle needed inspiration, yet they started the second just as slack.
Wilson then bundled the ball in following a goalmouth scramble after the unconvincing Flekken fluffed a punched clearance, but Craig Pawson immediately gave a foul.
Wissa squandered another half-chance at the other end seconds later yet, shooting towards the Gallowgate, it was Newcastle pressing – and they were handed a penalty just after the hour for Flekken’s foul on Gordon.
Deadly Wilson made no mistake – taking his season’s tally to three – firing over the outstretched Flekken to the mighty relief of St James’.
It was far from over though but just as Brentford threatened to get back in, ref Craig Pawson pointed to the spot again for a Bryan Mbeumo handball – only to reverse his decision after looking at the monitor.
There were nine minutes of injury time but Newcastle held on without any major frights for a priceless victory.

Italy wonderkid Udogie is hitting right notes at Tottenham after flying start – and Azzurri call-up may not be far away

DESTINY UDOGIE was born in Verona, the setting from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet – and it is fair to say the Spurs fans have fallen in love with the left-back already. The Italian, 20, born to Nigerian parents was actually signed last summer from Udinese for £15million.

But with Antonio Conte already having Ivan Perisic and Ryan Sessegnon on the left, it was thought best that the whizkid return to the club that sold him for a season-long loan.
Now he is flourishing in the Premier League but not in the position the club originally signed him for at wing-back under Conte, but as an inverted full-back in Ange Postecoglou’s attack-minded, 4-3-3 system.
Supporters have been hugely impressed with rapid Udogie’s composure and talent on the ball, becoming an auxiliary midfielder at times, as well as his defensive discipline.
Udogie has been a revelation so far this season
He has already grabbed two assists in the top flight and at such a tender age, his potential is huge.

Yet with the focus primarily on new boss Postecoglou, plus James Maddison and Yves Bissouma stealing the limelight, Udogie’s quick impact may have gone under the radar for fans outside the club.
The defender’s last name is pronounced ‘ooh-doggy’ and his Nigerian first name of Iyenoma translates to ‘Good News’.
His dad Franklin has been a driving force in his career, never missing a home game of his son’s back in Italy even on a Sunday when Udogie Snr would attend church.
But it was actually his mum Kate who first encouraged his passion for the game after noticing, as Udogie himself told SunSport in Perth this July, that “when I was a baby, I was kicking everything I saw around the house”.
    Most read in Football
Then when Kate was taking older brother Uwa to football practice, she convinced the coach to allow a tearful Destiny to play too.
Kate told Gianlucadimarzio.com: “Destiny couldn’t stop crying. He wanted to be with Uwa. So I asked the coach to let them train together. He was four years old, Uwa was five. That’s how it all started.”
Destiny quickly impressed while at local side Nogara, with one on-looker from affiliated club Atalanta, not believing the youngster was actually six by the way he played and, according to Franklin, wanted to check his documents just to be sure!
Nonetheless, it was a case of try, try, try again for Udogie when it came to joining hometown side Hellas Verona, who rejected him twice after trials.
Allegedly, it was only thanks to the father of an older team-mate who played in Destiny’s brother’s team alerting the Hellas to the future Spurs star’s talents that he finally joined the Venetian side.
Udogie played up the ranks with Verona before a move to Udinese in 2021, initially on loan and then permanently.
His fantastic season with the Bianconeri, netting five Serie A goals, alerted Spurs and Inter Milan but it was the former who won his signature.

Back he went to Udinese for the campaign where he did not quite hit the same heights, performing brilliantly against the big sides like AC Milan and Napoli but less well against the lesser sides, as the team won between October and March.
There was also an incident with a car accident where Udogie lost control of his Mercedes around 3am and crashed into the front of a bar, destroying 12 chairs, three tables, two umbrellas, five large plant-holders and about ten plants.
The owner described the damage as if “a bomb went off”. Udogie apologised and was fined.

Udogie, who idolised Real Madrid legend Marcelo as a kid, has certainly put any dip in form from last term well and truly behind him at Spurs, where he has hit the ground running.
He has fit in extremely well into Postecoglou’s team – and the same can be said off the pitch.
Udogie is particularly close to fellow Italian and new signing Guglielmo Vicario, who has described the left-back as like his “little brother”.
But the huge tennis and basketball fan also gets on with pretty much everyone in the squad, helped by his laid-back character who appears unfazed by anything.
That latter attribute has certainly helped him put in some mature displays in the few games he has played so far, as has the fact that he will have had 80 senior games under his belt when he starts at home to Sheffield United on Saturday.

Postecoglou certainly seems to trust him already – the Aussie is a big believer in if you are good enough, you are old enough – and has been pleased with Udogie’s punctuality.
The Spurs boss said: “He’s been great.
“I think with Destiny, Micky (Van de Ven) and Pape Sarr, these 20-year-olds, 21-year-olds, and say to them look, ‘You’re not going to be judged on your performances in these early games, not by me, so just go out there and play’.
“I think they’ve embraced that. They’ve enjoyed that freedom and belief that there was nothing that was going to happen out there that was going to say to me that they’re never going to be a player for this football club, because I was putting them out there.
“But for them it’s not easy, just putting them out there in the Premier League. It wasn’t just one I was putting in, it was three or four.
“We spoke about it as a coaching staff, for that first team selection, it could have been easier to go safer. Absolutely.
“But we needed to change and we needed to challenge things. Guys like Destiny and Micky and these players who have not just gone in there and found their feet, they’ve gone in there and tried to smash it. That’s what I want.”
Yet there is still some surprise within the club at just how well Udogie has taken to the Premier League, given most foreign signings, particularly young ones, need time to settle.
His hot form is expected to drop off a bit, as most youngsters fluctuate with their performances.

But with the way he is going, it seems a first call-up to Italy’s senior side will not be far away.
Indeed, reports from his homeland suggest Azzurri chief Luciano Spalletti sees Udogie as one of a handful of starlets he may bring into the fold next month. More

His Fulham exit brought Mitrovic’s eight-year spell in England to an end.
Prior to the move, he reportedly told friends he would never play for the Cottagers again after they rejected a bid from Al-Hilal.
Mitrovic, who is said to be on more than £400,000-a-week now, would go on to come off the bench on the opening weekend of the new season in what was his final Fulham appearance.
However, he has now taken a sly dig at his former clubs after signing for the four-time Asian Champions League winners.

Speaking to Gazzetta Dello Sport, he explained: “When I received the offer from Al-Hilal, I talked about it with my family, giving up was impossible.
“I have no nostalgia for England, I played many years there.
“I’m happy to have finally arrived at a top club, Al-Hilal is a bit like Real Madrid in Europe.”
Mitrovic first arrived in England in 2015, signing for Newcastle before joining Fulham three years later.

He won promotion to the Premier League with both clubs and twice finished as the Championship’s top scorer during his time at Fulham.

Man Utd fans spot Ten Hag make major tactical tweak as he brings forgotten star back into the fold vs Brighton

United experimented with a diamond in midfield
But Ten Hag moved things around on Saturday as he sought a change-up in the middle of the park.
It came in the form of a diamond midfield with Scott McTominay brought back into the fold.
The Scot, 26, had played just seven minutes in Man Utd’s opening four league games.
But he made the XI alongside Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and Christian Eriksen against Brighton as Ten Hag switched to a 4-4-2 diamond.

Casemiro sat at the base of the midfield, with McTominay on the right and Eriksen to the left.
Fernandes then occupied the No10 space behind a strike partnership of Marcus Rashford and Rasmus Hojlund.
Reacting to the formation, which came with new signing Sofyan Amrabat ruled out injured, one Man Utd supporter said: “Really intrigued by this use of formation. United significantly more compacted.
“Midfield seemingly more under control and still able to maximise attack threat, with the trio up front. It seems a productive move to address several positional weaknesses.”

Another added: “There’s actually a lot of potential in that midfield three if Eriksen and McTominay are given license to rotate getting forward between them.
“There’s a place for Scott in this team if we can find him a role like Scotland have.”
While a third replied: “I missed Man Utd playing a diamond 4-4-2.”
McTominay has shown himself to be capable of scoring goals for Scotland, netting six times in five Euro 2024 qualifiers.
But he netted just three times in 39 games for Man Utd last season. More

That resulted in a big-money move to Italian giants AC Milan, where he went on to cement his status as one of the finest players on the planet.
Gullit, who was named in Fifa’s top 125 greatest living footballers in 2004, became a household name as he captained Holland to Euro glory in 1988.
After winning the European Cup twice with Milan, Gullit then ventured to Sampdoria before becoming one of the first high-profile foreign names to head to the Premier League in 1995.
But after just one season as a player at Chelsea, he became the club’s manager and was soon making history again.

He became the first foreign manager to lift the FA Cup in 1997 and he would later manage Newcastle in the English top-flight.
Gullit has also managed Feyenoord and LA Galaxy and despite losing his iconic dreadlocks, he still remains one of the most recognisable footy icons in the world.
However, it has now emerged that the way we have all said his name – Hoo-Lit – has been completely wrong.
The revelation came thanks to a video clip shared by the “Team Gullit” social media account, the Fifa 23 world champions.

Then, as he shook his head, he said: “I don’t think so.”
However, viewers were more interested in how he pronounced his own name… and minds were blown.
“Wait,” responded one fan to the clip before adding: “His name is pronounced ‘Goo-Lit’. My whole life has been a lie…”
“This whole time we’ve all been saying his name wrong lol,” said another.
    A fellow fan wrote: “Wait… it’s pronounced Goo-lit.”
Another said that the icon had “forgot how to pronounce his name”.
